Beginner here, gonna take on a simple post & beam garden pavilion and don’t want to buy thousands in tools. Best video I found yet to cut mortise & tenon. Thank you!

Just discovered your framing videos. Thank you for such great advice for an old timer (nearly eighty) taking on my first framing project. Just wish I had started sooner. Wales UK

I added a shelf to the bottom of the top cross beam of my sawhorses.
Handier than a nearby workbench top.
Tried adding bench dog style holes, but they’re never used anymore, I use a clamp like yours.

Working on a frame now - i notice your timber slips a little on the trestles, recommend sticking a bit of cork or rubber on top the trestle, makes it easier to flip too and doesn’t marr the corners

Nice video, used alot of duggy fir in the early part of this year when restoring 95 windows at a local manor house, I see the tenon was slightly tapered, what angle do you use there?

Superb skill and efficiency. Still taking me the best part of an hour to do one, but getting quicker! Interested to know why you shave the tenon shoulders as you seemed to cut right to the line. Is the finish from the saw insufficiently flat? Thanks again for your guidance!

Essentially yes, every mm matters in a timber frame. I’d argue the tenon faces don’t need to be pared and can be sawn to finish as they’re never a bearing surface

It’s mainly to get the corner though

Can the male part of that joint ever break off and the beam comes straight down?

My OCD makes me worry about that too. I’m curious about the answer myself.

    Why not using a bandsaw?

Is there a matching video to show the process to make the matching mortise?

  • @joseortiz5965

Awesome. I just have one question , if you don't mind.
?why did you use the chisel from the sides of the tenon and not from the end of the tenon?
Or I guess , I should say , is there a reason for that? Ty

Slicing across the grain keeps the tenon cheeks square to the shoulders. Cutting with the grain could see the chisel "diving" into the tenon with any changes of grain direction.

This is for beginners, timber framing does not need to be overly complicated.

Why not do a voice over and mute the saw noise? If instruction is the goal, then demonstrate what constitutes acceptable techniques. What are some pitfalls to avoid?
State the process then perform the process. Just playing obnoxious soundtrack while operating a tool, conveys very little.
