Steve Allen did a great job on the piano.
He never ask for fame, he just wanted to write about his travels and sell a few books to pay the bills. His influence is as important as James Dean in film and Elvis Presley is in rock and roll. This young generation today don't even know who Kerouac was. Check out Mexico City Blues, the great book of poetry of the 20th century.
My friends and I, in our 20s and 30s, love Kerouac and 50s-60s jazz.

Such a great spirit. If anything, the thing people miss about Jack was the sheer joy, the spirit, which flooded the page.
He was definitely a drunken mad genius! More storyteller than poet!
Yet,his rambling poems intrigue me! You can picture him at a barstool,
with a piano accompaniment in the background,telling his poetic tales
of grandeur to anyone who will listen! Definitely a classic album worth hearing!
had read Kerouac on the road when i was 18 and then by the time i had left home at 21 i had read most of his books Dharma Bums and Desolation Angels being my favorites and it was Kerouac that spurred me on to a life of adventure going out west taking a look around hitchhiking across the usa twice and then driving many times between the east the south and the west America oh America from sea to shining sea and her mountains of majesty This mystery haunts us something about dreams
great truths that are portrayed were all well-meaning yet it can never be brought back completely whole
you catch it in glimpses we call deja vu stumbling while awake we search our memories to seize that moment once again
for they belong to us ghosts of our inspiring muse

20 years old here. time is not slowing down and soon i'll be 21 and 25 and 30 and past that i'll be nothing but a chess piece, playing the role of a pawn in someone else's game, but i'll always carry a bit of kerouac in me. a troubled soul that i hope is at rest now. and wherever he is now, i hope he knows the impact that he had in many young boys and girls just like me, throughout the years past, and the years to come.
He is 37 years old here, if this was recorded in 1959, as mentioned in the title. He was born in 1922.

Oh how dramatic I was... but true to my feelings. At the time I looked at my life, at my future and only fog could be seen. Nothing but uncertainty. Now I'm 23, and nothing has changed but my willingness to open my heart to it. The fog is still out there but in it there's always love and beauty. Let it be known to whoever reads this, that Rafael from the first comment found happiness, found sadness, found love eventually and lost it multiple times. He's suffering from one as he writes this comment, but God, how many memories he has made...
It's your game in the end, and you'll have enough time to be the pawn and the king, for all the pieces need to be moved.

Keep going, man, keep going. I'm on the cusp of turning 60, and every plan I ever had for my life has gone terribly wrong, but I'm still alive and kicking, fighting the good fight (so they say, although I'm not sure what's good about it). Yeah, when I turn 60, I'll have outlived Jack by 13 years. I guess that'll be my claim to fame. Ha! No one knows me or my poetry, and I really don't care. Cheers.

My absolute favorite author. I've read almost everything he's written. You can hear his love of bop by the inflection and rhythm of his words. He's improvising over Steve Allen improvising! If this isn't jazz then I guess I don't know jazz. Shit......do I not know jazz? Nah, I do I do......

I had this CD from the kerouac collection in the mid 90's I wore it out because i played it so much. I still love it the same, never gets old.
Why did I wait till I was 38 to discover Kerouac, Burroughs, Ginsberg... So behind the 8 ball. Well better late than never I suppose. Thanks for sharing this !

Bill, if it's any consolation, I'm 65 and "discovered" the Beats when I was 14. I'm still discovering. The journey never ends until your last breath, and after that who knows? The Beats were the inflection point in American history that challenged the establishment and the American Dream. As a kid living in NYC during the 60s, and a drummer in a rock band, I felt, first hand the energy and purpose the Beats left us hippies.
Ro Mo I'm a drummer myself. Still trying to master the Purdie Shuffle haha. I wish I grew up in NYC... I'm just a southern boy from Texas hahaha. Thanks for the reply.

First time I listened to Tom Waits I immediately recognize Kerouac in his songs, although my English is too bad.

I'm reading the book 'Song Noir' right now, about halfway through. It's about Waits but Kerouac shows up on just about every other page.

Seriously..... I just heard the record and I'm completely in love
When I was in College, my shrink, gave me a copy of " On The Road. I read it and fell in love with it. I spent one spring break, taking a trip to San Francisco. I ended up living there for 6 years, cos I wanted to see if it was as cool, as he wrote about in his writings. He wrote prose, but it's poetic...Even when he reads, you can hear the music in his words....
We need now Jack...

This was great, so much better than the appearance on the steve allen show to promote this album (steve's demeanor/piano playing was almost mocking jack, am i right?)

Old Frisco with its end of land sadness...this is describing the indescribable, a job of work that can only be executed by rare Angels, discarded and misunderstood individuals who remain with us, only for a short poignant time. While they are here we begrudgingly accord them a little fame, a little money perhaps (not very often). RUclips the vast library of today's Alexandria, taken very much for our granted attention.

it’s technically prose not poetry! basically just means it’s kind of meandering descriptive writing (almost like it’s in the middle of story and poetry)

O Yes O Yeah. And I wish Johnny Depp would record an unabridged reading of JK, any book he'd like to read recorded for c-d. Maybe piano background. Depp reads Kerouac so well on the few samples out there - - a full book reading would be the way to go.
