Hi Luke! In fact English is not the only lessons you teach people, but you give us life lessons too. Your sincerity, empathy, patience, sense of humour and sarcasm make your podsact a unic and curative place. Your remarks about accents reminded me a case from my tour guiding past. Once I was guiding a big group from UK,and their tour leader tried to make a joke on my accent, addressing to the group: " Well, miss Certain provided us with quite comprehensive and interesting information, all was perfect except her accent". Immediately an old gentlman from the group asked her for a microphone and turned to me: " Excuse me miss Certain, I was wondering how many laguages do you speak? ". I replied " 2 mother tounges and 2 foreign languages with accent". Then he asked her: " Dear Dorothy , what languages do you speak?". She answered: " As you know English is my mother tounge which is enough to feel comfortable everywhere". Then he turned to the group: " Oh,bravissimo! Ladies and gents, let' s applaud our British tour leader for speaking her mother tounge and only language with no accent!"😅

Although he has a strong Spanish accent, this does not mean he speaks English poorly. He communicates quite accurately and coherently. Furthermore, he could take an accent reduction course to improve his pronunciation.
Moreover, he possesses the skills necessary to work at such a renowned institution. In fact, his bilingualism could be an asset to the institution, as he can communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking colleagues and clients. Additionally, his diverse background and perspective may bring a unique contribution to the team and enhance the organization's inclusivity efforts.

A lot of people used to say that he was a mediocre player with very few skills and that he was so popular just because he played for Madrid. But thing was that Raúl kept scoring a great amount of goals year by year. What's more, he spent a couple of years of his career in Shalke and there he got the recognition he deserved for being an extremely commited professional and helped that club to achieve awesome results. I'm sure that was the key of his success: hard work, attitude, continuous improvement... And so must be Santi's professional achievements' secret as well.

Absolutely love this episode! I'm an English communications coach here in Taiwan and everything you've said here is what I tell my clients as well, especially those who are new. Most of them come to me after years of learning (not including the 9 years in schools) and still couldn't communicate effectively in English.
Most of the common issues are as you've mentioned e.g., they have very high scores in TOEIC (Listening & Reading) but couldn't speak and write coherently. They typically use rare or inappropriate words and confusing sentence structures. Some are too tied up with having "perfect" pronunciation or grammar that they're afraid to speak. Many also have issues understanding non-American accents; Taiwan education promotes American English as "good" English, so much so that many professionals couldn't deal with clients and partners who speak other Englishes.
Accents, overall, is the least important; Fluency & Coherency is the primary key in communications - if the content is not logically structured or the ideas aren't linked, no amount of "high level" vocabulary, "perfect" grammar, pronunciation or accent could make the communications effective. Of course, as you've said, that's not to say vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation aren't important, but they don't need to be perfect to achieve effectiveness.

It was indeed a very interesting and extremely useful episode. Thank you so much, Luke! I just want to add something about accents. I don't really think that we (learners) should worry about our accents too much. We should worry about our pronunciation instead. And these two things - accent and pronunciation are two very different things as it seems to me. You definitely must have good pronunciation in order to have a comprehensible conversation and to be understood by others. But accent for me it's more like a smell or flavor. A flavor of words. For example, if you see some beautiful flowers in the wase it doesn't really matter what the fragrance of these flowers is. The flower remains the flower. It could have a rose scent or a tulip scent. But it's still the flower, right? The same with words. English is English whether the accent it's pronounced with - Niggerian, Welsh, or zoomer. Maybe it's not that bad to have some flavor in your English.

But it's good to know that it's possible to pass a job interview with that level of English, ha-ha! Speaking of assessment criteria, they seems quite objective but general problem with language exams is that it's possible to under-perform by a grade or two if you're not comfortable with some particular topics.

I agree 100% with all that you said, Luke. Using Santiago's example was a great idea. Lots of good stuff for me to reflect on, since I'm always trying to show students (and friends as well) how accuracy is only a partial indicator of being good at English. Also, I strongly believe that good, understandable pronunciation is very different from having a foreign accent, which can be very charming. This is what I feel when I hear non-native speakers using my mother tongue. Thank you, as usual.

What is a bad accent? I think you speak good English when you can comnunicate with people of diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds even thought you do not speak with the RP accent.

Dear Luke. I am delighted to know your ideas about this podcast because being good at English is not perfection, amazing vocabulary, excellent grammar, and unsinkable speaking. Just a learner human being, like Santi. Thank you.

Hello again, as you said despite his accent of Spanish I wished to have his level of English (Santi's the Spanish)?
And a bit of advice from me (if you accept it) You should not worry about négatif comments because they have a good impact on doing a new podcast.
    because négatifs comments aren't only to disturb you but can be to want some conversation with you incorrectly;
because a learner of English appreciates some discussion with an English speaker very much, it's an honor and good luck to practice our English with you. So on all sides, it's a positive thing.
I followed this one more than 6 times I think.
I hope it's the correct way of explaining my opinion because of my bad English.
Have a nice afternoon and thanks a lot for your podcasts.

Luke, once I found your podcasts, I just stopped searching for whatsoever. I think you're born to be a teacher. My weakest place is listening. However, I've noticed that everyone is different. Fe, I can read & write, probably speak as well. Other people who have an envious understanding, thought, surprisingly can't read let alone write. But you're aware of all this.

We shouldn't focus on perfection, because no one is perfect. However we should pay attention to clearness in speech and fluency

I do not know if my comments will get noticed by you, Sir. However, here's what I would like to say, or rather write.
Sir, I love the way you talk to the camera. Till today, out of all the episodes that I have watched I have never felt that you were in your room but rather I felt as if you were right in front of me. Your voice and your style of speaking is music to ears. Thank you for impacting my life through your teaching. I'm a psychology student but now I'm drawn more towards literature.
    Luv from INDIA ❤❤❤❤

I have to say , from my country Spain , that I've never known an english speaker from UK or from the USA that don't have their english accent when they speak in Spanish . So , Santi would speak with no spanish accent , if he had born in any english speaking country . Too bad is to critizise , why don't you learn spanish or french or german ? .Everybody has that accent , when they speak another language . Thank you so much Luke , I learn from you every day , not only English language

I heard a few more stories that you analyzed in other videos and I was so interested because of the content, the way of presentation, the examples that I just kept listening and learning.
Hope to improve in conversation and writing through this way of learning

Talking about accents - I bet you wouldn't understand someone frome a Scottish countryside or, Wells. There is this show with J.Klarkson who ows a farm, and there is a guy there who builds stone fences, forgot his name. So, noone from the filming crew understands what he's saying. Neither do his neighbours. I think only his missis understands him. I agree, it is a beautiful thing that diversifys the language. And of course there are thousands of jokes about the missunderstandings that occur due to strong accents(Oi! You came he to die? - oh, not today but yesterday!).

For me, personally, there's no such things as a good accent or bad accent. Your accent is your identity. I love the modern RP accent and that's just like what genre of music you like.

I am not a big fan of test like that.
Plenty of student told me I have got this score at this english test.
I say ok but are you able to make any conversation in english, chat on any topics, are you able to talk 5 minutes or to have a long conversation of 1 hour with a local.
For me you know test is nothing, it is like when you get a contest, what the meaning of that !
Before you were bad and now because you are MOF in France for example you are good at your job.
It is a shit, the most important is to be consistent in what you do every day.
If every day you push yourself and you do the thing as if it was the first time you are progressing, you are getting the level.
All the test in school are nothing. People pay for degrees but when they are in the middle of the job they are not able.
It is not about talent it is about working and have some people on the side of you who are pushing you, who are cheering you.
The opposit of what we have in school today, everyone is learning against others and it is the same at work.
We work in the same company but not with the same goal.
The goal should be getting a company who gets success but instead of that it is getting the most wages we can for yourself.
The best example is in football, journalists put the light on one guy instead of talking about the team spirit, the group, the alchemy.
A lot need to be change in the way we study any activities.
Thanks for your videos Luke always interesting, good philosophy.
I was bad in english then I moved 3 years and a half in Uk and worked in hospitality.
I worked a lot in the job and I worked a lot during my free time with some english lessons.
You get nothing without work but to get the motivation, you must have a leader, an example beside of you to show you the right way.
It is a process, I am not where I want to be so I carry on to read, listen, sing, talk, think... in english.
