I have two of these, I love them but they can be finicky. They all will need pinch rollers, and belt choice and quality is slim. Speaking of which, if anyone knows the PRB belts for this machine... And after a year of relatively heavy use for recording, the W&F has crept back up on both machines. I am hoping the pinch rollers are not already wearing out again... What kind of W&F are you getting on that deck?
That being said, the recordings they make sound AMAZING on my Nakamichi's, like truly stunning to my ears. I wonder if it is the HXPro that does it. Playback is only average quality on the Sony's, even for tapes they recorded themselves. But I'm telling you those same recordings sound incredible played back on any of my Nak's. It's putting down a lot more than it's picking up.
Hard to recommend these 100% as I would never use it as a playback deck (although if you are less picky, I suppose it would be fine). But if you need a deck to do recordings, I highly recommend it. I bought 2 to use to manufacture recordings for my own musical projects.
I would love a video on any modifications that can improve these decks further!

I’ve had one of these since brand new, I realized early on that it needed a motor replacement about once a year when I used it heavily. Sounds decent but sadly my most unreliable Sony deck. I’m fortunate to still have my original TC138 as well as my TC177, clearly a different era.

I am curious, what symptoms made you need a new motor every year? I have 2 and I've replaced the capstan motor in one of them.

I OWN A SONY TCKB920QS .. Sounds Great but it is having a good bit of flutter.. can you please suggest any trick to reduce it!!

If you have flutter (not wow) with a DC motor the reason could be pinch rollers or a loose intercapstan belt. As during tape tension it will slip on capstans to give tape room to go. Or this may be a very bad motor and you will hear how uneven it runs, for example if one coil has poor oxidized contact on the rotor.

Perhaps that's the reason some brands like TEAC for example used a rudimentary capacitor coupling with the external case and the signal GNDs?
I am a bit confused about your scope which was regarded as the bechmark of value DSO. I've at this point got almost a couple of years ago a competing model for a little less money than yours and it's behaving much differently... I could totally do a swipe like you do and it's buttery smooth from top end to lower end, only when the time/division gets near the second it starts to slow the update rate and when you're into the second range the signal is not framed but swipes from left to right... and no sign of transients during any function, I notice you get those out of phase transients in many occasions and it seems your signal but out of phase, or not trigger locked ? I find it quite distracting... besides, I am surprised you're still using T adapters for the BNC. I've got Y shaped adapters and they're much more convenient and don't obstruct the front of the unit. And I changed a bunch of those as some had poor connctions... and they were the source of my random spikes.

@ShazeemKhan I guess the best of each decade, like 70s, 80s, 90. I love the look of 70s ones.

@@jacobcaron2280 nice. I more like the 80s aesthetics.
You can look into the Denon, Onkyo / Integra & Yamaha KX**
The older Naks seem to be reasonably priced as well. I hope I helped & GL in your search

Hey, I have a quesiton regarding this mechanism. Is it a bad mechanism, let's say if you compared it to a Pioneer CT-656 with it's ALPS mech? I heard it's quite a poor quality mech overall...

Don't mess K650 and K670/690, 650 had a plastic stands and overall was not a good single capstan cheap transport. The latter two have full metal transport with dual capstans with two separate belts to reduce w&f. It just has lower mass capstans than higher grade models.
