That's only happened to me once and it was when I ran out of cards during the moon battle. I suppose there could also be a challenge modifier that does that but idk (haven't gotten that far yet)
It is because starvation doesn't spawn during phase three and so as an alternative the moon jist gains attack. It also means it is possible to soft lock yourself after beating it if you dont have any more attacking cards
