Anyone who plans to play this game, I'd advise you to make the most out of your time with your BitBuddy as it's a one-shot deal. Death is permanent and you need to dig around in save files and registry files to start a new game again (restarting the game without doing this just takes you back to the death screen with the skeletal remains of your BitBuddy).
How deep in the save and registry files?

I like how "murdering" him on the boat is arguably the most merciful thing you can do, especially given his false hope at the end. Clearly 2022 wasn't depressing enough already.

I also love at the end when he’s recounting how much fun they had together, even though he was just worried about crashes during the food, balls wasn’t fun, and you didn’t get him to a very high level in quest. He was imagining the time they had together as fun, even though it really wasn’t because it’s the only time he had.
Theres also a 24 hour ending where he dies of old age

At least that bit is a somewhat less depressing given his perception of "fun" seems more or less normal since even for actual people "fun" is both subjective and tends be to be most comparative to their own previous experiences. There's just nothing to compare it to on his end beyond either doing nothing or awaiting being nothing for one reason or the other. "Fun" indeed.
I personally think the one where he dies of old age is merciful, yes, it’s cruel that he doesn’t get what he wanted, but because you waited literally 24 hours for him, it means something, and instead of seeing the player as some random guy he’s forced to entertain, he sees the player as a friend, and he gets to enjoy the fact that the person who he was afraid of became his friend.
Being trapped in an empty simulation sounds like hell to me.

For someone who doesn't want to die, BitBuddy sure is a nihilist about everything.
I think I understand, I'm suffering from minor depression (and Asperger's), making almost everything seem rather dull or terrible, mostly the former, so I feel cynical, pessimistic, or just whatever about a lot of things, but that doesn't mean I want to die far from it really, so he might be in a similar boat

Daniel Mullins is a good dev, but I have to admit his past few games have all felt a little constrained by his writing style. I know it's part of his whole deal, but it would be nice if we could have a change from the standard "tragedy 4th wall breaking ending" he's so fond of.

but i feel like daniel mullins is really a master of the '4th wall break' genre & the ARGs often involved. it'd be a shame not to see him do it in future.
@@bazooka544 I getcha, but at the same time I feel he does himself a disservice at this point since by now you can basically guess almost perfectly where the stuff he makes will go.
When I played Inscryption and spoiler stuff happened at the end of act 1 I actually wrote down what I guessed the ending was going to be and was disappointed to discover I was basically right.
That strikes me as a real weight around the ankles for his stories and writing. He's a master of that type of narrative, but I personally would like to play a game by him that really takes me by surprise again. A story that doesn't start with me going "I, the player, am a relevant character in this story seperate from the entity I am controlling"

His genre is already very niche though, I don't mind him doing this writing style at all since he is the one constantly pushing it forward (especially with Incryption) and the best part of his games are how the gameplay ties directly into the 4thwall breaking story.
@@graphite7898 See, I don't see it that way. I think that since his games are primarily about the narrative it weakens his works because you go into them already knowing what it is by now. The genre and narrative style he inhabits is rather wide and so it's restrictive for him to stick with one thing so much.
To put it in the language of films, he is a director who works exclusively in one genre (let's just use comedy as an example) but he sticks almost exclusively to slapstick (again, for example). This is a shame because it would be beneficial for audiences, the medium and the director for him branch out into say satire, or rom-coms.

Wow this game is like being together with someone in his last moments and you know, you wont be able to see him again, once you left. This is way more emotional than i expected.. Well done.
You just explained my feelings perfectly. recently I lost 3 very important people to me in the span of 3 months, and I didn’t get to be there in those last moments for any of them, for some reason this game made me feel comfort at the end, like I was forgiven or something.. idk
The thing is, there is no attachment sure I feel kinda bad, is not my dog whom I have memories With, is just some random not even cute, like when a Tamagashi die, I feel it, cus I had memories and stuff

I think due to the depressive episodes I've been going thru, it's made this the most upsetting video I've watched in recent memory just because I empathize so much with begging to live and be happy with the resignation of how things are going to continue to go. idk I just feel bad for the little guy and taking small joy in trivial things while being unsure if what you're doing matters.

I’m sad they didn’t let him go on the holiday one final time. I’m happy he got to experience it with a friend, though. A friend who stayed with him until the very end.

As you cradle the skeletal remains of you beloved BitBuddy, a cloaked figure emerges from the shadows. His features obscured by a dark hood, save for a smile that chills you to your very soul.
The man kneels and places a hand on your shoulder. You glance up at him, but force yourself to look away from that ghastly smile. Without a word, he reaches into the folds of his cloak and pulls out a small object. Pressing an innocuous silver square into your hand, he slowly stands and walks away.
Tears well in your eyes and quickly overflow into a torrent as you let loose a horrific wail. Pain cuts deep into your being as you stare at the skull on the ground, feeling waves of regret crashing into you like a tide.
The figure turns to you, still walking away, and quietly says, "I hope it was worth it." His lips curl once more into that accursed smiles as he walks off.
Devastated, you look once more at the skull. The sorrow and pain overwhelms you as you come to realize the horrors of what you've done. You glance at the nearly forgotten object in your hands, and recoil in disgust, throwing it away.
The Klondike bar falls to the ground with a sickening, dull, thud.

Funny how alot of big, blockbuster moments that have millions of dollars spent and months, if not years, of acting put into them and they don't get me, yet something simple like this game can.

If it make you better, you're not alone. Having a rough week rn by dealing with burnout and episodic depression at the same time, and baber just shattered the mental glass.
We only interacted with them for like ¼ min yet the bond is almost the same as at least a year, especially when they absolutely counted every second and appreciated every moment we spent even tho it's still a short list and baber couldn't get a chance to have a second holiday. When they started to speak really slow it really hurts a lot.
At least baber didn't die with fear like the first time we met them with such an anxious look and immediate warning & begging without proper introduction
You know, I think people wanna kill him because of that reused bit sound that plays in other of his games. If BitBuddy had a Boston accent, saying: "Hey missah', don' hit that quit button or I die, y'hear?" I don't think a lot of people would go against his word.

There will be someone who plays this and genuinely gets emotionally attached to this and keeps the game running for days and days just for their power to shut off briefly while they're asleep. They'll wake up and see the computer screen black. You then hear a muffled gunshot quickly followed by a heavy slam. This is going to happen. It will and it has to.
There is a game/desktop pet that works the same way.
Alienmelon's runonce.
Essentially the same concept; a little buddy on the screen who will be permanently dead if you close the program.
Difference is that they walk around the screen, have recorded voice lines, and sometimes saves a couple of pictures to the desktop.

It must feel so horrible to know that in any moment or another you will die, especially since there isn't much you can do before your "owner" quits, your worst fear, so that you do whatever you have in mind and the trial allows you.

monika in the og game she sees all black and a void, nothing else, but you can't leave because you can't warn her, which makes the game semi unquitable (word made by me) if you have mercy for monika
