- Lacey and I head up north to backpack Elk Lakes Provincial park for 3 days 2 nights. Petain Basin is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been but I have a feeling we will say that with each Canadian Rockies trip!
The basin might be named after Philippe Petain, the hero of the Battle of Verdun in WW1 but later Nazi sympathizer during WW 2 (maybe this explains his name being etched out of the trail sign). Lots of places in the Canadian Rockies are named after people or places associated with the Western Front. Canada, being a dominion of the Crown, was called up to fight for Britain in the Great War, and found its independence and national identity fighting on the Western Front.
Not only a Nazi sympathizer, he led the Vichy Regime which deported around 76,000 Jews to their deaths. Not someone worthy of naming anything after.
That and he was convicted of treason for helping exterminate 76,000 Jews. I’d prob rename my park too😮
Great video. Gorgeous area. Thanks guys! Stay safe.
Cool video. How did you guys got there? From Elkford?
That was awesome! Unreal scenery! Great breakdown of the bear encounter. Your camera had an extroinary life! Thanks for sharing! Hike on!
Awesome video Andrew!! BC looks incredible
Congrats.....you guys are the real deal. Great to have the shared passion and to get out there and enjoy it. Also, your filming and editing skills do not go unnoticed. Good job.
As for the Grizzly encounter, I am definitely in the Stan Mills camp. As Stan would say, "how would you like it if someone walked into your house while you were feeding your kids and started yelling at you?" I think, all things considered, you played that one pretty well.
Thanks for posting and I look forward to your next one.
Tom
thanks tom, hope you have a good 4th
Another fine backpacking video adventure. Nice trails and verdant forests to rocky trails no trees and alpine scrambles. And a lot of water! Rain and hail seem to be the story all over these days. The time lapse starry night videos you do are always well done! You picked another awesome vast landscape to explore. It look like you had the whole place to yourselves too! I wonder what your campsite altitude was and daytime/ nighttime temperatures were?
Happy anniversary Andrew and Lacey!
THank you! Yes we had it all to ourselves. I agree with the rain and hail, very wet year so far
Loved the break down of the bear encounter. Bonus points for the John Candy clip and the excellent stickman illustration! Thank you for posting and congratulations on your 5 year anniversary.
Thank you! and yes John Candy and Farley are my favorites
The water at 5:40 is so beautiful!
Great video. Got me examining this area for a hike at some point. You prefer the Sony Handycam vs iPhone video vs Camera?
I really love my Sony AX53 handycam to the point I got another one, the one that died during this had a very very rough life haha. The depth, zoom capabilities and stabilization / color are amazing. But for most people the IPhone should be good enough. I've always just loved filming stuff and the camcorder is better than a DSLR (which I also take) because you don't have to worry about getting dust on the image sensor.
happy anniversary!!
thank you!
