  • Here is the full build of my sub $399 gaming PC that performs very well.
    CPU: i3 10100F ($80 and outperforms the i7 7700)
    Gigabyte B460m with wifi/bluetooth ($65ish on Newegg)
GPU: GTX 1060 6GB ($150 on eBay auction... prices are falling for these)
    512GB M.2 SP SSD ($39 on Newegg)
RAM: 16GB Samsung DDR4 2666 (took it from a prebuilt that I sold for parts).
Case: Allied Stinger with RGB fans ($45 on Amazon... Don't wast money on RGB when you can find cases that give it away at no extra cost).
Power supply: 600 watt semi modular Cooler Master Silent Pro 80+ bronze (took out of a different PC).
This build was focused on price/performance, not looks (yes, with a little extra money you can make it prettier). The RGB case just happened to have the best airflow for the price range in the mATX form factor. You can find some similarly priced DIY PC cases on Newegg, but I thought this one was better. Case prices change a lot though, and they frequently go on sale.
    Games Tested (all at 1080p):
    Fallout 4, Ultra
    The Witcher 3, High
    Borderlands 3, High and Medium
    Bright Memory Infinite, High
Shadow of the Tomb Raider, High
Notes on how to get the parts for this PC:
Prices on the i3 12100F are currently dropping since filming this. So, if you can find a 12th gen motherboard for a good price then this CPU is better. At the time I ordered these parts the 12th gen was $40 more and motherboards were like $30 more. So, that put me $70 over budget for an unnoticeably slight performance gain.
Watch out for boards being sold without I/O shields. It's annoying....
The board I picked in this build isn't the best, but it was the best price for what you get.
When hunting for a GPU check local deals first. If using eBay check both auctions and buy it now frequently to find best deals. Look for best offers and make offers. Make sure the seller has good ratings and the GPU has been tested and has photos with no visible damage.
SSD prices fluctuate a lot. So, one brand is the best deal one day, but not the next. Shop around.
You can often find RAM in prebuilts or motherboards that you can resell after taking the RAM out. It's not too hard to get RAM like this at no cost. But you can also get it on eBay or Amazon for pretty cheap.
Cases: You do not need a new case. People are often throwing away good case and power supplies. Even old prebuilt cases usually work if they have enough ventilation. Air flow matters 1000x more than RGB does. Unless you are reselling the PC: people are attracted to RGB like moths to bug zappers....
Alternative new budget GPUs to consider:
    GTX 1650, RX 6500, RX 6400
    Alternative used GPUs:
    GTX 970, 980, 1650, 1070, 1080, 1660
    RX 470, 480, 570, 580, 5500, 5600
    Alternative CPUs to Consider:
    i5 9th gen, i5 10th gen, i3 12100
    Used options:
    i5 6500/7500/6600/7600, i7 6700, 7700, i3 9100
At this price point I can't really recommend any AMD CPUs right now, but I expect that will change soon.
P.S. I chose to show my face in this one because I get a lot of comments assuming I'm a teenage boy 😂
Maybe my interests shown on this channel [and my voice] fit that demographic better, but I am, in fact, a middle aged woman 😎

I totally agree. I built something similar years ago with my son as well: an i5 6600k, 256GB m.2, 1TB HDD, a 4GB GTX 960, and 16 GB of RAM. We used mainly used hardware though, and it cost a little more, but this is basically the modern equivalent of that, but better. My son still uses that system (though he's upgraded it a bit) and he's about to start his first professional programming teaching job (he's still a teen). It's amazing the difference $500 (that was the cost of his) and a bit of effort can have in a kid's life with a little direction.
My kid is actually the one who inspired me to get back into tech stuff because he wanted me to teach him what I knew and he also wished I had finished the games I started making in the '90s (which is what Sky Realm, the game I show off on this channel is) before that I had gone many years without even owning a desktop PC, after working in IT for a decade, almost going blind and feeling burnt out with technology.

The proper way to magnetize a screwdriver is to rub it across the magnet one way only. Also keep the magnet away from mechanical hard drives.

    • @IronwingTechHaven
      @IronwingTechHaven  2 года назад

I didn't use any mechanical hard drives in this build. So, that is not a concern I felt like addressing. Also, is there really a 'proper' way if just rubbing it on a magnet any which way works? Yes, I have tried several ways, and they all work. However, I would love to hear your explanation of why this is the proper way.

@@grahamgamedev perhaps it stays magnetic longer as well? I'll have to give it a try. Also, you can magnetize them with a coil and a battery too, but that's more effort, but can sometimes last quite a bit longer if done right.
I'm planning on doing many more videos in the future on low power gaming. I'll probably start by showing how to undervolt a system like this one to dramatically reduce the power consumption with very little impact on the gaming experience.

This is very similar to what I built 2 years ago. I changed my main rigs mobo cpu & ram to a gigabyte h310, 9100f & 16gb gskill 2400. ($167 iirc) I struggle in tasks that need more cores/threads so I'm thinking of building a older oem xeon rig to replace my secondary pc and selling it for more than the oem cost. Wii U & PS3 emulation I'm willing to bet do better on old xeons than these fast but low thread count i3's.

will the i5 3570 + GTX 1060 be the bottleneck?

    • @IronwingTechHaven
      @IronwingTechHaven  2 года назад +2

I think you're asking if that i5 will bottleneck the GTX 1060, and from what I can tell, in most cases the answer is no. That CPU should be fine for most games, but that's really the tricky part. It depends on whether the game is CPU intensive or GPU intensive and it also depends on if the CPU takes advantage of higher core counts than 4, not just on the hardware, but I think that i5 should be fine. Either way, it will provide a playable experience in a lot of titles, so it's not a bad paring. Just to give you an idea, with all of my games with an i3 10100f (which outperforms that i5) the CPU is only at around 40% before the GPU is makes out on 1080p high settings. So, the GTX 1060 will most likely be maxed out before that CPU hits 100%, but like I said, it depends on the game too.

@@IronwingTechHaven ok, gocha, but having more ram usually will lasting longer and save money from future upgrade. Currently I have 64gb ddr4 on my 11400f, 128gb ddr4 on 12400f and 256gb ddr4 on my 7920x. All of them will expect to be in service until 2030s. My last built was q9650 w/16gb ddr3 and e7300 w/8gb ddr2 that made in 2008 and it last me 12 years until i got my 7920x in 2020.

    • @IronwingTechHaven
      @IronwingTechHaven  2 года назад +1

@@hanrinch well, if I need more RAM the board has 4 slots. So, finding two more matching sticks in the future is pretty trivial. I have never had trouble finding matching RAM on eBay for almost nothing.
My 10 year old laptop has 32 GB of RAM, and I never use more than 8. 😂
So, I'll believe that future-proofing statement I hear from a lot of people when I actually see it.
But I wasn't building this for myself anyway. I was building it to show people how to build an inexpensive but effective gaming PC. I have since resold it, and there was no point in spending the extra money for extra RAM that no one cares about in a budget build anyway.
Also, I got the 8 GB sticks for free.
So, my goal was not to make the best PC, but to make a good PC I could easily resell to get a bit of profit.
Also, I think the money you spent on all that RAM probably would have made more sense to put into a better CPU, GPU or PSU unless you plan on using it as a server or running a load of VMs.
How much RAM you need above 8GB really has little to do with how long you expect to use your PC and more to do with what you plan on doing with it.
I mean, my main computer is my Lenovo T420 from 2011 and for what I do with it (including video editing) 8GB has always been more than enough.
So, we can't make blanket statements like "you would have been better off doing such and such instead" unless we also know the kinds of work loads the user will be working with.

@@IronwingTechHaven true, always get yourself in the balance between cost and quality/lifespan. I liked to max out because I hate to open the case again once I finish the built. Again, your comment taught me well, thank you!
The main reason why I got rip off q9650 is because the processor is aging to the fact it is no longer running newer programs that require FMA instruction and graphic card is also outdated, however the 16gb ddr3 is still going strong after 12 years of used and sold all modules together for 100 bucks. The board was giving up to goodwill and cpu/gpu gave away to the recycling.
