This is one of the best kitchen cabinet tutorials on YT. After watching probably 25 YT vids and numerous Pinterest pages, I painted out my builder Oak Colonial cabinets just over a year ago to get our house ready to sell. I particularly like your attention to detail and the fact that you are bang-on in how long it takes to do the job properly. I did mine during the winter, so I set up an area in our finished basement and used my drop sheets to cover stuff. I used Bulls Eye Primer and Benjamin Moore Advance for the top coat ( designed for cabinets, self levelling, etc). I did it in sections, and while all fronts were sitting for the final cure, I did the cabinet framing ( thank god the interiors were white and in good shape). I did white uppers and gray lowers with a new Formica countertop. I was SUPER happy with the end result. Your tip to give everything 2 weeks for a final cure is SO right. Do it once the right way, and your good to go. Your kitchen looks FAB !
Thank you for the very well thought out and articulate comments. And for the kind words. It made our day! I’m sure your cabinets look beautiful! Great tips! I would like to add a little input one that Sherwin Williams Emerald Trim paint it has a great finish and is easy to work with but ..... BEWARE of the darker colors. I painted my cabinets dark expresso brown and the paint would not dry. I did a test spot on the window trim above the sink and then on the side panel of the cabinet - both were prepped. They are both oak. The paint was still sticky two weeks later! I returned the gallon of paint and the Sherwin Williams sales rep told me that the DARK colors of the EMERALD TRIM will take longer to dry and will take up to 30 days to cure to a really hard finish.
Thanks for the heads up. I was not aware of that. Great info to share with our viewers that look through these comments. Thanks for taking the time to leave us a comment. :)
DITTO!!!! I have Peppercorn Black. The Valspar K+C paint I used was bad so I had to strip and sand the rest of the bad paint. Bought enamel and notice it is taking forever too. They refuse to tell you that fact.

Thank you for the kind words. Carefully using a 150 grit sandpaper watching so that you don’t alter the shape. If to harsh go to a finer grit sandpaper :)
@Shelley Klock I'm late to the party, so your kitchen may be done by now, but just in case - I painted out my entire kitchen just over a year ago to get our house ready to sell. We had builder grade oak cabinets, but they were solid wood, so worth painting, and they were the colonial style with the door-shaped ridge. I used a "Mouse" sander - Several companies make these, like Black and Decker. Smaller than an orbital sander, easier to control, and did all the flat surfaces, then hand sanded the ridge/panel on the front. If your panel is solid you can use the mouse for the flat front and hand sand the panel sides and groove. This tutorial is very good, although I used Benjamin Moore Advance and Bulls Eye Primer. The number one tip for a great end look - take your time and attention to detail, and 2 weeks final cure time. Good Luck.

Thank you. Yes we did consider painting it white. But decided to keep it as is because the stained brown adds a little bit of warmth to the kitchen. It also gives continuity into the dining area by having the kitchen and dining room window trims match. The thought was we can always paint it white down the road if we wanted to. Thus far we decided to keep it just stained. Thanks for watching

Thank you for watching and commenting. Later this summer we are hoping to upload a video on how well they are holding up. It will be almost 2 years after painting.them.
Thanks for the ideas. I noticed you didn’t paint the window trim and wondered why. Also if you could do a follow up on the countertop it would be great. Is it granite or quartz, did you outsource this part? Kitchen looks very nice. Good job to both of you.
Thanks 😊. We didn’t paint the window trim because we wanted some wood there to add some warmth to the kitchen plus it would then stay similar to the other wood window trims at the other end of the kitchen giving some continuity. The thought was we could always go back and paint it white if we wanted to. At this point we are liking it unpainted. We removed the old laminate countertops and we braced the cabinet bases here and there. We paid to have the granite countertops installed. We’ll put a link here to our video on the install and if you read through the countertops video comments you may glean more info if interested. ruclips.net/video/VUPy2QaKKGs/видео.html Take care 😊
Thanks again. These two videos answered many of the questions I’ve had, including what style of sink, how to Mount it the backsplash, and many more. I hope I can find a countertop installer in my area who does as good a job. Helps with my budget too.
We did but because we wanted a little bit of wood to warm up the kitchen we chose not to. We incorporated a few wooded pieces such as the fruit bowl and the cutting boards to the left of the stove and more to balance out the white. Thanks for watching.
awesome video...I found this after I painted my kitchen cabinets 3 weeks back. But glad to have my steps validated. I used the same steps, other than using the shelac primer. I used the high hide white (base) SW emerald paint. What color white paint did you use?
Thanks, you made our day. We also used the high hide white (no regrets). This January it will be 4 years with it. We still get comments from guests on how nice they look. Take care😊
@@SilverLiningDayDreams wow. Glad to know you used the same color. I thought i was the only one to go with no tint. I love how the cabinets turned out. Your kitchen looks awesome 👏. Btw in future if you just want to refresh will u add another layer of high hide white without sanding or will start from scratch like sand primer and then paint. One more question, i have couple new cabinets to paint the same white. These couple cabinets were painted swiss coffee 10 months back. Since kitchen is all high hide white, these cabinets don’t match. Should i do a primer on these before painting high hide or can i straight away apply two coats of white paint?
@@pretty95138 thanks and great questions. Having lived with these painted now 4 years we are planning on repainting them again with the High hide white (no primer) down the road when they show signs of wear rather than refacing them. I think we would very lightly sand them with a 220 or 300 grit after a good cleaning just to remove any imperfections (bumps) from when we painted them; which are few. One coat of paint “may” do it. I think we would error on the side of caution and put a coat of primer on the Swiss coffee cabinets 😊
Yes for sure. Hopefully some time later this summer we’ll do a video review, but so far they have held up beautifully! We have to finish our bathroom remodel and couple outside projects first. Be sure to subscribe and hit the notification bell so you are notified when we upload it. Thanks for watching.
Thanks. We were at first thinking of refacing our cabinets. With our cabinets we’re glad we were able to paint them to save money. Thanks for watching our videos 😊

About time. Your bid covers it all. I will be doing grain filler, Dap wood filler..sounds like it'll be good. I hope so. I bought my SW Emerald today. Excited about starting. I'm in no rush to get it done. I agree with more drying time. I don't believe the Emerald requires a sealer. If it dries hard there's no need for it. Your cabinets look beautiful. How they holding up after a year? You used water based primer. My research shows with water based primer a on dark colored cabinets will bleed thru. They say use oil based primer like Cover Stain. Do you see any bleeding?
Thanks for the nice comments. This January will be 2 years with the painted cabinets. At some point we will be doing a follow up video. So far no bleeding through. Maybe because we used two coats of primer before the two top coats with the long dry times in between. I think we will be ok without bleeding but time will tell. I would say for peace of mind go with your gut and use the oil based as you are planning to. Good luck with your cabinets and let us know how they turn out. :)
We just uploaded a 2 years later update video on our cabinets if you are interested in watching. Because you were wondering if the stain bleed through I’m posting it here 🙂... ruclips.net/video/zoPVe7uRFe0/видео.html
I keep returning to advise your video being im currently doing my cabinets. Point one; I decided to do the interiors and with them being primed it ALREADY holds a fantastic difference when I’m seeing these things get hit with daylight Point two; I’m having trouble deciding what my final paint product choice will be. You highly recommend that Sherman Williams green label you used? Has it held up since the redo ?
Thanks for the nice comments. Glad to hear you are painting the interiors (so worth it). We are one year in and no regrets. They really are holding up very well. We really do love the emerald paint we used!!!!
Silver Lining Day Dreams yes your video is very informative and without confusion on the steps you employed. You said that paint is rather expensive correct? But worth it sounds like! How many finish coats did you apply? And did you ever consider a top coat of water based polyurethane for augmented protection? 👍🏻
We applied 2 top coats of the emerald paint. We decided not to protect the paint so that we have the option to repaint the cabinet faces a few years later. You can usually get a 30 or 40 % off coupon for the paint to offset the steep price.
Silver Lining Day Dreams that’s a good idea, so you can repaint them again down the road. Okay great. Coupons help! Where can I get coupons? On their website ?
I get them occasionally emailed. I think I registered online to get on their email list. If that doesn’t work your local Sherwin Williams should know how to get them. Good Luck
Thanks. Correct, we just degreased and rinsed well so clean on the inside of the cabinets. We did not sand the inside of the cabinets. We did lightly sand the cabinet faces. This worked well for us. We would recommend caulking the inside of cabinets if needed before painting :)
Because caulking the inside of the cabinets was an afterthought we ended up caulking after painting. Some areas of the white paintable type caulk are turning a faint yellow so we definitely recommend caulking before painting. Maybe we purchased some bad caulk; not sure, but to be on the safe side caulk and then paint. They really do look great in our opinion but if you look real up close you can see some imperfections where we could have prepped better. Nothing you do will make it look like a brand new cabinet but we feel they look so great that we have no regrets doing this time consuming project. This really did increase our property value.
I am a chef and I use my kitchen more than most and my cabinets get very greasy. What are your thoughts on putting a sealer on after few coats of paint for only the ones near and above the cook top.
Thanks for the nice comments. If I were in your shoes I think I would be leaning towards sealing them in which case I would also lean towards using an oil based primer. I would do all the cabinets the same so as to not have any color variations. You got this! 😊
Great video! I used the same primer and paint:) What do you recommend if, after a few weeks, you notice there are some imperfections on the surface of the cabinet after sanding the first time. I think I could have smoothed some areas out a little more. Can I sand it out, prime and paint over again?? Thanks!!
Thanks for watching. If you mean as in after already completing the painting project and going back and “spot” touching it up by resanding and repainting here and there I think you will be able to tell; possibly making it look worse. It’s hard to know. If the imperfections are bad enough that you want to try touching it up try first at an area much less visible like the inside of a less used cabinet door. My gut says probably won’t look good after “Spot” redoing. We have some imperfections on ours as well and are just living with them. Overall it’s still a big improvement. Let us know how it turns out if you try redoing an area? :)
Did you fill in the grain? You can't tell, but you didn't mention anything about that. I keep coming back to your video. I still really want to paint my kitchen cabinets. I haven't yet.
We chose not to. Depending on lighting you can sometimes see some graining. We don’t mind it; in fact, kind of like it. Others don’t like it but it’s about what you or I would want (not someone else). That’s what’s nice about these diy’s; you can be as detailed as you choose to. We say… Go for it! Thanks for watching and for taking the time out of your day to post a comment 😊
@@SilverLiningDayDreams Thanks for responding! I just joined a pro kitchen cabinet painting Facebook group. They HATE the SW emerald paint. How's it holding up?
@@SX-sv6vo Awesome. We have a bias towards a lighter sage. It’s holding up well so far. Here’s a link to our follow up video… ruclips.net/video/zoPVe7uRFe0/видео.html
They are holding up very well. No regrets. People coming into our home comment on how great they look. If we had to do it all over again we would’ve caulked before painting. Some of the caulk in the cabinets is turning just a very slight yellow. Not sure if we got some bad caulk or if it’s because we caulked such big gaps. We will definitely be doing a video on how well they are holding up at some point when we have more time; Hopefully in a month or two. We did not. We spot checked them as we painted and a few times we used our finger nail or a small spatula to remove any dried debris we found. Thanks for watching 😊
Great question. Primer is critical! The prep work and the primer are the foundation for your top coat to adhere to. We are a year in and our cabinets look like we painted them yesterday!
It is taking me 3 to 4 weeks to do my small kitchen cabinets with my 15 yr old son who I have to push to work, Lol....He wants to play but he needs to work as well.
Very well. No regrets. People coming into our home comment on how great they look. If we had to do it all over again we would’ve caulked before painting. Some of the caulk in the cabinets is turning just a very slight yellow. Not sure if we got some bad caulk or if it’s because we caulked such big gaps. Make sure it’s a paintable caulk if you do caulk. Thanks for watching. We recently painted our bathroom cabinet. See below...
Awesome 👏. We don’t clean them daily. Ends up more like monthly or before we rent our home on Airbnb that we clean them. We just use a clean soft wet white towel or even sometimes a clean damp white paper towel and gently wipe it off each time wiping using a clean area of the cloth and then we a use dry part of the cloth. We haven’t found the need to use a detergent so far. For the most part we spot clean them as we spill as this I think is the best defense. Remember it takes a good month for the paint to cure. Hope this makes sense.
I’m sorry to hear that. I called my local Sherman Williams store here in WI and they told me it’s still available and they have it. I wonder if your local store can special order it. We love the paint and will be doing a video soon on how well it’s holding up. We are still very pleased with the paint and glad we purchased it.
As many have said your video has very useful information. I wish I had come across it before I started my kitchen cabinets. I visited our local big box hardware store and they recommended that we NOT use TSP, use a latex paint, only one coat of primer, 2 coats of paint and no sealer. And they also recommended that we use the liquid sandpaper. Only by accident did I paint some of this doors twice with primer. Those are the ones that are not having any issues. The other ones have a yellow bleed through which I guess is grease that I didn't totally remove. As you mentioned, white the shows every imperfection. Next time we go with the more expensive enamel that you and others on RUclips have recommended Happily enough, through trial and error, we are doing many of the suggestions in your video. Thanks again for this wonderful tutorial! :)
Dude… I bought that GARBAGE black Valspa Kitchen and Cabinet and s..t WOULD NOT dry!!! Paint was bad. Had to strip EVERY fn door which has a lot of detail. Any remaining I had to sand off. Finally got SW Enamel, but they’ve been out and sub’d the pro version same price. There’s no difference outside of label.

My kitchen has cabinets with raised panels. What do you recommend for sanding in the grooves? I love your videos! Very relevant and informative!
Good Luck.

Great video. Before and after pics are awesome. Did you consider painting the trim and the window above the sink white?

"Keep your marriage intact." LOL 😆 So helpful, seriously. Thank you!
Hahaha! Always! 😂

Take care 😊
Thanks again. These two videos answered many of the questions I’ve had, including what style of sink, how to Mount it the backsplash, and many more. I hope I can find a countertop installer in my area who does as good a job. Helps with my budget too.
Did you think about painting the faceside of your pullout cutting board white?
We did but because we wanted a little bit of wood to warm up the kitchen we chose not to. We incorporated a few wooded pieces such as the fruit bowl and the cutting boards to the left of the stove and more to balance out the white. Thanks for watching.
Well done!
Thanks so much!!
awesome video...I found this after I painted my kitchen cabinets 3 weeks back.
Having lived with these painted now 4 years we are planning on repainting them again with the
High hide white (no primer) down the road when they show signs of wear rather than refacing them.
@@SilverLiningDayDreams thank you :)
Would really like an update on how these are holding up!

Great video. Mine are so.ild they should be replaced. They aren't even plywood, some sort of pressed board looking stuff.
Thanks. We were at first thinking of refacing our cabinets. With our cabinets we’re glad we were able to paint them to save money.

@@SilverLiningDayDreams you’re a gentleman! Thank you so much, this is incredibly helpful!

I keep returning to advise your video being im currently doing my cabinets. Point one; I decided to do the interiors and with them being primed it ALREADY holds a fantastic difference when I’m seeing these things get hit with daylight
Point two; I’m having trouble deciding what my final paint product choice will be.
Good Luck
Great video!
What steps did you take to do the insides? Just degreasing and no sanding correct? Straight to prime then paint
Thanks. Correct, we just degreased and rinsed well so clean on the inside of the cabinets. We did not sand the inside of the cabinets. We did lightly sand the cabinet faces. This worked well for us. We would recommend caulking the inside of cabinets if needed before painting :)
Silver Lining Day Dreams awesome. You recommend caulking all the inside 90 degree angles?
Aesthetically purposed, so it looks solid with no breaks ?
Because caulking the inside of the cabinets was an afterthought we ended up caulking after painting. Some areas of the white paintable type caulk are turning a faint yellow so we definitely recommend caulking before painting. Maybe we purchased some bad caulk; not sure, but to be on the safe side caulk and then paint. They really do look great in our opinion but if you look real up close you can see some imperfections where we could have prepped better. Nothing you do will make it look like a brand new cabinet but we feel they look so great that we have no regrets doing this time consuming project. This really did increase our property value.
Silver Lining Day Dreams yellowing is prob the caulking drying without paint to jacket it yes. But what areas are you caulking inside the cabinets?
Silver Lining Day Dreams excellent. Thanks! And what type primer did you use on the cabinet boxes and exterior sides ?
I am a chef and I use my kitchen more than most and my cabinets get very greasy. What are your thoughts on putting a sealer on after few coats of paint for only the ones near and above the cook top.
Thanks for the nice comments. If I were in your shoes I think I would be leaning towards sealing them in which case I would also lean towards using an oil based primer. I would do all the cabinets the same so as to not have any color variations. You got this! 😊
Can I use a sprayer with the paint you suggested?
More than likely but check with your manufacturers instructions 😊
I would think you would have to do the entire door over which is an option! Another video does just that.
TFS! Fantastic job! 👍👍👍👍👍👍✌️❤️🇺🇸
Thanks Sue. You made our day!

Hello, how are the cabinets holding up. Please do an update :)
Has it yellowed any? Getting ready to do this and trying to decide on paint.
It’s been almost 3 years and hasn’t yet but in another 3 or 4 years we plan on repainting with one coat just like the walls in our kitchen so all looks new again. If worried just use an oil base primer for peace of mind. Thanks for watching 😊.

Did you sand between coats of primer and paint?
We did not. We spot checked them as we painted and a few times we used our finger nail or a small spatula to remove any dried debris we found. Thanks for watching 😊
Can you please tell me your kitchen faucet model number it looks beautiful thank you
I think it’s Delta model 19935-DST. It’s hard to tell from the paperwork that we have on it. Hope this helps. :)
Thank you very much, I appreciate it
You’re welcome!
How important is the primer?
Great question. Primer is critical! The prep work and the primer are the foundation for your top coat to adhere to. We are a year in and our cabinets look like we painted them yesterday!
Nice looking paint but what about soft closed doors? The Hinges are not that expensive.
Good idea. Maybe this winter. Thanks for watching.
Lions? Really? Glutton for punishment.
It is taking me 3 to 4 weeks to do my small kitchen cabinets with my 15 yr old son who I have to push to work, Lol....He wants to play but he needs to work as well.
We feel your pain 😂
Those teenagers grow into wonderful adults. Sounds like you’re doing a great job in your kitchen and with your son.
How are you cabinets holding up? Now
Very well.
Silver Lining Day Dreams thanks for the tip.. I am planning on starting this Friday to prep the cabinets.. super excited. Thanks for the second video
My project is complete. I am so happy.. question what do you use to clean them on a daily basis?
👍🏼. How did everything turn out?
👍🇺🇸👍
Thanks for the thumbs up 😊
Did you only use one coat of paint ???
We used 2 coats of zinsser bulls eye 123 primer and then 2 coats of emerald urethane trim enamel.
Sherman Williams?....I've been looking...can't find it.
I’m sorry to hear that. I called my local Sherman Williams store here in WI and they told me it’s still available and they have it. I wonder if your local store can special order it. We love the paint and will be doing a video soon on how well it’s holding up. We are still very pleased with the paint and glad we purchased it.
@@SilverLiningDayDreams I'm sorry...this went over your head. The paint is called Sherwin Williams, not Sherman Williams.
Oops I have an uncle named Sherman. Just a slip. 😂 Sorry sherwin Williams.
😂😂😂
My wife and I are still laughing that I said “Sherman” Williams and you noticed. And it then went right over our heads after you made us aware. 😂😂
He says foam rollers, I say NEVER use foam rollers. Use top quality multi fibre rollers. Foam absorbs air and leaves bubbles in your paint surface.
Thanks for sharing with us your thoughts.
Bulls eye is garbage I’ve used it the only way to go is Shellac base primer
Thanks for sharing with our viewers what’s worked well for you. Take care
Another "Sherman" Williams guy. 😂
😂 I know😂😂
Doesn’t help that we actually have an uncle Sherman to keep us programmed to say “Sherman”. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for more 😊
Eat out for the next month.
