Why do many dislike it? They labelled it as sponsored. Do you think they give you this content for free? They need to make money, so they can keep giving you high-quality content.
It's a GOOD THING that DF is covering gaming laptops, otherwise the ignorant fanbase will continue to stick their head in the sand regarding RYX GPUs at low power and vastly overrate the AMD handhelds (SteamDeck et al). I wish it didn't take sponsorship money for it to happen, but if that's the case then so be it. Better a sponsored video than no coverage at all while Alex dismisses laptops and everybody sucks Valve off over the Deck...
Don't know why people are complaining it's sponsored. We got a very interesting analysis of what this kind of devices can do, I'm very grateful for it.
I don’t mind DF doing these as long as the title states it’s sponsored. I find that they always add good info and analysis even if it is a sponsored video about a product. Plus why shouldn’t they “ pay the bills”. These videos are not ideal, but I still find them entertaining.
Despite being sponsored, they're showing how a laptop should be used on battery power and not enough reviewers do that. Going maximum performance hurts battery life far too much with far too much power draw. I always make sure my gaming laptops use as little power as possible, whilst looking good. Even if that means it looks console grade.
I love you guys and want to see you make more money and expand but doing sponsored reviews that feel so much different from your regular content is not the way, I feel
My wish would be that manufacturers continue to "miniaturize" these gaming-capable with discrete graphics devices even more. We now have the ROG Flow Z13 (13.4" display) with an RTX 4050 and now a 14" laptop with upto 4070.
I imagine that is out of reach for a thin and light. This isn't the format for pure gaming performance, this is for people who prioritize portability, and see raw performance as a good bonus
Sponsored in this case means "we can't afford to cover this normally", I don't think thers anything biased or dishonest in this video. Blame youtube's greed, not DF. In an ideal world hundreds of thousands of view would be enough to pay for content (it was back in the days of TV amd Neilson ratings!), but Google is greedy.
I have the Acer Nitro 16 with a 4070 at 115w and I can tell you performance is better, but not as good as 40 watts would make you think. Past 100w there are very few fps to gain...you will get more heat though. Still an amazing experience if you are into visual fidelity.
I'd drop the memory to 16gb, switch from i9 to i7 (very little performance difference due to thermals and throttling) and swap for a 4070Ti or 4070 Super and save 10-15%
Sponsored = otherwise wouldn't have had time to cover it at all. There's nothing in this video that isn't true, I WISH DF would take RTX gaming laptops more seriously, it would have tempered their bias towards the SteamDeck and handhelds in general.
I personally prefer e-gpu setups. Portability has compromise, bolt on powerful gpu allows for a great experience at home, work, or wherever you prefer to station the e-gpu.
You can find a used laptop with similar performance (and upgradable/repairable) by half the price Plus this manufacturer is known by having the bios corrupt by no reason
I don't trust frame-time with DLSS 3. I know for a fact that when playing I feel the input latency to be much higher compare to what tools show. DF can you incorporate GPU/CPU busy in your charts like GN. It's gives more clarity in my opinion.
I picked up a Lenovo Legion 5 slim 14 last year and have been quite happy with it. I dont see this, at this price point, very interesting tbh. Especially at the powered down 4070...
So a 'Gaming Device' Overpriced AF without ever mentioning the price. Fail. 2k+ EUR and not ever mentioning Battery Live. Also Fail. Inferior to the steam deck. Period.
OLED are something else but yeah a 1080p would have saved power. A 1440p would have been ideal to strike a high DPI and conserve power but you also get higher brightness with more pixels. My 15 inch 4k OLED puts to shame the iPad which hits 500 nits full window and is crazy bright for a $300 device. The OLED is probably twice as bright and that puts it up there with the $30,000 Sony Reference monitor in terms of full window APL.
Did you watch the video!? You realize most games are not as demanding as the ones DF chose to focus on, right!? Besides, you can always plug a laptop into whatever TV or monitor you want!
what why? 16:9 for such a small laptop is not good, it will feel a bit claustrophobic. 16:10 or simiar is better as it offer more vertical space so to speak.
I'd rather have the higher resolution screen. 1080p is cramped for normal stuff on a laptop. Besides you can always turn down the resolution of the screen or use upscaling via DLSS
Im glad I went for the 2024 G14 over this, the 780m igpu is great for gamng with super low power consumption on the go and I still get the 90w 4060 when im plugged in
If it weren't for the look of the keyboard I'd have been tempted by this, I think I'll be going for a G14 4070 in the next week or so. I think it has a bit more wattage for the GPU without the need for dynamic boost but need to look into that some more.
I truly don't understand the issue with using frame generation at 60fps. If my options are 30fps with equivalent latency or to look like 60fps with 30fps latency, why wouldn't I want it to look better?
Frame generation introduces additional latency since it has to queue an additional frame for interpolation. You should already be playing at 30 fps with reflex enabled.
The latency is pretty terrible at 30 fps, even with a controller, which is also why frame gen is pretty useless on 60 hz displays. You’d want at least upper 40s and higher to make reasonable use of frame gen.
@PeterSamuel-mi6hche did discuss thermals and noise, that's the whole point! This laptop is a special thin form factor that doesn't need active cooling.
Some people will never be happy. They could upload just one ad per year of uploads and some people would still be moaning that they're being greedy to the poor viewers who watch for free.
A rtx 4070 being 8 GB VRAM in a laptop is a huge "no", i almost bought a lenovo legion pro laptop because it has a great discount and specs, but that goddam RTX 4070 with 8 GB VRAM canceled the deal
I'd recommend a gaming laptop with a higher tdp amd better cooling. You'll get more performance for cheaper, but you'll have to plug it in to really get good use out of it.
The GPU supports gsync, you can plug the laptop into any TV or external monitor with gync and the 4070 will support it. No gsync only applies to the laptop display itself.
Would love to know if the paycheck they got from this actually translated to some people watching this and buying it right after. The numbers on it are so intriguing to me because i see no value in buying this whatsoever and i wonder if that money on the ad was wasted by the company
I enjoyed this video thanks. Nice to see the comparison using these lower wattage gaming laptops. I know it was mostly for comparison's sake but the idea of running anything at 30 FPS makes me dizzy. Even on the Steam Deck I'll sacrifice everything to get a game over 45 FPS or otherwise refund it.
To be very honest... 1 hour battery life is a bit rediculous.. i know its for gaming and all.. but especially in these days where games get longer and longer.. I dont game on the go so i dont have that problem. I use my MBair M2 for anything really except gaming and its gold. Battery dont last for ever thats a given, but they last a couple of hours even when using After Affects or tons of applications at once and so on.
@@Wobbothe3rd I mean yeah.. of course... but i just love the fact that i can take my MBAir into any kind of cafe and do what ever i would like to do for a few hours without thinking about it. I get what you are saying though.
Gaming on battery and getting 1 hour isn't all that surprising. You get higher power draw when gaming. Under normal loads it'll last much longer. Plus you can always limit performance to make it last longer like using the iGPU instead of the dGPU on battery
@@sehrscheeyou can't really game on MBair though right? At least not unplugged, to the extent you can at all. Also, not all PC Games are as demanding as the ones shown in this video.
On my Legion Slim, I can squeeze 3-4 hours with lighter games (such as L4D2 and Slime Rancher) with reduced settings, using the Radeon 760M iGPU, and capping the frame rate to 30 fps. There aren’t a lot of opportunities to break out the dGPU on battery for gaming, though I have shared some Stray gameplay with someone who was astonished games like that exist. For productivity though, my dGPU still puts in work on battery. In bursty loads, such as Blender, I still get very quick Cycles performance on battery, and to preview shader changes, generally only takes a few seconds to hit my sample cap, so the battery drains pretty slowly. I wouldn’t do a final render on battery, but for actually working on projects, it’s pretty awesome.
You can see it is sponsored from how much he avoids talking about noise. There is no way a laptop of that size with that kind of wattage is not going to be a very noisy thing when playing games.
Oh my God. DID you watch the video!? This is a light form factor with less cooling. There isn't as much noise as your usual gaming laptopbbecause of the lower tdp. THAT WAS THE WHOLE POINT!!!
@@Wobbothe3rd And you dont seem to understand that 65W is a huge amount of heat to dissipate for laptop of that size. Even 40W is. Your thinking of what is low tdp is very wrong. For a laptop of that size normal power they use is somewhere between 15W and 25W
@@Baoranyou dont seem to understand that most laptops that you are talking about arent meant for performant computing and has super cheap cooling compared to this one. There are 14 inch laptops with +120 watts of total gpu power.

DF selling out again
What's the problem with an occasional ad. It's a business. I don't currently see it affecting the rest of their content in the slightest.
I thought this is was a great video, good work.
that screen looks great.
Hmm wish the RTX 4070 TGP went up to 100W as that is where the performance/W plateau’s with the 4050/4060/4070.
get the xmg they go up to 140 watts
I imagine that is out of reach for a thin and light. This isn't the format for pure gaming performance, this is for people who prioritize portability, and see raw performance as a good bonus
There are, it does. Many rtx 4070 laptops do in fact have TDPs over 100w
@@TheBlackbirdii XMG doesn't have a 14-inch model. MSI Stealth 14 goes up to 90W with their model so it can be done.

That weight is very impressive.

I have the Acer Nitro 16 with a 4070 at 115w and I can tell you performance is better, but not as good as 40 watts would make you think.
Past 100w there are very few fps to gain...you will get more heat though.
Still an amazing experience if you are into visual fidelity.
they should advertise this as creator / ai laptop not gaming (ofc it can handles gaming too)
this is literally my work computer. I do 3D metrology. I told my boss it was overkill. I love him tho
I'd drop the memory to 16gb, switch from i9 to i7 (very little performance difference due to thermals and throttling) and swap for a 4070Ti or 4070 Super and save 10-15%
Sponsored = Paid to only say nice things about it.
Really? Thanks. I had no idea. Can you tell me what a notebook is next?
Sponsored = otherwise wouldn't have had time to cover it at all. There's nothing in this video that isn't true, I WISH DF would take RTX gaming laptops more seriously, it would have tempered their bias towards the SteamDeck and handhelds in general.
@@XhoowieX Sure!
Mr. Rich, you could also test with integrated scaling with this screen.
With such a high resolution and a small screen, 900p it could look quite good.
I personally prefer e-gpu setups. Portability has compromise, bolt on powerful gpu allows for a great experience at home, work, or wherever you prefer to station the e-gpu.
Ffs people not getting that this isn't a product review channel, rather a game + tech focused channel.
You can find a used laptop with similar performance (and upgradable/repairable) by half the price
Plus this manufacturer is known by having the bios corrupt by no reason
A thin 14" gaming laptop from HP is asking for overheating, that if the hinges don't break first.
The low TDP means that's much less likely than your standard gaming laptop. This laptop doesn't need the same kind of cooling as most.
At present this laptop is on sale in my country
4070 version with 32gb of ram and 2tb ssd 2290 euro
love the 13.3 (MB Air) or 14 inch form factor.. love it..
I remember back when Digital Foundry was cool.
Like circa-2016
Is this satire?
So a 'Gaming Device' Overpriced AF without ever mentioning the price. Fail. 2k+ EUR and not ever mentioning Battery Live. Also Fail.
Inferior to the steam deck. Period.
This is a fine little product, but 8GB of Vram is just a bad futureproofing strategy.
I'd go with at least 12GB.
A 1080p screen would've made more sense for this device
+1
Besides you can always turn down the resolution of the screen or use upscaling via DLSS
so this, on a 4k monitor that upscales 1440p... will be GOLDEN
Ive got an ingenious new python based healing oil and rich is very interested. Look for the performance review soon
It's such an impressive laptop that all the images on their marketing page had to be AI-generated
It's not jsut latency. It's artifacting. Not enough information at 30. Loons terrible.
The latency is pretty terrible at 30 fps, even with a controller, which is also why frame gen is pretty useless on 60 hz displays. You’d want at least upper 40s and higher to make reasonable use of frame gen.
Hey Rich, are we gonna see this brilliant device propped up next to your triple PS5's on the next podcast!?
check out LTT review of this, price isn't justifiable
Why does [Sponsored] getting thumbs down so much?
@PeterSamuel-mi6hche did discuss thermals and noise, that's the whole point! This laptop is a special thin form factor that doesn't need active cooling.
@PeterSamuel-mi6hc Ah thanks for a good detailed explaining.

No VRR on the integrated screen is a deal breaker. Otherwise, a nice performance review considering the sponsored nature of the video.
A rtx 4070 being 8 GB VRAM in a laptop is a huge "no", i almost bought a lenovo legion pro laptop because it has a great discount and specs, but that goddam RTX 4070 with 8 GB VRAM canceled the deal
8gb of vram is perfectly find for 1800p. Unless you're plugging it in to a 4K display vram isn't an issue.

I’m currently looking for just that kind of laptop! Let’s see how this one does.
Not impressed :(
I'd recommend a gaming laptop with a higher tdp amd better cooling. You'll get more performance for cheaper, but you'll have to plug it in to really get good use out of it.
@@Wobbothe3rd issue is those are usually heavier :/ this one’s 1.7kg and that’s about the limit I was looking for
Heck yeah DF get that bag
dont have gsync?i stoped right there
It does not have either freesync or adaptive sync
The GPU supports gsync, you can plug the laptop into any TV or external monitor with gync and the 4070 will support it. No gsync only applies to the laptop display itself.
@@Wobbothe3rdSo?
The comment is correct, this laptop doesn't support gsync. Because the display is part of the laptop.
I notice its always rich doing the ads. I hope the other guys are getting a fair and even cut of the ad revenue.
I have the 15 with a 4060 and love it to death, especially for the 700 I payed for it.
Plug the laptop in wherever you're sitting. Problem solved.
@@niebuhr6197 It is about physics and size of the device. You need bigger heatsink, more heatpipes, bigger fan to make effective cooling without increasing noise and you cant put those into a small device so more effective cooling usually ends up being still a small fan but with high rpm and making lots of noise with small devices. All I was hoping was that he would have talked more about the noise levels in this review.
Eh I'm more suprised about the battery life. Oh, I realised that it is onpy decent when you run it at handheld pc setting, if you don't and let it run all way it will use 120 watts.
aghhh why does digital foundry have to pull a snazzylabs every once in a while? I.E. mostly amazing journalism and then an obscenely over the top sponsor like this
