- This is a fireplace that was removed from a home and I replaced it with a high efficient air tight wood burning stove. This is the kind of work I do every day. I'm a licensed contractor in the state of Utah. When I was 15 years old my I started to work with my father in his fireplace shop. I learned how to make chimney caps with sheet metal, and install Fireplaces, Wood Burning Stoves, Stove Inserts, and Chimney Sweeping. I have over 20 years in the Fireplace business doing sales, service, and installation of Gas Fireplaces, Wood burning Stoves, Stove inserts, and Chimney Service.
Great video. Covers all the basics. ⭐️
Thanks for watching
I am from India it's really informative ❤ about traditional fireplace
Awesome! Thank you!
This helped alot! I did not know what that lever on the side was for.
I have this exact insert in my home in Indianapolis. I talked to a fireplaces store about replacing it with an electric fireplace insert. I thought they would need to remove this unit to install the new electric fireplace and they said no they don’t need to remove it. He told me they would need to remove the brick surrounding this unit to remove it???
I’ve got one of these old inserts in my house. Hasn’t been used in a long time. What’s the best option for a replacement, would a regular wood stove be better?
Hello I have a concern about insulation behind the insert unit or in the chimney framing . The outside wall for chimney is plywood and plywood panels, the inside wall will be sheet rock. Of course none goes close by the fireplace but up inside the 15ft framing leading to roof is open air which will come through the internal walls
Good video. I work on gas fireplaces for a living in Canada.
nice! Thanks for your comment.

hey thanks now i know what the little push lever on the side of the fire place is
james deroc ditto
I've been researching that darn lever for awhile and this help me alot.. Last question though. which way is open or closed? from the video it seems when the lever is down it is closed. can someone confirm this?
I have also been trying to figure out the side lever. Thanks!!!
How do I take the bottom out to replace blowers.. seems like it's cemented or something.
This the same kind I have.
I’ve got a unit like this with a ton of dust in the top vents. I can’t figure out how to get the front facade off to clean dust off the firebox in the blower. Any tips?
Look very closely along the horizontal grid lines, there should be tiny screws - one on the left and one on the right painted the exact color as the grate so they might be easy to miss. Just found mine this morning though my Model is slightly different but mostly the same. Shine a light to see them.
How do you remove this type of fireplace and ducting?
I have one in my manufacture home I want to remove it and put in an insert is that safe?
I know this is an old video but I have this in my home and I need to remove it from the wall. How on earth did you remove this thing in its entirety or does anyone else have an idea in here? I'm going to replace it with an electric fireplace insert
Had one of those Under if I can install a insert chimney inside?
If it will fit. It is not rated for it so a better option is a hearth heater.
I hope you can help me. I live in northern California. I bought a newly-built house in 1991. The house has a TEMCO TFC36-3 prefabricated (double-walled sheet metal firebox an double-walled metal chimney (8” pipe within 12” pipe). I want to change to a direct-vent gas fireplace insert. Do have to remove vented facing and the interior sheet metal firebox to be level with the hearth. The TEMCO fireplace can be (needs to be?) modified this way, right?
Any help/advice you can offer is appreciated.
OK question. My fireplace is exactly like this one In the video. It's in a mobile home double wide. It's in the wall between the living room and my tub room in the middle of the house. So my question is where is the outside air kit ventilation located? Is it going threw the floor to under the house, if so how is it getting air threw the plastic that's covering to underbelly. Or is it going threw the roof, if so where is the external vent for it because there is nothing on my roof that looks like an intake vent only the exhaust chimney part. Please help me cause I'm having major issues with my fireplace and with the manufacturer of my home. Thanks.
In a manufactured home the combustion air should come from under the floor. If your Fireplace is on an outside wall it could be on the wall... If you want to crawl under the home and look for a vent under the fireplace. This is a requirement for a Fireplace in a Factory built home to have combustion air. Good luck!
@@mrEnergy511 thank you so much. It's in the middle of my home that's why I'm so curious cause there is no vent hole in the flooring where the fire place is at. I knew something was wrong with it. That is unless it's under all of the insulation but I don't see how it could get any air that way.
mine comes out underneath, i would assume your is the same if it has it installed.
Do you burn wood in yours? I have one and I want to burn wood in it
My fire place looks similar to that but has a gas line, is it possible to burn wood in a gas fireplace? Someone in our neighborhood app once commented the gas line was a log starter. Thoughts?
Absolutely do not burn wood in a gas fireplace. That being said it is definitely possible that the gas line is a log starter. Is it an open fireplace like the one in the photo. A gas fireplace would be airtight and have a sealed glass front (not a folding glass door). Decorative glass doors can be added to a wood fireplace but they can be opened. The best way to know is to look inside the fireplace and see if there is a damper that you can open and close. The 3rd possibility is that you have a vent free fireplace. If that it the case there would be no venting in the top and you absolutely should burn wood. I don't recommend using a vent free fireplace at all. See this link for an article about the hazard of vent free fireplaces. www.maplemtnfireplace.com/vent-free
@mrEnergy511 my fire place is open no glass door, it does have a damper to open and close at the top.
@@sergiorodriguez1107 if that is true you can pipe gas into the fireplace for a log lighter or just install a gas log set and not have the hassle of dealing with wood and ash. My preferred method is to have a real wood fire 🔥
The right air vent lever-for the vent to be closed (i.e. during hot Summer), what position should the lever be in (up or down?)
I’m also searching for more info on the open and close positions
Down close
Up open
my wood burner has a vent knob on the bottom. does it need pulled out or pushed in for ventilation when it’s burning ?
If you lived closer, I would be buying some of the used stuff from you. Your video, BTW, has good sound. Thanks for sharing. If you have time, can you tell us if we need to install a double-wall in an existing FP, assuming we put in a pellet type insert? Can we get away with just a single pipe up the whole way? Thanks.
Great to find out what lever was but can’t find any info which position is open closed ?
Would you have trim laying around for a old superior fireplace. Looking for grill covers and trim flashing.
Hey Matt, If I have a complete metal box fireplace installed in my home already, and I want to install a wood burning insert, do I need to worry about any major changes? Would one just reline the existing flume with a stainless steel insert and connect it to the wood burning insert and be good?
I have this exact same question. My prefab has what looks like a sheet metal surround behind the refractory panels but this is part of the assembly that includes the fan, so i know my entire prefab firebox needs to come out. I've been told some wood burning inserts burn too hot to put inside of a prefab chimney but i can not find the make, model etc on the chimney itself - and this is always the first question a professional will ask, unless they can see it in person before commenting..
Y'all figure it out?
I was curious if I took this exact same pre-fab zero clearance firebox that you are showing. Could I install that outside and just built a fireplace around it with two by fours and then just finish it with rock or tile?
I have a ZC fireplace was told it was from a mobile home I want to use it but can't find the pipe I need. The vent hole is 8inches I thought it may be direct vent. I know it was air cooled pipe. Anyway I looking to find a 8 inch to 6 inch air cooled adapter so I can use 6 inch direct vent chimeny I have i know it will draft ok because my chimeny will be straight up 10 feet on a cabin that is only 8 ft tall any suggestions?
I have a very similiar if not exact ZC fireplace. My husband polled it out but he diesn't want to change the chimney (same specs as what you mention jn the video). Can we reuse it with a new ZC EPA fireplace?
Outside air intakes are a negative on fireplaces. Draft is push not draw, and the fireplace will not draw air from a 4" hole when it is being fed air from over a 6 sq ft opening. On a fireplace they are actually considered a possible fire hazard by nature. If you think they are so great, How come they made them Ilegal in some countries?
The draft is for use with the glass doors closed. It works well in those situations. If the doors are open or off, yes then the draft has no effect.
Hello, I have A prefabricated chimney I'm in California of course. I bought this house I don't have a clue how to use the chimney. After using it for a while I've noticed the handle on the right side of the chimney. ( the one that u said is for the air from outside) the handle in my unit is parallel to the right wall and it has to positions inside or I have to pull it outside. anyway, I don't know if it is open or close. how should I know? I called the sweeper and he charged me 95 $ just to tell me that cleaning the chimney is gonna cost me 900! $ ..So I am not calling any other sweeper. LA is a rip-off. Can you tell me where I could know how to use this chimney? how I will know if the air is open or closed? Thanks.
I have a superior wood burning fireplace about 28 years old, works great. It looks very similar to the one in this video . The issue is the damper stays in the open position, it won't stay closed. I can't see any adjustment that I can get to. Any advice? I really don't want to replace it.
Do you think they're safe to burn wood in? I'm speaking of a occasional fire.
Did you install a wood stove? What are the clearance on installing a new wood insert?
Hey did you happen to know the dimensions of that fireplace I want to install a fireplace door idk if I need to get a small medium or large
What position should the outside air lever be in to have it open? We haven’t noticed a difference and also turning on true blower, it comes on but we don’t feel any warm out coming from the top
Up is open and down is closed. Be sure its closed in the summer so you dont lose cold air to the outside.
@@lukem23 I’ve been searching everywhere for this small important piece of info, thanks so much. Maybe do a video just about this lever alone and the correct position it should be in
What makes this zero clearance? Can a woodburning fireplace be zero clearance at the same time? :)
I have one. It has a metal plate on the left side covering a what looks like a silver flat button, could be a sensor. What is it and how does it work? There is a metal box outside behind the fireplace what is that?
Can you install one of these fireplaces on a concrete outdoor patio. The roof is metal.
Allene Campbell For Sure! This type of Fireplace is not very efficient however for an outdoor Fireplace they will give you some good ambiance. You will need to look for a Stainless Steel Fireplace so it will not rust.
I just got the same one installed without the fan smoke 💨 just keep coming to the house not going up the chimney please help thanks
I'm looking to replace my fireplace that is exactly the same as you described but my fireplace is on the second floor and as a wooden doghouse behind i would like to put a woodstove in the place.what is the best heat resistant material to frame doghose.(not sheetrock)?
Hey Matt, i have a fireplace just like this one that i got from someone but its missing that starting collar that you talk about in the video. Would you happen to have any extras i could buy from you?
You don't say why this is the wrong model for Utah. I live in NW Wyoming. My new house came with a Majestic 36 inch SB60. The whole thing just looks flimsy and smokes, even with a window cracked.
You are 100% right. These prefab fireplaces are not made for cold weather. The are for aesthetics only. You would want to replace it with a more efficient heat rated airtight fireplace. Even a freestanding wood stove would be a much better option and more efficient.
I’m pulling my hair out trying to find replacement part for my prefabricated wood burning fireplace. I bent the flapper or damper that’s directly at the top of the firebox. I’m very capable of figuring things out and fixing them but I’ve been having mortal hell looking online for any one that sells them. Tons and tons of people saying what they are but never having the part. Do you know a website or a means to somehow getting my hands on on. 8” round flapper
Do you have any of that Marco fireplace chimney pipe for sale I'm having a hard time locating it
Marco is discontinued. If you send me a photo of what you need I may be able to direct you to the right company.
I'm replacing an identical metal fireplace and replacing it with a woodstove. How do I remove the air cooled chimney. It moves approx. 1 inch upward and that's it. What's the trick?
A flat tip screw driver and bend over the connections and it should pop off. Or put your purse down and yank hard on it! haha!!

hello mrenergy511 how can i get a firebox baffle just like the one in the video , the metal that is holding the bottom refractory panel , i know question if off but i need some help?
I have a Superior wood fireplace that was taken out of a house, i ordered a new flue but they say it might not work with this old unit I have because i do not have a Chimney Starter collar, what do i do if it comes and it does not fit?
The tricky thing with these old Pre-Fab Fireplaces is you need to have the factory made Chimney Pipe that was made for that particular Fireplace model. Without that I would purchase a new one.
mrEnergy511 - I have one hairline crack in the rear of my pre-fab masonry fire box. The rear panel has gaps on either side as well. if I push lightly on this same panel, it will move slightly, Is this reason for concern? Does the crack need to be sealed. like I said it is a hairline crack. Thanks Steve
Hey did you ever find out on your issue? I've been searching around for practically the same problem....
How does one remove prefab fireplace or do you know of a tutorial that shows step by step how to remove the pre fab , especially detaching the chimney to get the prefab out !!!!!
Without seeing what you have... For most prefab Fireplaces they will be nailed or screwed to a 2X4 wall. You will need to remove the mantel and any finish materials within 12" or so from the Fireplace including drywall. Make sure the electrical and gas are turned OFF before cutting into the wall! Disconnect the gas line and electrical wire from the fireplace cut the vent close to the top of the Fireplace, remove any screws or nails holding the unit in place. Now the old Fireplace should slide out. If you see a How-to Video just do it in reverse... Thanks for the question
thank you
Would a cf780 reliance wood stove be good for utah heating a house
I only know of the CF780 Reliance Fireplace. My personal opinion is that an airtight wood burning stove puts out more heat. A good way to know if to look at the BTU's on the website of the stove and see how big of a heating area they are rated for.
Hi we are getting smoke coming through the upper grill into the house in our pre fab stove any ideas how to fix issue ?
I have a lot of ideas on how to fix smoking issues... If smoke is really coming in from the upper Grill then you will need a new Fireplace. My experience however is the smoke is rolling out the top opening of your Fireplace. Step one. When was the last time your Chimney was cleaned? Chimney Sweep!
Do you have video on how to remove the blower mine is not working any more. Can I use my fireplace without blower? Where do I get another one?
I have this same type of fireplace. If I'm wanting to put in an insert do I have to remove this 1st in order to get exact measurements for measuring the back width?
i have a fireplace like that, its in a 97 doublwide manufatured home that is built for Maine where it is located. but like you said, not very efficient.
my handle vent on the side doesn’t go up or down? but goes out and in? how to open?
This handle is for Outside Combustion Air. Not sure what way is open... Try it both ways and feel for for air flow. Good luck
Do these have a blower ?
You can buy after market blowers for any wood burning fireplace. Call your local fireplace retailer and ask about one.
in desperate need of a manual for a Selkirik Metalbestos 3620 Fireplace that I believe is the one in this video, does anybody out there have one i could buy or borrow. Thanks kindly
Is there any way to remove that top vent piece on the front? My kids have stuffed things inside and i would like to get them out.

so you replace a fireplace like that with the upgraded fireplaces in a double wide
This is just an old Wood ZC Fireplace that was removed from a home that was being remodeled. We recycled it! I cant remember if they did a new airtight Wood Burning Fireplace or if they did a Heat rated Gas Burning Fireplace. Not to be confused with a Gas Stove Insert. This was a Zero Clearance Fireplace. Thanks for the comment
Can you help me troubleshoot my new wood burning fireplace?
What is the make and model of your Fireplace? What is the problem?
It's a A36C hearth and home

Thanks,
It's an InterTherm BM36HC
I need to know Where to buy flue pipe like that
Where can I get a used fireplace like that for outdoor use. im building a patio and I'm going to build block all around it.
I don't think you want to put insulation in between.
If you only knew the trouble I’m having this past week , We purchased our first home last year. A home built in 1995 and has this exact insert ! I use the crap out of this fireplace. Living on the shore of Southern New Jersey, we are burning wood 5 - 6 months of the year. Now you have the specs …I can not find this bottom floor refraction panel !!! Anywhere !! I realize this vlog is 2013. We can’t afford a new insert they want 10,000 we don’t have as the COVID BS robbed us of savings. Would you know if I could just simply use firebrick in place of the refraction panel floor ? Or will I destroy what COVID did not. So painful for me to see this refraction panel there in this vlog ... Oh’ if ya only knew 🤨🤨🤨🤨
hey Mike, hoped that worked out for you. Yes this covid stuff is complete authoritarian BS theyre using to bring in their "great reset" where they destroy the economies and most small businesses and create a large class of billionaires. its absolutely criminal. hope youre staying warm.
@@chrisludolph348 yes 👍🏻 Thank you !! I purchased some uncut ones. I cut them out , laid’Ed in and 🔥 all last winter. Never in all my years have I seen such BS being played out in this world. Beside myself! ! ! ! ! ( side Note ) if anyone needs refraction panels and can’t find their model ? Buy the made to cut 3 piece set !!! Easy Peasy ! Just have accurate measurements and you will be fine. Thanks again Chris
Why bother making a video if you are not going to answer any of the questions?
The video on the Fireplace IS the explanation... So why make a comment without a legitimate question? RUclips man! Take it for what it is.
@@mrEnergy511 I understand but, there are many questions below that others have had and you have not answered any of those. If you had, then maybe the answers would help many people. I have a fireplace very similar to this but, I have no idea who the manufacturer is so I cannot find any installation manual. Right now I have the wall above it almost ripped out trying to figure out why it is so drafty in here all the time. I found insulation and sheet rock just lying inside on top of the fireplace and some covering the holes that are supposed to be open for air circulation. It was installed in 1985. Have you found any manufacturing names on these type of fireplaces?
@@dallaspilotcar9293 They are too old to bother with. No parts are available for anything over 15 years old...Sounds like someone Installed your fireplace wrong... It's time to purchase a newer more efficient Fireplace. If you want to Burn Wood look for something airtight. If you want Gas Burning go with a Heat Rated Direct Vent Gas Fireplace.
