      The writing has a billion peoblems in all movies beside this. I find myself amazed how many times the whole movie's plot only happens, because the charachters act out of charachter and make insanely dumb decisions, while they try to portrait everyone as they were actually really clever.
      Also there are so many convinient events that solve some problems in the mocies it is not even funny, and takes away any stake (which superhero movies dont have much anyways IN MOST CASES) and you find yourself bored after the halfway point.
      The problems are deep rooted imo, aside from the "lack of connection" Markus tries to emphasise.
      Also i would not call most Phase 4 movies MiD but straight up bad, as it does not even entertain till its runtime.

    Disney Plus has been both a blessing and a curse for Marvel. On one hand, it gives them avenues to tell solo stories with characters they wouldn’t do in a movie. On the other hand, it’s given them this quantity over quality mindset where it feels they’re too stretched thin for quality control and we are getting shows for the sake of getting shows even if they have no real purpose. Like did anyone really ask for an Agatha or Echo show?

    Dr. Strange 2 encapsulates the writing problem for the MCU.
    3 weeks before production, with many sets and props already made, they approached Michael Waldron to write an entirely new script for the movie. He managed to make a first draft, which they then promptly threw away and then told him to *make it up as they went along*.

Its been less than a year and a couple of movies, but I'm already tired of the "because the multiverse" excuse being used for things popping up.
      How about, after the blip, some people, specially teenagers, return with some form of superpower that affects their bodies in weird ways, causing stress, confusion and a decay in mental health. The sudden nature of that could breed the Academy, where they are taught how to control and channel their powers for good, later "graduating" as superheroes. It could also lead to a lot of relatable storylines for teens struggling to fit in and damaging those they love due to factors they don't understand.
      But nahh... the blip is just a big chunk of nothing and completely irrelevant now. Idk, the lack of heart is really just tangible now.

The only reason we still care enough to hear how it's doing is cause those movies used to have a ton of heart, a ton of development and character moments that would not only stick with us but also build up to climatic "audience loses their shit" moments yeas later.
    The planning and interconnectedness feels lost now. Cap picking up the hammer or finally having his dance with Peggy only hit hard cause it was seeded super early on. But yeah as Cosmonaut said, now it feels like their chucking shit at the wall and seeing what sticks.

Give them Mole Man or a B lister as the villain if you absolutely must have a “bad guy” and focus on the family dynamic and bingo bango bongo Bob’s your uncle. We’ve seen Disney allow villainless family trauma/drama in their animation department. An honorable mention for Phase 4 is Werewolf by Night. Having a light horror movie in the MCU with very little jokes is something I’m very appreciative for. Plus, it being only 20 minutes I think is what gives it a lot of praise as well. They didn’t unnecessarily make an 8 episode series, or a full 2 hour movie. I honestly think they should've gone back to solo movies with their own FLARE after _Avengers: Endgame_ because that's what made the MCU the MCU. It wasn't some knowledge of "yes we KNOW we're good we can do whatever we want." they had no idea it would turn into what it's turned into. That's why Phase 1 feels disjointed; that context is IMPORTANT to understand. They're disconnected with HINTS of being connected because Marvel higher ups didn't KNOW if it COULD be connected.
    There's no reason for phase 4 to feel like it went absolutely nowhere when it went absolutely nowhere. But each movie felt so disconnected from the overarching plot which is the mutliverse war. _MoM_ only went to two multiverses, _Shang-Chi_ felt very out of place even if it was a very well directed and acted and written movie, _No Way Home_ was a wonderful celebration of Spider-Man but more so concludes Peter's trilogy not the MCU's story. _Black Widow_ felt entirely pointless and just introduced Yelena as a new Widow since Nat is gone. _Eternals_ was interesting but again didn't push the narrative forward at all; in fact they actually had the gall to try and say Thanos was RIGHT which is a moral debate you'd never actually be able to have because you SHOULDN'T be able to so readily go with mass genocide to fix over population-the entire point of Thanos' plan is while it may seem like a quick fix, it's still MORALLY wrong no matter how balanced or fair or impersonal the choices of who's dusted are. _Wakanda Forever_ also felt very isolated as a tribute to Chadwick. We don't talk about _Love and Thunder._
    And don't even get me started on the shows that went absolutely nowhere too. AND have now become obsolete because of the films. Moon Knight had an interesting idea, but botched the finale. TFATW does a good job exploring things post Snap, but again doesn't push the narrative FORWARD. WandaVision does a good job exploring grief and loss but again doesn't do anything to set things up OTHER than Wanda going into her fast traveled villain arc. Hawkeye is just there to introduce us to Kate Bishop which is cool. She-Hulk just basically made fun of the marvel formula while still sticking to the marvel formula. Ms Marvel was cute but again just felt like filler. What If...? was interesting at least. But again filler. It did nothing to add to the Cinematic Universe like they said it would-Strange Supreme was NOT in Multiverse of Madness so why say it would tie in?
    Loki is the only one that sets things up. NOTHING ELSE does a THING to continue the arc of Kang the Conquerer. We won't even see him again until _Antman and the Wasp: Quantumania._ Where he gets beaten BY ANTMAN who as much as we love Paul Rudd, is a C tier hero. Not to the level of Stark and Rogers. What were they thinking?
    The writers need to understand that plot and characters are as intertwined as Jack Sparrow and Johnny Depp. You CAN'T have good plot and BAD characters, you can't have GOOD characters and BAD plot. The audience needs to care about BOTH for the movie to stick. Write GOOD solid, ENGAGING stories with SOLID GSU (goals, stakes and urgency) and the rest should come easy.
    Marvel is relying too much on name brand recognition and loyalty at this point. Where once the audience took the Marvel Cinematic Universe for granted, now Marvel Studios is taking us the audience for granted. And that's going to backfire. I still can't believe they had SEVENTEEN PROJECTS released in just a couple of years that's insane.

    I think the biggest issue for Phase 4 is that they were figuring out Disney+ shows while also setting up the multiverse. If it were movies only, I think we could've had some really special movies with WandaVision, Loki, etc. Phase 5 I look forward to since we are going to be setting up Kang Dynasty.
    Nothing was outright horrible, imo, but it was bigger than Phase 1, and with so many storylines starting, it's bigger than it's ever been, but because of it, we haven't gotten it focused yet.

      I feel like with the pandemic ruining their plans they had to reshuffle everything. I feel like Kevin has been worn thin by splitting his attention between the films and shows all while trying to play catch up with what they've got planned. Phase 4 felt rushed in a lot of places and uninspired, like they were going through the motions with setting stuff up with no clear end goal. Turning films into shows or vice versa. It's a clear lack of focus with Marvel rushing to the next major team up all while juggling something as vast as the multiverse and setting up various heroes, who have yet to even meet.
      It seems like Marvel is back peddling a bit with some of their plans by turning some projects like Armor Wars/Captain America/Thunderbolts/Vision Quest into Avengers 4.5 (assembling the new team and bringing the heroes together again so it doesn't feel so disjointed). I feel what Marvel should have been doing is telling only a few origin stories and pick up with all the major franchises, letting them have major implications with setting up future teams or crossover events. There isn't much room for a dozen ground level heroes all while we've got the New Avengers, F4 and X-Men waiting in the wings

    • @kostasrh9529
      @kostasrh9529 Год назад +8

      I believe both Thor 4 and She-hulk to be outright horrible content. The former disregarding established lore (eg, Thor is actually big old alien and not a God) and serious moments cheapened for comedic relief which also didn't stick (Ragnarok and infinity war Thor still held their dramatic aspect). And then you have She-hulk, a series with no clear goal in mind apart from giving the creators a platform to push their wokeness at best and to vent at worst, leading to some of the worst moments of the MCU (srsly, considering that a suicide survivor with child trauma, who was always hunted and feared because of his alternate personality is in a better state has no idea what pressure and fear a girl being catcalled faces?) And even then, all the villainous women of the series are pure comedic relief, all men however are either incompetent or pure evil misogynists.
      And then you have eternals, which imo could have been better but it just introduced many concepts that it was too hard to keep up and also care for the relevant characters.
      For almost everything else, the issue is that people were cheated when the titular character of a show was not even the protagonist (Dr Strange 2, Black Panther 2, etc) something that could only work for Hawkeye imo, since he always was someone doing his own thing in the background.

    One review that I saw for Ant-Man has really summarized the feeling that I have about superhero movies and shows at the moment, it was "Superhero movies are going through a phase right now not unlike the Western's of the 70s", quantity over quality is going to be the ruin of the genre and it can be seen with such a large following right now of anything doing something new(ish) via either a unique medium like into the spiderverse or in subversion of the genre via the boys or invincible.

    It’s not like there wasn’t potential after Endgame. I think Wanadavision set up some interesting stories about the aftermath of the snap, the effects it had on people who stayed, the grief of those who lost people permanently like Wanda and so on. I feel like if we had kept on that track, maybe we wouldn’t be here right now.

    To follow up on your Wandavision and Loki take, That's where I thought we were really headed. Like absolute insane creativity throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. Like we got a buddy cop thriller, keeping time in order, weird tv show montage with a witch grieving their dead boyfriend/husband.
    Everything else is different but has that same twist of "but now their here in a bigger universe" feel to it. With the multiverse I was really expecting "Yo wtf how is this possible" to almost everything. Like a complete horror filmed mcu film (Werewolf by night), an animated film that alters animation styles (somewhat What-if), but instead they all just feel the same even though they are "different".
    What I'm trying to say is that I feel like their holding back, go absolute insane mode. Imagine if Gorr killed a majority of the gods in Love and Thunder in the same way Hella killed all of thor's friends in ragnarok (and how that dealt with the fallout of bruce banner and the hulk), have Doctor Strange go bonkers on the visuals and have him visit areas that make you go "Holy crap what the fuck else even exists that we didn't see."
    If they would just get rid of that lease and go nuts, I feel everyone would love it to a brand new degree. Sure you can throw in the casual formula because goddammit was Shang-chi really good but fully commit. Hell even in Wandavision they should have had Quicksilver suddenly still be alive and somehow be a "leak" into the current universe. Make it so Wanda does have some weight that if unchecked she could heavily fuck up the whole world in an instance.

Imagine NOVA being a presentation based in space grounding the more cosmic part of the mcu and actually building the MCU a little more rather than having a 6 episode series that has to fill itself in during the middle of the series and sort of falling off in the end due to fan expectations/ jamming for time.

    A problem I think is coming is the issue with the stakes. Kang is supposedly going to threaten the multiverse, which is INFINITE. And with INFINITE worlds, nothing really matters anymore. If the heros beat a villain, that doesn't matter because there are infinite worlds/timelines/dimensions whatever where they lost. Similarly, if a character dies, there's an infinite number of worlds where that character survives, so they can just pluck one of those versions and still have them. Everything Everywhere All At Once used the multiverse as more of a metaphor for life and the different opportunities we missed or risks we could have taken, and it worked really well in that film. However Marvel's going to play this completely straight, and so with that comes both the ultimate height of the stakes and the lack of any stakes at all.

    • @mizoreroxy5139
      @mizoreroxy5139 Год назад +28

      I agree. When things get convoluted, there aren't any stakes. And to be honest, I don't even care about the characters anymore. They are being drawn out too much and are starting to resemble each other too much. And in every group of heros, you have the same stereotypes. Reminds me of Supernatural when it gets to the point where nothing mattered because of all the different timelines and they were fighting God and didn't make any sense. This is what Marvel is turning into. Next phase will be them fighting God or suddenly Greek gods are gonna exist along with pagan gods and such.
