This story could have worked as either an 8 episode long miniseries, or a multi-series TV show. Dedicate each part to a different era of time, and let the audience witness the Eternals' relationships grow, fall apart and come together again over the course of hundreds of years. If we spent way longer on the character's ever-changing relationships with humanity, then the eventual moral decision that splits the group would be way more impactful.

For me the best part about this movie was the fight scenes with Makkari. She is the ONLY speedster in movies since Dash to not use the slow motion cliche trope, and her fight with Ikaris is absolutely glorious. We see her speed in real time and it’s jaw dropping how she bodies him until getting caught

I loved Kingo's setup. I genuinely like the idea of an Eternal who is so integrated in human society and just...likes being a "human". He's like "fuck it, I'm gonna be an entire lineage of movie stars and enjoy Earth life."
And yeah, I completely hate how they did him dirty before the final act.
I liked the concepts and lore Eternals introduced, but yeah the execution was poor. Sersi and Ikaris were presented as the main characters and yet they were the absolute least interesting.

Why did Kingo even agree with Ikaris when he loves people far more than anyone there

    • @TheChesnutCafe
      @TheChesnutCafe 2 года назад +25

I disagree, Kingo is pretty consistently portrayed as a selfish narcissist. I don’t think he loves humans, he loves the adoration he gets from humans, I think he sees humans as less than himself, toys and tools to be enjoyed and used. So it’s consistent with his character to not have a problem sacrificing them for the greater good. I also think he left at the end not because of some strong moral conviction, but because he was afraid it had got too dangerous, otherwise he would have stayed with ikarus. I think all his actions are well explained by him being a selfish narcissist.

In movies it's always better to SHOW rather than TELL. There was a scene in the beginning where she protects her students, even using her magic (which could have screwed over her secret identity).
It would have been great to see a scene where she throws herself in front of a human or something similar. Basically, showing that she'd even be willing to put her life on the line for even a single human being (and then the other Eternals save her because they see her strong conviction or something alont the line).

Anyways, she was least of my problem with this movie. The biggest flaw imo is with eternals prime directive not making any sense. The biggest problem I had with this movie is it poses a REALLY interesting thematic question about "free will" and "determinism" -> the characters basically split into two groups based on those who believe they should have the freedom to go against their "determined" path and those who believe that there is a greater good beyond our understanding. That's potentially super interesting.
If they'd have shown us a future of all those lives that COULD exist (that will never happen because of the Eternals' actions) or some form of persuasion against the Eternals who just want to save the world and not just have "freedom = Good" awkwardly fumbled towards the end, we would potentially sympathize with both groups and the break up would mean more.
There's no way you can sympathise with the betraying side because why would you? That's the biggest flaw I think.

First off, the betraying side were the Eternals minus Ikarus, Sprite, and Kingo, so jot that down.
Secondly, I did relate to the "villains" of the story, and I do feel that the victory was actually a loss. Ikarus killed his mentor that he loved and almost killed a few of his beloved family to try to protect billions of lives. The only reason he failed is because he couldn't kill the woman he loved, so he let her choose between him and the greater good or humanity, and she chose humanity. Ikarus is a tragic hero, Sersi is a misguided, accidental villain protagonist.

The audience has already been introduced to these characters thus there not being a main character makes sense. Most audience members don't know shit about the Eternals. I am a comic book reader and even I didn't know who the fuck they were. Even in the comic book fandom they are obscure characters so there is need for a main character whom we can follow and see events occuring in the movie from their POV.

Think eternals could have been better if it was separated into two films.
    Eternals 1:
1.Takes place in the past, Each character gets some development as the film cross the different time periods
    2. Go more in-depth with the conflict between Eternals and Deviants
    3. Showcase why the Eternals are so devoted to Arishem
    4. More depth on some of the minuscule interactions Eternals have with humans, thus showing why they personally care about humanity.
    5. Make them question the impact(or lack there of) on humanity as they see human's self destructive side.
    6. End the movie with them all separating after they "defeat" the Deviants and see humans in conflict(and with Ajak telling Ikaris the truth
    Eternals 2.
    1. Takes place mainly in the present
    2. Give more character depth to the main Deviant bad guy(more screen time)
    3. Build on Ikaris' inner turmoil & separation from Sersi
    4. Reveal the truth about what the Eternals are and their purpose
    5. Have the betrayal occur, and have a more vicious fight with the Eternal "civil war" and eventually fight against the Prime Deviant and his mini horde of deviants.
    6. Then the film can end with them coming together to beat the Prime Deviant & his forces, and stopping the Emergence.
All in all, I think that by separating the film into two you can help build audience sympathy/care for each member of the Eternals; you can give more development for the Prime Deviant to make him more compelling; and you can build on the Celestial mythos with any spare time.

I think the point of the whole moral dilemma was that the earth being destroyed to make a new Celestial is part of the natural cycle of the universe, so that new planets and suns can be made. Without new Celestials, the universe would eventually cease to be. The Eternals obviously don't WANT to kill everyone on the earth, but are torn on if it's their place to disrupt the natural order of the universe, even if its very possible Arishem is lying to them, which is likely. Going by the movies rules, Earth probably would of never been made if it wasn't for a Celestial created the same way. I do agree though, there is way too many characters for this movie, even if I enjoyed Kingos character a lot, and the levity he brought to a very weighty story.

Boy was that true. The movie feels so brutally slow at certain points, while other moments are so rushed. Really feel like they needed to do a better job of deciding what needed to be cut and what didn't or just put the money out for a mini series. I think it could've worked either way. Guardians is proof you can introduce an entire team without characters getting left behind. Infinity war showed you could do a big story with many heroes and still have everyone have satisfying moments. This movie does almost nothing right in setting up this family. Its so disappointing that movies like this can still be made.

The run time of Eternals would have to be way longer to work as a film. I'd imagine something like 3 hours and 30 minutes, which neither Guardians of the Galaxy or Infinity War reaches. For that matter, I don't think there's a proper comparison there. Guardians of the Galaxy had a smaller cast and less lore to cover, and Infinity War has a bunch of characters that the audience has already been introduced to do, so they didn't have to do nearly as much character building. I'll admit the movie is definitely flawed (though it definitely worked for me on an entertainment level), but I don't think any significant improvements could have been made without making it into a series unless many viewers were willing to watch a 3 hour and 30 minute film (which I honestly wouldn't have minded but I'm not the majority). I already anticipated before watching it that the movie would try to bite off more than it could chew and I was right. I fear the same for No Way Home.

The Sprite turn made no sense and felt shoehorned in, but they did a good job with Ikaris and his layered motivations. The worst offender for me was Ajak deciding a week before the emergence that after 7,000 years of being fully dedicated to her mission, maybe they ought to stop it. Okay. I guess.
What I really would have liked was for the film to combine its two dead-end but interesting story arcs, Thena's memory loss and the Deviants. Both of them are flawed creations of the Celestials that were going to be discarded for the mission. I think it would have been heroic for Thena to find common ground with the main Deviant and try to defend him from Ikaris, rather than slap chop him. I think that would have been more heroic, and a fitting conclusion to her own story angle. Learning from Gilgamesh and being a protector instead of a Celestial killing machine. It would have been okay for the main Deviant's story to not have enough time, but let him survive to the next movie. Thena letting him escape would have been interesting and IMO satisfying.

Yes he likes earth and his life there, but everything after the “last” deviants are destroyed is almost like a retirement for all of them. And for Kingo, the job he was programmed to do and Ikaris are way more important to him than his retirement home. He would fight to save earth from deviants and help to stop the earth ending, only until it backed up against him doing his job. With the traveling around the world to tell their friends that Selma Hayek is dead, there's almost no reaction from any of them. There's no sense of a connection between Ikarus and Sersi, because they're both doing the same style of flat line delivery back and forth at each other. *THANK YOU* for not being like some of those "other" channels out there who keep claiming that the "reason" this film failed is solely due to the "diversity" and "wokeness." 🙄 Like you said, the reason this film failed is because it was BORING. Plain and simple. I felt at times it was even a little aimless, which is crazy because the main plot is pretty straightforward. I was REALLY looking forward to this film, _especially_ the hyped up love story between Ikaris and Sersi. The trailers and commercials made it seem like this was a large part of the plot.
But...I was _extremely_ let down with the final project. Like you said, these two had no real reason to _like_ each other, and it pains me to say this because they looked _so good_ together in all the promo shots. I think much of the issue had to do with the fact that Marvel chose the WRONG director for this film. Chloé Zhao wanted to make a different movie than what Marvel hired her for, and it shows. This would have fared better as a Disney+ series. The characters would have had more time to be fleshed out while giving non comic fans a better idea of who these characters are. I actually hope they don't give up on this. _Thor: The Dark World_ was INCREDIBLY boring, but they were able to bounce back with _Ragnarok._ (which I'm not a fan of, but I admire the way they reinvigorated the franchise)

Actually, think about it, ive seen a couple channels talk about this. If you think about it there is a reason why diversity was a problem for this movie. Not because it was divers obviously, not at all.
It was great, we saw different sexualities, races and all that but the problem is. Everytime i think about the marketing for this movie, all i hear is diversity. I think Marvel, for this one, focused way too much on the diversity part of the movie that they forgot about the movie itself. Like, the actors and the concept of what the characters are, became more important than the characters themselves.
i feel like the writers thought because they wrote one diverse trait about a character that means its a well written character. The biggest example of this is Makkari.
There is almost nothing done with her. All we know is she is a deaf speedster. But she is just about the most underwritten character in the movie. Nothing more is explored with her.
And i think that sucks because it takes from the impact the diversity in this movie could have had.
One mcu movie that definitely didnt fall victim to this was black panther, despite the fact that its an all black movie. which is of course diverse, you never see that in hollywood.
It was one thing they took into account. And then wrote the characters the way they saw fit. That was a lot simpler because they were just using one diverse thing which was race compared to
eternals which tried to do everything. They wanter different races, sexualities, mental illnesses, and disabilities without giving the characters any fleshed out storylines.

that's why i'll never shut up about guardians of the galaxy. They are the perfect example of a family in the mcu.
the perfect amount of main characters, and all the elements that turn them into a family, by the end, just makes sense. their differences and good individual characterization brings out a genuine connection. They are flawed, make mistakes but learn to overcome it and accept each other.
Even the final scene where they all share the power stone with the "power of friendship" doesn't seem corny or forced cause it's written so well.
and they use those elements on their two movies and it actually develops the characters and their personal relationships in a such natural way, and in such a short period of screen time compared to other mcu films.
i think that if they gave more thought into, eliminating some eternal characters from the mix and actually writing convincing individual personalities and building a strong relationship between those characters, adding more relevant scenes that actually show that - they could've done like gotg. All in one movie.

I have no idea how this movie turned out to be such a let down considering how hyped this movie was and how this was a movie by Award winning screenwriter Chloe Zhao. This makes how the movie turned out actually worse for me because of the high expectation. It's sad really, and also especially because the representation in this movie means every dismisses it anyway. But it's hard for anyone to be interested in it despite the good. But I have a feeling marvel won't look at it that way and make dumb decisions to not take risks like this again just because this one didn't work out.

You would have thought that the Celestials/Eternals would have opposed Thanos since his plan to cut the universe’s population in half would directly interfere with the Celestial’s birthing process.
However we should consider that it’s likely the Celestials didn’t know about Thanos at all.
We don’t know much about the Celestials yet overall, seems most of them just float around doing their jobs and not talking with anyone apart from their Eternals. And it seems that loyal Eternals don’t leave their designated planet without permission, and those planets are usually not advanced enough to venture out into space or get visitors from space.
So they’re not going out and hearing about Thanos, and no ones visiting to tell them about him either.
So the Eternals wouldn’t know about Thanos unless he visited a planet they were on and halved the population, and those Eternals survived.
I don’t get the impression that their are a huge amount of planets being inhabited by Eternals at the same time, we know it’s more than 1, but even it were 100 at the same time, Thanos and his crew are still just one army going across the entire universe by themselves.
So it’s mathematically unlikely Thanos would stumble onto an Eternal-populated planet. And even if he did I imagine he’d kill the Eternals as well as any other planetary defences. So they wouldn’t survive Thanos anyway.
Basically none of the Eternals are gonna hear about Thanos and tell the Celestials. And the Celestials don’t talk to anyone else it seems.
I bet if they did know about Thanos they’d have tried to stop him.
But even Doctor Strange didn’t know about Thanos, and he’s looking for major threats in the universe.
Also even if they did know about him, it said in the movie that they only deal with Deviant-related threats.
Seems super counter-productive I agree, but they aren’t planet defenders, they’re deviant-exterminators exclusively

According to some comic book lore, Thanos is actually an Eternal with Deviant genes, due to some mishap or other and apparently is a very important one. Normally this kind of info wouldn't matter in the slightest at the moment since the MCU hasn't established the Eternals until now, but at the end of the movie, the Eternal Eros (Harry Styles) introduces himself as Thanos's brother, meaning that the Celestials/Eternals KNEW about Thanos. Whether they knew about his goals, who knows, but I just think it's a bit of a reach for the Celestials who reside over literal galaxies to not know about whole planets being razed due to the war-path Thanos was on, and even more so for them to not do anything about it.

    • @goten339
      @goten339 3 года назад +5

@@chrislee1133 yeah I’m interested to see how they’re gonna make that make sense at all. I personally think Thanos already works as just a powerful conquerer with misguided morals and philosophy but I’m open to seeing how the MCU develop that angle.
You’re right the Celestials do reside over entire galaxies, but it doesn’t seem like they actually interact with them much? It’s also unclear if most Celestials even interact with each other.
Ego claimed to be a Celestial who spent millions of years just floating by himself as he developed his abilities, never once being contacted by another Celestial.
These are beings who’ve excited for billions of years, maybe more?
Thanos going on a warpath is a relatively very recent development. Thanos gets all the stones in a pretty short amount of time too.The Celestials might just not take notice to that sort of thing.
Doesn’t seem like they talk to anyone apart from the Eternals they create, and it’s unclear how many their actually are too, we only see a handful.
Even if say 100 exist at once, and each resides over 1 galaxy each, or 100 each even, just for fun, the universe is made up of billions of galaxies, and multiple dimensions and all that. They might just not notice.
Also you can make the argument that even in galaxies they control, people probably avoid them.
They’re ancient space-giants bigger than planets with the power to destroy planets. I’d avoid that personally.

The best way I can describe this movie, is one of those anime where the writer had to cram 20 volumes of source material into around 12 episodes. It has all the hallmarks of an edg shonen but non really shonen, the really fucked up cosmic horror plot twist, the 8 to 12 or so group of designated main characters who get introduced one by one with a vague mythological backing with like half of them being evil, the use of very specific superpowers in tactical fight scenes, edgy pretty boy rivals that are also kinda artificial humans. Having it is half the battle, actually executing a fantastic movie seems to be something studio's think diversity exempts them from which is so against having a diverse film in the first place. It's not about getting audiences to think of one film as slightly morally superior to others, it's about actually setting a precedent in the film industry to have a greater variety in it's tools with which to tell stories and the way to do that is to make fantastic movies using those tools, not just showing off you used them once as a marketing gimmick and then going back to your old stuff.

Also, there's a lot of people out there saying they hate the film because it's so different, so realistically the truth is somewhere in the middle. Honestly, I think a lot of the flashbacks were awkwardly shoved in at weird times, so they ended up really messing with the pacing... combined with the fact that there wasn't really a proper throughline for the focus of the movie.
I actually think that the present day stuff is the most interesting part of the movie, and if they had focused on who our characters are now without constantly going back to explain who they were and what happened to them, the script could have been much tighter and more focused.
I mean the first scenes in the present day were really good, and well-paced... but then the first flashback hits, and it barely gives us new information about their relationship, and that whole scene feels like kind of a waste of time to me...
But as the movie is currently, it reverberates between characters and their arcs so frequently, focusing enough on each character to give you a whiplash of information, but not enough focus to satisfyingly flesh them out, or give their arcs satisfying conclusions. And by the end of the movie, I can barely take them seriously...
I mean... the character I take the least seriously is Ikarus... I hate Ikarus, and at the end, I understand why he was crying, and why he couldn't stop Sersi. But I was also laughing when he flew himself into the sun, because I just cannot take him seriously as a character. The movie has given us no reason to like him and no reason to care about his moral quandaries.
Plus, it's very on the nose to have a character called Ikarus, and have him purposely fly into the sun...
I don't think this movie is completely bad, but in its current form it's very disjointed, poorly paced, and it's really hard to get attached to any of the characters. And that's a shame, because there's a lot of really good ideas and themes in this movie.

Thanks for reaffirminng that this was exactly what I thought it was. A movie focused around an ensemble cast that have apparently been here this whole time that's also centered around defeating a huge cosmic threat isn't going to turn out well. IW and Endgame handled having such a huge cast by firstmost being a culmination/celebration of everything they've built up to since the beginning, and also our suspension of disbelief is far gone enough to accept that there are talking raccoons and a shrinking guy in this universe even if we haven't seen them before. But nothing about this movie looked like it was gonna turn out alright, a lot of bland trailers, the characters powers from what I know is being really strong or really smart + angelina jolie has dr strange light weapons, faceless villains that's only known motive is aaaa i gotta destroy the earth because im the deviant energy of the dark side or some shit.
And as an unfair comparison The Suicide Squad was so good. I would say this movie was able to carry the weight of a brand new cast and having the premise be a team of supervillains doing the United States' dirty work, which only unravels further to have the main threat be caused by the US' interventions made it such an interesting and fun concept in the world of superheroes. The way Gunn was able to make us care about a team of d-list comic book characters was so fun because they were all so weird and memorable, and because the team written to actually play off one another.
