I use glass cutting mat or something that is not porous. Wet both sides of the paper and the cutting mat. It stops the paper from bending and keeps it wetter for longer. If you need your paper to stay wetter for even longer, lift up painting and re-wet cutting mat.
Is it just the solid sheet of mat that you use or is there glass somehow involved? Maybe wording my question differently will help.... What is 'glass cutting mat' - is it actual glass?
@@WhatsMarlyUpTo It's like a self healing cutting matt that crafters use, but it's made of toughened glass. You could use a glass worktop protector or glass chopping board. A lighter choice is plastic display boards.
As a seasoned watercolor artist, I still learned some fab tips from you! Great tutorial. Thank you for being so authentic & true to yourself. Beautiful results!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! As a fairly new watercolorist I am often bewildered by all the different ways of doing things etc. your narration was wonderful and very clear. Especially how you worked through and explained when things started to get out of control! And also your ability to address painting details on why some things work or why they don’t! New subscriber!
I haven't done watercolor in ages but I can tell you do things the way I do. I am my own worst critic and doubt myself but this is wonderful however it ( in my opinion) was perfectly beautiful before you did the last two trees and I would have dabbed thar first area only but I'm not the one with the youtube tutorial. I love that you walk us through each process and explain why you did because there are so many on here that just leave you hanging with questions un answered so thank you so much, it's beautiful ❤❤❤
I cannot wait to try this. I have been getting so frustrated doing Evergreen tree paintings. I did your Birch tree Tutorial and it was so much fun. You are a really good teacher. This time I decided to watch and pay attention before I attempt to do this tutorial but I am so looking forward to it. Thank you Julia, I hope you keep this channel going And keep teaching.🥰
To keep your paper from buckling and also to make it stay wet longer, wet the underside with clean water before starting your painting and it will stay flat on your surface. Hope that helps!
This might be within limited capabilities, especially being monochromatic. I just ordered one of those Grumbacher 4620 brushes from Amazon--I got a size 12 as they're only $5.99! Today my Stonehenge 10" x 14" 300 lb. cold-press block arrived--impressively heavy! Saving that for when I can actually maybe create something and not waste it. I have some Arches hot-press to work with plus lots of heavy bristol board for play/practice and finally tomorrow I'll have more paint to work with, new half pans coming. Right now am watching lots of YT videos, learning a lot from different watercolorists. One thing I really like about watercolors is that it's so loose and spontaneous, you kind of let the paint do its thing--so different from my usual highly controlled airbrushing where you don't want paint doing anything on its own. I'm subbed...so many techniques to learn!
Loved your foggy forest. Buckling? You might try some washi tape made into a circle (so it's double sided) and stick it on the middle of your paper & on the table. Although, it makes it hard to turn your paper around - I have a lazy susan that I put my work on if I need to move it around a lot.
I really really like this one ,.. I see from the listed supplies use use Meeden tubes?,. is this your paint of joice ,..I hope so because I just ordered,.lol,.
Another painter suggested first wetting the entire back before the front, to get the paper to stay wet longer and not buckle as much. I haven’t actually tried it yet.
I'M DEFINITELY GONNA TRY THIS OUT! THERE'S NO TIME WASTED EVERYTIME I WATCH YOUR TUTORIALS! ❤️❤️❤️! May I know the brand of watercolor you're using in this video?
I loved it before you put the ones in the front... they look a little out of proportion... but the overall look is fantastic... i think you were quite surprised ass well... 😊😍
If the paper starts to warp, turn it over and put clean water in the shape of an X across the back with a full brush or two of water. Problem fixed in 1 minute. Happy painting❗😊
I just watched another artist wet the back and front of his painting with a sponge (an artist sponge not a sink sponge) to keep the paper down on the table instead of tape :)
Aside from a comment you made about how you sometimes tape your paper down…you never mentioned anything about the issue of the paper buckling when using wet-on-wet. I presume then, that you stretched the paper prior to this tutorial? It would be a good idea to mention that, especially for beginners.
Wet both sides of the paper and place it on a piece of glass. The water on the back side should keep the paper attached to the glass. The top should dry while the bottom side stays damp and in contact with the glass. Not sure if it will work for this technique but you could at least start this way.
Black from the tube in watercolors will make a hole in your paper. Try mixing blue red and green to make a warmer black. Also black mixed with yellow will make a nice winter green.
I hope you enjoy this real time misty forest tutorial! Would you like to see more of these moody paintings?
I’m back painting and all because of your big inspiration! Thank you
Yes!
@@carmensol34 That means a lot, thank you for this!
yes, would like any of your Painting!

yes, Hen, i do the same - wetting both sides is the key, I think
You guys teach me so much! :)
Yep, stays wet for ages! 👍

Thank you for the lovely comment Ellen! Hopefully the channel keeps growing so that I can continue to make these tutorials.
Nice techniques Julia! Takes me back to my first years of discovering my hidden talents-watercolors! Oh how I miss it! My small 5x7 cards! ❤
If you miss it, get back into it! Watercolor is so calming :)
Very nicely painted

Love that I just found you .
Loved tutorial

Yes please !
This is lovely! I enjoyed watching you develop the misty effect. I’m going to try it, but….We’ll see! You used just black and green?❤
Even just black would work!
wonderful - they always are!

Try gently wetting the back of the paper to help buckling 😉
Thank you!
Cool
Thanks!
I really really like this one ,.. I see from the listed supplies use use Meeden tubes?,. is this your paint of joice ,..I hope so because I just ordered,.lol,.

What size of paper are you using? Excellant design on this ❤
5.5x7 I think?
Another painter suggested first wetting the entire back before the front, to get the paper to stay wet longer and not buckle as much. I haven’t actually tried it yet.
It works :) I've received this advice a few times in this comment section :)
I’ve heard if you wet both sides of the paper it will help to prevent the buckling.
Ty

Thank you! It's all linked in the description of every video :)
Glad I’m not the only one that can’t get the price tag/sticker off the paintbrush… Lol.
Hahaha! It was a combination of laziness and also being able to distinguish the new one from the used one easily.
I loved it before you put the ones in the front... they look a little out of proportion... but the overall look is fantastic... i think you were quite surprised ass well... 😊😍
Wet the back of the paper also. It will lay flat then and stay wetter longer
:)
put water on the back side of the paper too! it'll also stay wet longer
Wet both front and back and lay onto a hard smooth enamel or plastic surface. The paper will lay flat.
Thank you, a dozen others suggested this too and it definitely works :)
If the paper starts to warp, turn it over and put clean water in the shape of an X across the back with a full brush or two of water.
Problem fixed in 1 minute.
Happy painting❗😊

No I didn't stretch the paper. I don't know if it was this tutorial but I started wetting the back of the paper first to prevent buckling.
I spray the reverse of the paper before wetting the front.
A few others have said the same, thank you :)
Love it except for the harsh cloud you made. Soften that, and you're aces.
Wet both sides of the paper and place it on a piece of glass. The water on the back side should keep the paper attached to the glass. The top should dry while the bottom side stays damp and in contact with the glass. Not sure if it will work for this technique but you could at least start this way.
What brushes are you using
My materials are listed in the description :)
wet the back of the paper as well, thoroughly, and stick it to yours surface.
Ty

Luckily I've never made a hole in my paper in all the years I've been painting :)
Tried to find you on Patreon and can’t! Can you link me?
I don't really have it set up! No obligation at all but if you'd like to support me, check out my etsy shop (link in description). :)
You probably already have an answer, but if you water the back first, it'll keep it from bucking without tape 😊
Haha yes indeed, many of the comments under this video say the same thing ;)
You can wet the back of the paper first then the front side. Then the paper won't curl up like that...
Thank you - half of the comments are saying this haha.
if you spray water on the back side of the paper first, you wouldn't get a buckling problem.
Yes many people have suggested it, it works great!
Water the backside of the paper
Ty!
Wet both sides of your paper. It will lay flat.
:)
Hate to be picky but the trees your painting are spruce not pine trees. Thanks for the tips. Great tutorial.
I universally call evergreens pine trees because most people refer to them as such/it works with the algorithm ;)
