How to: Drain fuel/water separator.... 2006 Ford F-350 6.0 Powerstroke

- Just a quick short video showing me draining the water in my fuel water separator. Also keep in mind if you have a warning light saying it has water in fuel it might be your fuel additive. So if you do this job and still have the light it is your fuel additive. My truck will show a light when I use Diesel Service winter fuel additive.
Just did this and drained about a half gallon of mostly water. Not a strong diesel smell. Thanks for the video exactly as you showed and real easy.
Thank you! Mine came on just a few minutes ago. Mine is an 05, I had to use a 7/32 though. It took 2 minutes. Mine had at least a half a gallon. I did it in the Walgreens parking lot, while waiting on my prescription. Thanks Zach!!!
Your very welcome!!
I am glad that you watched the video, very glad that it helped you in any way. Thanks for taking your time to comment!!!!!
that 6.0 sounds great how reliable has it been for you
Sarah Seay: haven't had any problems with it yet!!
A chick that will drain her own water out of filter on diesel truck (in the Walgreens parking lot), you don't see that everyday! You are supposed to let it drain until it stops.
1/2 a gal?
great job, we love the 6.0 diesel at Ride Auto sales
I would hope fuel gets in also, that way it doesnt freeze when you go years without draining (i.e. winter) but very good man!
Thanks for the info haven't had my light come on yet but when it does I know what to do 👍
Thanks
DIY-Zac
thank you excellent information, I thought the matter was more serious, really thank you very much
Thanks, Zach. Have you all ever removed the "horizontal fuel conditioning module" from the frame? This is done to really get inside the HFCM and clean it out. You would be surprised how much gunk builds up there.
To do this, you move the front drive shaft out of the way, use the fuel line removal tools to disconnect all four lines, remove the electrical connections (2), then three bolts off the frame. The HFCM is now in your hands. (Rick Hewitt has a video on this procedure here on youtube.)
Open it up and really clean the HFCM out. Now is the time you can upgrade that pot steel hex plug with a brass unit, to prevent rust-shut of the steel plug. Now is also the time to replace both fuel filters. One is located within the HFCM. The other is up on top of the engine. Always use ONLY Ford fuel filters, as Ford owns the patent on these units and all others are not up to spec.
RTFLDGR My truck turned off and I had to get towed home. The “Fuel in gas” light had been on for about a week. I drained it but still not start. When I drained it, there was a bunch of gunk in it. Any ideas as to why I doesn’t start... I had just bought the truck 1 week before.. pretty cool stuff 🤦🏻♂️
@@Charlie-pd1wv Mine just did this. I have drained water and replaced filters but still no start. Did you ever figure out why it wouldn't start?
I just bought an 03 excursion with the 6.0 and im replacing this whole unit. 290k, it had a good run. Same issues as you two. No starts, pump sounds like crap, corrosion inside the plug. Im replacing it all.
Thanx mate, I'll try this tomorrow and hope that will solve the promlem I have. Hope to find a fule filter change movie too..
Thanks for this video. Enjoyed it.
Thank you you did great showing me what to look for
I just had the same issue/question. It seemed like 2 minutes of a slow steady stream after 30 seconds of a lot of fuel. After a while I put the plug back in and asked the 6.0 fb page to see what they thought. Thanks for the vid.
No problem glad the video could help! I recently posted another video because I had to replace the sensor. Thanks for watching! Thank you very much for commenting!!!
It turns out, if you open the gas cap and the smaller fuel filter before opening the separator or lower/bigger filter, it keeps the fuel from draining. I did it yesterday to replace the filters and it was a very short drip.
Nice I just got this truck you've already saved me money thanks
I am very pleased to hear this, the whole point my of channel. Thank you for your time and commenting also thank you for watching!
DIY-Zac
For a second there I thought you were going to say "my first time using an
Allen wrench".
Je je je je je. you are not kitting.
Mission accomplished your video was a help to me.
Thank you very much, awesome to hear. Thanks for the comment!
DIY-Zac
Dude, thank you for this video.
Thankfully mine had about half as much water as yours did.
I just bought my 250 a few weeks ago and am going through all the filters and fluids.
Thumbs up
If you loosen the plug with the allen wrench you can reach over the drive shaft so that you don't have diesel fuel running down your arm.
Big thanks bro it's helping🖒🖒👌
Thanks for the info bro 🤙🏻
Thanks so much....I just followed your video
Good video, was just as you showed us but was 2006 f550
Thanks I love hearing that my videos are not only being watched but they are helping!!
Thanks for your time, thanks for commenting!!!
HBZ-Zachary
Awesome video
Thanks pal
Zach, I'm like you I didn't know how much to drain out. I filled up over half of a paint tray but it as still running out. I too thought fuel was coming out so I stopped. My light came back on so I am going to do it again and drain it all out. Thanks for the video.
Sparkie Waller you may need to replace the sensor. I had to, I also posted a video of that.... thanks for watching!!! Thanks for commenting...
Zach, Does anyone know if you are to let the entire reservoir drain or not. There was a lot of water and other black looking stuff in my pan when drained. I am still going to drain it again and if that doesn't work I will replace the sensor. Thanks for giving me a heads up on the sensor.
YOUR VIDEO HELPED THANK YOU
Bruce Moss: Thank you for watching, thanks for taking your time to comment!
Glad to know it's helping!!!

Go by the International Truck Dealer and pick up a plug from the parts department like they use in the International Trucks that have the 6.0 or what they call the 363 CI engine. It will cost less than ten bucks and you can use a 1/2 or 9/16 to open it up, also you only need to let it drain tell you don't see anymore water. I have seen as little as 2 drops of water a time or two. Hope this helps.
Thanks for watching, thanks for commenting!
Thank you I needed that. So do you have the tank empty or full tank
Thank you. That may help.
good video !
PS 911 emulsifies water in the fuel to burn it, the PS white bottle and Howes will separate (demulsify) the water and allow it to drain out. Its still good to purge the water separator because some deposits usually drain out with the fuel.
Great video
City Kid: Thanks for watching!!
Zachary
Very, very helpful, thanks. Oh by the way a new subscriber.
Thank you and I am glad it helps! Thanks for watching and thanks for subscribing.
DIY-Zac
Thanks... we just bought an '06 F-350 6.0 PS and it has that message in the display screen where the odometer shows up... going to try this to clear the code out. Thanks!
How long should you let the water fuel separator drain? I've done it twice and it's ran for different times the last time fuel just kept coming out for over 30 minutes
thank you
Very Good!...
Gracias amigo
Thanks!😀
Thanks helpful
It’s helping. It is
Glad it could be a help for ya!
DIY-Zac
Mine seemed like it had never been touched since day one from the previous owner. Completely seized and took quite a while to come loose. Penetrating fluid was my friend
Nice gotta love that.
Glad you got it taken care of.
Thanks for watching
DIY-Zac
@@BackyardDIY-Zachary thanks and thanks for posting!
Thanks
Cool
thanks
Jason McKain: Thanks for watching, glad that you enjoyed the video.
Backyard DIY-Zachary
A ratcheting hex works better (1/4" drive 7mm worked for me). I used the VIM stubby metric set on amazon
Brian Hague: I agree, I have a set of them from harbor freight. Thanks for watching!
Did the engine light come on and your red a code?
Yea I️ do have a scanner but I️ unplugging my battery’s and reset it and it has not came back on so thx anyway keep in touch..
Awesome, I am glad that you got it figured out!
Zachary
Hey love your videos, I did this and a bunch of brown residue came out! Do you have a video on how to remove the hfcm cover to get the gunk inside out?
No sorry didn't go any further with my machine.
Thanks for watching and taking your time to comment!
BackyardDIY-Zac
Backyard DIY - Zachary, Damn ok
Mine also and my plug is rusted so the guy that had the truck before me didn't drain it guess i need to buy a brand new water separator cause mine is trashed inside! Dammit
Hello, I recently purchased a 2006 F350 with the 6.0 and the water in fuel light continues to stay on. how long should you keep the water separator valve open for? does the system have a separate tank to store the water? If you leave the water separator valve open long enough, will you eventually be draining straight diesel? I only ask because I left my valve open for 1.5 hours and it was still draining at the same rate as when I initially opened it. Thanks!
Yes that's more then long enough to wait for it. If you want you can take the sensor out and clean it but i opted and made a video of just replacing the sensor I have not had a problem since replacing the sensor! Thanks for watching and good luck with your repairs!!!
thanks for the video
Do you know of an easier way to drain the fuel bowl under the hood so it is not that messy?
may have missed it but what size alen wrench is it?
what size allen wrench did you use?
Ni ce vid... where did get those gauges on the left
Check out my other video of me installing them, it's on my channel.
i drained my separator and started it up started with no problem. went inside came back out couple minutes later and it’s back on
Just drained mine, thanks for the help. Why do they put that stupid fuel line right in the way?
Thanks for watching and taking your time to comment.
Who knows why they do silly stuff lol. Half the time working on my truck I just scratch my head thinking how did someone think this was a good idea. Entirely my opinion, they do it just based solely off cost. For example newer cars don't have drain plugs on the transmission pan. Simple to be cheaper to make one solid piece lol.
Thanks again for watching!
DIY-Zac
How can I do it on my 1987 Chevy van 6.2??
Is this the same for the 07 f250s
Can you show how to replace brake cord? Mine ripped 😢
get the new screw you can put in with you hand its brass it dosen't carode the way the old ones do
Right on, thanks for the tip.
DIY-Zac
Aloha bruddahs 🤙
Having an issue with my turbo boost I've changed out pigtailed for the actuator or change out glow plugs did the control unit for the glow plugs everything you can think of the vicm but I'm still having no boost
happened to me also. A diesel mechanic buddy of mine removed the turbo and cleaned the carbon out of it. Ran like a new truck.
Any idea where I can find this part in the US or the part number to find it on Amazon?
Just look up for your Ford and it will pop up. Use fuel water filter plug should bring it right up.
Maybe you should make a video if you don't know exactly how to do it or exactly what your doing. I think I did it right let's go drive it and see! Lol
Maybe I shouldn't? I assume that's what you meant.
Disculpa tengo un preblema en mi traco 350 Ford 2004;tiene disen en el infriador q puedo aser
Is it the same process on f550 6.0 2003
tipoux1992: It should be, check underneath for that box with the pump attached. If you have it then it will be the same process. Good luck!!
I have a 2000 f-250 that with a 7.3 powerstroke that I inherited from my dad. I can't figure out where the water drain is?
On top of engine, behind high pressure oil pump is fuel filter canister.. A small yellow handle turn clockwise 1/4 turn to open.
I just did this to my 6.0 which has 340k miles and it stopped after a few minutes other ppl said that there's just kept on going do you know why mine would have stopped? Idk if that is what it's suppose to do or not
Tommy Bragalone: Not sure why it would stop and I don't want to lie to you, did your light go off? Did it prime back up and run? If it's working good run it lol. Thanks for watching thanks for commenting!!!
Backyard DIY the light never came on I just thought why not drain it. It was very easy to do
Tommy Bragalone : Good thinking ahead!! Awesome to hear people doing preventative maintenance!!
how do you find lift screen in 2006 ford powerstroke diesel
Lynette Amann. maybe your talking about the fuel pump screen, if so you would have to drop your fuel tank to get the screen off...
OK thanks
The plug on mine was soft like it was made of marshmallow. I've got to take the whole thing off now because the plug is completely wrung out. Tired a screw remover but it won't go deep enough.
Yeah sounds like your best bet, that really sucks though sorry to hear that.
Keep me posted let me know how it goes.
Backyard DIY-Zachary
Mine also. It is brass and just mushed up. I have bought a petcock plug to make the draining easier. I am thinking of drilling two holes to take the plug out.
@@TheTyrial86 that may work! Good tip/idea
I got the new replacement from Ford. It's a new petcock design..
@@tazaxx21 right on. Thanks for the update.
What if the light come right back after you do that?
Not sure but I would guess your sensor for water. Sorry I can't be more help.
You had the "Water in your Fuel" light turn on? and you didn't go ahead and change your fuel filter while you were down under there in the snow?? It's your main water/fuel separator! It's right there and would have taken another 5 minutes and $20! My brother in law rarely changed his Chevy fuel filter, and replacing his rusted out fuel injectors cost him $8,000! Seriously, dude, get back under there and change that filter! And change it often! Don't rely on the light! Thanks for doing the video nevertheless. (BTW, yeah, it'll drain about a quart of fuel into your painter's tray, just let it drain; no big deal.)
Rusted out fuel injectors, you say? Thats bullshit
I agree Brad, have to change the fuel filters too.Where do you find them for $20?The best price I've found is $40 on amazon.com.They are over $80 Canadian at the dealerships.I only use ford oil and fuel filters.I've had alot of trouble with water in my fuel.Removed the fuel tank entirely and cleaned it out last year.Should be a drain on the fuel tank too.
Hey man !
It’s a metric 6!!!
But thanks !
Also it takes awhile before it came back on
Is there anything I can do if mine is rounded?
I would say try one of the stripped bolt kits, they sell them everywhere. Hardware stores and auto part stores.
They should have the kits.
Best of luck!!
DIY-Zac
Mine is also rounded, did the kit work for you?
Moving_Monkey 18 I didn’t buy the kit. I just messed with it & slowly got it
Are you insinuating the water separator is taking out the additive you put in before it gets to the engine? Maybe that is why they say not to put in any additives.
Tim Steinkamp : definitely not saying that.
How to install fuel presser gage.becoz my f350 6 liter loosing power and some time hard to start, on high rpm works good. What i found i opend fuel filter (small) and there was no fuel.can some ine help
The 6.0 has 2 fuel filters. Try changing them both.
Don't be scared of it son pull that plug on out of there and let her drain, word of advice get you a Milwaukee 3/8 drive speed ratchet... Allen wrenches are for quitters LOL 🤣
