      GlitchZ They have a valid point, the guy just pointed her out as better than everyone else in the class which clearly pissed people off. Telling them no matter how hard they try they will never be as good or even close to her. Doesn't matter if school, college or university that is a sure fire way to turn a large majority of a class against a single person in the space of 3 minutes. That will cause bullying and it doesn't mean you don't have a ''set'' as you described it as, it is common sense what would happen. Dropping out of the class from that outcome is the wisest move for most people and they would take that option and think about taking it next year or what not. I don't get your idea that because someone is bullied it means they don't have a ''set'', it is just idiotic in all honesty.

The real world doesnt care about your feelings and a lot of times what kind of paper (degree) you have. This is college.....not elementary. Its time to be a big boy/girl and stop worrying about bullying. Ue was straight foward and honest with everyone in the class. Most students should wish they had a professor like this

    I think the biggest problem with this scene, as evocative as it is, is the subtext. If the message was 'don't try to be a genius, you either are or you aren't', I can agree with that. However, the text seems to push the idea that 'if you're not a genius, you're nothing', and that's bullshit. If the entirety of history and literature depended solely on geniuses and legendary figures, human history would've been shockingly brief. Someone has to carry on the styles, techniques, and procedures brought about by genius, or they get lost to time forever once the originator dies. People have to recognize genius, appreciate it, and do their best to emulate it in order for it to carry on, and in doing so you pave the way for the next great advancement by making sure the past isn't lost forever.
    I went to college to become a writer, and several years later it's not looking like I'll ever be one of the greats that gets remembered for all time. Matter of fact, I've even thought about becoming an electrician just to have a reliable paycheck. But there's no reason I can't be both a working man AND a writer, and there's no reason I shouldn't write just because I'm not some prodigy. Everything counts. If Shakespeare was a wave in the ocean, I'm probably nothing more than a single raindrop. That said, if it never rained, the ocean would just dry up entirely over time. I may very well never achieve greatness in my life on my own, but I can still be a part of greatness, of something bigger than myself.

Everyone was very intelligent for a few moments in their lives because they concentrated hard at that time. If their intelligence at that time reached the point of genius then they were geniuses then.

      +Mikey Lewis It's a matter of being born with it then grinding for it.
      Someone born with a laundry list of dysfunctions like downs, severe mental retardation, blindness, one foot, and asthma is going to have an statistically impossible struggle to actually have that genius, and then have the ability to grind. It's a clear hyperbole, but it illustrates that if you didn't have it it's not going to show up in your lap.

    • @Glitchfaction

      It is a matter of being born with it. We are limited by our own minds. Some peoples minds function different and simply have better creative and problem solving abilities. Now that person has to use those abilities to get smarter or that gift is a waste. But if you dont have those abilities, no amount of studying will make you a genius. Its like musicians. Ive seen peoole that can pick up a guitar and a month later they are shredding like crazy while others i know have olayed for 10 years and cant play that well. Genius in an area lies within thise few people who are born with a natural ability for it.

      It was a little pretentious for sure. But the point still remains. It seems the smartest people usually gravitate to one of two extremes. They either have a massive ego or they are the quietest in the room. Think about the quiet ones for a moment.
      If you are very smart it seems self serving to hide your true potential while you navigate through life as you see fit because people will expect less of you and be more forgiving. I think lots of people behave in such way.

      All you need is good functioning brain. Knowledge is something we acquire in order to produce something out of it. Unless you are going to argue that someone can learn things like math and a language without being taught- like knowing someone's name before being told what it is.
      Genius or not the brain must be fed information. Therefore, anyone can achieve great accomplishments with enough hard work. Surely, someone born with a higher mental capacity may learn at a faster rate but that is no guarantee of greatness.

      Your problem is that you think test taking and IQ defines "genius." Greatness can be defined in many ways. While some might become mathematicians some might decide to become artists or an athlete.
      Maybe you should stop eating the garbage you are fed by society and start thinking for your self for once in your life.
      No amount of talent will lead to what you define as "genius" without hard work and not everyone needs to be a "genius" as you define it. Perhaps, if you stop measuring people and actually got to know those you come in contact with you will find people are a lot smarter than you think.

    I disagree. The human mind is capable of everything. Greatness is a combination of long term focus and effort, talent is merely a bonus. Einstien was not born a genius he focused on one thought experiment for 10 years while constantly honing his mental muscles. Same with mozart he was so good at 10 years old because he was obssesed with the piano at age 2. He got really good at age 16. Ben franklin, tesla, all the greats got that way through obessive focus and effort over long periods of time.
    Read mastery by robert greene it goes in depth on the subject.

      a genius also wouldn't say some overly dramatic, vapid statement like "the middle is the safest place". Safe from what lol? That's the problem of trying to portray a genius. He can only be as smart as the person portraying him and if that person isn't very smart then the "genius" isn't going to be either.

    • @tim3198
      @tim3198 7 лет назад +7

      joe shmo Completely overlooked that because Brie Larson is so talented an actress, she can make the most out of what she is given. Whoever directed or wrote this script clearly admires Aaron Sorkin because its so preachy and desperate to make this scene iconic, it does the opposite; it feels so forced

    • @JackDaniels-sh5fl
      @JackDaniels-sh5fl 7 лет назад +9

      It's not even that hard to understand and you still don't get it, so let me elaborate. What the whole scene is about is what is the stumbling block of many exceedingly talented people (here referred as a "genius"). They hide in the mass because that's the safest place from really truly applying yourself, putting yourself in the line and being ready to fail. The "sitting in the front row" is a scary place to be, because you are under the spotlight and failure would be embarrassing. Hence the "safest" spot is in the middle. The "middle is the safest place" isn't to be taken for what it is, but what is the meaning behind it.

    • @alexanderthomas6862
      @alexanderthomas6862 7 лет назад +6

      Wahlberg wasn't the problem, the writing was the problem. It came off as so incredibly shallow, pretentious and psuedo-intellectual. This scene was poorly written just like the rest of the movie, it's not deep, it's not hard to understand jack why you're writing a paragraph explaining the obvious I don't know, this is the kind of thing a 14 year old would find deep. Every scene in this movie was written with an air of self-importance and faux gravitas that just isn't there. The professor character and brie larson's character in the gambler are just a shallow facade of intelligence written by someone who seems relatively dull, has a huge ego and a lack of maturity.

    Talent and hard work are seperate entities but if one has talent and yet strives with hardwork like they have no talent that is what makes a genius... while one can work tirelessly with their heart and soul but if they lack the spark that makes a flame they can just sit in the rain and rub two sticks together at best... talent is essential for genius... do not fool yourselves into thinking with hard work one can be a genius... and talent alone will not make you a person worth remembering in time you need both to become someone time will remember....

      In a sense~.
      A talented person who puts as much hard work as a regular non-talented individual will always thrive; perform better - be better.
      That is the point of this scene.
      Hard work will get you pretty far. But you will still be nothing compared to a person who simply has a gift for the same thing and puts in just as much work as you; or even if he puts less work than you, chances are he will still perform better.

    That is just the thing i've been thinking about a lot lately. Each and everyone of us in the comment section of this video can be a writer. We all have the ability to string a couple sentences together on a piece of paper and call is a poem or a short story. But a fundamental factor that sets the good from the best, is creativity. If you don't have creativity, you have no hopes of writing a story.

      With out a doubt you'll struggle more than someone who has a keen ability for problem solving or a being who possess a creative mind but that won't stop you from realising your dream if you want it bad enough, people crush dreams and the first person in that line is your self.

There's no denying that einstein was a genius because he proved it with facts, but I personally don't see Jackson Pollock as an artistic genius while many others do. He was a man who started a movement by dripping paint on a canvas instinctively and most people don't even like it. Yet his paintings sell for hundreds of millions.

    Agree and Disagree
    Michael Jordan became Michael Jordan because he practiced and did everything he could to be who he was and is today.
    Albert Einstein didn't become Einstein overnight and knew that 2+2=4.He became Einstein by discovering, and working harder at his craft.
    You don't become a genius by being born it, you become one by doing what's necessary to attain that level of skill.
    That's where I disagree.
    Saying all of that, not everybody can just work hard to be Michael Jordan, Einstein, or Jay Z. That's just the reality of it. You can however be the best you and give the world whatever you have to give. So that's where I agree
    I think you'll never know unless you try.You can't say you'll be a genius at writing and not work at it.You need to know yourself and what skills you bring to the table.You must know your strengths and weaknesses before you can say you'll be success or failure at a certain field.

      Michael Jordan was Michael Jordan because he was 6'6", had crazy athletic ability, high basketball IQ, and he grinded ON TOP OF THAT.
      Albert Einstein's IQ is judged to have been in the 160-190 bracket. He also grinded on top of his EXTREMELY SIGNIFICANT GENETIC ADVANTAGE.
      Perfect practice + perfect genes + perfect environmental stimuli make perfect.

    To be in the top 0.1% of the world in any competitive area, you have to first and foremost be a genius with pure luck giving talent in that area. Then you match it with unrelenting discipline, dedication and hard work.
    An average and even a well above average person can hard work at something for 16 hours a day, every day for decades and still not even get close to someone who has pure luck giving talent in that area and then dedicates themself in the same way.

    Of course in a 150 student sized class, the teacher would single one pupil out and indirectly chastise the rest for lack of ingenuity. The mental markings of a truly great preceptor... LOL.
