Hi Brad, I remember when I was young, there was a huge orchid house that watered the plants with a misting system daily, and never had any plants with root root. Can't remember how long they ran each day, but pretty sure they didn't soak the pots through & through. Maybe wet the top few inches, and of course had a bank of large fans running 24-7. This was in South Florida.
I think it was for like 30 minutes a day, maybe less. Maybe you might have an idea on how long to set the timer for the same results.
They also had an injection system to deliver nutrients through the misting system every week, so all there was left to do was repotting, packing and shipping. The greenhouse was 2 city blocks, so this misting system cut down a lot of work. Do you have an educated guess on how long to set the timers for?
I use this exact mist system, though mine is not as automated as yours. I use a yard works water timer attached before the intake of the mist hose. It only works on an hourly basis, which is the weakness of my system. Watch out if you handle the drain valve. Somehow I dropped a piece of it and have yet to find it in on my greenhouse floor. The nozzles clog with my well water but I just soak them in vinegar for a time. This system has the finest mist output of any nozzles available. You will love the results.
Great system. Here in Bakersfield CA, the temp's are climbing into high 90s so fogging system can't keep up. I have a misting system that goes on during hottest part of day and an evaporative cooler that is on from 10am to around 7pm. Believe it or not, orchids seem to be thriving. Did I mention that there is shade cloth on my greenhouse. Like you, I am constantly tweaking.
Do you find the brass heads clogging often, no mist but straight shootout.
Did you use hard water for Nepenthes? If not, then maybe you have a water collection tank and water pump. Can you show your water pump set up?
WOW Brad, How am I just seeing this video now? I like this set up.. If I ever get a grow tent for my basement I might try this.. I have a mist attachment for the hose that I use outside.. I think it's also by orbits.
Hey! I had saw where you used a 24hr toner and a periodic timer for your misters. I have my misters hooked up to a periodic timer plugged into a 24hr timer do they only come on for 10sec off 10 min etc from 10am-5pm HOWEVER I have them connected to my humidity controller and when it turns off the 24hr timer stops so it’s not working properly. Do you have any advice for my misting system coming on with my humidifiers?
How big are the holes? 0.01mm? and do you use any pressure pump? I mean the mist that you see at the beginning on the left Thank you
Lets connect a big electric transformer from a microwave, and maybe the solenoid will work better, and be sure to store them both inside the greenhouse with the misters. LOL Love it.
My Experience and yet years later it is still working great, because you have a clue. Come over to my Facebook page where it is less Anonymous, we can chat about it. You can fill me in
My Experience your winter Christmas light display must be awesome! All that water and electricity... outside! Haha
Nice system!!! I'm planning an evaporative cooler and will have to see how my humidity is with that but that looks like a terrific system for in a greenhouse.
I think the electronics should be outside the greenhouse in an enclosed unit. Perhaps find a better power adapter for that solenoid also, you should easily find one with perfect specs on amazon/ebay. Also instead of feeding the run-off from the misting system outside, why not feed feed the excess water into your mist chamber? I'm sure you could rig a device that diverts the water elsewhere when the mist chamber is full of water. This way you waste less water, perhaps you can run the excess water outside into a barrel to water other plants around the yard etc.
i was going to suggest directing it back to the tank as well
Nice set up. I have also made a small greenhouse and have set up an ultrasonic mist maker with a fan in it. But I don't see cooling. i have a very small vent at top. Do you have vents open while foggers and misters are working? Do you use exhaust fans to bring outside air into your greenhouse because I notice that when i close all vents then humidity in my greenhouse rises to 90 % in just a few minutes and then the temperature starts increasing and running mister afterwards doesn't evaporate and make plants wet.
I dont think you quite understand wattage. When matching components make sure that they are the same type wither A/C or DC and also make sure that they are the same voltage. Watts will not matter as it is only the electrical load.
Was just about to make that same comment!
A couple of questions - why a mister and a foggier. To me, a mister is for watering seed beds or pots. The fogged is for humidity but you seem to be doing both for humidity. The other item, with all those electric outlets etc, and all that water and wet floor, you do have a gfci right? I’m going to go back and see if you have a in-depth one for your foggier. Good video. I know nothing about electrical except it and water are not safe without a GFCI.
what fogger or humidifier are you using
Could you tell us more about the filter you're using? Our tap water here in San Diego has TDS of 500 ppm, far more than the suggested 150 ppm for nepenthes. I've created a similar system which uses water pressure from the hose, but am worried about salts and mineral buildup. The other option would be a pump driven system, which will take some effort.
Love your videos, keep up the good work!
Chad Larrieu sorry Chad no filter needed here. we have about 20ppm in our water.
Wow, lucky you!
for water at 500 tds i use spectrapure 180 gallons per day ro/di for my carnivours ...now this system on a water pump from 0 tds water would be the bomb
Got mine up! now I just need to buy one of those timers but there like 70 bucks so I'll have to wait a little bit ;}
The solenoid uses 24 volts, not watts, other than that, neat setup

I'd love to install a system like this for my indoor setup. But the water here is just too hard. Know anything about hooking up an RO system to it?
Thank you so much for this video! I think this answers the question I made on the recent dracula orchid video. However, did you change the valves at any points? I thought I saw you posting a video where you change the valve and it came out as fog insead of mist?
Great video, very informative. Problem, tho, with your discussion about the electrical power supply. You talk about watts, and about matching the watts. This is potentially dangerous. Please tell us, in addition to wattage, what VOLTAGE your equipment needs, and what VOLTAGE your transformer provides. Without that information, one might burn out the equpment, or the equipment would fail to work.
Aside from this, great work! Thanks!
dide ive been sitting here trying to find a dig710p timer no one has them.. then i find this video n holyshit problems solved! how do i wire the transformer?
Auto-drain valve completely useless and pointless to the misting system. When system is on it just sprays a jet of water all over the place.
It's really scary seeing you teach people how to wire a solenoid like that when you have no understanding of wattage and voltage. Please consult an electrician and fix this video, so you don't kill someone.
24volts DC, not watts!!
Not DC,!!!! AC. Only AC will flow through a transformer.
