Dude, copying other artists is a normal practice to learn. It's actually what you're SUPPOSED to do. Just like you don't learn an instrument by composing your own songs. I discovered this recently and I feel so mad for thinking I shouldn't do it for YEARS. So don't apologize. It's called a study (and not a copy) and every good artists do it
yes!!! I heard the quote, "you have to imitate before you can innovate" recently~ I think this to myself allllll the time now and it helps me so much with insecure feelings about my artistic journey 💖
Oh, for sure. Same reason reading broadly helps you learn to write better! Learning by example and seeing what you like in others' work are huge in improving your own.
Also, emulation is what they taught me to do in my sketchbooks in art school, so no finger wagging should make you feel bad for a normal and healthy art practice. haha!
that's what i'm sayin!!! i know it's a good and normal practice, but folks have gotten on me about it in previous sketchbook tours so i wanted to put a disclaimer this time hahah
Okay but that "shortcomings in the recreation of their style is the strength of your own style" is life changing! It's also interesting to look at artists whose work you like but is stylistically very different from your own, like... I love how expressive your work is and it's something I'm struggling to find in my own work. May be doing a few little recreations of my own ;)
Perhaps a youtube comment isn’t always the best place to share intimate details, but I just want you to know your content, your art, listening to your voice and talking abt mental health and getting older and all the things, is so soothing + comforting to me. My partner and I are about to move to Las Vegas from the east coast (in two days!!) and I’m thrilled to be moving. But of course, moves are stressful + annoying + all the things. I have some last minute work to do before we leave and felt no energy to get out of bed - depressive spell slapped me in the face all over again. I’d missed this video so I turned it on, started working on things, fed myself food, made some coffee, and watched my mood climb out of heaviness. All of this to say, when come the days you feel imposter syndrome or worried no one really cares, a gal in Atlanta->Vegas appreciates + respects your art more than you know
Emulation is sooo important to figure out your own style. Love that you keep explaining that. 🙏☺️ Also I'm very glad that you offer physical rewards on Patreon. 🥰
No finger wagging here! Imo that's one of the best ways to learn. It's how I taught myself growing up and still teach myself. Love your work and sketchbook! Late happy birthday and have a great day!
i'm 32 this year, inshaAllah :) and i'm glad that i found your channel. i like your drawing, unintentionally you motivate me to draw again, and i like your chatty vlog so i can improve my english and also i like your music on the video coz it makes me feel relax. Watching our video make me sane while being a working mom. Thank u!
that sketchbook started on my birthday! feels like such an honor 😊 also, vlogging seems really tough. so thanks for all the effort you put into this vid, cheyenne. ✨
Great vlog! Those stamps are super cute!! I love seeing the behind the scenes of your work and your packing and sorting through your work for customers💞
I love to see artists learning from other artists. I don't sketch, but I write, and I think my writing is always best after I've been inspired by/gotten deep into the flow of another writer I admire. I love your advice about how the differences in our art style is where our strengths lie. Such an awesome and comforting message
i’m halfway through the video but all the pointy hats in your art made me think that maybe you would really enjoy the manga witch hat atelier!! the art is so wonderful i recommend it a lot🧙🏼♀️✨
i loved this video and your sketchbook is such a joy! it's lovely to see that you've really found a way of 'sketchbooking' that works for you and that makes you love the progress. i feel like i can tell from this video that with this sketchbook you've created something you're very fond of, regardless of things being perfect or whatever. it's very exciting and inspiring to see something like that, something where the creating part was more important (and the main source of the enjoyment) rather than its 'presentability'. it really is a joy.
Did anyone else have dejavu when she started her sketchbook tour? Cause it immediately teleported me to the first sketchbook tour video she did and that makes me so happy! 🥰
Loved the sketchbook tour. I've honestly been in a drawing rut for such a long time now between work and being a dog mom, but videos like these are so encouraging to watch. Your art is adorable and it's great you do studies of other artists in your sketchbook too! We should all keep learning and improving on ourselves. Much love 💕
really appreciated this lil vid today, my chronic illnesses are flaring and i've been in pain all day but this was a nice little brain break for me, also love you bunches and happy belated birthday 💕
First and foremost, those guillotine earrings, amaaaaaazing! Second, studying other artists’ work and styles is practice. We all do it, and I’m happy you made a point to talk about “How to Steal Like an Artist” by Austin Kleon. Great quick read with so many spot on points!
"I have all the songs from inside stuck in my head and I'm worried it might not actually be good for me." yep. Yes. uh-huh. Cheyenne you are too relatable, please continue.
This is the first time I've come across your channel, and I just wanna say I love how you overlap your drawings and take up every possible part of the page, they work very well together and feel very organic to me. I tend to have a lot of empty space between my sketches so this has made me want to work on that!
Thank you so much for showing that you also study other artists. I learned that this was the way to learn and grow (of course, not passing it off as your own) and it became stigmatized. It makes sense because there is alot of art theft on the internet. But not everyone is trying to steal art. Putting the @handle is a good idea
@15:18 If you modpodge the paper before you use it you can paint on it with acrylics and gouache without it buckling and warping!! I have a VERY cheap sketchbook that I do this in and it works wonders!
I absolutely love the bit where you show yourself drawing at the beginning !! (I just started the video lol) I’ve been trying to draw in pen too and it’s so hard but I love how you make is look so easy and adorable !! ✨✨
You should consider doing children's book illustration! Your style is so whimsical, fun, and joyful! It's perfect!! (I should know... I studied children's books and literature in college and I have a large collection of picture books that no adult without children should boast, lol!)
I already see how much your art is improved! Really enjoyed watching this vlog! It's always great to explore and improve your skills through other artists work as long as you don't copy it.
So happy with this new vid! I hope you’re doing okay, safe, healthy, and happy! Because, you’re making me happy. I love you Chey! And Connor! And Sophie! 💚💚💚
Wow, i felt the “hands are hard for no reason” thing... i love your sketchbook, trying to figure out how to use mine. I burned myself out and my brain has redefined what a sketchbook is that i have to redefine it again to keep using it lol
Now that I know how tedious vlogs are to edit, your vlogs BLOW my mind :0 seriously amazing, especially since they're long too! Going to play around in my sketchbook while watching this one today
I love the way you draw breath of the wild Link in particular, he just looks so soft and windswept. I have daydreamed about a Princess Zelda print from botw in your style and now I'm rethinking my choice of character, haha
my dude i love this so much, the drawings, the lovely voiceover that isnt too much, the gender neutral pronouns for all the artists you talk about... i could go on! i keep pausing to just absorb everything. this gives me so much motivation to just go and draw! :)
hey, i’m not sure if this is a rude question or something you shouldn’t ask but where do you order your art prints and stickers from? i know a lot of artists don’t like to talk about or share where they get there prints from, so just curious. i’m wanting to start an etsy shop of my art prints :) thank you!
not a rude question at all!! i change up my manu's a fair bit, but i'm ordering my patreon stickers from Sticker Ninja and the postcard prints from Moo !! i would also recommend CatPrint for art prints (never been disappointed w them), and StickerApp for stickers!! I use them for my clear stickers/sticker sheets :-)
Hey there Cheyennne! I love your videos, and have a quick recomendation for you. 😄 One of my favorite teas is actuallly strawberry, I think you'd like it. I put a single spoonful of sugar, and since it's a fruit tea milk doesn't taste the best in it. Have an amazing day, love your stamps you showed at the begining! :')

Love love love you and your vlogs! Love the earrings, love your clothing style, and I love your art style. I emulate the style of those I love all the time also so don’t feel bad about it!

Ahh! I love your sketchbook! I'm the same and I copy a lot of artists whose style I really like to figure out what I like about their work and translate that to my own style. I love your sketchbook! I'm trying to be less perfectionist about my own, but with only a few pages left I think I'm really going to get as rough as I like on the next one! thanks for the cozy sketchy vibes Cheyenne
i got my second dose yesterday so i was feeling nauseous and this video calmed me down and I don't feel as nauseous :) i don't know how that works but ty!
This is so lovely! I wanted to tattoo every single one of your drawings while watching this video because they emulate such a calming and cute feeling and I love it so much! Have you ever watched Summer Camp Island? I feel as if it would be right up your alley :)
I turned 26 two days ago, and it's so weird to think that in 4 years I'll be 30. Like. I don't know. Maybe 16 y/o me didn't see myself living long enough to hit 26. But I just, I don't know. It makes me kind of sad, but happy.
I can relate, you’re not alone! I had a similar situation with graduating college last month when I never thought about what I was like outside of school and not having to go to class in August.

When i was 12 i thought copying peoples art was cheating somehow because you didnt actually come up with it 💀😔🖐️
Learning to play a new instrument is such a good comparison!
Also, emulation is what they taught me to do in my sketchbooks in art school, so no finger wagging should make you feel bad for a normal and healthy art practice. haha!

cheyenne: this is my whatever sketchbook
me: the perfection, the beauty, the inspiration, my uwus are immeasurable
One of these rough sketchy pages with the overlap of two colours would be a STUNNNNNNNNING print. I can picture it on my wall :)
SO FUN! Thank you for the tour :-) love the way your doodles look together and the way you compose them over the two pages !!

Her style is very consistent which I’m super jealous of! Mine always look like 30 different people created them. 🥺
it always blows my mind how much effort you put into your brand and how crisp and well-edited your videos are :0

MY FAV PEN IS ALSO THE PILOT G2 0.38. it is literally p e r f e c t i o n
