Thank you for making this video. I'm positive a lot of us sword fans are very interested in the difference between pre windlass and current BA products.

I have the old one, which is actually the second generation, since the first generation was all factory seconds. I have a factory seconds of the 12th century arming sword,,, it's pretty bad, but pretty good for all of that. It's got a twist, so edge alignment is whacky, and it's temper means that the edge retention is not very good,,, but instead it holds a rough file edge perfectly fine and for a sword, that seems to work well for things like bottles. (its sharp, but hideous, and rough, the edge I put is like 80 grit or so, any finer is a no go). anyway the twisted blade doesn't flop much, which must be why they did that,, and then the longsword (as in your review) is much floppier,, for a sensation , , but I don't actually feel like it's a problem Also,, that sword is better for edge retention than any of my windlass swords,, it came sharpened by KOA and unlike others tales, mine was really sharp, cuts really nicely, makes beautiful clean slices, and hasn't felt like it's dulling yet. Also, I can tell the construction is durable, and the handle feels really nice,,,, so although I'm not a swordsman, and can't attest to how the vibration affects form and agility,, for the things I can experience, it just seems to force edge alignment and as long as your edge is aligned it's efficient to move around. I am one of the ones who is actually very happy with the old version, even so much that I am a little disappointed that they went with windlass,,, because windlass just makes all of the budget swords now, and we could have seen some new makers get some skills and make good swords. I don't know who hilted my swords,, but the handles are really good, better than all of my windlass handles, they feel stout, they look good, it's a shame they won't have the opportunity to grow.

How do you tell the difference between the old one and the new one on KOA's website? The pics they have up right now are clearly the old style pommel. Are they still selling the old model?

It's the new model. It has the yellow curtain background right? you'll see the old model had a blue curtain background. Scroll through the video around the 12:00 mark and you'll see the old model pic with the blue background. The main difference is the pommel types both are wheel pommels but the old has a Type H pommel and the new one has a Type I.

So Windlass is making the new Valur Arms swords?
    Interesting but strange

    • @DynamoSwordChannel

Yea, KultofAthena posted some info on the deal a few months back when these new models were revealed to be in production. Basically Balaur Arms is the "house brand" of medieval swords for KultofAthena but since they are not a forge or manufacturer they contract out their designs to other forges. The orginal forge used was named OTC or was a forge under OTC. The were basically fired for offering poor heat treatment as well as lying about the steel grade of the original models (was supposed to 5160 but were really 1550). So KoA contracted to Windlass to make Balaur Arms model swords. Seem to be a good deal as the new model is much more impressive than the older ones. I also have a new Teutonic Arming Sword I will be reviewing and posting by next week.

@@DynamoSwordChannel awesome on the new sword next week!
As far as the Balaur Arms swords I knew most of what you wrote I just didn't know that Windlass was the company they went with for the new stuff. I remember people being upset at the BS with the older swords & that KoA was looking for a new manufacturer.
It's interesting how Windlass has made swords for Cold Steel, now Balaur Arms and presumably some other companies...yet there are differences between them all that make them not just re-branded Windlass swords.
I'm not sure whoakes the Balaur Arms scabbards as Windlass tends to only issue non cored leather & BA still seems to use wood cores.
Since I've owned many Windlass products, starting in 1995, I've seen them go from crowbars in weight to fishing rods in flexability to really getting quality more consistent & good. It's a good time now for companies to be putting out good product as the demand for low & mid tier, well made, fairly accurate, well balance & durable swords is higher now than ever

As far as I know Windlass is making the wood core scabbards. The majority of their swords come with the standard leather scabbards but there are quite a few that do have wood core scabbards such as both their Gladius, Hoplite, a few of their Vikings and I remember their discontinued Type XVIIIa sword all had or have wood core scabbards. I think it's just been a norm and probably more cost effective for then to do the leather scabbards. I hope to see more with wood core though but wouldn't really expect them to. Also after some recent fact checking turns out Windlass doesn't make Cold Steel Swords anymore though they did in the past.

      @asa-punkatsouthvinland7145 2 года назад +1

@@DynamoSwordChannel true Windlass does wood core, but their style is often quite different from the BA ones...but it's true they still could be making them.
Regardless I agree more wood core scabbards would be a good thing indeed; even if they are not 100% accurate it's still better than leather only

Yea these sword are made to KultofAthena's specs so there's really no similarities between them regarding the designs they're uniquely Balaur Arms Swords. I think a lot of people might compare them and wonder why Windlass doesn't make their swords like these since they do have a more crisp design than most of their other stock models. There's also another contract between Windlass and the Royal Armouries of England that will feature swords in their collection made to spec but made by Windlass. Matt Easton is collaborating in this venture as well and has info on his channel about these new swords. They look very "Balaur Arms'ish" in my opinion though.

OUTSTANDING! What a professional review. I can see you put time into this.
My impressions mirror yours. The new generation Windlass versions are better than the older ones. Which is pretty surprising. Because the old version was the best value to be had at the time. I think these are now the best value to be had.
I have 5 or 6 Balaur Arms models, and the new generation 14C Longword is my latest. It's incredible. I'll not be selling it. I'll be adding more models.
