So about a week ago i was visiting the cornell campus and naturally i stopped by barton hall. i'd been there before, but this time i just opened the door and there were three other people in the entire building. I stood there in the middle of the gym floor playing this exact "brown eyed" on my iPod, imagining myself looking at the boys on stage surrounded by roadies and ivy league kids over 30 years before.
+Gregory Andrew I agree with you wholeheartedly brother. Jerry and the boys were on this night. There's speculation that this night was so powerful that they dont even remember it even happening lol. And this particular version of brown eyed woman is the best and jerrys solo makes me jizz out my ears everytime.
I finally managed to graduate from Cornell in 5/77 although I was class of '75 - and this was the last event I attended before I left. It was such a memorable concert because it was so clear and pristine - the acoustics were the best Barton Hall ever produced.
Always thought this had some of the Dead's best lyrics - 'Gone are the days when the ladies said please, Gently Jack Jones won't you come to me" "I cut hickory just to fire the still, Drink down that bottle and you're ready to kill', '1930 when the wall caved in', etc
Only thing there is to say to the thumbs down gang: you do not and will not get it re: The Grateful Dead. Perhaps this is the iconic live version of "Brown Eyed Women." The group performance is as on target as ever they could be. Jerry's solo alone contains a handful of spine tingling moments. Clapton once said that whole songs exist and may be justified for one single note; the one minute riff has has several notes which Clapton would believe fit that status. LISTEN. If you still don't like it, pease move on quietly.
A golden rule for me through life is if you want to tell if somebody has a basic human soul ask them how they feel of the Grateful Dead. Statistically 20 out of 813 (downs vs ups at the present) would be true with the percentage of unemphatic psychopaths in the world who couldn't comprehend the emotional chills from a Jerry riff.
+Rhett Drissel I know this show is known to be one of the best GD shows ever... everytime i listen to it i always think "good god Lesh is a machine in this show."
saw them a few weeks after this show for the first time in lakeland,fl. thank you so much for just another amazing memory. closed my eyes through this and was on the floor of the center with an amazingly beautiful girl in a lace dress, dancing. never got her name, ah well. thanks again.
Top 10 for sure... but I think I can name 5 that I like better... Brokedown Palace Black Peter Ripple China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider Eyes of the World
so insanely tight! the best band on the planet at their best in my humble opinion. Barton Hall '77 = aaaaammmmmaaaaazzzzziiiiinnnnggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!! forever grateful, forever dead. long live the tunes, the vibes, the memories, the love.
For me, with everything the Dead and Jerry have done that been out of this world, this is my absolute favorite recording. Jerry's playing has a bounce on this that I've never quite heard anywhere from anyone. I can listen over and over and over....
Everyone's giving love to Jerry; rightfully so. But are we not going to talk about Phil Lesh?!? This man is a fucking ANIMAL throughout the entire song
This is probably my favorite Jerry song and I've been casually looking for the quintessential recording of it for years. This might be it. This is snappy and young and it suites this particular song very well.
My grandfather played football at Cornell and my daughter ran track at Brown, and the Ivy League Indoor Championships (Heps) were held one year at Barton Hall (and my wife and I were there). AND, I'm a huge GD fan. Because of all this, I've always felt a special connection to this show...
i'm sooo hooked on the guitar solo in this. its like monumental. and i was born while it was playin!! !! if theres a better version of this song, one of you hippies better declare it, and put it to the test HERE!!!
This may be a tad too fast, but this is probably one of the things that makes this the best version of this song ever - in my opinion, mind ya. Jerry's on fire, everything sounds perfect, so much enegery in this performance, driving forwards all the time. This is pure magic!
I love this rendition, but I think the BEW from Capitol Theater in April is even better... the solo, at least. Everyone talks about May '77, and with good reason, but much of the year was good to them. The Dead didn't really have hot months as much as hot tours (e.g., Spring, 1990), because, generally, on a given tour, everything was falling into place-- limited drug use, good locations with the right audiences, even the crew having their shit together, etc.-- or it wasn't. It didn't take much to throw the Dead off their game, because there was a lot that could go right or wrong, and it was a delicate balancing act. Things were going great for them on this night, and this BEW is testament to that fact.
Jerry's voice has such a happy soulful innocence. It's a voice you couldn't ever imagine saying something mean. I mean every time he says "sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down" sounds so innocent. 0:43
i wish every dead fan could hear this version. my husband handed me a cd with this a few days ago. wow..love the speed too. i have noticed that during many shows they switch up the speed. At one show they slowed down friend of the devil and i was so high it freaked me out! hahahaaa i thought i was the only one hearing it slow...i had to talk myself down HAAA :D glad i don't smoke anymore
Thanks SOOO much for posting this, man. Between 1975-1979, I saw The Grateful Dead in concert about 25 times. Best times of my life. This is NOTHING like a Grateful Dead concert! And, I don't care what anybody says, I loved Donna! So what if she was off-key sometimes. She was a classy and beautiful hippie chick with a warm vibe and amazing smile. Keith was a lucky guy. Pigpen, Brent, Jerry ... sigh, God bless them. Peace & Joy ... Fan of Janis
I love blue grass 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😁😁😁😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💙❤💚💛💜😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Great version for sure, but I'll always favor Europe 72's take over all others, and that's due to the vocal. Can't stand how Jerry, on all other versions, always went UP on, for example, "DAYS," "thunDER," "whisKEY," etc. It's jarring and I don't know why he thought that was a good idea. The Europe '72 vocal is so sweet, controlled, and inviting (granted, it was overdubbed).
@Hashjihadful wow i gotta hear that. didn't know that, thats cool. this has to always remain my favorite as it was played the night i was born though ;o)
@OriginalRitz - well, imo they were peaking in 1977, continously... the band had jelled together, the harmonies were working, Jerry was in a great mood, the whole band was on fire. Check out some of the other selections from 1977 that i uploaded, they created this magic over and over again, right up to their trip to Egypt in autumn 1978. Sadly things took a darker turn in 1979, with Keith and Donna eventually leaviing...
Gone are the days..
I’m sure you are here for the amazing solo!
This is the quintessential live recording of this song.
That extended solo when Jerry misses the cue for verse 3... ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
@@SPINUNDRUM YESSSSSSSS.... level 2 i call it....
I always have found Europe 72 to be the quintessential recording, but I love how fast this is on the guitar and drums
So about a week ago i was visiting the cornell campus and naturally i stopped by barton hall. i'd been there before, but this time i just opened the door and there were three other people in the entire building. Life is Circular
i’d do anything to do that lol
@@alicelovell3905 may the circle be unbroken
That's awesome
Hands down tightest version of this song in my opinion. That whole spring 77 tour the whole band was on top of their game
How bout them birds fly eagles fly
in my humble opinion this version contains the best jerry solo ive ever heard
+Gregory Andrew Well that's just like..your opinion mannn
+Gregory Andrew The dude Abides.
Second that emotion from Fillmore 1971 or sugaree from the dead movie or about 37 other solos
It's close
This is gold. They sound so tight and Jerry is in the zone.
5/8/77 is my birth date. They must have been playing this when I was born because every time I here it I feel gravity get a little stronger!
sweet
Love it!!
Happy birthday!
I finally managed to graduate from Cornell in 5/77 although I was class of '75 - and this was the last event I attended before I left. It was such a memorable concert because it was so clear and pristine - the acoustics were the best Barton Hall ever produced.
That’s so cool!!
What a time to be a alive. I graduated in 5/07. And here we are brother. Some people get it and some just never will. God bless ✌️👊
17 people were looking at their screens upside down. Thats the only reason I can think of for hitting the thumbs down for this song.
Too much redeye?
nosam bawhcs how dare you..
Let us just call those folks unaware.
I never understood why anyone dislikes video...just don't watch the video lol
bahaaaaaaaa good one!
Always thought this had some of the Dead's best lyrics - 'Gone are the days when the ladies said please, Gently Jack Jones won't you come to me" "I cut hickory just to fire the still, Drink down that bottle and you're ready to kill', '1930 when the wall caved in', etc
Agreed
jerrys solo...hits me hard dude.
+Xavier McCants it's my favorite live solo of any dead song ever. Check out brown eyed woman 5/28/77. Solo is delicious as well brother!!
+Jerry garcia thank youu brother bouta get on that right now
Tears man... it’s unreal
Stunning he smashed it

Ah they're just too drunk to know which end's up!
Jamie Wilson i agree. and what about the future?
Yup. In the FUTURE THE GRATEFUL DEAD will alter human history.
alter human history? one can only hope so
Jerry's on fire for this one.
Fire ain't nearly as hot as Jerry was on this night
Today and forever my favorite piece by the Dead. Great images of Americana.
This version is my fav, Phil kills it with his bass
+Rhett Drissel I know this show is known to be one of the best GD shows ever... everytime i listen to it i always think "good god Lesh is a machine in this show."
2:15 chills every time.

Greatest Dead song.
Top 10 for sure... but I think I can name 5 that I like better...
Brokedown Palace
Black Peter
Ripple
China Cat Sunflower -> I Know You Rider
Eyes of the World
Let there be songs to fill the air!!!!
21 years gone, hard to believe!
@fullerjohn1119 You witnessed history. How lucky you are. Jerry and Donna were so fantastic in this show. I love it so much!
The speed is just fine to me. What an intro and solo, eh?
+Rotcod first time i listened to this show and heard the intro it hit me like a ton of bricks! i just thought "WOW"
wow Phil is the coolest nerd ever that bass sound is the $%$# so great ...love this version
can hear it great in this version! love it!
Legendary show. I remember getting it on cassette bootleg back in the day. And blasting it in my 1997 Honda Accord.
so insanely tight! the best band on the planet at their best in my humble opinion.
Barton Hall '77 = aaaaammmmmaaaaazzzzziiiiinnnnggggg!!!!!!!!!!!!!
forever grateful, forever dead. long live the tunes, the vibes, the memories, the love.
i'm quite literally crying.. this is so real, so good. thank you so much.
I'll never get over how full, fat and funky Phil's bass is in this show, or how blistering Jerry's solos are, how crystaline clear the vocals....
makes my memories smile , I'm still there
For me, with everything the Dead and Jerry have done that been out of this world, this is my absolute favorite recording.
I was there...simply put....pure magic...also the crowd was very rowdy compared to any other show I've seen...amazing.
This is probably my favorite Jerry song and I've been casually looking for the quintessential recording of it for years. This might be it. This is snappy and young and it suites this particular song very well.

This is why 77 was one of the best years for the boys.
We all know how on fire Jerry was, but I love how high in the mix Weir is on this version. Some of his voicings are beyond what should be.
Absolutely soothingly marvelous. I have needed this for so long. Rock on Jerry and friends.
If you are having a shitty day, put this on . . . it will cure all!
The solo at 1:31 has brought me back maybe 2 times a day for a month or so? yeah.
I did this too lol. Also at 2:31.
This may be a tad too fast, but this is probably one of the things that makes this the best version of this song ever - in my opinion, mind ya. Jerry's on fire, everything sounds perfect, so much enegery in this performance, driving forwards all the time. This is pure magic!
A great song from one of their best shows. The entire show smokes from start to finish.
39 years later and this music is still relevant, cool, flowing and easy. What a band! Grateful for the Dead (pun fully intended)...Ed
To go back in time...For one Show...This is where I would be.
After the first 100 times of listening to Jerry’s solos, Weirs rhythm guitar is just sublime
I think this is my favorite video on all of youtube.
great show thanks for the uplolad
I was there!!!! Mother's Day 1977. It was snowing when the show ended and people were leaving.
Jerry's voice has such a happy soulful innocence. It's a voice you couldn't ever imagine saying something mean. I mean every time he says "sound of the thunder with the rain pourin' down" sounds so innocent. 0:43

Sounds soooo good. Gave me chills. Thank you. Miss you Jerry.
this is one of the best jerry solos i have EVER heard; and i've heard too many.
Absolutely beautiful version.
Thanks for yet another terrific post. My VERY favorite Brown Eyed Women was the very next night. =o)
GD hipsters say 77 wasn't their best year. It's all relative but God Damn soo tight. Fingers on a hand.
Real good stuff 77 a great year! Thanks for the tunes
Grateful Dead ☮ Brown Eyed Women :) QC
@xxxENTxxx - glad you're enjoying these
God Damn! Very tight. Lovely stuff
Yes indeed, this is the bestest of the bestest..........
Love the tempo and love Jerry's guitar tone/solo
Thanks SOOO much for posting this, man. Between 1975-1979, I saw The Grateful Dead in concert about 25 times. Best times of my life. This is NOTHING like a Grateful Dead concert! This was one of the best live concerts, imho.
1:35 This is why i have brought you here today.
fanfreakintastic! thanks for posting!
... yes --- it SNOWED in May!
the kids behind me asked me to stop dancing ---Cornell in '77
5/4 has the better energy and especially the intro is way better- a very emotional song for all of us
77 Dead is fire.
I swear if there was a perfect song to go with a bottle of Bulleit bourbon, a '65 Chevy Corvette, and a Colt .38 revolver this would be it.
I love blue grass 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😁😁😁😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💗💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💞💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💝💙❤💚💛💜😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
@talkingducksrgreat - yeah, this is my favorite Brown Eyed Women

OMG THIS WAS A VEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRY SPEACIAL DAY TO MEEEEEE!! !! !!!
@talkingducksrgreat - like rainbows and sunsets, some things just cannot be explained...
@OriginalRitz
Well , it is a small armory, my wife works next door to Barton, the acoustics are very good and very open. Also, they played very well.
@surfric - that's really cool... yeah, the 5/8 dew is one of the best i've ever heard...
❤️LOVE❤️
@onojmai - i agree, one of the best.
@Hashjihadful wow i gotta hear that. didn't know that, thats cool. this has to always remain my favorite as it was played the night i was born though ;o)
You didn't take a knee, you guys sang great songs
Brown eyed women, luv it
crazy good
can someone please tell me why this is the greatest most soulfull evocative song EVER??!?!?!?
The opening guitar from jerry is heavenly.
@OriginalRitz - well, imo they were peaking in 1977, continously... the band had jelled together, the harmonies were working, Jerry was in a great mood, the whole band was on fire. YES!!!
The version by which all others are judged. Amazing!!!
great solo wow
@MrScottleavitt - absolutely.......!
SOUND STRATOSFERICO !! ECCEZIONALI !!!
The bottle was dusty but the liquor was clean
