Thank you for clarifying this, for me. Because I found this information on a Fanon wiki, I just assumed all this information was made up by fans. But because these fanon wikis also seem to use canonical lore in tandem with lore that they just made up, it's really hard to tell, especially when you're pretty much a noob to this stuff. :P
@Nate Bush I didn't think about using the White Wolf Fandom wiki to get references, because I don't remember reading about these. Now I have page numbers in specific books.
I had an idea for a Yeren game, in that the player group are all Yeren. However, they were actual scientists/security working on the project, believing that they were creating a type of super-soldier for national defense. The Pentex higher ups were happy with the Yeren but were concerned about their extreme ambition, so they secretly charged that a second generation of Yeren get made, this one that isn't so...voracious and avaricious, with the player characters being the main creators and first 'test subjets' of teh rituals to create this second generation Yeren. It works, and the player characters become wereapes. They aren't as greedy and avaricious as normal Yeren, but they don't have the stink of the wyrm either. They soon catch on that they're now guinie pigs, and they escape, where they're lucky enough to be befriended by some Corax who then vouch for them and introduce them to the local Children of Gaia and Bone Gnawers. From there the group goes on a journey of acceptance with the spirit world, finding a spiritual avatar that will make its pact with them, and they become the first in the newest Gaian changing breed: the were-apes, the craftsman of Gaia. They operate in a troop the way werewolves operate in packs, but they're much more attuned to urban areas, they're master craftsman (of fetishes, green tech etc) and excellent businessmen and of understanding the modern world - and how best to fight Pentex and other wyrm machinations. It's an irony that this tool created by Pentex turns out being a huge ally of Gaia against the wyrm.
I have been playing Werewolf since revised edition, the one with the claw marks cut out of the cover. I have never heard of the mockery breeds! This was a great video!
I absolutely love Pentex stuff. The monkey wrench chronicle was pretty good in my eyes. Also I was quite pleased they made it into hunter the redeemer. Will you ever have a look at fonori? Or possible have a retrospective at freak legion?
I took 3 years of Chinese in college and this is what I learned about the Yeren. I leaned it as "Ren Xiong" which is Pinyin for "人熊" (dude you're making me break out my character dictionary here) and I learned it as "man bear" "人" is basically "man" in the sense of humanity. So the literal translation is again, "man bear". However, my Chinese professor said that many read it as "Man-Monkey" even though 熊 means in literal translation to English "bear". What I remember from that folklore class was that, like us English speakers, stories get passed down for generation and we may call something that's the same idea by a different name i.e. Sasquatch being commonly referred as Big Foot. This is probably more than you care to know, but I always found this creature interesting.
Interesting side note, project Lycaon was named for a King in ancient Greek myth that tried to trick Zeus into eating stew made from his youngest son. Zeus wasn't fooled and to punish Lycaon, Zeus turned him into a large ravenous wolf who then killed and ate his remaining sons before being exiled into the wilderness. (There are of course variations but that is the basics of it minus the youngest getting brought back plot) Just interesting I thought because of course Pentex would use the story of such a disgusting, prideful and arrogant man turned into a wolf as the name of a project like this.
after I finished recording ... i realized i f*cked up and i wasnt going to re-record it. so i learned how to do that effect to let people know how bad i did lol.
