Greg it isn't cheap it is using your resources to get the most out of them. We have become such a throw-away society, we need to go back to do what are grandparents and great grandparents did. Use it till nothing is left of it or it is worn out.

Frugal is my word, we lived well and vacationed but we’re not extravagant and at times I know our friends were talking. But we retired 5 yrs ago at 59 and still haven’t collected SS, so I guess we get the last laugh as most folks we know are still working. Just keep on doing what you’re doing and the rewards will come. (Just don’t sacrifice ppe day to day)

I agree with the "being cheap" comment. We live in a society where everything is replaceable instead of reusable. It's "not okay" to not go out and buy new shiny things. People are judged by what they have rather than who they are. I use what I have and I'm proud of it. Do I wish they were nice new shiny things, sure I do but it's not a requirement as a lot of people make it out to be. And it really makes new homesteaders struggle. My chicken coops have all been reused products. A dilapidated shed and now a 1984 30ft camper we started our journey in. My barn is being made from an early 1900's house. The metal I'm using to cover it is coming from a mobile home on the property I'm tearing down. I'm also using what materials I can for the mobile home to fix our house. Nothing wrong with it at all. I live that you use the resources available to you. Id live to save money by milling my own lumber. Its just not available to me. Just think if it like your dozer project. As long as someiis done right it doesn't matter what is used to get it done.

The barn addition project is off to a great start. Take a couple of hours and make a very sturdy work table that you can mount your planer and tablesaw and chop saw to. Make it so you can move it with your tractor and make it with a base that won’t tip over or move when pushing items through the saw. Add on multi plug in points, does not have to be fancy, just practical. Screw down the table saw to the bench. Table saw top should sit at 36 inches, add some hooks for extension cords, air compressor lines to hang on. Use wood for the top as it’s not too slippery. Also make a work platform 4x8 that is skid like that you can pick up with your tractor forks and can work off of at heights. If you’re working by yourself use a ladder to access it after setting at the right height by the tractor. These ideas just make working just so much easier.

Being frugal is a choice. What do I spend my money on? If I spend it on things I can do/make myself there often isnt money to spend on other things. In my life gardening has taught me this lesson. I could go out and buy bags of potting soil and soil amendments, or I can make compost and leaf mold for free. By making free amendments I can buy quality tools that I will have a very long time. Nothing is truly free and making your own takes some time. But when you have lots of free time and little money its smart to spend time.

Two things in the 1920s the first aircraft builders realized that fuel-air mix was shown as rich/poor, it was quickly switched from poor to lean. Because poor implied you had no money, while lean implied that you were frugal. Words matter! Second don,t forget to use the ashes from that fire on your vegetable garden. Carbon is very very useful in a vegetable garden, never mind being fugal you had it there.
As for the homemade sonotube...you are right, plus cutting the damn things does take time too. good luck

you need some of that temporary electric fence and section off that area that Katy was cleaning. Just take them out there everyday while you are working. Goats are great bush cleaners. Cut back a little on the feed and they will be hungry enough to forage and clean it up. Then, what they don't eat, it'll be a lot easier to clean up. Plus, their butt fertilizer will do the orest good, AND it'll keep them off that pretty grass.

This was a great video. Katie, I love how you always have random scenes with all the animals and property at the beginning. Thank you for that. Greg, I agree with your comments and approach to reusing what is there and available to accomplish what you need to do. My dad went through the Great Depression and instilled many of the values learned in me. We have become too much of a disposable and wastful society IMO. I really liked watching you two playing with the goats and their reactions and actions. Greg, you always impress me with your dirt work skills you've developed with the tractor. Nice job with prep work for the build. Kartie, thank you for introducing and you comments on Milanote. I am like you and have difficulty with the visualizing aspect of projects. I am going to play with it and it's likely I'll soon be using it on an upcoming project. Have a great week and I'm excited about the new build starting. Larry, Central Valley, Ca.

If you get some hardware cloth and staple a few inches to the building, and have it bend below ground level and out from the building about 1-2 feet; animals will not know to dig away from the building to get access. They always dig close to the structure that want to get into. If the hardware cloth is a couple of inches underground, you wont catch it with a mower, and plants will have no issue growing on top of it.

the rebar that katie picked up you guys could reuse in any newer footing you do in the future, and tbh being frugal is always better than being 'cheap' it's knowing what you've got at hand and working with it to do things that that might not have been possible in the first place with something that could of cost way more than it needs to.
it's never being cheap but being smart with what you have, and only spending on what you need in the end.
as for preventing critters from getting in, the chicken wire doubled over would probably be the better option for the short depth you wish to go down with.
always fun to watch what you build

Hello Katie and Greg. There is nothing wrong with using what you have. I learned that in Boy Scouts 47 - 53 years ago. It shows that you are smarter. All of the concrete and rebar you two picked up looked like it made it into the holes for the footers with perhaps nothing to bury later. The concrete tubes here are around $18, so there is another few bags of concrete that can be said cost you nothing extra. Great job. Have good days! (I liked the idea about Milanote, I just don't have a project to use it on.)

Frugality = freedom. Our culture sees it completely backwards: frugal = deprivation. When you consider the cost of debt or needless spending on your mental well-being and closing off future opportunities (and future security), celebrating a lifestyle of simplicity and creatively not spending needless money is so wise. Good for you. In the end, it's not how much money you make, but how much you spend. By carefully managing the small expenses, you'll we so much more free in the long-term.
