  • We have TIG filler rod in stock here weldmongerstore.com/collectio...
    TIG cup Kits, TIG Fingers, Gloves, Tungsten, Filler metal, and other quality welding tools. New products being added weekly.
    In this video, I welded with ER70S2, ER70S6 AND ER309 TIG ROD.
    The differences betwwen ER70S-2 AND ER70S-6, are subtle except for open roots or full penetration welds.
    ER309 tig filler rod is great for certain applications.'

    I have used a lot of 309 and 312 for repairs. When you don't know what you've got, no procedure available, but you know it's steel, 309 or 312 are the go to.
    Good stuff as always

Im so profoundly happy there are people like you or Bob Moffatt, you guys tought me to use every single welding process there is,(to the highest standard!!) cutting, gouging, etc. Thanks to you guys, I never struggled financially, I can provide for my family.
    Passed those tests, got the raise as you promised. 😢😢😢😢 Mad respect and thank you agiain,again and again.

    309 really is the magic rod. We had a fresh out of trade school welder certified welder at my job for a short bit and I needed some material (single pass about 3” long on 4 parts) put back on some hardened A2 tool steel fixtures that had worn, it was his only job that day so 4 hours later and he’s still not done I come back and he’s defeated. He was pre-heating in the oven, tried A2 rod, tried hard rod, tried er70-s2 couldn’t get anything to stick or not erupt. I told him try the 309 rod it’ll stick basically anything with iron in it to anything else with iron in it. He had them all welded up in like 10 minutes after that. I’m sure the material properties weren’t great but they only needed to last a little while longer.
    Speaking of which, I wonder how much of a hit you take to tensile strength of the joint when you use 309 over er70-s2.

    Don`t know if you do interviews or podcasts anymore but if you do would be great to have guy called Chris Razor from hi-tech welding on one. He is one of the guys who helped miller develop their welders, knows alot about aluminium welding, especially would be great to hear about copper pipe welding he does etc.

    Used er70 S6 for diverts on conveyors. 100% argon naturally. The factory mig welds would fail after a year in service. The complete pen with er 70 s6 stopped this fatigue failure %100. It is a bit wet but the strength and fatigue / impact resistance makes it unbeatable for repair work. Thanks for the video.

    Jody, I found 309L a savior when welding on old motorcycle frames. Especially near some factory lap joint where the rust and other contaminants love to hide. The 70S wires seem to draw it out and create swiss cheese! The 309 seems to not draw out the rust and contaminants. Every minute you spend grinding is another minute you could have been welding! Besides, unnecessary grinding will only shorten your life! LOL! Don't forget to wear your tig finger! Oh, and cover up, the UV from the arc can cause permanent damage to your skin and may even kill you!

    Hi Jody, Do you have any advice for TIG welding sheet metal with low carbon filler? When grinding and trying to finish working/beating the sheet metal the tig welds seem a LOT harder than when I oxy weld with low carbon filler. I do not get a good finish when tig welding with the low carbon filler.

    Jody, I’m welding .049 sheet metal to larger solid pieces, and I’m wondering if the ER-309 will help me not burn back the material as much, when trying to get a puddle going or if I let it get away from me. I’m welding on firearms that I’m building, so the appearance is important and I want to mitigate the chance of having to do rework as much as possible.
    Thanks for the videos

    • @foxotcw30

      ER308 is a bit stronger and is intended for stainless to stainless welds only. ER309 is suited for mixed materials (i.e. carbon to stainless).

    Have you used the tig button before Jody ? Thinking of getting one as I do a lot of out of position stuff working on aluminum boats and aluminum semi trailers. Thanks

    • @dumpsterdave3710
      @dumpsterdave3710 4 месяца назад +2

      I've used one in my home shop for a few years and love it. Lets you do all sorts of out-of-position stuff easily. The two main challenges are that finding a good position for it to comfortably press can be difficult depending on the joint (I've had my fingertip go numb from pressing it too hard/long in certain situations) and if you have an air-cooled torch it can get hot enough for the adhesive on the button to soften and the rubber nub move around.
      I recently bought a second one as I have an industrial shop with a PrimeWeld 325X and will be using it with that as well.

    • @JCWren

      Is the TIG button you're talking about an on/off switch or like a pedal? Because I was just wondering the other day if anyone made a pedal type button that mounts on the TIG torch.

    • @gazk9424
      @gazk9424 4 месяца назад

      You should have a 2T/4T switch on your weld set. 2T means you have to hold the button, 4T is press once to arc up, then press again to arc off.

    • @dumpsterdave3710
      @dumpsterdave3710 4 месяца назад +2

      2T/4T are significantly simpler than the TIG Button and common with all modern/inverter welders. The TIG Button is pressure-sensitive, mimicking the foot pedal as a finger control. @@gazk9424

  • @thzzzt
    @thzzzt 4 месяца назад +2

    OK, but what is the downside of ER309? The tensile strength is 86K --stronger than both the ER70's. And you get a rust-resistant weld with somewhat less heat input to boot. Why not just use it on all steel? Seems like it would be simpler.

    • @EmptyMag
      @EmptyMag 4 месяца назад +3

      More expensive for a start, plus some welds will never see a load approaching 50,000lbs, much less almost double that. I'm sure there's more reasons especially when metallurgy gets involved, but money is one that's hard to ignore lol.

    • @dimtt2
      @dimtt2 4 месяца назад +4

      It's more expensive, plus if you penetrate through the material thickness (as in butt welding root, or welding thin material) you need to backpurge with argon otherwise the weld deposit will oxidise(sugarcoat) and strength will be significantly compomised

    • @foxotcw30
      @foxotcw30 4 месяца назад +3

      Shielding and cleanliness are more critical with stainless rod. You can't let molten stainless touch oxygen or it will instantly turn into a corroded mess. ER70 is much more tolerant. Also just look at the price. Stainless rod is expensive.

  • @Steelcrafted
    @Steelcrafted 4 месяца назад

    I try to never use s-2 anymore....s-6 wets in so much better and doesn't sag and possibly undercut....also I'll use stainless 308 or 309 over either s2 or s6 even on mild steel, nothing I do is that critical, but stainless rod just welds better....I'll lean on that crutch all day!! Lol 😆😉

    @weldingtipsandtricks love your videos and it's not like you necessarily need this, but it may help just a tiny with viewer engagement if you look at the camera lens when you're speaking. I find that a lot of folks, especially when filming with a phone, look at screen and not the camera. It's understandable though if someone's live streaming and want to see the chat. Keep it coming regardless.
