The way Alan Rickman delivers the "By Grabthar's hammer, what a savings" line towards the beginning of the movie is just so perfect. It kills me every time.

    • @Thegreatequalizer
      @Thegreatequalizer Год назад +3

Its the perfect counter-point to his very genuine delivery later in the film when Quellek is dying. Since it shows how the line has become less than meaningless to his character, only for it to in that later instant become deeply important to him for what it means to somebody else.

There’s a Wikipedia page about The Learning Annex. I remember it from my early 20s when I lived in New York in the 2000s. It was an adult education thing with courses and speakers and stuff. I think Sex & The City referenced it, too, in a few episodes. The Learning Annex felt a bit like a meme before memes existed. 😂 it might have also been more of a New York based thing and sort of an NY in joke.

Galaxy Quest holds a special place in my heart. Not only because it sits alongside one of my favorite movie release years I've experienced in my life but that it also shares an interesting genre I was introduced to with a lot of my other favorite movies coincidentally released that same year: metastorytelling.
Galaxy Quest, The Matrix, Fight Club, and to a slightly lesser degree South Park and Iron Giant all have their titles represented as a concept within their own story leading my pubescent mind to have a revelation of stories about storytelling/ers.
Not a unique genre today but back then it blew my mind that so many movies that fit this metastory genre came out in a single year.
The show galaxy quest within the movie galaxy quest had revealed this story of the power of storytelling and the tribulations of storytelling by team with Tim Allen's character being an analogue to a director that needs to learn to respect the human value of their production team.
The Matrix within the movie The Matrix reveals a meta commentary on the relationship between humanity's biology and psychology with storytelling and how that god-like power of drama is within every living person (observer).
Fight Club the concept within the movie revealing a story of Fincher's feelings towards his own Hollywood storytelling industry.
And Terrence and Phillip being an analogue to, while being within, South Park the movie reveals a story about the creators scathing feelings towards those that believe animation should be shackled to one specific set of values.

34:00 There was a company called The LEarning Annex, but from what i remember a learning annex was like, a convention hall, that was used for regular people, to teach other people how to do everyday things that arent really taught anywhere sort of like a community-community college.
Like, if you wanted to know how to repair your dish washer, you looked to see if any of the places were going to have an in person class.

The way Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen's character) acts in the beginning of the movie is directly inspired by William Shatner in The Original Series, where he was kind of an *checks canadian thesaurus* unpleasant person on set, thinking and acting like the entire show centered around him.
Also you haven't watched Galaxy Quest until you've seen it with entirely Thermian dubbing :P (Yes it exists, iirc on both bluray and dvd releases)
Riley, I'm fairly certain that the ship scraping scene and the impossible physics of it, was intentional, not an oversight :)

I love this movie, it has a kind of magic - there were 1000 ways it could have been cringey or offensive but they manage to just get everything right. Even more amazing when there was so much confusion about what the movie was supposed to me. One of the things that stands out to me is the change of perspective of the cast who are trapped in the viewpoint of they did this little show that was inconsequential and either the outcome for them is a way to maintain fame, or something they are just reliant on for making a buck (or even a sense of shame this is what they are rememebered for, not their art). I remember the story of Nichelle Nichols having quit as Uhura and then being introduced to 'her greatest fan' at a fund raiser - Martin Luther King - who told her she had to stay as what she was doing was so important in what it was showing. There are countless stories of where shows like Star Trek have had a massive impact on people at low points in their lives or have been formative in how they grew up. For me I remember Quantum Leap in this way - it exposed me to so many ideas and thoughts on the world and it's good and it's bad. Anyway, the point being the cast in Galaxy Quest (as many real life genre actors have) came to understand and appreciate what it means to it's audience and that can be a completely different and valid thing beyond what it meant to actually act in the show, and that deserves respect and is something completely different you can appreciate and enjoy with the fandom.

Think you heard learning addicts but it's learning annex. In the states anyhow its usually a rented public place that offers a day or week course for different things like cooking, pottery, arts, etc. From my understanding its not a single company and more just people doing it, I remember hearing and seeing references for it for years and years back before the internet and things like skillshare, etc

Galaxy Quest... What a blast from the past (but in the best way, as it has kept its charm and humor with age!). I originally saw it in the cinema when I went for a friend's birthday - we were all 8 or 9 years old and enjoyed it then - so it's especially nice that it still held up when I watched it earlier this year. Also, Alan Rickman... There is just something so special about how he was able to pull off dark/surly characters with charm.

A 'learning annex' is (used to be?) a seperate segment of some 'standard' higher education institutions (hence the annex part) designed for the additional or continued education for adult students already engaged in a career. These were supplementary informational courses usually targeted toward specific training/skills and not designed to be taken as part of a degree program.

Literally anyone with $30-$100 bucks could show up.
