I can't believe that she didn't double check to make sure each and every gate always locked pulling on each gate to be extra cautious. She never should've made this type of mistake as an experienced zookeeper. All it takes is 1 fatal mistake.
I think that was a very fair verdict. The family that loved the zoo so much wasn't out to bankrupt it. Samantha did go in by herself, relying on her decades of experience. It was a horrific and tragic accident and although the zoo could have done better by requiring a buddy system and more maintenance on the gates, it was ultimately Samantha who made the error. I think the family understood that. My heart goes out to her husband. That would be such a horrific way to find your wife.
$200,000 is all the family received?? That is a disgrace and a big, huge slap in the face. Shame on you Hamilton Zoo, shame!!

In these cases I don't think the money matters. There is no amount that can replace a loved one so really the payment is just a token to help the family with expenses not to compensate their loss. The outcome that forced the zoo to change their policy and procedures to stop this from happening again was the real result that I think everyone wanted.

I remember back when this happened it was a horrible tragedy, that tiger was not to be messed with he was still a wild animal held in captivity so obviously still had killer instincts!

Unfortunately, the zoo didn't Maintain proper maintenance, and she didn't check that the gate actually closed. It was a horrible accident.

This happened in Boise, ID too. They left a cage unlocked during a swanky fundraiser, and a tiger got out and killed someone.

I've just seen this video in another channel, but the story was different. The guy who worked nights closed the gate, that didn't lock. Samantha ( same name in both videos ). Went in the wash the glass. The tiger came up behind and killed her. Even the description of her throat and death are the same. The other video was aet in England, and the guy left because of guilt

Very sad, but if the place had not been maintained, staff would have been aware of it and extra care should have been taken to ensure that gates closed etc. It's human behaviour that people who are overly familiar or comfortable in a situation drop their guard or become over confident. A terrible situation, but avoidable.

I have a huge lump in my throat after watching this. We can't afford to loose people like this who have dedicated their lives to animals. Nor can we afford to loose a prescious Sumatran tiger. Such a sad situation for her family both biological and those at the zoo. Ultimately the zoo was found responsible due to lack of maintenance so those who failed there have to live with that on their conscience as well. Very sad all round. I'm so glad the tiger was not destroyed,after all he was only doing what tigers do 😢
Well the tiger could have eaten her at any other time as well, not just when the gate was faulty.

'Wild' being the operative word. They are not meant to be in cages for the gratification of humans. Although many are born in captivity the wild instinct will always be there so if we put ourselves in harms way we have to accept the risks. Reintroduce them to the wild I say and we would all be safer, including the animals themselves.

Sad event. While 200k doesn’t seem like a lot, a settlement with millions is hard for the defendant to move forward from. I agree with most the tiger is not at fault. The zoo can remedy their situation and carry on. I’m so sorry for the husband and children. They are the ones who lost the most.

This is a very sad story. I feel terrible for Samantha and her family. But I agree with them that an animal should never be killed just for being an animal. That would just make this story even more tragic.

Every animal has the right to live bit the zoos needs to have more rules and regulations when it's mating seasons especially when it's apex predators like Tigers but even some of the non carnivores can be just as dangerous when they are in mating season and the Tiger Oz shouldn't be put down even though he killed a zoo keeper his wild instincts kicked in an protecting a female tiger next door and I think if he was raised with more love an compassion in his up bringing he might not have attacked someone but no matter what he is a wild animal they are still just as dangerous an unpredictable especially when it is mating season and the zoos needs to have more safety an regulations during mating seasons to guarantee their safety and working in zoos or any other facilities that deals with wild animals needs to have more regulations put in place because of the risk factors that comes with dealing with deadly animals

An apex predator needs to be preserved more carefully. So many unfortunate cases of tigers attacking zoo keepers and handlers and yet people don't learn. A tiger is a tiger after all. No point giving sage advice later - they needed to be more careful.

She locked the tiger in one area as she went into the next...the gate did not lock between them and the tiger was able to get to her when the gate opened (because the gate didn't close properly).
Maybe it was some auto pilot response she been doing the job for a long time no one exspects Gates to not work suddenly this was a freak acident

NEVER forget: these creatures live and are designed to kill other animals evertime they need to eat. It is what they ARE. Sometimes they can be socialized to regard some.humans as not prey... but they still remain predators by nature. There is no malice on their part; that's just what they are. We have to NEVER get complacent around them.
