Let’s hope google actually gets 7 years, that way more company’s will continue to increase support for all models
I used to work for google and i just been let go a week ago so here is what i heard in one the team meetings by the senior management team. They going to support your software for 8-10years but your phisycal handset is not going to last that long. They will make sure that 3-4yrs top or if you are unlucky 2yrs or less. They will slow it down on almost every updates and create uncomfortable user experience... phone will get hot, batery drains..etc. You can thank me later but for now i need to find a new IT job and update my CV. Good luck.

@@manu4ever249Fairphone maybe? When a device fails it's usually just a single component rather than the whole device, so a device with modular components that can be individually replaced stands the best chance of lasting.

I think 7 yrs won't happen. I think they gonna announce a cut on that promise later. On the other hand, if brands would do and settle for 5 yrs of updates, I think in the tech world, that is plenty of time and I would be happy with that.

I dont think anyone will hold their phone for 7 years. Maximum 5 years. In 7 years I doubt they will have pixel 8 users. I bought mine from a carrier £25 a month for 2 years.

This aint the 2010s where every 6 months you got a groundbreaking new update that completely transformed the market. The market has matured a lot and other than incremental upgrades you dont see any groundbreaking innovations anymore. I have had my phone for 4 years now and i think it can easily last more

Subscribed because of this video. Have had a pixel 4a and now a 6a, at one point considered the pixel pass and when they announced they killed it before it took effect I decided I'll never get a pixel again. That could have been their plan all along, to never have fufilled this part of the deal. I'm very happy to see you talking about this as I want it to be common knowledge.

I had an iPad Air 2nd gen which had iOS 8 on it and was updated till iPadOS 15! That’s like 8 major versions of iOS! It’s still runs very well!
Out of all companies, from experience, Apple is the one that has the longest support. This year, they updated my old iPhone SE 1 with iOS 15 something security update. I was like wth! That thing is ancient and I only keep it as a collectors item now but it’s cool how they still care about it to some extent to keep it safe

My iPhone 6S plus was supported (and used) for the full 7 years of its life. I have a 14 Pro Max now but I still use the old one and it’s still getting security updates. OS updates were cut off last year. Would love to see this kind of longevity on Android

It simply is not possible. Only 4 iphones are released every year with a huge price tag. But on Android,there are many phone makers, various chip makers and thousands of model released every year. Also most of them are value for money. How can you expect the same from a 1000$ phone and a 150$ phone??

What you should not forget is: They made the same promise in the EU/Germany - this makes not delivering on this promise much harder. The regulations here are not allowing for them to stop updating the phones earlier without extreme punishment

Eh, they didn’t really nail themselves to a wall when it comes to specifics. They didn’t promise to release every major Android OS Version for 7 years for example. They can throw in a small security update and a new bootlogo once a year and still technically fulfill their „promise“.
Not to mention that the 5-10 remaining pixel 8 users in 7years won’t be quite loud enough for google or lawmakers to care if they don’t.

Google killing Pixel Pass just before the 2-year mark was the nail in the coffin for me. I've been on Android since the T-Mobile G1 (the very first Android phone) and I finally switched to the iPhone for the first time. I've been heavily invested in Google products and services but them continuing to kill off products and services has made me lose all trust in their ability to support their devices.
Been a Google fan since nexus 4 and just switched to iPhone. Been stuck with the pixel 4 xl because the modems in the p6 n 7 pro give me shit service where I work. I told them my nexus 6p shouldn't have better service than the pixel 7 pro and they just apologized. I was on my 4th refurbished 4xl and it was too buggy lol
same here. What infuriates me the most is the Chromecast Audio. They just axed this great dongle with ZERO ability to replicate its functionality. Not even open sourcing the code. With AirPlay, you at least can use Macs, Raspberry Pis or AirPort Wi-Fi routers as receivers, with Chromecast you either buy a speaker or receiver or you're SOL. How am I supposed to play music from an Android phone to a speaker? With a cable? Which then needs a DONGLE? No thanks. iPhone it is.

@@PvtAnonymousfirst, let me just say that I do completely agree with everything you said. It should never be this complicated but I have found a ton of workarounds for still being able to stream in higher quality, similar to my 3 Chromecast Audios but it takes tech savvy and joy from customizing products to be able to do it. I'm just glad they are still supporting the Chromecast Audio instead of bricking them altogether.

Another thing with Google Pixel phones: The Hold for Me feature looks really neat. It was a significant factor in me buying a Pixel phone. After I bought it, I discovered that it only works in the US, Canada and Australia. Of course, this isn't prominently mentioned in their advertising, and most reviewers are US-based.
Same with the latest iOS "Live Voicemail" feature as well, only available in the US and Canada. I live in the UK, we speak the same language, It's a feature that runs on the phone itself, why it's not available I have no idea...
well... most of the "good" feature are always only for US. if i have to get a pixel, it's for the stock (or near stock) experience. Rest of the OEM either is mid range or just bloated OS with their skin...

@@Burty117it’s also a carrier thing. The phone carriers have to be able to stream voicemails in real time for the transcription to work. Most carriers don’t do this and Apple pretty much always work with American carriers first before deploying those features worldwide. It was the same for eSIM, for VoLTE, FaceTime over Cellular, and a bunch of other things
@@KrishnaAdettiwar That's not how the feature works... It literally live transcribes what the person leaving a message is saying, My Google Pixel was able to do this for years, it has nothing to do with carriers. As far as the carrier is aware, we answered the call.

The "coming soon" thing I've noticed as well in many reviews, but also in a sense that companies send "pre production units", so when reviewers find software bugs and say xy doesn't work, they'll also say "well this is a pre production unit, so we can't really criticize that issue, MAYBE it will be fixed later"
I think Google's best comparison to this is their support for Chrome OS support. If they can do it for chromebooks, I don't see why they can't for the pixel.
Chrome browser is very “core” to their business. I would think pixel is too, but less so. Most of the canceled products are side projects.

Chrome OS is basically a chrome browser so it's not a fully fledged OS that would be supported for 7 years.
Because Chrome OS is really just a fork of Google Chrome browser, built on top of Linux.... They can say they support it for 10 years if they want to, or whatever how long the Linux support they are using will last. Pixel is still more of a side project for Google. I remember when Stadia is launched, people points out that Pixel lasts for so long too, then Stadia got killed 2 years later.

There won't be many people still using the devices in 7 years, it's kind of a non-issue I think.

It is lock the customer system. 7 year phone will pass on to some family members and then that family members because new user. 1st user buy same company phone for familiarity.
Apple did that for many year.
the phone won't be usable in 7 years, the battery will be shot, and the hardware won't be able to handle stuff, so it doesn't matter.
@@robotbro7187my iPhone 7+ still runs wonderfully. I can even play decent mobile games. Only reasonable issue is battery, which I can use a power bank for.
When Apple did major OS updates most times I was surprised that some older phones even got certain updates basically because they were so old. 7 years of updates never was a thing. It just happened. There was never a promise or a pledge. Can you imagine still using a Pixel 8 seven years from now. 😀

I’m still using an iPhone X - that’s 6yrs old. This is the first time I’ve not had a full iOS upgrade (ios17); but I’m still getting updates to iOS 16

Really glad you made this video. So important to put this reality out there. It may or may not affect Google at all, but it's so important for consumers to understand this.
Glad you are still willing to talk about potential and real downsides and controversies. It's great that over the years your reviews and videos have always felt trustworthy!
The only thing I could point out is that he rarely does this with Apple, and the same happens with Arun. You can often see videos in which the thumbnail and title tell you right away that it will have a critique or some kind of negative opinion, and those are mostly about Samsung, Google and other companies, but rarely about Apple. And, as I see it, Apple has many more controversial practices and things that not many of their customers are aware about and they almost never talk about it. As an example, while most people I watch outside of the English speaking community were pointing out right away the aspects in wich Apple's faltered, their videos titles were "Better than you think" or "Not just usb-c" kind of defending the product.
Congratulations, Marques on this video! I too watched the Google launch and this thing with 7 years of guaranteed updates, seems to me the best thing offered by such a big company like Google. Super initiative. Since the launch, the Google company has grown in my eyes. Congratulations Google, congratulations Marques!

It reminds me of the changes they did in their Google Workspace plan this year. There’s no unlimited anymore, even for enterprises. And that hasn’t been convenient at all!

Oh interesting! I didn't know Google was still providing unlimited storage. I checked their website, and interacted with the Google representative. They denied offering unlimited in any plan.
I will check again if they have any personal plan. Meanwhile, we have decided to built our in-house setup. That felt more reliable than Google (strangely).

I'm am a Google Fi customer and I am hoping that they don't kill it. I'm in the military and it is the only wireless provider that I can use overseas with no issues. I think they will keep it since they really aren't their own service, but instead use the services of T-Mobile, Sprint (bought by T-Mobile), and US Cellular.
In India we are expanding in this field with "Air fiber" too. It currently has jio and Airtel, top most whales of India network providers. So when there's a competition and need which is a lot here...it is only going to grow more. the main Target here are people who don't have fibre facilities like industrial areas or rural areas.

I’m a computer engineering student in my junior year. We had someone from Google come talk to us today about internships and I straight up asked him how secure he feels the jobs are with their mass layoffs and how often they kill services. He was kinda at a loss for words but said they do try to move developers to different teams when projects get axed. He clearly loves his job but wasn’t too confidence inspiring about my prospects in an entry level position
That can happen anywhere. Continue learning and developing skills so you'll have a better chance of being moved rather than getting axed.
The biggest benefit of working with Google by far is simply having Google on your CV and using that as a major stepping stone to a bigger role elsewhere and demanding a higher wage. In this case it doesn't really matter if Google axe you when they kill services you work on, as long as you have that reference.
I work at Google. I worry about (not really because I don’t really care if it happens) a project getting axed, but not if I will still have a job. Projects getting my axed at Google is so so so common, it’s a part of the job. You just get switched to a new team.
Not worried about mass layoffs since although the raw number is big (15k employees fired), the percentage isn’t that big imo (6-7% fired). This isn’t much different than jobs outside of tech.

What 7 years of software support says to me is that they no longer expect revolutionary updates to Android over that time. Instead it will just be more iterative updates. Obviously that's been pretty clear for a while now, but this is the clearest statement from Google yet about it.
Yeah but to be fair that's what most companies do. Even if you look at Apple, when you update the iphone or Mac it's not that different from before
That's very obvious. Devices are each day depending more on cloud processing, and that doesn't cost performance from the device itself. That's not the future, that's now. Google knows that because they're leading that movement alongside some other big companies. But that's not the point. Even though the device is still good enough for Android 20, will Google commit so many devs to updating Pixel 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 to the latest Android? I don't think specs are the problem here.

Project Fi user here - The Pixel 1 was my first smartphone I've ever owned. When I first got it I got Google FI with it because it was relatively cheap compared to other carriers. I've used FI with the Pixel 1, and then 3a, then 4, and now 7 and have had no issues. I think that is one of their "golden goose" products that should last.
I think that's the problem with large companies (for instance Microsoft) in many times some really good projects are replaced by low graded ones.

Lol, I had exactly the same reaction: cautiously optimistic, but can't help but be skeptical. This will be really great if they can keep 7 year update support going and it becomes an industry standard, or at least raises the bar to 4+ years of support. I was recently pleasantly surprised that Google Nest gave me free support for my 16+ year old 2nd gen Nest thermostat, no questions asked. Now, that was impressive!

Seems to me Google is putting the pressure on other premium Android phones. This also allow Google to continue selling existing Pixels at $100 less than the latest Pixels, just like Apple.

I still have pixel 2 XL and last year I was still receiving security updates. I doubt they will actually support new Android on those phones after the 3rd year, but continue with minor tweaks and security updates which is very doable.

The whole Android 14 update was just 1GB. I think they might be only making slight improvements in coming years. It'll be easier for them to keep pushing updates.

One of the reasons I switched to iPhone and haven’t gone back is the update support. Your phone gets the updates at the same time as newer phones and is supported for way longer. Great if Google can start to do this, but still isn’t perfect since any non Google android phones still get updates way slower and for less total time.

Same. I went to iPhone after 10+ years with Android. After 8 months on iOS, I’m amazed at how many updates I’ve already received. Even the incremental updates.

More than just the updates, the camera on my iPhone 8 broke like six months ago and the Apple store fixed it in 45 minutes. I only had to wait like three days for an appointment and I paid less than $100. Meanwhile, I had to send my 2019 Thinkpad to some random computer store because Lenovo no longer supports my specific laptop and it took them three weeks to replace the battery.

valid. let's hope it encourages other companies to increase their updates promises, even if not all the way up to 7 years, but i think 3 should be the bare minimum for a respectable company and most of them should have upwards of 4 years of major updates
I pre-ordered an 8P based on this promise. Have been by Google since the Nexus 6P. So when I heard about this support, my doubts in Google and desire to switch to iPhone were blown away. But this video just reminded me of the reality I forgot. Sometimes we believe what we want so this was sobering.
I will never preorder agian. Too many issues. Both with customer service and hard tech issues. Good luck, but if it bricks on you after the first few days, just keep your old phone near.

@@morgan13756I'm trading it in unfortunately but still have an extra OP 7P on standby. I'm giving it some thought but may cancel the preorder. Haven't had issues with preorders with them in the past though. Offering $400 trade-in for a $300 phone and free pixel watch 2, they got me.

Availability of updates was one of the key factors that kept me on iOS and in the Apple ecosystem. Android was always hit and miss. Similar with MacOS, the free updates for years from Apple really enhance the value of the product.

For iOS yes Apple has great support but on Mac side it lacks behind.

What I can remember Apple has never ever promises "this or that many years of OS updates for each new iPhone" but we can look back at their history and see how they've done. That's why we can put "6+" years or whatever it is. 6+ is not a promise from Apple. That's what we can expect based on history. Apple has already proved that they can support phones for really long. Google doesn't have that proven history, at least yet.
Nokia is missing from the summary in this video and I know that Nokia now last years is promising that each phone will get X years of OS updates and X years of security updates. 2-4 years I think. No idea if they keep their promises.
As I see it, Apple is the leader in this area and they don't even promise anything. Apple is the king of building up TRUST, and they do it by delivering and not by promising. This is a big reason why iPhone is selling so good.
Anyone knows how many years of OS updates all previous Google Pixel phones received? Would love to see a summary for all those phones. Maybe it's available on Wikipedia?
Worth noting: the very first iPhone only received 3 years of OS updates, right? Then every new iPhone model got longer OS support and now it's around 6 years. I'm not sure exactly how many years it is.
Here's how I do: I buy an iPhone model that I wanna buy. I use it as long as the battery is okay and the phone itself is okay. When I feel that the battery is no longer good enough so it's a big problem, instead of let someone replace the battery I simply buy a new iPhone and when I buy a new iPhone I get a brand new battery! Every new iPhone for me is kind of s "battery replacement".
After a few years with the same iPhone model, the lastest iOS and the updates apps are heavier for the phone. Everything will run slower, not faster. Maybe some exceptions. So getting a new iPhone also means:
+ faster CPU
+ faster RAM
+ maybe more RAM
+ everything is more powerful
I often wait as long as possible to buy a new iPhone and I buy an affordable model. iPhone SE is a great value product! I know the camera sucks, especially in low-light so good luck to take a photo of the moon at evening/night 😂 but I'm fine with that...
@@cjeeldeits also the fact that their longest supported phones (6s / 7) had puny specs and outdated design compared to today and still got all the updates. Imagine how long they would support something like the 15 / 15 pro with almost m1 macbook level performance and specs. Its possible they support them for 10+ years.

Thanks for calling out google. I rely so heavily on google products but always live on the edge of not knowing if i'll be able to use a service. Your reaction to their 7 year promise was the same as mine. No way they will support the phone for so long, in 3 years tops they'll annouce that its going to be the last supported year for the phone and they'll continue to erode the trust of their users.
Trust a multi billion dollar company? Hmm.
While it's one thing to not trust Google for random smaller projects, you have to remember that 1. Google will continue work on Android 2. The Pixels are on their 8th generation. They've shown commitment to the Pixel series, there's no reason they can't support them for another 7 years.
Most probably they will support it for 3-4 years, then make a post with an apology and maybe give you a good deal to trade in that phone for the latest pixel 12-13 or whatever.

i got 100 dollars towards a new phone. Not great compensation but something. not to mention i am grandfathered in to the discount for all of the services included.

If it's more than yeah it sucks, they still shouldn't have done it, but at least you got more than just your money back. Does that make sense?
That part of this video was slightly misleading. Pixel users had their original phones fully paid off and received $100 in Google store credits.

I think Google should be able to handle 7 years of OS upgrades without much trouble. If you're into custom ROMs like I am, you'll notice that after getting 2 years of OS upgrades from the OEM, you can often get 3, 4, or even 5 more years of upgrades from the custom ROM community.
For that they should open source the drivers, in order to get even 10 years from the community
Custom ROMs are usually more UI focused, the OS support that Google and Apple are doing is more of the boring but essential, it’s not flashy nor will you notice any changes. Custom ROMs also don’t handle security patches as frequent nor can they do hot fix patches.
Sure but there is no guarantee your phone will still function after year 3.
@@shaggydawg5419I recently replaced my Pixel 3a after owning it for 5 years. It finally got problems that I decided was too much trouble to repair and better to replace. Although I don't know what phone will last 7 years, I imagine it is definitely possible.

I am very pleased with my A54 i bought the 8GB ram and 256 storage . Samsung offering 4 years of os updates and 5 security was one of the reason also your video on the A54 helped me .. Wish you well
