- Join us as we head off on a ten-day trip to the spearfishing Mecca of Ha'apai, Tonga. We dive an active volcano and are lucky enough to shoot some big fish and swim with Sharks, Dogtooth tuna, Whales, Wahoo and even a Whale shark! Does diving get any better than this? It does, the backdrop is two volcanoes one of which is an active volcano that puffs away behind an awesome cone shaped Kao Volcano. This place is epic!

Wow that was an amazing trip of a lifetime. You know you have a good ecosystem when sharks turn up at the click of a trigger and the smell of blood. 🦈🦈🦈
Hopefully one of many! Sharks are usually a good sign but not always of a healthy ecosystem, we rarely come across the top predatory sharks anymore and are seeing a larger number of smaller reef sharks. We don’t like it when the local shark population knows what the trigger click means!
@@sailingpopao Are Hammerheads far and few between, yeah the blacktips, did look pretty small and gnarly aggressive, come to think of it.
Didn’t see any of the big predatory sharks all season, not one tiger, no big hammers. Tonnes of grey reefs and a lot of silver fringe whalers.

Hi how much was the accommodation cost in haapai? And how much was it to hire a boat and go to kao island?
I went with a mate, you’d have to google to check the current prices, cheaper out of whale season which is between July-September, hope that helps!
@@sailingpopao ok accommodations no problem, but would like to go on a boat ride to the island. I'd only go to haapai if theres boats to hire that go to kao?

I have a question, what did you use to travel with your fishing gear??
We use the old riffe speargun bags, unfortunately they don’t make them anymore. I’d probably look a sports tube or something similar if we had to buy a new one.

@@mounga100 oh wow! What a beautiful home you have. We'd love to get back there with Popao one day. Dogtooth are an extremely difficult fish to hunt, we use a Riffe Raidar but any bluewater gun should do it. You will need some serious lifting power though. Strong floatline, cable shooting line and big two atmosphere floats.
