Testing CSF Charge Coolers for the F10 M5/F13 M6

  • After the impressive result of the CSF Intercooler for the F87 M2 we were keen to see how big of a difference the CSF Charge Coolers for the F10 M5/F13 M6 could be.
    When tuning these cars the standard charge coolers start to struggle with keeping the Air Inlet Temperature down, meaning the ECU will start to pull Ignition Timing, and not making full power. This can be quite a big problem especially in hotter climates.
    The CSF coolers are a full metal design, with cast end tanks and having been designed to maximise volume by utilising 3D Scanning and CFD to optimise flow. They also feature ports for an injection system such as Water/Methanol.
    In our testing they performed exceptionally well, with IAT temperatures 14c better than stock, but in hotter ambient conditions, meaning in identical conditions they should perform even better than our testing.

    Great video! I'd love to see a cheap vs expensive. Like CSF INTERCOOLER vs PHOENIX RACING F10 m5 intercooler maybe???

    Man I like your videos. No fake funny jokes, no filler. Just useful info. Do you think the CSF Charge Coolers would allow the engine to make more power by themselves?

      Thanks, we try to keep it simple and down to earth! In our testing we didn’t find that the coolers made any more power, just sustained the full power for longer under tougher conditions.

    Great work.
    JB4 is useful for logging and fine tuning.
    Really good to see parts coming to market for the S64tu and getting tested by a company as thorougher Evolve.
    CSF intercoolers look like a good mod for those who don't want methanol injection or a good additional safety net at high boost over and above the good safety protocols in the JB4.

    Unrelated to the video, but you are very knowledgeable about all cars. Do you know if there is a difference between vpower diesel and regular diesel. And which one would you recommend? (Performance diesel - s4, sq5)

    Great info. Just added CSF to f10-M. Is the boost level in the data related to the revs?

    how does the eventuri compare to the gruppe M cf air intake, in your opinion?

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  6 лет назад +3

      It's impossible for us to be unbiased in this, but the Eventuri is far superior to the Gruppe M intake.

    Was there a before and after dyno to see what difference the temp and boost drop did?

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  6 лет назад +5

      We only did on-road testing for this. We don't normally expect a cooler to make more power unless it's replacing something very restrictive, but be able to keep temps down and maintain a power figure for longer as the car becomes heat soaked.

    • @sugershakify
      @sugershakify 4 года назад

      @@EvolveAutomotive Dont understand this comment. Lower temps = dense air charge = more power. Bigger chargercooler = less restriction = more cfm per psi of backpressure before wastegate opens = way more power. Would have loved to see before and after dyno, I bet the car picked up 20rwhp. 2 degrees over ambient at 20psi is nuts.

    • @surreaLinnovatioN
      @surreaLinnovatioN 2 года назад +1

      @@sugershakify But he also said it dropped a PSI, so it's a wash. The main benefit is consistent power without heat soak

    • @sugershakify
      @sugershakify 2 года назад +2

      @@surreaLinnovatioN it should drop a psi. Remember psi is NOT a measure of power or air flow. It is a measure of back pressure. If you improve flow efficiency through the system you will make more power with less back pressure and hence will see a decrease in psi. Heat soak is derived from how well the heat exchanger in the bumper can shed the heat being picked up by the bigger charge air cooler. A bigger charge air cooler wont help with heat soak unless the heat exchanger in the bumper was increased in size as well. Misunderstanding what's going on here with heat being removed and why psi drops with a higher flowing charge cooler.

    if you added this to a M6 with tune and downpipe what can hp I expect from intercoolers

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  Год назад +1

      The car in the video has both of those already.
      Any potential HP gain would vary depending on ambient conditions. The big gain with these coolers is the consistency of the low IATs, meaning the car does not pull timing as quickly.

      Unfortunately the F10/F13 coolers don't fit, and it's not that big of a market for many companies to offer it. CSF don't make a charge cooler for the X5/X6M.

    • @EvolveAutomotive

      That's not something we logged. What's your thinking behind comparing them?

    • @StrikeEngine
      @StrikeEngine 6 лет назад +1

      Hi. The inlet water temps dictate the cooling. Could the temps have been different between the tests?

    • @EvolveAutomotive
      @EvolveAutomotive  6 лет назад +3

      The coolant temperature is controlled by the thermostat, so unless the ambient temperature is incredibly high to the point where the radiator is failing to cool the coolant it should be very consistent. Having looked again at the JB4 logs I believe the coolant stayed within 1c of each other for both tests, both hovering around 88c.
