But after every battle he collected any arrows he could find and in every town he bought all the arrows they had. Fast forward to the end of the campaign. They're called to help fight this huge army. Hundreds of thousands. The battle is going to start the next day. Everyone spends time prepping. The Ranger climbs a hill overlooking the soon to be battlefield. Then he pulls out a piece of paper from his notes and hands it to the GM. Its a list of every arrow he's collected. The Ranger is going to used his bow. The GM is silent for a moment, the he puts his notes away. He describes the archer nocking the arrow and letting it fly. The arrow splits. 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, soon too many to count. AJStarhiker Descent into Avernus, actually. Theta 6 is a “Mekhanite”, a homebrew creature that I’m playtesting for a future spelljammer campaign of mine. Supposedly, a group of human explorers were trapped in one iteration the plane of Mechanus, and ran out of supplies. The first god to ensure their prayers was a primordial named “Mekhane”, who gifted them with “arcane” technology. After a confrontation with another god in which Mekhane dies, these “Mekhanites” start spreading throughout the multiverse looking for the pieces to rebuild him. My future campaign deals with a Mekhanite civil war, which bleeds over into the Forgotten Realms, but Theta 6 is just a soldier sent by his superiors to aid the party (and maybe find a piece of the broken god while he’s at it).
I’m happy that the player knew archery in real life and showed his fellow players how archery works in real life to argue why his would be so powerful!
I’m with you there. I’m on my first campaign and I’ve somewhat avoided my pc’s archery skills and end up settling melee combat because rules on ranged weapons confuse me (also, my dm keeps giving me melee weapons that do more damage and has made it hard for me with good range). The only times I’ve used a bow is when the villain we are fighting can fly or if I have no other way of damaging our opponents.
@@felixlavulpe3506 as a fellow marksman, i have to sympathize with you on ranged weapons in general. Even with firearms with the different calibers and charges. It must be similar with longbows and archery because range depends on similar factors (arrow weight, draw weight, the weight of the head, and the draw length). Admittedly, i am a bit more well versed in firearms (murica), but the skills you displayed on the range and in character are amazing. Especially with that last shot, good lord that must've needed a LOT of lead. It takes a good deal of skill to take out a target moving at 30+ mph at less than 20 yards with a shotgun consistently (a score of 12/25 is average).... to take out a target moving at double that speed and with a single arrow is absolutely amazing.
It is really cool. Though, I've always figured that the range restrictions in DnD are because its focus is as a game, rather than attempting to really simulate battles.
@@MeeraTheMooneyed well, it is focus is as a game, but even games that use instruments of war (games like war thunder, world of tanks, and world of warships) their baseline is in historical realism, but they then use gameplay to help balance it for pvp. The last line about being put in dungeons to punish that kind of character made me twitch a little. A GM should never punish a power build, but rather challenge it! (Unless the player is being a total jack-hole, in which case, have at it.) Make the enemy adapt. The DM can power build too, and the only way a power build can break the game is if the DM assumes that the player's character is the only person who could ever pull off what they're doing. The most common solution for me when challenging a power player is to have a new antagonist pop up, saying "You thought you were the only one?" All you have to do is think of something that would make the power build's abilities less of an advantage and throw that at them; not enough to screw them over completely but just enough to give them a little tension. Imagine how interesting a snipe battle between two master arches would be! Then again, hot damn if this didn't make for an awesome story! This is why I hesitate to come down on a power player and usually wait until they start ruining the fun for other players before taking action. Runes had that motive for his character to just go home and retire, so there was no real threat of the character going on to bulldoze the whole campaign or wreck the campaign world. He was under the narrative limitation of just wanting to get the job done and go home. This ultimately lead to that final moment where he fired the arrow and packed up to go home while it was still in flight. That was bad ass!

I have an archer Character I've been using in my friend's D20 future campaign. Though I don't have the godly accuracy of this one, but I don't need it when I'm the one who can control the flow of the battle. My character is a Canine Moreau set in the year 4000 or close to it. My friend's campaign has nearly anything you want lazer rifles, star ships, and more form D20 future. Well I asked for a compound bow, and he was like really you can have anything else, but you want a bow. After a few minutes he was like give me a good reason and I'll let you have it. Well fast forward a bit and I have a compound bow while many, many arrows types. My current count of arrows, at the time of this post, 21 different arrows. My most used arrows at the moment is the Smoke arrows they work just like smoke grenade, EMP arrow works the same as EMP grenade, costume arrow "Jammer Arrow" used to block radio communications locally. My character named Ahri Kozlov is a Transporter, but has been modified to First Respond-er, because I'm playing the fish out of water. She is a caring individual that has had to deal with a rough childhood trying to help and save lives gets caught up in a mercenary operation because she has one of the fastest star ships. Up till recently I've been playing with low range because we classified the arrow into two types; Type 1 is the standard arrow which has normal range and Type 2 that has half the range. the Smoke, EMP, and Jammer arrows are classified as Type 2. So my range is limited, but I don't fight to hit people . My arrows are setup in a way that I can fight using the environment to my advantage. Allies got pinned Ahri shots a Smoke arrow at allies feet providing instant cover. Enemies have heavy armored powered equipment Ahri shots the ground nearest with EMP arrow disabling them till they are powered back up. Large group of enemy spotted Ahri shots off a Jammer arrow cutting off radio communications. We have currently only done one mission but with that one mission Ahri has completely controlled and devastated the enemy by not letting them get the upper hand. She is the one who is there for tactical support. Since her arrows all have secondary uses they each have some penalty to damage so she hasn't been able to kill intently. Edit: fixing grammar and misspelling.
Is that the one where you have a quiver that compacts all your arrows into a single arrow that splits when you fire it? And then the player just keeps on hoarding arrows like its BOTW out here until they can take out an army with one shot?

@Vampiresoap I honestly fell out of DnD for a short while just as Pathfinder was on its way, and before 4E(ive heard mixed reviews on that one) But what I remember of 3-3.5 There were tons of books and resources that were available from WotC and its affiliates The customization you could achieve was dumbfounding at times
@Vampiresoap And I wouldn't say 5E sucks Its coming up with some things slowly, compared to its predecessors, but I would assume that is the point They had an Overabundance of material out and now they are sifting thru it all to find what is suitable for the Now generation and will be accepted by the Older generation of players Personally I do wish they'd make an update to many of the Older books, like Dark Sun especially. The barren wasteland of how Magic destroyed the area, very apocalyptic medieval fantasy feel
@Vampiresoap Look for a game called The Bards Trilogy Its very reminiscent of DnD in how you set-up a party based on race/class combo You're experience and leveling is built on each characters personal experience Its rudimentary movements is similar to a virtual DnD grid map. 4 cardinal directions and interactive environments
Reminds me of when I built a character to have stupid range and accuracy multipliers, then nat 1'd my first attack roll. My skittish character was proving his aim and shooting a dead pig at range, but managed to shoot the entirely wrong direction, through a hole in a door, and into an NPC that was helping us inside. Luckily the PC my character was proving himself to didn't like that NPC and just chastised him with "wrong pig," allowing me to roll something OTHER THAN a nat 1 and prove that yes I could shoot straight.
That was freaking awesome! The kingdom had better spread legends of this guy far and wide and have a statue of him. Just have the legends say he died shortly after the battle was won so nobody comes to bother him and his family.
Reminds me that story from the books in skyrim, where the only shot that ever missed it's target, the lodged arrow hit the mark, long after the archer was dead.
Kind of reminds me of Dafydd Ap Hywel from "The Dragon Knight" series by Gordon R. Dickson. A Welsh bowman, who is the finest in the land, and will prove it to anyone who says otherwise. Took out several charging armored men-at-arms before the rest retreated, and killed five more before any alarms were sounded, plus other expert shots.
Single-handedly, except for the vast army of meat shields stopping him from dying. At least the player had knowledge of bows and archery irl. I appreciate that a lot
I told them it wasn't single handed. The rest of the party did some heavy duty carrying, if it wasn't for the paly and cleric we would've gotten wiped.
It is clear that the player homebrewed some overpowered additional trade offs with a DM who did not know any better under the guise of historical knowledge. Basically the player cheated and the DM allowed it to happen. Not much of achievement unless the achievement was to make a broken character and bamboozle the DM.
@@craigtucker1290 i dunno, arguing to have your shots take multiple turns to hit doesn't sound like much of an advantage, especially as it's not a standard rule in 3.5... And the level of power the shots are getting is entirely plausible at high level (lets not forget this is a 3.x game) and the special arrow types are straight off the arcane archer class features. It sounds more like arguing for tradeoffs than baboozling for extras.
@@SymbioteMullet Except it isn't a tradeoff, but the player is trying to pass it off as a tradeoff when it is a min/maxing rules lawyering attempt. There is at least one ability that eliminates all range penalties for the Cragtop archer, but the legitimate tradeoff is that for this benefit, the archer can only make a single attack a round. So when the player gets the DM to allow them to.combine all the damage for the multiple attacks they would normally get in a round into a single attack, they are getting around the legitimate limitation while making it seem like they're are giving something up in return when in fact they're gaining something. Hence, they bamboozled the DM by knowing what the rules and mechanics limited their abilities to and successful argued in a way that seemed like they were giving something up to gain something of equal or lesser value when what they really did was break the limitation the game set to balance the class. Rules lawyering at its finest... I would also suspect a similar thing happened in the group to nerf the miss an a natural roll of a 1 on attack rolls as never missing is a but unbelievable as well, but that us only a guess.
@@craigtucker1290 hmm, i don't know Cragtop archer, I'll have to look that one up... There are however (epic) feats that also remove range penalties, and he did mention having a custom bow (i do not beleive for a second it was actually nonmagical), and from my own experience i know how easy it is to smash damage upwards with a fully customised bow and enhanced arrows.
@@SymbioteMullet At the 2:00 minute mark is when the OP states that they worked it out with the DM to allow for "more damage and a higher crit" than what a single shot will allow. This is basically cheating to overcome some of the limitations with imposed by some of the class abilities. I would like to see all the feats, skills, equipment and whatnot that went into the character to see what the character should have been capable of as opposed to how this characters was improved. I would be interested in the bows stats as well to see what was done. All in all, it is not a legitimate character, build, or accomplishment as there was some critical rule and game mechanic violations that had to occur to make the story happen. Are there any feats that make it so an archer never misses? I could understand a feat that might allow a reroll with some limitations, but this story seems to defy what was allowed under the madness of the 3.5 rules which speaks to power gaming, something one shouldn't be proud of achieving if they had to further break a game that already allowed for it. Rules lawyering at its finest and most deplorable since it happened and the DM was none the wiser to what the player was able to pull off.
I have an anthropomorphic bear that is so massive and strong that he uses a light ballista as a heavy crossbow and uses a heavy crossbow as a light crossbow. In the games rules it takes three rounds to load and fire a heavy crossbow and a light crossbow can be loaded and fired each round. The chances of him hitting is not all that good but when he does hit he can kill almost any person in the game as no matter how strong or week a person is as everyone has twelve hit points and he can do twelve points of damage with one hit. Most weapons in the game can only to one to three hits of damage each round depending on how powerful the weapon is and how much armor the defender is wearing. You are walking down a trail and you see something fly past you. What ever it was hits the guy next to you and you see the guy fly back as a massive hole in his chest sprays blood for a very short time all over the trail. What do you do? (A) Shit in your pants? (B) Drop your weapons and run for your life? Or (C) Surrender and pray to what ever gods you believe in that they are taking prisoners? Oh by the way A and B or A and C are also acceptable options.
This had me fucking laughing the entire time. This character would be terrifying to fight against, and I just love the roleplay potential for what very well may be the best archer on the material plane.
Yes, this is amazing, and then equip the bow that every 5 feet the arrows double, at only 120 feet it can do an AVERAGE of 2000 damage by just the arrows
This man is a pure genius. And he made Ashtoshan! His characters make any I have designed pale as bones in comparison. My "best" was a Half-Elf Sorcerer who is the adopted son of Bahamut. And he was clumsy in battle [I have never rolled well in melee combat; he always hit himself with his quarterstaff somehow].
I built an archery fighter in 5E, using the sharpshooter archetype from the unearthed arcana, when the archer at 10th level beat a kraken with his insane archery buffs the DM asked me to alter my play style because if he built encounters to challenge me he would wipe the party but if he built challenges for everyone else I would steam roll them. Gerdine is still a legendary name in my group
There is no sentence, phrase, or metaphor that cannot be made more colorful by Runesmith's voice. You made the right call, inviting him to narrate this story. Love both your channels, guys, and well done. :)

SPECTACULAR post! Love the story. Vaguely reminded me of an Archery focused, early edition Ranger I once played. (VERY vaguely) He wasn't anywhere NEAR as OP as THIS guy. (if fact, he wasn't even on par with his melee party member - especially after Mr Melee got a pair of Boots of Speed) But he DID study a particular archery style called "One Shot, One Kill". (basically, take longer to shoot, get a hit & damage bonus)
This reminds me of a human battle master fighter archer I played in 5e. She told a fire giant that was about 3 rounds out "you stay there and we will go on our way and I won't have to fill you with arrows." The giant never made it to us, not that he didn't try. She she was good at math and better at archery and she knew there wasn't a chance in hell that giant was going to be anything more than target practice, she would have proffered he let her save the arrows.
Cragtop Archer is one of the funnest characters I ever played. Mine was a half-giant with a with a giant 12 foot tall bow and javelins of returning that I shot through it as arrows. From the tower in the center of the city ruled by one of the other players I could easily hit anything out to the horizon in any direction. Basically just Hawkeye Gough from Dark Souls, believe it or not before DS came out though. Except my guy was a loud obnoxious mercenary instead of a quiet giant.
So you're telling me that was a fighter Archer that was able to literally destroy an army or two and was that badass? I would like this character build
Cragtop archer and homebrew swapping quantity for quality on shots back in 3.5. He didn't wipe out armies on his own, but he could certainly thin out groups or pick off officers.

He lives for ranged combat. But this... THIS is what I aspire to be. Long live Lewie, God of Snipers. Theta offers YOU his prayers.
In my world I am now going to make a archery good based off Lewie
Shadowrun?
@@ARandomCogboi ah, my bad. I saw 'cybernetic arms' and my brain jumped to Shadowrun. Probably because I'm currently in a campaign.

I’m happy that the player knew archery in real life and showed his fellow players how archery works in real life to argue why his would be so powerful!
The ranges in D&D for stuff always drove me nuts.
In pve (like DND settings), the focus should have gameplay mechanics based on realism. That would help everyone most

"And gives some poor fool a third eye socket" is my favorite quote from this awesome tale

This mildly reminds me of a sniper I played in an old game. Dude was named Wolfram Nocte, and shot the king of an enemy kingdom from a ridiculous distance, starting a massive war. He also once shot a zeppelin down with an explosive bullet, making baaaasically a nuclear explosion leveling a large chunk of the enemy's capital due to a nat 20 and targeting the balloon section. Was a fun first session XD
Ah, yes. A man of culture like myself. My character is currently shooting his way through Hell (of his own volition, mind you), and won’t stop until he finds what he’s looking for. It’s fun, being that one guy who snipes all the enemies before your teammates even draw their weapons. At least, it was until the (literal) devils started using ambush tactics. “Clever Girl”... To be fair, Ares also lacked any amount of chill, but his wife who's name slips my mind made up for the both of them since she represented the tactical side of War. Yes the Greeks had three different deities for War each one representing the three different eras so to speak of it. Ares represented the earliest where numbers = victory. Artemis represented the glory/reputation victory and skill in war gained the city states such as Sparta and Athens. And Ares' wife represented the tactical side of warfare.

Its coming up with some things slowly, compared to its predecessors, but I would assume that is the point

Personally I do wish they'd make an update to many of the Older books, like Dark Sun especially.

ahh I love playing snipers, always a joy to put a bolt or arrow from outside their sight, for all their hp.

Felix LaVulpe yeah, those golems were a serious threat
Makes my favourite arcane archer build look a bit wimpy. I love the utter madness 3.x allowed.
Thanks for bringing runesmith and I loved your cameo on his channel.

Ok Felix just need to write a book already. His way of describing stories is something else.
Tried. I'm not made for books, I just write lore.
Felix LaVulpe Well what ever you do, you have a gift my friend.
I love how that Archer is practically Archer from Fate/staynight, LOL!
The evil lord tried to cross the ranger with a big stick on his hip.
