The adventurer reverently put down the old tome, it's centuries-old parchment, leather, and ink preserved by magic as of yet unknown. They stepped away from the humble grave beneath the magnificent tree with a bow of their head and a hand over their heart, a gesture of respect.
For so long, the adventurer had searched for Astoshan, a legend even amongst legends; driven not by power, wealth, or glory...but simple curiosity. The need for knowledge and answers burned more and more within them with every passage of Astoshan's memoirs they read, every story of his greatness they heard.
Now it was over. Their answers were found, curiosity at rest for now. Yet...they would not rest for long; for there were other tales of greatness to know, other legends to explore and research.
"Thank you...for everything." The adventurer spoke, expressing both their own gratitude, and that of countless others unspoken and unheard.
As they bowed deeply and walked away, they stopped briefly, looking back, before continuing onward with a warm smile.
For the wind had whispered to them in reply.

I'd love to play in a game where the remains of Astoshan can be found.
"In the snowy north, surrounded by tundra and snow-capped mountains, you find a strange, temperate forest, certainly not natural for this climate."
"Wandering through the forest at night, you hear the constant moans indicative of undead, while during the day, every part of nature seems to be brimming with life."
"At the center of the forest, you find an enormous tree. Within its trunk, you can almost make out the features of a beautiful maiden."
"The tree's branches reach in all directions, but seem to hang lower in one spot, almost like a protective shroud. Beneath the shroud, you find a spot of dirt, oddly lacking in life compared to the forest around it. Atop what you can only assume to be a grave by its shape and size, you find a thick tome bound in black leather, partially covered by the dirt. On the bottom of the cover, you can faintly make out, in small writing: _For Astoshan, your flower, Alfhilda_ "

My guess is that the power that was keeping Astoshan from aging was his partial transformation into a demigod of necromancy. He looked into the abyss of necromantic power, and the abyss looked back and said "OK."

Orcus wasn't terribly fond of him, more than a couple undead coups. Astoshan allowed Orcites into the city and actually had a few temples just because he knew having a city of zombies meant there would be Orcites, might as well keep them in a spot where you can keep an eye on them and make it very clear that if they try anything it won't end well.

    To Astoshan's creator:
The story of the Gray Necromancer was quite the journey to listen to, all of it well told (and well read). As others have expressed, I would also enjoy there being a book centered on Astoshan, much like how the Dragonlance books were based off of D&D campaigns. Even though I already know what has been shared on this channel, I feel I would still enjoy reading a book about Astoshan and his adventures/accomplishments.
I think Astoshan is the first time I've heard of a True Neutral character that wasn't played as "they don't care because they're neutral".
On the one hand, I'm tempted to put a nod to Astoshan in the world I'm building. On the other, I do not know if I would be able to do him and his legacy justice.
May Astoshan's slumber alongside his love be pleasant and peaceful.
    To All Things D&D:
While some commenters have said some pronunciations were off, you read the story of the Gray Necromancer splendidly. The voice you adopted for Astoshan perfectly fits his personality and how he carried himself. It also made his dialogue seem more like the reflections of an old and wise man with a somber tale to tell.

    Astoshan's legacy is...
    A brilliant campaign setting!
There are so many possibilities here.
We can imagine, for instance, a future when, long after Astoshan's departure, the city of Kyopelinvuori is being ruled by less capable beings, and things like escaped zombies are becoming a real problem. The players would have to decide whether to try fighting the city or fixing it.

I would imagine the nature one is either dead or a tree and the necromancer one might be a litch or like her father.

imagine you are playing dnd and you meet two npc's, one is a necromancer and the other a druid, and they take you to a huge city with undead plp but you aren't allowed to kill them. but you're a paladin so it's really stressful not doing a Leeroy Jenkins.

If this isnt made into a book i doubt i will be alone among the royally pissed 😃. That being said if you make a kickstarter or something like that to make the story of Astoshan into a book please link it so i can contribute. Again i ask please can we get some info on the meta data about Astoshan my pathfinder game has already started but im willing to sacrifice my 4th lvl human wizard to become the vessel in wich Astoshan is reborn.

I thought about it but I'm not made for that kind of writing. I do lore well, not full stories with dialogue on both sides.

"Our service, eternal; Our sacrifice, infinite; Our regrets? Abandoned." The story of a Necromancer who truly walked the line between black and white, good and evil, comes to a close, and I loved every second of it. Astoshan is the kind of epic character I long to write well.

Whoever's reading this story sounds a little like Gideon Emery. This is a good thing in my book, mind -- I'm partial to the sound of Mr. Emery's voice, and weird where people's voices in general are concerned. XD But yes. This is a fantastic ending to Astoshan's story.
