This was one of my favourite sketches from the latter days of SCTV. Nasty, pointed comments about current (for the time) popular music, with several quotable lines. "I wanted the guy who wrote the Love Boat theme."
@@BigDogCountry Which explains why Saturday Night Live's quality was faltering (that, and the whole, "Hey, let's try to make season six like the new version of seasons 1 to 5).
Here's how we're going to work this. I'm going to give you a chance to get up and walk off the show. If you don't do it so help me I'm gonna knock your block off!
I like when Bill Needle got his show canceled, that was hilarious. This made me crack up too, "Where do you come off inspiring all those young kids to become alcoholics!" lol
One of the funniest things is that it's unlikely that any kids ever listened to the Pina Colada song. Also, I don't know if Dave Thomas was parodying Bill O'Reilly, but he sure sounded like him!
When I was a complete band geek in my Junior and Senior High music programs in the mid-late '80s, one of my classmates/fellow student musicians was a trumpet player, hugely into Chuck Mangione. I hadn't seen the Bill Needle sketch then, but I recall feeling much the same, especially about his hat and hair. Haha 😆 Thankfully, I was a woodwind player back in the low reed section, so I didn't have to hear this classmate's continual gushing and fawning every day. 😂 #teambassclarinet #teamtenorsax
It's funny to read the comments comparing Bill with Ohlberman, O'Reilly, etc because my first thought was "he's the prototype for Colbert!" In truth, there were obnoxious hosts before that. Joe Pyne was the most famous.
By the title, you'd think he'd just be hosting a really low budget version of NBC's short-lived 1977 game show Shoot for the Stars (which was revived by producer Bob Stewart in 1986 as Double Talk).
Timeless comedy, yet why are there noodleheads who insist on spinning this narrative into the political field? That’s why today’s comedy smells like week old fish.
Bill can take Mrs. Falbo and Mr. Messenger along with him to whatever maximum-security facility Donnie Dorko is going to be calling home, for some quality sing-along entertainment.
I'm so grateful to my dad for having all of these recorded when I was a kid, Greatest show
Rupert Holmes wandering in front of the camera after being thrown out...
I'm dying! lol
LOL yeah... I laugh at it every time. It shows how they understood bad TV so well
I love how they play the music as they exit after he kicks them out. Nice touch.
In over 35 years, I have never seen anything as funny as SCTV.
I have.
Try Firesign Theatre. They're in the same league with SCTV, but they were not on TV.
These guys might get you a laugh:

ruclips.net/video/k5gQ_rruDmc/видео.html
Trailer park boys.
I love how they see them off the set with the same musical accompaniment as they entered with.
"Rupert the reindeer?" ....i think Needle's been dipping in the ouzo with LaRue again!
chuck mangione dance intro {& that face!} ~~ TOO hysterical! :D
This was one of my favourite sketches from the latter days of SCTV. Nasty, pointed comments about current (for the time) popular music, with several quotable lines. "I wanted the guy who wrote the Love Boat theme."
At the end you get the idea he’s *really* going to rip into Alan Alda and Sissy Spacek on the next show!!! 😂
Dave Thomas didn’t get enough credit spot on with everything
So much talent. Moranis doing Mangione was pure gold.
Don't forget his Woody Allen. Then he becomes a millionaire playing a simp on "Ghostbusters". At least he eventually earned what he was worth.
I was looking for Morton Downey Jr, and this Needle guy pops up!
Anybody who loved SCTV and hates the Pina Colada song will understand....
Man, the 80's hair conflicts with the 70's suit. Perfect for 1980
That's because the 70's and 80's were clashing then.
@@BigDogCountry Which explains why Saturday Night Live's quality was faltering (that, and the whole, "Hey, let's try to make season six like the new version of seasons 1 to 5).
After all these years, I still remember Needle swatting Chuck Mangione's hat (and hair) off. That's comedy gold.
"The only reason I had you on this show is you play the Love Boat theme"
SCTV always proves that good comedy is always timeless.
They actually found a Flugelhorn for this.
First time I see this, and I couldn't stop laughing the minute Ric Moranis shows up :D
And they managed to find a Fluegelhorn!
@@BigDogCountry Juul Haalmeyer is all about authenticity.
@@natureandphysics403 And dancers.
@@natureandphysics403 They did so much with so little.
@@BigDogCountry They did less with nothing!
I loved Bill Needle!!
Rupert Holmes also wrote Timothy. Ha.
Needle comes on a bit strong, but he makes a lot of good points.
dave is the john cleese of sctv...the violent one lol
this; from 1982 is funnier than ANYTHING on TV today!!!
Here's how we're going to work this. I'm going to give you a chance to get up and walk off the show. If you don't do it so help me I'm gonna knock your block off!
Bill Needle always got cancelled after only one show.
@Anthony Arguien Sometimes in the middle of the show as it got shorter and shorter.
Can you blame them? What guest would put up with him?
MORE BILL NEEDLE! PLEASE!
I like when Bill Needle got his show canceled, that was hilarious. This made me crack up too, "Where do you come off inspiring all those young kids to become alcoholics!" lol
Thanks so much for this! That stupid "Pina Colada" song was one of the most irritating things of it's time. Rupie got what he deserved from old Bill!
Big Bill Needle fan here, but somehow never saw this one. Thanks for posting!
David Goldstein, better known as Rupert Holmes is now 70 years old.
Dave Thompson is great as Bill Needle, in this sketch Dave’s right arm was actually in a cast which is why he’s hardly using it.
*Dave Thomas
@@zoots15 Yep, damn voice text lol I loved SCTV better than SNL
@@hardlines4 👍👍
@@zoots15 But not the founder of Wendy's, though.
SCTV is they way the world should still be . FUNNY and if you don’t like it you can get the hell off my show !
GENIUS!

Also, I don't know if Dave Thomas was parodying Bill O'Reilly, but he sure sounded like him!
Chuck Mangione, burned out faster than a dime store candle...this is probably his only reference on the Internet...
OMG...Rick Moranis as Chuck Mangione.

Great parody. Eugene Levy is in top form. Dave Thomas' character is really funny.
I'd love for all talk show hosts to act like him, heheheh
Ok here’s how we’re gonna work this 😂😂
A lot of Wally George influence there, too.
I actually liked the Pina Colada song and I thought this skit was one of the funniest of SCTV.
Uh, Bill, ya' hosehead, that ain't Rupe Holmes there, no sirree, that's Rockin' Mel Slurrup from Mel's Rockpile, pullin' a fast one on ya', eh?
Older viewers may recognize this as a parody of The Lou Gordon Program out of Detroit.
The skincap was the icing on the cake. I wonder if Chuck or Rupert ever commented on this skit?
You got any 'Larry Siegel'?
He was my fav.
SCTV vs Saturday Night Live! I prefer SCTV!
Chuck Mangione--- pure comedy gold!!!
Thanks for this.
"...like the kind of big fat red nose I'd like to flatten against your face!"...classic!
bill needle& tom snider they don't make em like that anymore!
I thought Bill showed some real acting chops in Maudlin's 11." Oh , YEAH !!!"
Well, that Honey Pie Traynor
Rupe, Rupe, Rupe, hey...😂
And I thought Joe Franklin kicked ass. Celebrities knew they made it when they appeared on Bill's show.
I read that Bill was Dave's alter ego
Better than Sean Hannity!
Well now I know where Bill O'Reilly got his inspiration...
I greatly enjoy Bill Needle.
Hopefully those impressionable kids won't hear Rupert's "Timothy" and turn into cannibals.
Those dark golds and browns scream early '80's.
We all hated that stupid hat Chuck wore
The Monsters of Easy Listening.

The Needler !!
Needle was ruthless. Made Mike Wallace look nice.
Attack the Stars!
Separated at birth - Bill Needle and Bill O'Reilly!
Hilarious! Rupert the Red-Nosed Reindeer!
He's the original Duke Silver/Ron Swanson
Bill Needle.........the for shadowing of The Bill O'rielly to come!!
was gonna say the same thing!!
+tom bruchal Not even close. Morton Downey, Jr. FTW.
Rupert the Reindeer! 🦌
My dad always found this skit funny
LOL! Hilarious!
This was funny...Pina Colada...lol
It's awesome that his right hand seems to be damaged
@Albertanator
That's pathetic.
Was Dave wearing a cast in this one? I notice that he never allowed his right hand to be seen!
Peter Maranci
Dave injured his hand on a Corvette steering wheel during the Walter Cronkite's Brain skit.
Knock your block off - lmao
...it’s just like Bill O’Reilly’s show.
Bill Needle kept making pointed comments.
acutally he should relistically do this to most if not all the crap in the states
This pre-dates The O'Reilly Factor by how many years??
Yeah and we got Trump now. I love humilating thee smug artist assholes
Hahaha
We need the days of sctv
Rupert the Reindeer.
Levy doing Neil Sedaka's voice a tad lower
Bill Needledick schryches again or something
more commercials than tv.
i think you're right. colbert is probably most similar to bill needle
If you like pina colada...
Ha ha ha. There should be a real TV show like this to put some of those conceited celebrities in their place.
Another show cut short due to annoying guests . Never antagonize Needle .
today it is Fox News' nighttime line-up.
My opinion ...... not funny .... (but I love SCTV ... go Bay Leafs!)
The Pina Colada song is still terrible. Timothy was much better.
Timeless comedy, yet why are there noodleheads who insist on spinning this narrative into the political field? That’s why today’s comedy smells like week old fish.
@Dasyati More like Joy Behar if you ask me.
I love when Bill Needle gets mad. This guy has issues. I’d love it if he’d interview Donald Trump.
