  • The main point of my setup for this video is an expression pedal for changing Meris Hedra pitch-shifting patterns.
External pedal is something that all guitar nerds keep in mind, but rarely use. This idea came to my mind when I thought about improving my volume swells technique.
Normally I would use one setting for bass layers and another setting for higher / melody layers. This needs two different presets in one or maybe even several pedals. The usage of an expression pedal can be a promising alternative.
The first thing I did I connected the Roland EV-5 control pedal to the Morningstar FX MC6 MK2 midi controller and programmed the pattern I needed. At the heel position it gives me -1 octave for fat bass sound and in the toe position the pitch rises to 1) +5, 2) +1 octave, 3) +1 octave and +5th.
Thus I use the expression pedal to alter pitch settings for different parts of a “song”. This approach can be applied to several pedals at one time if you need.
I’m still a bit disappointed with the Microcosm pedal. Though all delay pedals had synced tempo with midi Hologram Microcosm still lived its own life… Even if you think that this is the beginning of the beat Morningstar and alike pedals (Chase Bliss, for example) will think different. They have their own understanding of what the main beat is… The next time I will try constant MIDI TEMPO instead of MIDI TAP message - maybe it will help…
    Gear used:

Your music is as cool in Celsius as it is in Fahrenheit 😊 (or even in Kelvins).

I always enjoy your music! Also great to see you sharing what exactly is going on in your setup as well.
Strange to see the Microcosm is acting up? I have it synced perfectly.

Thanks! The issue with Microcosm and similar pedals like CBA Blooper is that they act not like a delay, but as a looper. They record a sample and then alter it in accordance with their function - speed it up for higher pitch or chop it into pieces for glitch effects... But they still refer to this sample they have recorded (even if they constantly rerecord it). Hense we have the beginning of this sample - the starting point or the main beat. This is where all the problems come from - the starting point. It can be solved by fitting your tempo (the main beat) to the main beat of the Microcosm, but you need to play for a whilw to do so. Or just try to be in time with the blinkiing led on the pedal... And with MIDI TAP LEDs of Meris, Strymon and Hologram doesn't blink together - there is some lag in this cycle...

how do you sync your pedals?

    • @jayvandenberghe4530
      @jayvandenberghe4530 9 месяцев назад +1

Mine is hooked up to a Deluge, and it took no real special effort to sync it (Deluge is master). But I don't use the looping section of the Microcosm in that scenario , so maybe that could be the issue?

I guess this is the answer - the Deluge that stands for Master clock and automatically matches the starting point of the Microcosm with it's own main beat. I didn't use MC's looper this time, this is just the way how MC treats anything it processes - as if it was a loop, a sample, something that has its star and end, not like buffer of any other delay

should try something as a Master clock... pretty sure that MC will behave OK if I use any DAW as a midi master clock

This is beautiful ... you really have the Hedra down. I've played with one some, and it seems like it would take some time to get the hang of. I realize that you use them all together but I'm also curious , out of the tools you're using, is there one or two that are your favorite?

Thanks, Jerry! Well I love all the pedals I have now - some more, some less. The most polished are Strymon pedals - best of the best! I guess my favorite (or most used) delay is Strymon Volante. I also love CBA Blooper for it's versatility and a lot of hidden possibilities you discover while playing.
