For people to say he didn’t have the voice when he grew up is killing me like have y’all not heard Seabreeze ?!!!! Tripping
Beautiful song omg❤❤
For real though....he had a kinda Nat King Cole quality to his adult voice. Very beautiful!
They preferred the high voice but then ended up liking Nat Cole. Frankie could've been like Nat
Frankie's grown singing voice sounded really good. What was wrong with those people? People grow up and their voice changes, it's call puberty.
Keshun Grantham The audience was hooked on the kid voice. It's sorta like when a actor gets type cast. Once type cast they can't get a job. Young Frankie's voice got type cast after he matured into a adult. Also drugs got in the way. Young Michael Jackson was really blessed after he became a adult. Frankie almost became our first Michael Jackson. Frankie was a icon , that left way to soon to evolve into a bigger icon.
Right, he sound a little like Nat King Cole , voice 😉
I agree Tasha Williams. Tht happen to Usher to. LA Reid didnt like his grown man voice either
In 'Days of Yore' in England, if a boy had a good voice (e.g., as in the Westminster Choir) they would CASTRATE him before puberty, so his voice would never change...Talk about hitting High C!
It was called drugs too
Frankie was really charismatic. So sad that his life was so short.
Frankie lymon big thanks
His voice as an older young man sounded good to me. I don't understand why they didn't want to develop him as a growing artist. That will never make sense.
I agree with you. He sounded real good. The music industry is the dirtiest.
What is an older young man?
@@Michelle-pn9xt his voice grew from a child to a deeper tone
The entertainment industry has no morals whatsoever!!
That just goes to show you how pedophilic the music industry is. Milked him for all he's worth as a child and tossed him out as a young adult.
Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers paved the way for groups like The Jackson 5 and later on, New Edition.
You said it!
Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers!! Such a beautiful sound, and their harmonizing,!!! Amazing!!!! Taking time to remember the joy their music brought to many. Thank you for this video.
Amen! I thought I was the only one who thought that way. If it were up to me, I'd make every Boyband/Girlband (UK) where they always create Groups and make them watch this documentary and see how bad his downfall was. He was also a major influence on Smokey Robinson, and Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes. In 1987 Jackie Collins (RIP) did a Book called Rock Star about Bobby Mondella who went from being a Black Country & Western Singer who lived in Nashville, TN, and when his voice "Changed" he was dropped like a Hot Potato. He also found out that although he got $5000.00 it wasn't the full amount he should have gotten. He "Signed" away his Songs which meant that he gets no Royalties. Things got so bad that he ended up working as a Men's Room Attendant at a Popular New York Nightclub and although he made a Comeback he had to learn to be so careful.
That is so true.
He was also an influence on a young Bob Marley in the early to mid 60’s
This docu came out when VCRs first came out. I remember recording it and watching it several times. It would depress me but I'm glad to see so many young people are into him.
I still have my Teenagers 45’s - and play them - with tears in my eyes for these guys who helped America come to terms with these gifts from God.
I feel like they should make a another about him cause the other one they made was more about the women in his life
Exactly and they made Frankie look like a grown man in the film he was like 13 when they were talking about him inaccurate
Boot Reeves yeah, like his brothers, mom, everything was left out, it was just about 3 women
Hell yeah smh but it wont be another one
harborboi why not? When I get older imma make one before I die!
Young Genius good luck with that
Today, I can understand why Black artist learn a lot about the recording business now. A lot of Black artist are working together now. That's beautiful! !
Thank you! I still get so angry when I'm thinking about how ripped off they got. They wrote so many songs and sang them and in the end they didn't get a single penny out of them
Well they won the rights back in the early nineties which is why on some the CD credits you will see Merchant-Santiago. However, Emira Eagle whatever her name is now that she has remarried won the rights back to Lymon. Just screwed up...
Jeremy Almquist exactly.. but anyway thanks for uploading, looking forward to more uploads in the future! :)
Jeremy Almquist Notice they won the rights after Morris Levy died.
theeternalwisdom Morris Levy was mobbed up because of gambling debts. That’s why he made sure of taking writing credits falsely to receive royalties. I’m sure Frankie and The Teenagers aren’t the only ones getting sold out by this fool.
His grown man voice is beautiful!! They were crazy!
and ignorant and greedy
Frankie Lymon had an amazing voice, and his singing was filled with so much joy! It's a shame that no one was looking out for him and the Teenagers because they should have been set for life with all the money they earned from their many hits. The unscrupulous thieves in the recording industry who stole their money are soulless scoundrels.
Bichon Lover I can never understand why they never got the credit they deserved some people in this music industry are greedy and still to this day
He was not an accountant,or mathematician, not an administer, his gift was his singing voice.
I was in the army with frank one of the funniest guys in the world he was great On the down side it was the beginning of a life time battle with herion! 28 years clean last July 4th!
How he was?
Congratulations!
It wasn't the beginning there
U have any stories ?
So sad for Frankie, Lorenz Tate did an excellent portrayal of him in the movie.
Lorenz Tate d-zerved an OSCAR , white privlijj & mediocrity attitz wurst!!!!!
It was a good movie, but Lorenz didn't sell me as Frankie.
@@Chloeceegaming..7253 Why's that? Was it because he looked too old to play the young Frankie? Who would you have chosen instead? 😏
@@Chloeceegaming..7253 Agreed ... they should have focused on his exploitation - not the marriages and Larenz Tate looked far too old
Yes, he did it like a boss. Larenze Tate
Frankie lymon was cute and they chose the best choice to portray frankie lymon in the movie why do fools fall in love lorenz tate ❤
He was too old to play prepubescent Frankie he would've been perfect as the older Frankie.
Cute?...Gary Coleman would have been way better a choice🤣
@@catspaw3092 🤣 Yes and that one scene dancing atop boxes 📦 made his feet look Huge🤣 always laugh at that scene
He needs another movie. Why Do Fools Fall in Love wasn't a good depiction? The movie was mostly about his relationships. Frankie Lymon needs a cradle to the grave type of movie. His story was way more sadder.
cute??? Larenz Tate was cute.
He had a beautiful voice as an adult.
Frankie started the "Kiddie Sound" and was one of the most gifted singers of his time. Truly a tragic life he lead in the end. It was a pity that they never got the monies for their efforts and three of them died too early in their lives. Been a fan of the Teenagers for over five decades and still miss them. Had the opportunity to meet Jimmy Merchant at an intimate oldies show on Long Island back in the middle 90's. Thanks to Bobby J for keeping the group going along with Lewis Lymon.
doowoptm IT WAS HIS STAGE PRESENCE AND SHOWMANSHIP! He had " IT "!
I am a former graduate of Edward Stitt Junior High School class of 1982. I use to always sing in the hallways knowingly the school had an unique history of talent flowing through it.
Anything about Frankie Lymon makes me sad RIP Frankie 2024 I still watch his movie one of my favorites
Yea
That manager did them dirty, such phenomenal talent its a shame they were robbed and Frankie died poor
He didn't die poor, really, think about that, he's still being spoken about. Alsa that's happens much. Elvis was famous, wealthy but died poor really, his demise was not so grandious, or was it?
@@MariaMaria-wv1sy YOu have NO understanding of the original comment. Thats obvious. The man died broke. It doesn't matter how many people STILL speak aboout him, is he here to hear them???? Kindly have a seat.
@@youtoldpeopleawomanhadalds3109 Amen!
This was my first time hearing Diana Ross’ version of “Why Do Fool’s Fall In Love” and it sounds horrible 😭😭😭 omg
Yes! Messed his song all up🙄
Sorry dear, Diana Ross's version of that song Only improved it.
Lmaaaaoooooo
sounds great
Both versions were great to me
I love Frankie Lymon so much, the way his life turned out is so sad, R.I.P❤️
He was battling a drug addiction at 17.. Basically over the course of 4 years.. Lordt his childhood was taken
More like battling since 13yo
NO since he was 12
OG Honey heyyyyy
No since he was 15
No he started at 15
I want a new frankie lymon movie
YES! Oh god yes. It HAS to be done correctly. Not that "based on a true story" BS that came from Warner Bros.
Jeremy Almquist yea I was so disappointed to see frankie lymon presented as a junkie on that movie..at least go into detail of his life
TEKASHI 6IX9INE ABSOLUTELY DEFINITELY. This time make the movie about Frankie Lymon.
Make it happen!
I agree, they can do much better, show how the group was cheated, and shine a light on those cockroaches they call "managers" How about it Hollywood? Spike Lee, Tyler Perry are just a couple of film makers that can make it happen
I have to say L. Tate (actor) did an EXCELLENT job playing the late great Frankie Lymon in the motion picture "why do fools fall in love" Oscar worthy in my opinion.
It was the summer of 96 when I saw the movie ,"why do fools fall in love" and was introduced to one of my favorite entertainers Frankie lymon.Rip
ummmm it didn't come our until 98
Watching this makes me feel sad and mad😞
Frankie Lymon an amazing part of American history
Whoever disliked should be ashamed
TEKASHI 6IX9INE And they should be beaten. LOL
TEKASHI 6IX9INE remind you of Bobby Brown during don't be cruel era about.
This group has a lot of Talent! I wish they stayed together.
They had to break them apart smh so sad ...
Wow they used those kids for a year or two and sent them on their way. Not before stealing everything they wrote and earned. To me Frankie's voice sounded better with age, not as high but the deepening added character. A darker Nat King Cole style.Honestly, the other members of the group weren't as skilled as him vocally. They were equal when it came to the showmanship during performing but that's about it. Management is really to blame. They tried to make him solo too soon. They didn't develop his talent at all or the brand. Can you imagine if he was born a little later and Berry Gordy and Motown had signed them? Such a sad ending to a promising start.
Leki Jolo he would’ve stills used heroin
Age old story of the music business. Find talent, exploit and keep that talent indebted to you by robbing them blind then dropping them when you can't rob them anymore.

He had an amazing adult voice ..gosh ..what an injustice...😞💙 RIP Franky ..
Lord they didn’t give Frankie a set of flippers for his comeback 😩. Loved his adult voice! So sad. 26 years old GONE!
Near the end of this doc its heartbreaking to see Frankie as an adult made to lip-synch to his original recording of Why Do Fools....on that TV show. How crushing that must have been for him
It was Hollywood A Go Go. It was next to The Dick Clark Saturday Night Beechnut Show one of the last times he appeared on TV. Also in her 1987 Best Seller Rock Star Jackie Collins (RIP) did a character named Bobby Mondella who went from being a Black Teen Country Singer and was dropped when his voice changed. At 16 he couldn't get a Job because he didn't have any skills for a bit, but he ended up working as a Men's Room Attendant. He found out to his horror he "Signed" the rights to all of this songs which meant he didn't get any Future Royalties.
I do recall this...especially when you hear his singing voice after puberty struck. Puberty & drugs killed Frankie. What also killed him was no adult representation (i.e. lawyers, manager) that looked out for HIM!! Don't sell your Masters!!!You should watch a show called "The Will: Family Secrets Revealed".📺 It also talked about Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers as well. 🎶🎤🎵To Messrs. Merchant & Santiago thanks for the song & sorry you were ripped off TWICE $$ 🎶🎤🎵 #travesty. RIP to Frankie & the two other teenagers. Sing your song in Heaven. 🙏 #tragedy
Puberty did nothing to him
thats such b.s. this group wrote soo many amazing songs! songs that til this day are still being played in commercials, movies, TV ect. and those vultures are making millions off of them, but the people who wrote them and performed them aren't ever going to get one dime!! moral to the story: DON'T SELL UR MASTER RECORDINGS!
Tina Davies I fully agree!! He should also have had ADULT representation (i.e. lawyer, accountant) to HELP HIM, not be
AGAINST HIM! #tragic
How tall was he and the same thing Prince ,Mj ,& soo many others were saying dont sell your master recordings .
Tina Davies Amen.!!! Those master recordings are the musicians social security. Those recordings are their children. PRINCE said it best. Also beware of signing contracts . That's where it gets tricky and gets them ripped off in the long run of it all. Little Frankie Lymon didn't know all the ends and outs back then. He needed a smart adult that cared about his well being to help him . But unfortunately he had greedy vultures conning him. PRINCE said , the first 3 letters in the word contract is con. SAD BUT TRUE.
A lot of the times that forfeiture of ownership is written into contracts. Music business was and in some cases still is so dirty. Especially back in those days, managers, record companies the list goes on, we're all in the artist pockets.
Its not as easy as it seems. Many of The Kids on those days didn't know about The Business Side. If it were up to me, eveyr up and coming Boy Band should watch this Documentary. So many folks have done their version of this Song from Diana Ross during her RCA Years as well as The Beach Boys as Filler to fulfill a Album Contract to fulfill a Album requirement of so many songs on an Album. and let's not forget it was featured in American Graffiti that was once called one of the 50 Best Movies of al time. I remember watching a commercial for a Phone Company and they used a Song called "Don't Hang Up" I thought it was created especially for the Commercial, it wasn't until much later did I realize that it was recorded by the Orlons. What happened to The Teenagers in terms of Songwriting Theft and Fraud happened to alot of other folks. For Example, look at Gladys Horton she Co-Wrote Please Mr. Postman that has been covered by a veritable Who's Who. The Beatles in the early days of their Career who were heavily influenced by Motown whose early tracks were also featured on the UK Series Call The Midwife most notably "Money" as well as Buttered Popcorn which was the only Song that Florence Ballard Of The Supremes Sang Lead on. In later Years Please Mr. Postman was covered by The Carpenters and when there was a Tribute Show to The Carpenters in the UK, The Group The Saturdays a Girl Group did their version not realizing it was a Marvelettes Song. It is so sad. I said this on another Channel, they can teach you everything how to be in a Boy Band/Girl Group but they never teach you how to move on when the fame ends.
He sounded like Frank Sinatra when his voice changed. It's a shame he was set up for failure like that.
Monila Ninetynine it was good...I don't understand.
Selease Rodriguez So sad they had him lip syncing to his prepubescent voice. They wanted to infantalize him. Very sad.
Monila Ninetynine So why did they have him lip syncing too his old songs as a kid? When his adult songs sounded good too? I completely don't understand
lonewolf261000 Nobody was familiar with his adult voice, so they tried to continue with what people would recognize, which was his teenybopper voice.
Monila Ninetynine oh ok now i understand. It's a bit disturbing and sad but I understand. Poor Guy
I hate to hear great artists where taken advantage. Hope Karma kept tabs.
Alex Peace sadly it happened all the time. I think it changed in the 2000s . Entertainers became more aware and wiser
@Anthony Gonzalez Yep. Did you ever see The Boy Band Con with Lance Bass. What he, The Backstreet Boys, Aaron Carter and all of these other wannabes was horrible. Also you should check out The Big Reunion that showed the Boyband/Girlbands had it just as bad some were worse off "after" their fame than before their fame.
He was so Good God Wanted Him To Sing For Him in Person

wow thanks for this upload!! I've been searching for some new Frankie documentaries and stories! I'm glad I finally found one!
I don't like certain comments made at the end of this video about his voice. They made it seem as if his voice was completely shot as an adult. Frankie's voice was different and still sounded great. His voice, life, and career just needed a little guidance. #RIPFrankieTheGreat
Long Live Frankie Lymon the king Of Doo Wop
Excellent comment
The JACKSON FIVE of The Fifties !!!
Facts. Frankie Lymon was basically Michael Jackson’s predecessor.
its too bad no one wanted him when he went through puberty, frankie lymon had AN AMAZING voice, i mean a blend of frank sinatra and nat king cole as a deep tenor and baritone, god what a waste of pure talent and skill ;-(
Poor Baby! By the Looks of MANY MUCH OLDER MALES Surrounding Him, NO telling WHO Turned him Out. Such a Talented Youngster. May God Rest His Soul, In Peace.👑
10:31 I used to watch this small clip of Fortunate Fellow over and over. At the time, I didn't have the Mister Rock 'n' Roll film yet. I couldn't wait to see the whole performance!
Jocelyn Carter: Nice video. Hollywood should make another movie about him. This movie should be about him struggling after he lost his fame. What did he do besides the drugs? I didn't know Frankie had children! That should be explore also. Who were the mothers? I think that subject should be explore also.
This is a awesome video
Heartbreaking to watch.

Yup👍 being 27 I like it
Franky was tha man.
Solid real talent
That particular genre was dying as he aged.
They coulda started producing or something hell..
Right Frankie could've started singing r&b eventually
He could've gone on to be a great songwriter producer etc. Such a shame.
Justice for Frankie Lymon!
Thanks for providing this. Always liked Frankie's music.
Divide and conquer. Reality is that as great as their individual voices were they needed each other both musically and emotionally. The before and after the breakup music is our witness to this rip off of poor, young men who are Black and Brown. It has only become worse with drugs and prison and mis-education but the results are the same as with MJ, Whitney, Prince.
fool
Spot on Sista!
Yes man say the truth
SHAME on the managers that stole, ripped off and worse broke the spirits of these great artists, their hell is coming.

Wow, it's crazy how everybody copied them. Even crazier how they robbed them. Smh R.I.P Frankie
He was America's first black Pop music teenage star.
Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers were America's 1st black teenage idols who crossed over during the Doo Wop/ Rock & Roll era. Their story is tragic because it's evident that they were poorly mismanaged by their managers, the record company ,and their lawyers. These kids when they first got into show business knew nothing about the legal side of the business nor did their parents. You also have to keep in mind the time period. These were black and latino boys who formed a group when the world was segregated . Had they been an all white group I do not believe that they would have experienced the kind of hardships they had. Very few blacks had control of their masters. Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke did own theirs. The story of Frankie Lymon is exactly what happened to New Edition & so many other minorities. Even Prince before he died he fought hard to get control of his music from Warner Brothers & MJ also had his issues with Sony Records. In the era of Frankie Lymon most of the record companies were owned by Jews or Italians & their was a lot of prejudice going on in the industry. None of those boys should have died broke. Their money went to the record companies, promotors, and managers. Many of these entertainers did not want to be on drugs they were depressed and it's sad that they did not have the right people in their circle to help them out. They all were taken advantaged of. And it's still going on in this industry. They need to have better laws to protect young entertainers from these industry theives.

@Makayla Aniya reelz autopsy on Frankie lymon
Frankie Lymon wrote "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" himself without any collaboration, Morris Levy added his own name to the composer credits, and another name, I believe Waymon Glascoe(a name Levy may have made up) in order to skim two-thirds of the composer royalties off Lymon where they should've gone 100% to Lymon.
Not true Frankie and Herman Santiago wrote the song based off a poem someone girlfriend wrote them.
@@NotJustMommyTime Yours is the untrue claim. Frankie Lymon came up with the song himself. It's only because Frankie Lymon was Afro-American that Morris Levi and his "phantom collaborator", Waymon Glasco's names were added to cheat Frankie out of his rightful royalties, and for that same reason that you try to take the credit away from Frankie Lymon as well. Had Frankie Lymon been white, I suspect Levi would still have pulled the same royalty theft stunt against Lymon because he was in his early teens, but I doubt you'd have come up with these bogus identities of Frankie and Herman Santiago had Frankie Lymon been white.
@@neilforbes416 Herman and the teenagers said this themselves so what are you talking about
@@NotJustMommyTime The copyright on the song rightly belongs solely to Frankie Lymon, or his estate. Roulette Records can only claim mechanical copyright on the actual recording. I will concede *only* one point, and *ONLY* if it's correct, which I *strongly* doubt, and that is if Frankie used the name "Lymon" as a pseudonym and had his brother, Herman in his backing group.
@@neilforbes416 on the original record it names lymon, Santiago, and another group member as the writers. After Frankie went solo they took the other names off. The band members sued for the rights and won, but it was reversed in an appeal because it had been over 30 years.
Sad to see the remaining members of the Teenagers taking credits of 'Why Do Fools Fall in Love' years after Frankie's death. It explains the story Lymon, people taking advantage of him, even in death.
Not really taking advantage if they helped him write the song..? Frankie kind of took advantage of them by not giving them credits like they deserved.
The title song is one I remember as the B-side to The Jimmy Castor Bunch's 1972 novelty hit, "Troglodyte(Cave Man)". I had no idea that Frankie Lymon did it first.
What a great video with so many very intelligent interviews.
The most blessed people have a heartbreaking ending.
Ripping Black singers off was a nasty, common practice n that era. Artists wrote the songs, then the managers & producers stamped THEIR names on it to collect royalties. Business savvy artists like Ray Charles and James Brown was having NONE of that. Thx 4 the upload.
Leslie Warnell and Ray Charles was blind...I love that he was not playing NO games 🥰🥰🥰
A lot of white performers were also taken advantage of. Not just young black performers. Poor management as well as unscrupulous people telling them which way to take their talent. Different stages and casinos etc. Terrible.
His brother look just like him
They do not look alike at all. His brother has a wide nose. He did not. They have different face shapes. His brother has a larger mouth and full lips. His mouth was smaller. Their were not the same size. How do they look alike??? His brother's face is more square at the top. His face was nothing like that.
The worst thing a parent can do is let their child get in the entertainment industry. Children are not here to be USED for our entertainment
No performer at the time got fair deal mabey Elvis and that was it cause he was a white southern boy also check out Cadillac records they go into performers not having control or ownership of their work for those of who saw that movie it feels good not to have a daddy was said by howling wolf
