    Frankie's grown singing voice sounded really good. What was wrong with those people? People grow up and their voice changes, it's call puberty.

      Keshun Grantham The audience was hooked on the kid voice. It's sorta like when a actor gets type cast. Once type cast they can't get a job. Young Frankie's voice got type cast after he matured into a adult. Also drugs got in the way. Young Michael Jackson was really blessed after he became a adult. Frankie almost became our first Michael Jackson. Frankie was a icon , that left way to soon to evolve into a bigger icon.

      In 'Days of Yore' in England, if a boy had a good voice (e.g., as in the Westminster Choir) they would CASTRATE him before puberty, so his voice would never change...Talk about hitting High C!

      Amen! I thought I was the only one who thought that way. If it were up to me, I'd make every Boyband/Girlband (UK) where they always create Groups and make them watch this documentary and see how bad his downfall was. He was also a major influence on Smokey Robinson, and Ronnie Spector of The Ronettes. In 1987 Jackie Collins (RIP) did a Book called Rock Star about Bobby Mondella who went from being a Black Country & Western Singer who lived in Nashville, TN, and when his voice "Changed" he was dropped like a Hot Potato. He also found out that although he got $5000.00 it wasn't the full amount he should have gotten. He "Signed" away his Songs which meant that he gets no Royalties. Things got so bad that he ended up working as a Men's Room Attendant at a Popular New York Nightclub and although he made a Comeback he had to learn to be so careful.

    Frankie started the "Kiddie Sound" and was one of the most gifted singers of his time. Truly a tragic life he lead in the end. It was a pity that they never got the monies for their efforts and three of them died too early in their lives. Been a fan of the Teenagers for over five decades and still miss them. Had the opportunity to meet Jimmy Merchant at an intimate oldies show on Long Island back in the middle 90's. Thanks to Bobby J for keeping the group going along with Lewis Lymon.

    Wow they used those kids for a year or two and sent them on their way. Not before stealing everything they wrote and earned. To me Frankie's voice sounded better with age, not as high but the deepening added character. A darker Nat King Cole style.Honestly, the other members of the group weren't as skilled as him vocally. They were equal when it came to the showmanship during performing but that's about it. Management is really to blame. They tried to make him solo too soon. They didn't develop his talent at all or the brand.Can you imagine if he was born a little later and Berry Gordy and Motown had signed them? Such a sad ending to a promising start.

      Tina Davies Amen.!!! Those master recordings are the musicians social security. Those recordings are their children. PRINCE said it best. Also beware of signing contracts . That's where it gets tricky and gets them ripped off in the long run of it all. Little Frankie Lymon didn't know all the ends and outs back then. He needed a smart adult that cared about his well being to help him . But unfortunately he had greedy vultures conning him. PRINCE said , the first 3 letters in the word contract is con. SAD BUT TRUE.

      A lot of the times that forfeiture of ownership is written into contracts. Music business was and in some cases still is so dirty. Especially back in those days, managers, record companies the list goes on, we're all in the artist pockets.

    • @laminage

      Its not as easy as it seems. Many of The Kids on those days didn't know about The Business Side. If it were up to me, eveyr up and coming Boy Band should watch this Documentary. So many folks have done their version of this Song from Diana Ross during her RCA Years as well as The Beach Boys as Filler to fulfill a Album Contract to fulfill a Album requirement of so many songs on an Album. and let's not forget it was featured in American Graffiti that was once called one of the 50 Best Movies of al time. I remember watching a commercial for a Phone Company and they used a Song called "Don't Hang Up" I thought it was created especially for the Commercial, it wasn't until much later did I realize that it was recorded by the Orlons. What happened to The Teenagers in terms of Songwriting Theft and Fraud happened to alot of other folks. For Example, look at Gladys Horton she Co-Wrote Please Mr. Postman that has been covered by a veritable Who's Who. The Beatles in the early days of their Career who were heavily influenced by Motown whose early tracks were also featured on the UK Series Call The Midwife most notably "Money" as well as Buttered Popcorn which was the only Song that Florence Ballard Of The Supremes Sang Lead on. In later Years Please Mr. Postman was covered by The Carpenters and when there was a Tribute Show to The Carpenters in the UK, The Group The Saturdays a Girl Group did their version not realizing it was a Marvelettes Song. It is so sad. I said this on another Channel, they can teach you everything how to be in a Boy Band/Girl Group but they never teach you how to move on when the fame ends.

    Divide and conquer. Reality is that as great as their individual voices were they needed each other both musically and emotionally. The before and after the breakup music is our witness to this rip off of poor, young men who are Black and Brown. It has only become worse with drugs and prison and mis-education but the results are the same as with MJ, Whitney, Prince.

  • @yvonnestewart8590
    @yvonnestewart8590 6 лет назад +16

    Frankie Lymon & The Teenagers were America's 1st black teenage idols who crossed over during the Doo Wop/ Rock & Roll era. Their story is tragic because it's evident that they were poorly mismanaged by their managers, the record company ,and their lawyers. These kids when they first got into show business knew nothing about the legal side of the business nor did their parents. You also have to keep in mind the time period. These were black and latino boys who formed a group when the world was segregated . Had they been an all white group I do not believe that they would have experienced the kind of hardships they had. Very few blacks had control of their masters. Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke did own theirs. The story of Frankie Lymon is exactly what happened to New Edition & so many other minorities. Even Prince before he died he fought hard to get control of his music from Warner Brothers & MJ also had his issues with Sony Records. In the era of Frankie Lymon most of the record companies were owned by Jews or Italians & their was a lot of prejudice going on in the industry. None of those boys should have died broke. Their money went to the record companies, promotors, and managers. Many of these entertainers did not want to be on drugs they were depressed and it's sad that they did not have the right people in their circle to help them out. They all were taken advantaged of. And it's still going on in this industry. They need to have better laws to protect young entertainers from these industry theives.

    Frankie Lymon wrote "Why Do Fools Fall In Love" himself without any collaboration, Morris Levy added his own name to the composer credits, and another name, I believe Waymon Glascoe(a name Levy may have made up) in order to skim two-thirds of the composer royalties off Lymon where they should've gone 100% to Lymon.

      @@NotJustMommyTime Yours is the untrue claim. Frankie Lymon came up with the song himself. It's only because Frankie Lymon was Afro-American that Morris Levi and his "phantom collaborator", Waymon Glasco's names were added to cheat Frankie out of his rightful royalties, and for that same reason that you try to take the credit away from Frankie Lymon as well. Had Frankie Lymon been white, I suspect Levi would still have pulled the same royalty theft stunt against Lymon because he was in his early teens, but I doubt you'd have come up with these bogus identities of Frankie and Herman Santiago had Frankie Lymon been white.
