    Prince of Persia's one of those rare series that exudes quality, consideration, and charm. It's rough to see something that started, or rather, was rebooted from an older game lose fragments of itself over time. Sometimes those fragments rooted out in new directions that were, on the whole, worthwhile. Sometimes those fragments burned up. Stay awhile and listen to another snide game critic have a go with an old favorite.

    Let's not forget how PoP 08's true ending has you undo everything you've spent the entire game trying to to do and doom the world you just purified just to get your gf back despite the fact that she didn't want you to and the game ends with the Prince and Elika's immediate death

    • @Arik-isharshu
      @Arik-isharshu 2 года назад +68

      Pretty sure it doesn't end with their immediate death, both the PlayStation-exclusive DLC and the Fallen King DS game take place after the end of PoP2008 afaik
      But ye he does kinda undo the seal just to get his gf back doesn't he

      Wasn't the real ending locked behind dlc?

    • @piotrtokarz4764
      @piotrtokarz4764 2 года назад +47

      The true ending was locked behind DLC only available for console players, and basically it goes like this: ahriman is in a process of escaping, prince and elika are hiding in some previously inaccesible castle, and elika says that she have to go to look for her people, then flies off the balcony leaving prince alone.
      For me its clear that they wanted to do sequel to that, because both endings are massive cliffhangers, but I guess It didnt sell good enough.
      And by the way, im still mad as fuck that I could not experience DLC myself, just because I dont own the console. Such a shitty move.

    • @Arik-isharshu
      @Arik-isharshu 2 года назад +8

      afaik the DLC was supposed to come to PC too but ppl were so pissed off at its ending on console that Ubisoft decided they're just gonna pretend it never happened

      @@piotrtokarz4764 Ahriman's prison already slowly failing is not something they added with the dlc but it is already present in the original ending. If you listen to Ahriman's creepy whispers as you go to destroy the 4 trees to resurrect Elika Ahriman says outright his prison is failing and he will be free eventually no matter what. It's just quite vague and imo they should have given more hints throughout the game. Resurrecting Elika always was the good ending as it was always obvious to me her powers and first resurrection came from Ormazd and not actually Ahriman, as Ahriman is only ever shown to corrupt throughout the game, so her being alive again means theres still hope to stop Ahriman. It is such a shame a sequel never happened 😞

    PoP2008 is such a beautiful game. Having a game in the series focused on platforming would be fine, and even in the first couple of hours I didn't mind that, it felt like great game to kick back and relax, even if the story is about stopping the apocalypse. But then those goddamn collectibles showed up and I was like "Nope! Not happening!". Seriously I'm fine with shorter game if it's focused in it's execution, but adding 5 billion of useless shiny objects to pick up everywhere is not fun or challenging. You just adding busy work. At least don't make it your whole gameplay loop.

    I have fond memories of PoP 08. I was still lagging behind in the old gen when my friends got a new hd tv and the hot new xbox 360 with their first game being PoP 08 because they were big fans of SoT. Me being a platformer nut from the ps2 era I was absolutely enthralled by it.
    There was nothing else quite like it and it still holds a mysterious and fantastical part in my memory. When you're young and seeing such a massive graphical upgrade, it's like magic for the first time. I think that's why PoP08 was so unique and fresh.

    I disagree with PoP 2008 being edgeless in a pursuit to be mainstream in comparison with the past trilogy. Compare with what was mainstream at both timeframes. In
    2003-2005 the triple A games were the edgy teen grungy slop. Even mascot platformers went through that.
    PoP 2008 didn't connected to anyone for being a different artistic vision during a period where Ubisoft tried to push more conceptual and artistic looking games for a cycle. In 2008 we had MGS4, Fallout 3, GTA4, Gears of Wars. That's what Triple A looked like. PoP was a push against that general aesthetic and tone, but didn't worked.

    Im also completely surprised the POP hasnt had a modded community behind it. Even Thief has a community made game called "The Dark Mod" which puts Thief mechanics in a new engine, using player made maps. POP needs something like this, Warrior within combat in sands of time. or even just updated engine with new maps.

    POP 2008 was my first HD game on our newly built PC.
    At the time I wasn't very good with games or timings, so this game was helluva lot accessible. I used to struggle on getting timing right for the ring-handle parts.

    You never had to shuffle around pillars in Warrior Within at least (the one I played the most) you could input an immediate jump there too, but I'd be lying to you if I didn't say I jumped to my death multiple times trying to do that because the direction input relative to the prince never made sense at least for my 15-16 year old self. So it might as well not be there haha.

      I can confirm That it was in sands of time as well. There's actually cool time saving interactions like this for most platforming action through out the trilogy.
      which I think is nest. In that it creates this cool learning curve where the first time through a platforming section will have you trying to figure out where to go and how to avoid traps, making it feel more like a kinda movement puzzle. But after you get used to the system and know where to go you can smoothly flow through the environment without ever having to stop.
      Even if yes, figuring out the direction it wanted you to push on the pillers was always a pain.

    For me, 08's point was traversing the beautiful land, seeing the sights - I loved the art style, so I was okay with the penalty being slight inconvenience, since challenge wasn't the point for me. So at the time I thought it was a cool temporary departure from the series' typical tone, even though I enjoyed that before to. I thought it was cool they decided to randomly take such a chance and take such a wild departure from the previous entries.

    I LOVED this game. I hate collectibles in most games, but here I enjoyed it because it was almost a puzzle in itself figuring out how to get some of them. And the fluidity of swinging/running/jumping to reach all those was SO fun to watch play out. This is one game that really opened me up to art and graphics playing a bigger role in games. It’s still on my favorites list, whereas I could never get into any of the other PoP games, which frustrates me too much at the time.

    Man I really loved Prince of Persia 2008. I think it didn't do too well because it was so different from the Sands of Time games which everyone loved. I played the SoT trilogy too before playing the 2008 game but I never really compared it with the old games. I thought it was dumb. Before playing the SoT trilogy I played the OG PoP 1 and 2 as a kid. It's so wildly different from the 3D games it's not even funny. So, the idea of the 2008 reboot being different from the old SoT trilogy was not a new concept for me. I mostly welcomed the differences in the reboot and enjoyed it for what it was. My favorite aspect was obviously the banter between the Prince and Elika and the beautiful world. The aesthetics reminds me of Frutiger Aero. I miss that era so much.
    That game was so unique and took such huge risks, not all of them paying off. It'd be insane to see a reboot like this of an established franchise nowadays. Sadly, it didn't work out and we'll probably never see a continuation of that story. It sucks because it feels like I'm only one of the few people who like this game as most people only talk about SoT trilogy (as they should since those games were great too). PoP 2008 was a gem and I wish it got a worthy sequel that was just as beautiful and unique.

    My first PoP was SoT but one of my all time fav games is 08 PoP. I remember getting it as an 8 or 9 year old completing all of this and falling in love with the style, the movement, all of that.
    Recently after 14 YEARS ( I CANT BELIVE HOW OLD THIS GAME IS) I decided to replay it, and see If it still holds up, and is as good as I remember, and I got to say It is. I still love the graphics, the art, the music is fenomenal, and combat is great . Im not afraid to say it, I think the combat is really really nice. If you know how to chaim the attacs, you can perform really wonderfully looking aerial combos that never get old for me. Platforming is pretty easy, but so fluid and nice feeling.
    Im not saying this game is perfect because it has its flaws for sure. Bosses were unique, and I really like the design, but yeah fighting them over and over and over again can get a bit repetetive and boring. I didn't hate the collectibles, but I see a lot of people telling that they couldn;t be bothered collecting seeds, and never finishing the game, combat with normal enemies is pretty ,, meh" because u can one kit KO them when close to the ledge, mixing of vocals is so horribly bad and inconsistant I'm shocked you havent spoke a word about it. Some dialogs sound normal, they are mixed good as can be expected from a product made by a multi-milion dollars company, but some of them are so quiet, you wouldn't be able to hear what they're saying if subtitles weren't there.
    And the ending, probably the worst thing about the game. If you are PC player like me, you could not get true ( still bad and ending with an cliffhanger) ending. In the non dlc ending it made me confused as hell why did I just UNDO all my progress. The funny thing is, I discovered DLC ending 14 years after completing the game. I really dont know why pc could not get the dlc. The true ending was clearly made in a way so they can make a sequel because nothing is answered, elika and prince split apart and ariman is free.
    Im a huge fan of 08 PoP, and Im still waiting for sequel that will probably never arrive, but remake/remaster of SoT gives me a little bit of hope that someone will notice 08 game. Maybe if they didn't call it Prince of Persia, and just made completly new franchise out of it, it would succeed. Im really surprised how many people like 08 PoP, and how much they enjoied it long time ago.
    If you have never played 08 Pop I strongly advice doing so. Forget about Prince of Persia name, all the reviews and just go for it, the style and feel of this game is amazing and didnt aged a bit since 2008.

    PoP 2008 has the same problem with the Assasin's Creed 1,having compulsory collectibles/mini games in order to lenghten the game time... Look at the Assassin's Creed 2 solving that problem...
    On to the combat mechanics, you have to compare it to the 1st PoP game that came out in the 90's. Especially 6th level boss, 8th level first enemy(I guess it was the 8th level) and the Vizier combat at the end of the 12th level. I loved the combat mechanics, since it gave that 1on1 sword clash back and forth nostalgia.

    I used to hate on PoP08, it wasn't my beloved sand-trilogy, and I can't get my head around why we needed a game with the title that isn't related to the main story at all. Now I playing trough them again after years, and the Forgotten sands for the first time. I can say with confidence, after playing that shit of a game, I no longer hate Pop08. Yes, it isn't a sand trilogy game, yes, I still don't understand, why they didn't tie it to the original Prince, there was ways to do that and make it canon, the sands were destroyed, but it isn't meant that the prince can't go on other magical journies. But the game is a marvelous one in it's own, if I don't think of it as a Prince of Persia game, I can see why people loved it and maybe I start to love it too.

    Gaming industry was changing big time by the time the forgotten sands came out and maybe that's why the whole franchise just didn't get enough attention. Man 2008 title is such a different and beautiful game in the series. Now I am once again so thirsty for these 10-12 hours campaigns

    PoP 08 is divisive for me. It's a return to form for the old 2d games with one on one combat, platforming first. But you can't die which ruins a lot of the tones, but it keeps the mysterious swashbuckling feel of that 2d game and the colorful nature it wanted to have. But Two Thrones exists and it was genuinely so good that going back to that style just felt strange. idk, I still have my PS3 copy and a GOG copy so I revisit it every once in a while.

    I love the Pop trilogy from the ps2 era but I really do have a soft spot for the 2008 PoP as well, it was different but had a nice self-contained story and it was clear there was a lot of effort put into the art and style of the game.

    I don't think I have heard anyone speak better than Bash.
    Don't know if it is just me or for anyone else, but...
    Bash just has some quality that doesn't allow me to listen to him in the background, I'm compelled(positively) to pay my full attention to get the most of his video.

    You forget to mention - for PoP 2008 there was a console-locked/exclusive region-locked (yes, even that) Real Ending DLC (Just like in "Asura Wrath" game), and also PoP: The Fallen King for Nintendo DS (Yes, it is canonical game. Game is canon for PoP 2008, and takes place - AFTER true ending DLC of PoP 2008).

    I wasn't big on PoP 2008. The Light Seed collection can only be started once you've "cleared" an area. So it's pretty shameless as far as padding the playtime. The four bonus powers are also just functional warp points except for 1 that actually enhances your basic platforming ability. I also remember being annoyed at the game's True Ending DLC that proposes a happier conclusion to the one you normally get. Combat is indeed pretty dull, but it's thankfully infrequent. My only gripe being the over-reliance on QTEs. PoP 2008 did indeed release in the year 2008, you see.

    I wonder why people say the trilogy platforming isn't as smooth as the later entries. They always use the example of the pillar jump... yet the trilogy has the same mechanic. You just have to hold the direction you want to jump and press jump. This has made pillar jumps become super smooth.

    Not gonna lie, I really liked PoP 2008. Yea, it's got rough edges but I think it would have been great if it got a sequel. It is really unique and would have been a masterpiece if it was expanded upon.
