FULL SERIES SPOILERS HOO
Fable is that one franchise that I loved dearly, bought every game, played every DLC, etc., but it followed a pretty sharp downturn in quality over time, while its budget only inflated. It's all opinion, of course, but I'd like to share my experience with the franchise.

I played fable 1 as a kid and never even heard to Peter or any of the claims. I experienced the game innocent and in all of its beauty. I loved it very much.

Physique is the one that makes you look ugly. For a female character, if you keep it at 2 or below you're fine.

The golden trail was amazing. It let me know where I was supposed to go so I could go explore everywhere else first.
It was similar to the lit up nav system in Dead Space which I used for the exact same thing. Go everywhere off the beaten path I could access at that point in time and continue main story stuff when I exhausted all other distractions.
This has just given me a very vivid memory of that gold trail having a lot of issues in the first game. I'm not complaining, I'm just remembering it kept making me go on this crazy ass loop and then kept back tracking. Then I would go back and it would have me go back the way I just came.

@@arturoherbert8786 I don't get how, it just told you where to go, in the first you just teleported to wherever you needed to go and it basically had the same thing because of the arrow on the mini map, it really does allow you to wander off without worrying of getting lost, I personally don't think that the mechanic did any harm

Me, glitching through some stairs to get the sword of aeons at the start of the game and kicking a dude for hours to farm my strength to max in the first town: Yeees.. eeeearned.

Me, digging at a specific spot nearby the boasting pavilion, which caused additional NPCs to spawn, and thus amass a mob of 40+ NPCs to show off my trophies to, and max out my renown before wasp queen.

Abusing the two saving functions to get infinite silver keys. There was also a spot in one of the houses in bowerstone where you could *cough* beat your wife without killing her to farm evil points >_> at least that actually made me feel like a horrible person without being a forced option.
Graestra at least I don’t feel bad about abusing saves for silver keys since you could potentially lock yourself out of at least one of them if you don’t marry that bowerstone bitch
I won't lie, when Fable 2 finally let's you loose in that gypsy village, the first thing I tried to do was hit a child. The disappointment of that moment set the tone for the rest of the game.
I played fable 3 first ( it came with the Xbox 360 My older brother got) I was hoping to smack some snot nosed little shits into orbit with my hammer.
But you can, you just have to turn off the safe system

Biggest grin on my face when you got to the first sentence of Fable II. Like you, I've beaten it more times than any other game, and 100% each time. It was the first Fable I played, and is my all time favourite game to this day.
And similar to you, I couldn't possibly explain why. It's so janky and weird. But I don't give a shit, I love it.
Also on your note that spellweaving is broken in III, in trying to find interesting combos I found that aoe Vortex+Blades makes a new individual ring of blades summon and target each enemy caught in the blast. So you can make the most damaging target spell an aoe attack.
I think having that dog in the game when I really wanted one as a kid just basically made me love it for life hah

Had to dig deep to find someone saying something good about Fable 2. Kinda surprised me, it's by far my favorite one. I have a Fable 2 Guild Seal tattoo.
Fable 2 has always been my absolute favorite, to the point that my friends started referring to me as Bastian and my character as Atreyu. Lol. It'll always be my favorite.

I enjoyed 2 a lot. The atmosphere and combat was so satisfying. Villain started off good but fell flat by the end. I think I still enjoyed 1 a little better though
My favorite part about Fable 3 was carefully saving money and thinking I had a tonne of time left only for there to be a random time skip out of nowhere. In the end all my "careful planning" managed to do what fuck me sideways.
I still want to see Fable 2 on PC. Mainly to see the modding community patch the game and make it more Fable. Add actual armor, fix the way the character controls, maybe make your character look less freakish, get rid of the bad morality points from eating meat because some vegan must have snuck some extra lines of code or something. That would be nice.

Yeah, eating a chick would give you evil points in Fable 1. Otherwise, you could eat all the meat you wanted, you just potentially get fat if your character wasn't active. Fable 2 wanted you to be a soy swilling vegan to be the goodest of heroes. It felt like a weird and passive-aggressive attempt to push an ideology on people.

Fun Fact: in Fable 2 you can max out your character from the moment you upgrade your first ability.

@@itsyaboiChubbs Get your first ability upgrade. Make a henchmen character using a guest profile, making it so that your character receives 100% of experience. The guest character comes in as a copy of your character, ability wise. Sell their ability then make them quit. Use the experience you get from it to buy another ability. Rinse and repeat. Your character is maxed out within 10-15 minutes, before you even leave the Chamber of Fate.
While I'm on the topic, all 3 Fable games had infinite gold exploits too.
Now I want to see a speedrun of Fable 2, to see how that much that actually affects people trying to just end the game quickly.
I used this trick back in the day to get in the top 10 of the total xp leaderboards for Fable 2 (yeah that existed), only took me like 2 hours to get up there. Seems like a pretty massive oversight for a game centered around character progression.

@Ornate Orator The game needs the reboot. The world and humor is there but the story and game design are sadly terrible.
Really hoping if they're truly making a sequel with a new company that they go right back in time pre Hero of Oakvale to all the old heroes. It sounds like an really interesting story and then at least they have a good starting point.
The problem is the gamedevs being bought out by Microsoft. MS changed the game completely to make it more appealing to children and I fucking hate that.

There's a good chance it didn't. Lots of leaks suggest that Fable 4 is in development for next gen, though nothing official so take that with a grain of salt.
The lore of Fable is ironically depressing, ill say the most interesting lore piece for me was simply the “Fall of the Guild” that change/transition I found the most interesting to think about and to imagine.
I honestly loved the franchise, I remember putting at least a good chunk of time in the Xbox 1 fable and played a hell of a lot of Favle 2, but I can definitely agree Fable 3. The combat annoyed the hell out of me and had the random slow motion finisher when you didn’t even mean to, but it was fun making a choice for everyone to get drunk trying to save money lol

I love all 3 of these games. Sure they had there issues like any game but the combat, magic, humour, world and overall vibe of every fable game is something I've never experienced anywhere else they truly do feel magical

There's no reason to sneak and steal, or to buy property, or to get married, because there doesn't need to be a reason for those things. They're just things you can do if you want to, if you feel like it. Not everything "needs" a reason.

Yea the 2nd and 3rd just lacked the depth that the first game has as far as RPG systems were concerned. They definitely polished the game a good amount but I really wish they kept that old RPG system in tact :(

I've got mixed feelings on this video. On the one hand, I agree that the games didn't have the most interesting systems, and that a lot of the systems were pointless. On the other hand, I know why they were that way, and I like the redundancy of a lot of it. It's somewhat like Crysis in that way. The studio put as much random stuff in as they could. And while the third game isn't great it was still alright. The second game is still great, because you could interact with everyone. You never had to, you could just ignore everything but the required quests and some sidequests, but that was the beauty of it. You could be whoever you wanted to try to be. And the morality system helped with that. There were some quests like the one where a ghost asks you to make their ex-fiancee fall in love with you and break their heart. Some people really wanted to go either way, and that allowed you to chose a somewhat meaningful thing in the world. My final bit on the morality system, is the Temple of Shadows and the Temple of Light. You could drastically change the world based on who you chose to help, and that impacted the game in fun and interesting ways. I agree that the game was a bit ridiculous at points where it could have been more serious, but that was the charm of the series. The third game got too serious compared to the previous games. It still had it's fun bits, but it was much more serious than the others. And I think that is part of what lead to the downfall of the series and Lionhead.

Personally, I see them as
1 - Almost limitless freedom without much to entice the player to use said freedom.
2 - More restrictive, most interesting story and characters (for a Fable game), art style is unsettling, the most beautiful women in Albion look like melting cheese.
3 - Most interesting world, a fantasy world with magic undergoing a totalitarian industrial revolution. Um...your character can talk sometimes so you don't have to use emotes for important story moments...That's about it.
Conclusion - I should hate these games, why am I still playing, please help.
"Aesthetic limitations' is a weird argument in my opinion. That would mean you couldn't have mature themes communicated with a stylised appearance? Well that's a whole lot of illustration and animation invalidated then.
S Moss you make a point. It’s not like people haven’t used things like puppets to convey mature themes. Considering the world of Fable is largely satirical in nature, it makes sense.

Yeah this is the thing I have to disagree with him the hardest on. I understand not liking an aesthetic, and not liking a subject matter, but not liking subject matter because of the aesthetic or vise versa is just ridiculously arbitrary.
I'd say that tonally Fable 2 is particularly awful with balancing the overbearingly """"silly"""" npcs and jokey aspects with its super serious main story, but tonal inconsistency is _completely_ different.
The aesthetics (including musically speaking) at least in Fable 1 are there to give an almost whimsical, fairytale feel while the game also indulges in really dark shit. Those things coming together like an awesome mixture of both the modern, family-friendly and the OG-hardcore fairytales. It's fookin' beautiful and genuinely clever if you ask me!
fable 2 was great just wish that there was a house to buy in westcliff.
You can turn Westcliff into a thriving village, if you give Bernum (I think that's his name, the inventor guy), 5000 gold before you leave for the spire to save Garth.
@Ornate Orator Pretty much lol. He will also give you 15000 when you get back from the spire, meaning there's no reason not to do it, as you gain 10000 gold, and Westcliff becomes a place that's worth while and a money maker with houses.

I once read in a website that Westcliff was once a thriving fishing town until it was destroyed during the Citizen's Revolt against the Heroe's Guild, never fully recovering until Barnum and the Hero of Bowerstone redeveloped it. I'm not sure if this is cannon but adding more of Westcliff's history in the game would've been interesting.

The whole point of the game isnt for it to be grey or morally ambigious though. Your not supposed to think, what should I do ,tough choice, like a game like witcher 3. Its supossed to be morally karma based, you play it like, im going to a good playthrough or I am going to do a evil playthrough. like how when your fully good you have a halo or like when your fully evil you are a literal demon with horns from your head, I dont think you understand the concept. The whole point is that it is ''fable'' between pure good and pure evil and the curiousity of seeing how your character changes from becoming more evil or good. Like the infamous games idk if u played those.
I agree, all of the games are made simply to have fun, in any of them, it allows you to be be a dick to everyone, or you can just play it normally and do the morally good things. Even in Fable 3 where you have to be king right after you just took over the kingdom solely because Logan is a dick, you can still be a dick of a king and that's HILARIOUS. I love all 3 games, and I think that Fable is the type of series that's not *supposed* to be looked at critically because lionhead didn't try to make objectively good games, they wanted to make games that you can dick around in for hours and have a fun time.

I actually liked the cartoon aesthetic mixed with dark themes, for me its why this game literally scared me as a child. It was disturbing in a neat way. Just seeing the cheery and gorgeous scenery of the beginning totally turn to blood and ash and brutality shocked me as a kid because I didn't even realize what kind of game it was and being that I. wasnt old enough to read well of course I never ready anything that would have told me otherwise , so from that perspective it definitely gave me a respect for it.
Kingdome of amalur is what fable series wanted to be and more. I too loved fable series 1+2 more than 3 but KoA was like fable on roids and better.

fable 2 was my favorite by a mile. I loved the edge of industrial revolution era, and the combat felt so much better than fable 1. It's easy sure, but so was fable 1. Atleast now it feels good.

I love fable and fable 2 the third one was very disappointing. And I too have completed the second fable many times.
I replayed all 3 recently, and the decisions thing was interesting, but it’s been a slide from decent to not interesting.
I love Fable games. I know fable 3 wasn't the strongest of the 3 but feel it get a way too hard time from fans. I quite liked it.
Berserker + Multistrike + Divine Shield is a very, *very* balanced strat for Fable 1.
All I can remember about Fable 3 was how incredibly sudden (the calendar skips like half a year), stupid (the big evil corrupting thingie shows up out of nowhere, and takes over you mentor for the lulz... and that's about it) and anti-climactic (I honestly thought that the final boss was just a midboss on my way towards the final confrontation, and I cheesed him to death like any other enemy in the game under a minute) the ending was.
The only other thing I remember was how the actual "legitimate" way to have a good ending was to become a land shark, and pay for the war preparations using the money you siphoned out of your tenants. A great lesson about economics.

They both overhype their games, they promise too many things, and the overall execution is “Okay” at best.
and like both of them (atleast until 3, 2 was ehh for it) they tended to make huge changes in the industry.
tho todd does that more often then peter as said, though its something that is cool at first, but shortly after every other game implements whatever cool thing they added and more often then not it gets overused extremely quickly, the only exception being maybe something like morrowind which added a bunch of 3d graphics, huge open world, etc that was extremely new and alien at the time.

Todd is by far worse, 76 is widely considered one of if not the worst game of 2019 and they keep trying to push it as a good game and rip people off, they also try to ignore all the hate it’s getting and they also messed up fallout 4 big time, and Skyrim was good besides that they keep dumbing it down but they re release it so that they don’t have to worry about people asking for es6

1) Todd didn't have a major role in making Morrowind.
2) Morrowind was actually a much much smaller open world than both main TES games that came before it. Not that Arena was any good, but still.

The lost chapters managed to have the most shallow boring combat that was probably one of the most satisfying at the same time, not sure how thats possible but I liked it. Definitely the best entry in the series for me. I still install it every year or two and start playing through again. I think the fact that it is so basic is part of the attraction for me. When you need to destroy and explore , but not really have to think too much The Lost Chapters is the perfect remedy.
I think the most dissapointing thing about fable 3 is that I played it.
There is one thing from Fable 3 that I will defend at least somewhat, and that is the menu system (Road to Rule was a definite meh though). I really liked that the menu button instantly took you to your own private Sanctuary. Was really an immersive way of doing the regular old RPG menu we've seen a thousand fucking times. That said, the butler was kinda stupid and I actually liked it when he was just gone during the story. What's the point of having a private Sanctuary when I gotta share it with Jeeves over here?

Surprised you mentioned Fable 3’s Spell Weaving in a con instead of a plus. Overpowered or not, it’s a very neat system.
I just finished Fable 3, and I didn't find the spell weaving that interesting. It was basically instead of using 1 damage spell, you used 2 damage spells. Instead of using just fire or just lightning, you just use both at once. If it actually created some new effect that was exclusive to that combination and not possible by just using any of the individual spells, then maybe it would have been worth it.
Also because they wanted this spell weaving system in the game, they had to strip it of even more spells, specifically the support spells because how do you weave those? At least Slow Time and Summon are still in the game as potions, but that's an incredibly lame solution to a problem they created.
The first fable has a special place in my heart.
The fact that there is virtually no foreshadowing for the Darkness basically until you get to desert-land is one of the most grievous narrative sins I’ve ever seen. It infuriates me.

I was a kid when i played the fable trilogy, and fable 3 came out around the time i was 14 or so. I loved them all, and never had any beef with any of them. Fable 3 was my favorite entry and one of my few gripes with it was the inability to get all the achievments by myself

They're all fun, they're just... they feel cheap. I think junk food is the perfect analogy. They're satisfying, and you feel bad for having been satisfied by it.

I remember playing fable 2 and 3 when I was a kid. Fable 3 was the game that me and my cousin played when he came to visit and most of the time we just fucked around the world and laughed my ass off with the stuff we would do.
Fable The Lost Chapters was one of the first games I have bought. I didn't know shit about it beforehand, I just saw a cool box art. I was a stupid kid mind you. It's full of flaws and barebones systems but it has tons of charm and personality a lot of never games lack. Still one of my favourite games ever. 2 and 3 aren't bad games either. 2 is pretty great, while 3 is ok

Fable 2 has been the only piece of media ive ever repeated. I hate rewatching movies, shows, and replaying video games - but Fable 2 I've replayed over a dozen times since I was 10.

Man, I'm blind to much of the critisism on Fable II because that game was my life when I was a teen. I must've beaten it like 10 times at least, and I bet I knew where every single chest was. Even now that I'm well into my 20's I bought and Xbox instead of a Playstation just so I could play it.
I'm carefully optimistic about Fable 4. I'm glad you didn't talk about Fable: The Journey or all the other crap. They're not even worth mentioning. I lost my interest in any new Fable games for a looong time after being so disappointed with Fable III.
Edit: Oh, and I had the craziest crush on Reaver. I was so in love with him that I learned to see lucid dreams just so I could see him there. But when I finally got to that point after weeks of trying, he looked like my ATK teacher and acted like him too. I ditched him by sliding through a wall.
Being a landlord is the only reason I love Fable 2 more than Fable one. And seeing how much money I could get. Not to mention the jobs and economy. But when it comes to story I was a lot less invested than Fable 1 until the very end.
I actually loved Fable 2, its easily my favorite in the series. It's easy, sure, and magic is definitely overpowered but frankly everything in that game is overpowered by the end and running around with your Masterwork Daichi and Red Dragon is just as powerful as any spell (and quicker to boot). But finding these things was part of the charm, and I think charm is where the game excels. It's pretty, the music is great, I find the humor actually humorous and the series's tone, that weird, Grim's Fairytale-esque walk between the stupidly comedic and the incredibly dark and melancholic is something that jives with me and was pulled off best here. The only thing I didn't like was that, for all the talk of customization I hate how your character will almost always end up 7 feet tall, Swole as all hell, and with blue Gamer PC lines all of them because your appearance is determined by your skill growth and anyone taking the game even remotely seriously is going to probably nearly max all stats by the end of the game. You couldn't ever just look...normal. But I guess that was the point, you are a hero after all.

Golden Sun didn’t have a “Great Narrative Lie”. It and Lost Age were meant to be one game, first of all.
And second of all, even though Isaac’s team was doing the wrong thing, if they didn’t do it, the villains of that game would have killed WAY more people, and Felix would not have saved the world in the second game.

honestly i still seriously enjoy each one of these games, while i do think that fable 3 and 2 are not as good as the first but i still enjoy them so much, especially since fable 2 was literally the first video game i ever played and the first one i beat
I personally felt that the excessively dark and grim backdrop against the colorful presentation and humor is what made Fable so great.
When you look at historical fables like Snow White, you had vivid imagery of a lovely girls with snow white skin, onyx black hair, and ruby red lips.
Then you find out her mother died as a child, her dad married and evil bitch, then later 'mysteriously' passed away leaving full control of the kingdom to the woman who would go on to attack his daughter for her beauty.
Fables have always been colorful wrapping over a dark subject, a sort of 'gilded grimness' is what helped define them as their own tall tale genre.
That gilded grimness is part of what helped establish and subvert expectations when nailed right; one of my all time favorite quests that I most prominently remember is when you rescue a grandmother's child that ran away from home, save him from Hobbes, only to find out that he ran because she abused him and punished him when he didn't do all her chores for her.
Sure, he could be blowing it out of proportion, but when you consider the continual darkness present in the story, you wonder if you were almost the baddy for 'rescuing' him.
TLDR; it's the grimdark stories with colorful presentation combined with Fable's 'do whatever' attitude that made it so great.
Oh yeah, also the guild master continually asking about your health and mana.
That was critical to the experience, Fable just wasn't Fable after they removed it.

The sequels failed to understand what made it great. Microsoft purchased Lionhead post Fable 1's release. They pushed for accessibility and trends rather than perfecting what they had.
I feel like the fable series would be better as a series of comics at least from the second game onwards

Playing this as a kid, it was fantastic. It might not be deep, but it was deep enough for a 12 year old. Playing it again as an old gamer has been entertaining too.

Yes, 1 game. Besides that there arent many around anymore. Fable 4 and Baldurs Gate 3 are in development, but thats it. I dont have many hopes for DA4 though...
