      I see, well its very similar to the real ones because they had a tendency to slip.

      @@wooltman have seen some good grip provided on alloy rail, the key is if you've been running on steel rail, give your wheels a very good clean before going on alloy & same if you've ran on alloy & then going on steel as coatings on your wheels from the different rail types will effect grip on the different type of rail

    Somewhat late in the day, I looked into the history of the Single. The tendency of the main wheels to slip must have also occurred on the GW in Broad Gauge days, allowing for the fact their dimensions were huge.
    Mr Stirling worked on the problem apparently but it was never fully resolved. Maybe another reason as to why the Atlantic wheel arrangement was chosen to lead the Loco Department up to the close of the old century.

      I was just going to ask about the amount of wheel slip in this video, so the cause is the rails being, what are they, a polymer?

    An awesome engine model! Very nice photography as well! It almost looks like you were filming a full size Stirling Single, standing on the ground next to it!
    Do you know what changes had to be made to improve adhersion? Or is adhesion just improving as the wheels wear in?

    • @wooltman
      @wooltman  9 лет назад

      Thank you William for your kind comments.I couldn't say what changes have been done to improve the grip,but any loco can be weighed this measures the spring strength of each driving wheel and adjustments can be made,but as this is a 4-1-1 i'm not sure how it can be done.Regards Chris.

    • @wooltman
      @wooltman  3 года назад

      You can see steam/smoke coming from the chimney, but on warmer days it won't show up so much.On cold damp days you will see more exhaust...The steam you can see through the video is from the safety valve,these lift at the required level.these stop the loco making to much steam which then could cause the boiler to explode,hence the name safety valves..Hope that helps.
