Good video. After spending a soul-destroying 6 hours with a heat gun and scraper trying to remove multiple layers of ancient paint from a door, I decided after watching this to buy a flap disc. Absolute life-saver. Took me no more than half an hour each to strip the remaining doors.
High speed grinders with flap discs will cause too much heat on wood with paint or varnishes the result is caramelizing these coatings building up on your disc and burnt wood which is what you have. Choose a variable speed grinder and use the slower speed settings, this cuts down on the heat from the friction of the grinding wheel and they will last much longer. High speed or single speed grinders with flap discs are meant for finishing steel which obviously has a much higher melting point and just grind the steel away eventually wearing out the disc.
So true!!
There's a 50 dollar decking strip disc 4 half inch you can buy im actually praying it works for me tomorrow.
I'd suggest renting a drum sander BUT instead of the cheapo home depot sandpaper, start with a 24grit from a higher end brand. I'd suggest a Norton product from cityfloorsupply. Exponentially faster and a much more consistent surface. Since there's paint, hit it with 24 grit, then on as normal: 36, 60 then 80/100. Done. Use an edge sander as well after each pass of the drum sander of the same grit. Pete's hardwood (Google it) has fairly comprehensive guides on their website.
As to why someone would paint wood floors, back in the day, wood flooring wasn't seen as being luxury as it is now, most people had wood flooring as there weren't many (if any) other options. Pine(which it seems you have and I as well) was the cheap option while oak was the fancy option. Which is why you'll typically find oak flooring in the main living areas, hopefully unpainted, and pine in bedrooms or upstairs. All of that to say, painting pine floors was just the same as painting a wall to someone back then. Porches almost always have their boards painted, but that is mostly for durability and protecting against water ingress since the porch was open.
Source: just refinished the flooring in two 1920s era homes and did waaaaaayyy too much research along the way.

Enjoy the old house! Use a really good respirator!!!
Been chipping away here and there on my 1890 homes stairs for over a week. Stripping, scraping sanding etc and I think there’s 3-4 layers of paint....I think I’m going to give this a try!
Awesome video. Great job. Very helpful. Many thanks for sharing your experiences. Also thanks for the lack of BS and getting into the real meat of the topic.
Forgot to ad, I am here to watch videos, not ads and dont care that you make money off of them or not.
Great video! Very cool! Thank you!
Nice!!
I wish I tried this 1st instead of last...I tried my belt sander, saw zaw with Spyder mouse sander attachment, car polisher with 7" stick on sand paper, oscillating sander....nothing worked as well as your idea with the grinder....I have to sand a whole house and going with the grinder....Thanks for posting this information & passing it on to me..!!
;D
are you sanding hte stain off a log home? Thats what im looking into and its a nightmare.
@@josephdemato6467 No, sanding rubberized porch paint a renter foolishly applied to floors....It's like bed liner 1/4" thick...I had to rend drum sander from lowes.
So I took off deck over on the deck. I wonder if a dimabrush would have been better.
This looks like it could be a life saver. Just so that I understand correctly, you’re talking about the discs normally used for working with metal, right?
Try silicone carbide grinding/stripping disc. They are designed to clog the least and remove the most. They are relatively cheap on amazon.
Nice!
0:26 Ouch!!
Hello, I am new to this and wondering if the angle grinder will always spit out a spark. I am trying to do the sides of the rooms I am sanding and can't get my hands on an edger that works. So saw your video and tried but got a spark and didn't know if that was normal since I am in a room. Thanks, Cathy
Nails....
Also Possibly need to change bushings or putting to much pressure
If your using a drum sander with all those layers, start with lower grit disc. Like 36 or less. The floor wont ever be flat/smooth enough. It would only take 1-2 days
Sir, I have ceramic flap discs. Can this remove paint from a deck?
Yep!
@@FixingWithPassion just got done sanding half the deck. Thanks for the vid
How many do u think you went through
Way to many! For light sanding only.
Paint probably preserved surface long run.
Instead of a handheld wire brush, you can use the wire brush that attaches to a drill. You can thank me later... safety glasses of course
Would a planer not have been a more appropriate tool?
Thankfully dreams colour house. Nepal.
Yea!
yeeaaaaah..........millennials did not invent linoleum, put crappy carpet and paint all the wood trim in all the cool old houses.
Please tell me you wore a respirator while doing this. Seriously, that shit is bad for your lungs.
Guess you dont want people to watch this since they have to continually shut down the intro due to ads and start over. Had to do this over six times before I just gave up. Wont watch anymore!
Scotty has more Ads!!
Prefer the sanding discs. Find flap discs too ridget.
me too!
Bloody millennials trying to insulate their floors with paint in the 50s. What do they know?!
