I am an "American Woman" and even though I like American Woman I have heard by Burton Cummings 2 different stories about how "American Woman" came about...and really like his voice..

Cool. And good job by the interviewer btw - knew his subject and didn't ask any stupid questions. Randy and Burton stayed relaxed and open.

Except he said they were bringing back the "Sock Hop" which was in the 50's and Cummings and Bachman were in their prime in the 70's. 10 to 15 years after the "Sock Hop" era.

@newfypearl "Love is All Around," "With a Girl Like You," "I Can't Control Myself," ". The Troggs are well known around the world too but obviously the Guess Who's legacy has remained strong, especially in Canada. Yeah I like the Beatles but I listen to hundreds of other artists. Believe me, I'm quite knowledgeable. Guess Who were pretty good, I just don't see them as the Canadian Beatles. But they were as good as the 2nd tier of British Rock acts if not better.

Oh and their AM radio success was consistently more interesting than a lot of the big US top 40 groups no one recalls today- Gary Puckett & the Union Gap, Jay & the Americans, the Grassroots, the American Breed, etc. I'd say the Guess Who were as good as Paul Revere & the Raiders or the Turtles. In my view, they were not among the true rock gods of the day- Beatles, Stones, Who, Zeppelin, Cream, Allman Bros., etc. But to stick around for 7 years of chart smashes was no small feat in that era.

great with the Early Guess Who, the new versions sound like shit.

Great duo and Canadian rock icons, though I wish sometimes their legacy in Canada would stop equating them to Lennon-McCartney in stature. Yes they wrote classic pop songs together but that's where the similarities end. No one can be as good as Lennon-McCartney so sometimes I get the sense Canadian pride kicks in when entertainment and music historians equate the Guess Who to the Beatles. To be more accurate, the Guess Who were Canada's answer the Troggs, but better (except for "Wild Thing").

I always wished that people like Kravitz would take the time they spent trashing a great song and put it to more productive use by trying to acquire some talent of of their own or better yet - get OUT of the music business.

I heard Burton say in a radio interview when he was asked what he thought about Lenny Kravitz recording his own version of American Woman.....he casually responded, "'sall good, maybe I'll look around at some cool mansions to spend some of the giant royalty cheque money on" and he probably made enough for alot more than one.
