    I'm actually sick of the comment sections on any truck matchups or even muscle car matchups, it reminds me of our political landscape right now, you're extreme supporting on either side. it's actually disgusting, as a pickup truck fan and muscle fan, fanboys drive me crazy cuz they litter the comment sections with their pre-conceived notions about reliability and what not. the comment section is more like a meme war between fanboys. why can't you miserable fanboys appreciate both trucks? the Ram is using a coil rear suspension with an 8 year old designed hemi engine and it squatted LESS than the Ford. it hasn't had a major update since 2009, and give credit to the Ford, it's engine and tranny combo proved to be quite more efficient than the Ram. although bland looking, it still proved efficient and showed it would be a great work truck. why the hate? you pickup truck fanboys are so miserable, I'm a mopar guy at heart but I I appreciate all the big 3 offerings. whether in pickups or muscle cars. the rest of you are miserable human beings. you think one is better, and no matter what the other companies do, you'll always have that view of them.... I feel bad for you. I'll get off my soap box now...

      Hell ya man. Honestly it's not apples-to-apples once you test with different final drives. Does give prospective buyers an idea of what to expect from a truck configured similarly to one of those, though.

      Manpreet Singh well thing is now with trucks that there is such small different s in the trucks that there's no point in arguing about who is better all of the big 3 are great and people need to just realize that you just pick the one you like best and have fun with it

    I wouldn't buy one personally but Dodge (RAM) does make a nice looking base model pickup, the Ford base model really does look "base", for work trucks however I wouldn't complain if either were my company truck.

    • @ALMX5DP
      @ALMX5DP 7 лет назад +1

      Arent the only real differences in exterior styling due to replacing of the black plastic with fake chrome? I think even the Ram work truck's grill is all black plastic as well and this one has a chrome option package.

    • @jeffreylines1535
      @jeffreylines1535 7 лет назад +6

      Even the base tradesman has a black plastic grill but to me the overall appearance of the Dodge (RAM) just looks better, for some reason the Ford looks like the wheels don't fit right or something and it looks like they tried to make the grill look good but something just lets it down. Again based on past experience (we have all had lemons in our lives) so I wouldn't personally buy a Dodge again but my personal opinion is the Dodge looks better until you get to the upper end of the line Longhorn and Limited with the goofy grill (the one that has two big holes in it). I'm just glad all three are fairly close overall so I don't have to feel like I settled to get something I felt comfortable owning. As a work truck (company supplied) I know all three will get the job done until they break and when they break it wont sting so much because I am not writing the check.

    Great review guys... and it really hits home with me. I HAD a 2000 Super Duty supercab short bed V10 4x4 for a number of years. I HAVE a 2016 Ram 2500 crew cab short bed 6.4L 4x4, that I've owned for the past year. Both great trucks. In the Super Duty, I was able to get ~16 mpg on a camping trip. In the Ram, I was able to get ~18 mpg... that's with 4.10s & less than 5k miles on the Ram... in 110 degree heat with the A/C cranked the whole way. There are things I do not like about the Ram. There were things I did not like about the Super Duty. I WILL say that the Ram is about the quietest vehicle I've owned... very comfortable over long drives, provided you've got a little weight in the bed to smooth out the ride a bit. I'm equal opportunity... I've got a Ram 2500, a Mercury Grand Marquis, and a C5 Corvette Z06. It's all good... buy what makes you happy!

    Great test. Two variables that, in my opinion give the edge to the Ford. One, I think I heard you say the Ram was two wheel drive. I heard no mention of this for the Ford. Rear drive only would improve mpg by about one mpg. And two, gas tank size. The Ford has, in short bed form, a 34 gallon tank. The Ram is 31 or 32 in short bed. When getting these relatively low mpg’s, that extra bit of range can make a big difference.

    ram fans will still buy rams and ford fans will still buy fords. companies might be swayed. though ive worked at complanies with pickup fleets and it usually boils down to which brand gives the better deal. or what brand the manager likes most.
    very impressive highway empty miles. you mentioned the ram was 4x2, but didnt mention what the ford was. plus no rear gear comparison.
    ive heard nothing but good about the 6.2. now if only they could cast that in aluminium and put it in the stang.

      Big Ford fan here. Always bought fords. Caught a deal on a '07 Ram 2500 6.7 Diesel with 120k for 16k this past year and switched. It's a great truck. No real complaints to speak of. However, had I been able to find a steal like that on a Ford, I'd have bought the Ford, so I mostly agree.

    • @nonrevhogan8938
      @nonrevhogan8938 7 лет назад

      Eric s Its really not a matter of trust. Just watching and make my own opinions. Just me, I don't like the ram's dash. Like Gmc's better, And that stupid tow mirror on the ram is just backwards to me. I would never have the spot part of the mirror off to the right, that's nuts to me. And then flip. Not for me. Like i said, I'm still impressed with it. And the diesel. Will be doing some test driving myself.

      sealtite87 Yeah my 1998 Navigator with its coils tows the 24' car hauler nicer than the 2015 F-150 with its leaf springs.
      I'm only talking ride smoothness though. It's no contest for squat, power, and fuel economy. 😒
      Navigator wouldn't squat so much if I had air bags again but there's still poor fuel economy to contend with.

    Another thing that I’ve seen from watching RV videos and reading forums is that you should NOT drive over 65MPH! Once you pass 65 your mileage exponentially reduces the faster you drive and they were driving 70! Take the test again, drive 65 and then recheck your mileage. It will be closer to 10mpg which is much better to live with when towing a horse or cattle trailer, cargo or RV trailer. Another thing that helps at speed is a V-nose trailer! They’re using an old fashion slightly rounded nose trailer. V-nose would also increase the mileage.

    I can only wish for 16mpg in my 2016 reg cab RAM 2500, 6.4L 4wd. Leveled, it sits a few inches higher in the front end and has the aerodynamics of a box of saltines. 80% city/ 20% highway driving = 11mpg average. But I still hate the Prius, so it all works out.

    • @ALMX5DP

      Not necessarily. Isolating sound and pressure waves is really separate from airflow. Engineers spend a lot of time and energy to come up with these designs. And I can tell you from numerous cold air intakes and even simple resonator deletes or high flow filter replacements that it does make an audible difference, even if minor (but its every last decibel that manufacturers look for).

    My '07 Dodge 1/2 ton 4x4 with the older 4.7l V8 gets about 16.5 mpg. highway. This new HD RAM with waayyy more HP and a heavier truck, gets the same mpg. Nice!

  • @wmc128
    @wmc128 7 лет назад +1

    you get your best fuel mpg highway at 55mph doing 70 mph is going drop your mpg rating by 15% so if you get around 20 mpg at highway speed traveling at 55mph it will drop to around 17mpg at 70 mph. Towing kills your fuel mpg by almost 50% so around 10 mpg when towing at 55mph.

      wmc128 My 2018 Power Wagon gets the best fuel economy right at 70 MPH. It sits right around 1900rpm at that speed which is the sweet spot for not having to downshift. I can cruise at 55 and get the same 17 MPG, but hills will make it downshift and start killing the fuel mileage.

    • @dchawk81
      @dchawk81 6 лет назад

      While not 100% scientific, my MPGs stayed largely the same when I went to Chicago doing the speed limits everywhere vs returning doing 70 or so. I wanted to get home after a long week and it didn't cost me much; maybe half an MPG. It was approximately 650 miles each way.
      It depends how long your end game is though. A short trip you're more affected. But short trips also have acceleration and braking, the former is what really kills you.

    My issue with my RAM is that in tow/ haul it locks out Over Drive, which is way the RPMs are higher. Guess they are trying to save the transmission.

    Ya know I think that you guys always have a favorite in mind. Also you never stated what the GVW & GCW was on either truck. It was stated that the Dodge was 4X2 but not revealed about the Ford. (I saw a knob where the 4X4 switch belongs in the Ford But it could have been the electronic locking axle.) Now who would tow a 12000 lb trailer w/o leveling bars and anti sway @ 70+ mph? Which would make measuring a mute point.

    • @dchawk81
      @dchawk81 6 лет назад

      Paul Rodrigues HD trucks don't need leveling and and anti sway anymore. That's a half ton thing. And even it is size related more so than weight (especially anti-sway). Camper, yes. Flatdeck, no.

    I think the Ram's transmission is part of what let it down here. It has probably the oldest transmission in the segment. The other aspect of the Ram that's probably messing its MPGs up is that it has a 4.10 rear, and the Ford has a 3.73. I don't think they mentioned this difference in this video, but they did in one of the others. The extra drive train spinning could explain at least some of the towing MPG difference.
    That said, the fact that the Ram is easily the oldest and heaviest here says a lot if it's a quarter ton heavier, and gets the same MPGs without a load.

    Those F-250s seem to squat reasonably easily, I've noticed that over the past few years with these newer ones. I like the 6.2 a lot, though, and Ford's aren't known for fuel economy so it did pretty well. I bet the Chevrolet would have beaten both in this challenge, since Chevy seems to be very good about V8 fuel economy.

    Your results aren't news to me, having towed trailers with a Ram for 6 years. The trip display has always been optimistic on mine, and not by a little...sometimes off by 10%. Doesn't really affect me, because I didn't buy it for fuel economy, but would be nice for it to be close to accurate.

      NJW1973 I have 3.73 in mine but I have a 4 foot long bed and I average 15mpg but I don't have a very light foot. Honestly the 3.73 aren't bad but i did upgrade to 4.56 gears for the big wheel torque Jump! If this truck had the 8 speed like dodge should have made it with it would be a downright monster and I'm sure average better mpgs easily! I hope future Rams have the 8 speed as an option! I loved it in my 1500!

    i'm curious why Ford doesn't have a version of that new EcoBoost engine they use in the Raptor detuned to go in the HD trucks? I mean the regular F150 EcoBoost has more torque than this motor and almost as much horsepower, I would imagine they could use the EcoBoost to make for a much more capable base model...

    I suppose I should put pencil to paper (and a GPS) to see what I'm getting in my '16 Power Wagon, though I've added 200+ pounds in rock/step sliders, a ARE shell, 35's and my ARB fridge is generally well stocked. I'm sure it isn't great, though better than my '97 LX450 (Land Cruiser) which might get 10mpgs off a cliff, with a tailwind. Does the Ford have cylinder deactivation? Both are good work trucks IMHO.

    You guys crack me up.... The Ford does pretty much everything you test better... Drag racing, mpg.... But you always come up with an excuse as why the other truck is better.... The drag race you had to end it with the ford's brakes being grabby.... The mpg test you come back with the Dodge did squat as much.... I think it was about three quarters of an inch.
    Bottom line is the test that you performed the Ford won hands down.
