    Sometimes it's the little things that make the biggest difference, and the fact that Zacklift listened to the comments (and gripes) about the ratchet shows that they are willing to pay attention and do what they can to make things easier. Nice looking grid setup!!

    Thanks for the explanation of the towing of the fire truck! I was under the presumption that the transmission/transfer case was the same one that would be used on a standard 2500/3500/4500, etc... and had a neutral position for flat towing. Makes sense that nothing else on that truck is 'standard equipment'! I did appreciate the comparisons of the wheel lifts, and they will come in super handy at my desk job, where I sit watching your videos!! Thanks for taking the time to educate all of us!

  • @cds9000
    @cds9000 28 дней назад +1

    I’m not in towing but I have an armchair interest in engineering. The Zacklift stuff just seems designed by people who understand the work being done. Building it is one part, knowing what to build is another. Lots of attention to detail, and nods towards efficiency and simplicity. Mark of a good product. The tool gets out of the way and the work gets done.

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  28 дней назад +3

      @@cds9000 Zacklift was created by a man named Ed Zackovitch. He owned a towing company and decided to start building his own equipment. So in some ways, you can tell that it was designed by a tow truck driver, and in other ways you can tell it was designed by a tow truck driver lol. Now it is owned my Matthew Freeborn, who is a mechanical engineer, so he’s taking the tow truck driver logic, and streamlining it with modern engineering and design. The combination is working wonderfully

    The only downfall I see to the Zacklift wheel grids is you will have to be sure you have your winches spaced where you want them before you bump to the tires of the vehicle you are towing. Not a major problem, just something to remember until you get used to it.

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  28 дней назад +3

      I’ve used them twice since filming this and it wasn’t even a thought that crossed my mind. You have to line the wheel grids up with the tires before pushing them into each other anyways, so it’s only natural to do the same with the ratchets

They look like they will be a great addition to an already highly versatile setup. The one thing I might be concerned about is the screw in pins possibly coming loose and rattling out while driving down the road. Maybe if they had a small cable attached to keep from losing them. Hopefully it won't happen, but it was just something that came to mind to keep an eye on.

    My current tow truck a 1984 Chevy 3500 with a 21' aluminum roll back. I paid $1500 for the truck and I completely rebuilt the truck with a LBZ Duramax and Allison transmission. The truck had a under lift when I got it but it was a sling setup. I cut the end of the under lift off and rebuilt it into a conventional wheel lift and built my own wheel grids. The wheel grid pins I made are similar to what zacklift does except my pins are captured and spring loaded so I pull them out and give them a quarter turn to lock them in the out position and to lock them in the engaged position it's quarter turn as well. On the bottom side of the grid arms I made adjustable ball bearing detents that engage in holes on the bottom side so there is nothing to line up and the detent pressure can be adjusted with an allen wench.
    I was recovering from a spinal cord injury and I couldn't lift anything over 5 pounds or how long my recovery would take so I built a system to install, remove and store the wheel grids. I built hinged arms that attach to the wheel grids and I slide them off and fold the arms back up against the side of the truck frame under the deck on each side and lock in place.

Also when wheel lifting under transit bus not enough clearance for winch bar so welded a 3/4 drive socket on inboard side of winch. Then a 3/4 racket can be use to tie the wheel strap down

    I was thinking the pins would be spring loaded and fixed to the grids
    No thread that can back out , be damaged, or get stuck, and the pins can't get lost

      I'm also concerned about the threads getting fouled or loosening enough to bounce out. At least they're on top for inspection and maintenance.

    Casey showing the level of care for customers' vehicles that is far rarer than it should be.
    Mate, call me old-fashioned but I don't like those screwin pins. Yes, I know, even if they vibrate loose they still need to jump up and out but I'd never be happy without a positive locking mechanism such as a spring or mousetrap pin. That's just me and my OCD, you do you. Oh, and I built my underlift, it's edge up like the Zacklift as it just made more sense to me.
    You are lucky to be able to tow a pickup and a van/trailer/whatever combination on the wheel lift, we'd be in deep shit here Down Under doing that.
    Someone with a plasma table needs to make a left hand version of those ratchets for the conventional wheel lift. I'd do it but the freight to the States would kill it from here.

    Hey Casey regards your tie down ratchets weld a 3/4 socket on to the ratchet. Then use a ratchet bar on the socket this way you can work within a confined space. Luv your work🤠

  • @frankhibray2887
    @frankhibray2887 27 дней назад

    Casey, maybe if you make a beefed up U shaped bar to fit your belt tightng bar on the ratching device for you roll back wheel grid it may solve one problem, but create another by needing two different tightng bars, so weld the straight bar to the U bar make one bar. Just a idea, love your channel.

    Also something to notice about the Zaclift ratchets. When they designed that custom bracket for the weld on ratchets, they made the sapcing so that they can slide all the way out. You can see in the video that you can slide it to the very edge of the wheel grid, and its spaced far enough out that the bar still fits.
    On the roll back there isn't really enough clearance plus you would be fighting the pins.

    Congrats on the new wheel grids. 👍🏼 Glad to see your relationship with Zacklift is mutually beneficial. Totally off-topic, but for some reason the resolution on this video seems very low. Not sure if it's my system or connection, but I tried a few other random RUclips videos and none of them had the pixelation and fuzziness that this one does. Anybody else noticing the same thing?

    13:50 thanks for explaining the reasoning behind the "always pull the driveshaft/axles" bit. I keep forgetting how hard USA is on the whole liability thing. Now it makes sense why you just follow whatever manufacturer says even if not doing so wouldn't actually hurt anything

    • @CaseyLaDelle
      @CaseyLaDelle  28 дней назад +3

      Europeans always say how they only pull one axle shaft, or just leave it in neutral and everything is fine, but they also forget that part where we are very regularly towing down the highway at 60 to 70mph for hours on end.
      The fire truck tow for example was two hours down the road

    • @aitorror3659
      @aitorror3659 28 дней назад

      @@CaseyLaDelle yeah makes sense, here usually its around 50km to closest big city regardless where you are so I guess for that it really doesn't matter
      I've even flat towed automatic trans cars a few times down the road and they were perfectly fine, but all of that was less than 10km usually
