    Great video! This is the exact process I've been using to learn to sing more difficult songs, by tabbing them out on guitar first. Then I can play through the tab as a quick reference, rather than searching through the audio file for the right part, which tightens up my feedback loop for learning to sing it.

    I found out decades ago that I could figure out the melody better in context of playing chords (open usually). Why? I don't know for sure, but maybe because the melody contained notes from the underlying chord, reducing in effect the "search space."

    Great stuff. I m encouraged to practise scales again.
    at 59sh I began to play banjo, playing melody as my aging fisherman/ shearers hands are so slow at learning to get chords .
    As i progress i often guess the chords by the melody .

    This is the only way I play guitar now. I just could not master chords and strumming, and I haven't mastered playing melodies one note at a time, but I am so much better at that than anything else on guitar. I learn them off RUclips, one phrase at a time. It is fun and interesting, especially figuring out the easiest finger movements to hit the right notes, or moving it around on the fret board.

I can play hundreds of songs this way. but never actually learning the songs by memory. My idea was that if i can do this with ease, using embellishments i will make the simple melody sound good and interesting. I am now not sure if this is possible .I would really appreciate your thoughts on my "method" Cheers Mike

    great lesson, just a question . is it better to find the melody on on strings first or chords?? for example for hallelujah. the melody on a string is G to A which is moving up one tone but the chords are C to Am which is down tow tones, is kinda confusing for me

    • @justinguitar
      @justinguitar  2 года назад

      The exact melody will be on single notes while the chords of the key use several notes of that key at once. That doesn't mean you can only play notes of the chord you can play over. by default, the notes of the key will always work over the chord but some will work better than others. If you want to know how that works: check out this lesson about diatonic chords: www.justinguitar.com/guitar-lessons/chords-in-a-key-diatonic-triads-mt-421

    justin im sorry this is a great lesson but last module the transcribing lesson was very simple power chord songs then you went to this?!?! it doesnt seem to fit in the order of things. i cannot do it at all and im way beyond beginner level player. i mean maybe you shouldve talked us through how do it with some cheesy songs like london bridges or something. i'm not Esteban i cant figure out rising sun melody for the life of me......im not sure but it seems like intervals are more important than specific notes? anyhow i cant post for this video on the website for some reason so i came here

    I find it difficult to hear the melody in my head, and even when I do, as soon as I hit the note on the guitar it ruins the melody in my head.

    One thing that can happen is misheard or mis-remembered melodies. Often enough, you will find that your recollection of a melody is not spot-on when going back to the original.
