- The Koronus Expanse may very well be the most dangerous and mysterious territory of the Imperium of Man. To enter it is to step off the edge of the map, the edge of all knowledge, the edge of the abyss.

Thanks to OwlCat for helping replace all the personnel we lost on this investigation. Check out Warhammer 40,000 Rogue Trader here! roguetrader.owlcat.games/
"Though far dakka things are said to haunt even the orks."
Don't think I didn't catch that, ya lore-grot. When the great Grork gits back, he will 'ave a word with ya.
De Edtiz: I refer to ya using Dakka as a term for darkah, if it weren't as clear as dakka to ya face, if ya not be gittin' it.
thanks it is nice seeing you showing love to the koronus expanse , My father is also a rogue trader plying his trade in that sector.
Another awesome lore video as always Lore Masters!
I am here after Owlcat Games' Rogue Trader CRPG! It is really good!
If it doesn't have Tyranids, it can't be THAT terrifying
Oh that's so not the problem
The ghouls stars don't have tyranids
It doesn't have Tyranids _yet_
Pretty sure the tyranids would steer clear of the place
Oh contraire
Can't wait to explore the Expanse. Hope Owlcat does it the justice it deserves.
Played the Alpha, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Owlcat cares about lore.
@@shawngillogly6873 well that's good to hear
It'll just be buggy as all get out for the entirety of its existence. Just gotta push through the jank and remember to have multiple save files.
@@Staringathesun The state that WotR came out in compared to the state Kingmaker was in leads me to think they have learned a lot between their first and second game, and gives me what I feel like is justified hope that this game will be in good shape from the start.
@@Staringathesun Sorry to break your heart, but I've played full release AAA games in worse state and less stable than Rogue Trader's Alpha.
I love the rak gol, they really fit the grimdark narrative and are a nice threat specific to that sector. I wish we had more lore on them, since they exist on a smaller scale compared to other factions they are not out of place, i really think they're neat as a primary antagonist of that setting.
In the Rogue Trader RPG they're definitely one of the scarier factions imho. My players prefer dealing with freebooterz or dark eldar over those things.
The Slaugth are also pretty terrifying.
I was hoping you guys would mention the Slaugh. They're such a terrifying otherworldy xeno I'd love for you guys to cover them.
Theres other lore channels out there. More specifically ones that actually cover the cannon lore, and don't just read from the wiki and make their own history up.
@@marthastewart3612 Goddamn, Martha
@@marthastewart3612 when’d they make history up?
I have several of the old rogue trader rpg books and all the lore in them is amazing. I really hope the new game captures the sense of scale and originality that went into creating the Koronus expanse.
I'm running a campaign now. It's a tough system to play or GM, but it has held some of my favorite campaigns.
@@wescoleman6390 also expansions like battlefleet koronus are sooo nice. If only the warp travel rules weren't so bad.
@@wescoleman6390 Tough systems to play as a GM just requires a GM to be just as willing to go off the rails as the players.
One simple version to do so: have a bunch of "actors" set up precampaign, or do then during early stuff, so that you can basically have a bunch of "important offscreen NPCS" that react to whatever is going on with nothing more than basic architypes or stereotypical bland things for the purposes of stuff until the players actually get strong enough to interact with one of them directly. Until that point, you can paint anyone who actually comes up by name to the players as a stereotype since that may be what the people of the world or nation know them as. Only when they become actually important do you need to give them any sort of depth or plot. You cam even go so far as to make one of them the final big bad, based on what the players do.
It is basically a D&D reverse version of a Holmes/Doyle quote: "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth." Where you let the players go free for a time, and as they either interact with any of your multitude of stereotypes, bringing them into focus, and sometimes either to justice or helping them reclaim something, those that have not be interacted with remain the potential cast for whatever finale you may be thinking of.
@@wildsandwich it wouldn’t be warp travel if it wasn’t the worst thing ever lol
well, now the entire imperium nihilus is like the koronus expanse
The way it’s enclosed by Warp storms reminds me of the Delphic Expanse from Star Trek: Enterprise, perhaps in other ways to
You cut out, user... um... likely Adeptus Mechanicus from your name scheme. Perhaps your transmission systems require additional oils and and the usual holy percussive maintenance?
Oh, give me a home where the groxes roam.
Where the Strixis and the Rogue Traders play.
Where seldom is heard, a heretical word,
And my skin is flagellated all day.
Home, home on the Expanse.
Where the Strixis and the Rogue Traders play.
Where seldom is heard a heretical word,
And my skin is flagellated all day.
Where the taint ain't too high, the warp storms not bad,
The rak´gol are playful and mild.
Oh, I would not exchange this home on the Expanse,
For all the hive cities so wild.

@@andreykuzmin4355 thank you! I knew the lyrics seemed familiar.
Ah, the Koronus Expanse. Setting for many of the early FFG 40k rpgs. My group established a running alt-canon based on our campaigns, and wound up with a Koronus Sector dominated by Rogue Trader House Thracian and its political allies, including loyalist Blood Ravens, Imperial Navy elements that were fanatically devoted to a living saint from the dynasty, and a planet of tanks created using social engineering of nomads by way of supply drops of armor, fuel, and munitions that forced them to compete with each other for survival and making for a prime recruiting ground for elite Guard formations. Throw in the Forge World Hephaestus and its secret program of Xenos reverse engineering for some fun tech heresy with a thin veneer of respectability.
A planet of tanks? Color me interested.
I am here after Owlcat Games' Rogue Trader CRPG! It is really good!
I like to think that somewhere in the Koronus Expanse the remnants of the Interex stills exists.
That would be a fun narrative. Especially if you have a harmonious society that has observed the Imperium.
maybe a lost DAOT world still fully inhabited
I once used the Koronus Expanse as a setting for a fanfiction I never ended up writing. In it, I came up with the idea that part of the reason for the decline of the Yu'Vath Empire was that they were stopping, at great cost, very damaging incursions originating from the Koronus Expanse. Elements from the Angevin Crusade would encounter references to a menace over the course of their campaign, though no Imperial forces ever encountered it directly.
The only indications of its actions were destroyed Yu'Vath ships and worlds bordering the Koronus Expanse, with an unusually large amount of the destruction seemingly caused by macro scale grav weapons. Complications would increase with the random deaths of valuable psykers, navigators, and astropaths alongside an unusual decrease in cult activity. On the cusp of victory over the Yu'Vath few would suspect the menace, and fewer still would theorize (though never openly) that it recognized an adversary that could subverted, rather than bludgeoned into submission.
A very interesting idea.
This will be the first truly fantastic modern 40k game. It can’t come soon enough. I have all the Rogue Trader rpg books and the lore is epic
I am here after Owlcat Games' Rogue Trader CRPG! It is really good!
Just remember, when you gaze into the night sky there are untold nasties looking right back at you 😀
Good, I could use something to pad my killboard stats with.
I really love LOVE all the 40k content. Thank you
Sounds like a place that could use a permanent Adeptus Astartes presence. We ought to make such a petition to the High Lords whenever the next Founding happens.
would probably need like 50 chapters
@@Aristaios I think one is enough for the long-term, and two for the short-term.
Too bad Hive Fleet Leviathan and (especially) the Great Rift put the Koronus Expanse a hell of a lot lower on the Imperium's priority list than it was before, and it was already very low. The Imperium can't spare the already extremely low number of available Astartes (millions at most) on an isolated, unstable, undevelopped and unimportant region of space. However if miraculously the Necrons manage to close the Great Rift and the Astronomican's reach and potency somehow increased, the archeotech found in the Heathen Stars alone might justify a massive crusade which would lead to the Expanse becoming a proper Imperial Sector
But hey atleast there is a lone Space Wolf along with some chaos marines
As far as the 40k universe goes, Winterscale's Realm seems like not the worst deal. Sure, forces human and beyond can still threaten your life, and no doubt chaos' taint can still be felt in some regions, but if I had to choose between a life of surviving on a frontier land or on almost any other of humanity's world's I'll go with the former.
Plus no Tyranids or Orks, so really you have the best odds of a normal, non-tortuous death.
Wait but there are orcs in the expanse tho
@@landonwyndham979 I didn't think they're in sizeable numbers in Winterscale's Realm, though
The templin lnstitute please do the video on the plumbers from Ben 10
I would love that!
What I like the most about the 40k universe is that everything is so far over the top, that it makes even the most extreme competing sci-fi of the same genre look meek in comparison. Best of all, the lore itself is so descriptive that you can really imagine the scale of it all!
Agreed. W40K is one of the few settings that properly address the sheer scale of the information/logistical challenges a civilization would have on a galactic scale. And the scary thing is that even W40K is Way, WAY low balling the scale of this.
Just as an example, our solar system alone could support well over a quintillion humans. Now apply that to millions of solar systems...
the orks are bizarre, the tyranids are terrifying and the imperium is straight up evil but the expanse is the only warhammer lore that made me feel excited to see. despite it being unknown there is something comforting about going somewhere not knowing if 10,000,000 creatures are ready to devower you.
feels like 18-century high sea exploration yo ho and a bottle of rum style.
Basically yeah lmao. That's to me what makes space shit awesome because it's immediately like the 15-1700s in terms of exploration and adventure
Always here for more 40k content
me too
Yeah!!
Ah, the Koronus expanse... A place near and dear to my heart. Almost as much as Calixis Sector itself. I do believe it should be noted that certain rumours- or rather, legends, imply that Koronus Expanse may have been explored by the Haarlock Dynasty long before the Imperium arrived in the Calixis Sector, much less discovered the Maw. The dynasty was one with many secrets, and many treasures from beyond known space, after all... And they seemed to know much more about the Expanse than they ever revealed to the Imperium as a whole. Alas, those secrets disappeared with Erasmus Haarlock, last of his line, kinslayer and the night traveller. Perhaps that is for the best: Some secrets were never meant to be unearthed by mortal hands.
The Koronus Expanse - truly the very definition of the word unknown, with undiscovered wonders and infinite horrors coexisting side by side....
I hope you'll do some more videos on Rogue Trader soon.
Interesting place. Essentially Wild West vibes with Siberian colonisation vibes too.
Can definitely tell it was designed for a tabletop RPG but that isn't a bad thing in my opinion.
It's definitely nice to have somewhere where the Imperium is just another power rather than the power.
You'd think this channel would stay away from Warhammer 40k now 🤣🤣
"Without the scratching of a tedious scribe’s quill there is no history. Events both great and terrible may pass unmarked and unremembered and so leave us only with scraps of what was. These fragments of memory are what fools call history and the wise call lies." - Sejabus Morn's From The Lost Imperial Past, 789.M41
"Lo, I see that which is beyond. I see the faces of pale moons and the fire of lost stars. I see the void un-walked and the waiting dark. I see the void that is my home and to which I return with hope and fear." -- reputed words of unknown Rogue Trader departing Port Wander
Would love to see a video on the Adeptus Mechanicus!
We’ve lead fleets and armies, we’ve purged heretics and Orcs through the hives and foundries, but now we can be treasure hunters in 40K… I can’t wait.
I remember playing a short Rogue Trader campaign in which our ship left Port Wander, galavanted across the Koronus Expanse for 10-11 years, then made a warp jump back through the Maw only to arrive the day before we originally left.
Warp travel is crazy.
@_TheTemplinInstitute NAY YOU FIEND
Is this even canon?
Would love to see an investigation of the Screaming Vortex!
Then again, not sure if the Templin has the personnel to sacrifice... er... I mean spare.
Would be great to see some warhammer fantasy human realms, some less explore like Tilea or maybe an elector County.
I don't know if you take requests, suggestions, but I think these series/works might have potential for you to make interesting videos out of them:

• Legend of Zelda

Demesne is pronounced (and is an alternative spelling for) domain.
Star Wars: Hive of Scum and Villainy.
40k: Ours is 10x worse at LEAST, and has the symbol of authority to boot.
Star Wars: Sometimes people go insane from looking at hyperspace?
40K: wait, you can actually LOOK at your FTL without multiple defense systems and anti-demonic systems without going insane in less than a MINUTE?
Star Wars: well, yes,, but we have the GALAXY GUN.
40k: Hmm, impressive. I want one.
Unexpected Schlock Mercenary: Tough beans, we are using ours against Andromeda. Powered by the galactic core in its entirety just to prevent our galaxy from being wiped completely clean. Stupid Dark Matter beings. Also, do you even know how to use gravitic technology properly? Where are your gravy beams? Where are your long guns? Where are your terraport drives? Weapons that teleport themselves INTO any vessel lacking interdiction is like, 5 generations ago for us.
I love hearing 40k lore here on this fantastic channel!

never been here this early, it nice
Damn it, Templin Institute, I come to this channel to marvel and wonder at worlds known and unknown, not be reminded of my sapphire blue testicles!
But seriously though, great video! Also, 'Desmesne' is pronounced the same way as 'Domain'; IIRC it's the root word from which 'domain' comes from.
I do greatly enjoy your Warhammer content, both 40k, and Fantasy/AoS. I just wanted to say that I love your content, both in format, visuals, and dialogue.
I think it would be very interesting if you made videos on the History of Eve Online. I think that there are a great deal of things that could be gleaned from the player driven nature of the game. I understand it would be a great deal of work, even compared to the immense about of effort put into your normal videos, but I wanted to leave an interesting suggestion.
I am here after Owlcat Games' Rogue Trader CRPG! It is really good!
Ahhhh, the Expanse. I hold the better part of a dozen worlds in that region. Make me stupid rich, but by the throne do I have to fight to hold what I have. Voidmaster, load my baneblade into the boarding torpedo!

Can you do the shadow and bones series and the genshin impact lore please ♥️
Good to hear they took the FFG setting made for their line of RPGs and made it canon.
I have organised and started a 40K crusade campaign with 9 friends, thank you for these and the GSC as they have helped shape it
I know where our next vacation will be... Kids, kids? . . . Kids? . . .

Wait, I’m confused by these timelines. The first half or so of the video makes it sound like it was discovered and somewhat settled millennia ago. They mention the wealthy descendants of the fella who found the rich part so how was the place only just found?
Now this looks interesting.
I'm launching a rogue trader rpg table and this is the perfect introduction to the koronus expanse.
