Hi Mike. Is this the Grand Hammer version or the other one. I know there are 2 models. One is around $499 and the Grand Hammer is over $800. I’m curious as to how the Grand Hammer version feels and plays. My Arturia 88 with the Fatar keybed feels amazing but the keys are a little noisy. Can you review the Grand version of this board? Thanks again!
I just want to mention that the info about the two ports having to be SL Studio port 2 made it super easy for my to set up my device. I send you a big thank you from cold and rainy Belgium 🇧🇪👍🏻
I agree with everything you said JM, I have SL88 STUDIO for 3 Years and it is an absolutely amazing MIDI controller. My favorite keybed Fatar TP100 LR. I am glad that you fall in love with this incredible piece of gear, especially if we know how many instruments and Midi controllers have gone through your studio and your video reviews. In Every VST the instrument you'll have a magic feeling, believe me.
Hi Miljan. I've been searching about weighted midi keyboards and I've seend that some people complained about the keys getting really noisy. Did you have any trouble after some time?
@@Lalairu No, From the first day all keys are quiet.....and much better than 1st gen Arturia Keylab 88 , although both models share the same Fatar keys TP100 LR. It's just that Studiologic took everything a lot more serious than Arturia's 1st gen Keylab 88, which is noisy, Velocity Curve is worse than that of SL88 STUDIO, even the color is removed by itself From Arturia!!!!!!..... and much more expensive than SL88. Native Instrument KK S88 has the same keys....but NI is 3 times more expensive, because Soft Integration and Displays....SL88 Studio is great....
I’ve had this board since February, 2018 and it is HANDS DOWN THEE ABSOLUTE BEST 88 key controller in its price range‼️ Around the time I purchased it, no one had it available to physically play but I seen Anomalie playing one in his videos (if you know who he is, then you know it’s a quality controller). The board has still held up and in fact, I went on to purchase the 73 key version. Same keybed and it fits in a 61 key keyboard case, yes a 73 key board fits in a 61 key keyboard case. 😱 All my friends who play it, love the keybed too‼️
Got one of these about 9 months ago. Great bit of kit. Love the customisation options in the software, great feeling keys and a whole world of possibilities through MIDI and DAWs. Got it to start learning piano properly and would thoroughly recommend it to anybody who doesn't need a standalone instrument.
@@ciararespect4296 MIDI keyboards need a PC/ laptop and a DAW software program to produce sound. But the variety of instrument plugins for DAWs means they are extremely versatile and infinitely customisable.
@@nwb3 I can’t really advise on that. I haven’t properly played an actual piano in over 20 years and my skills were very limited back then. It does feel pretty nice. If you want the closest real piano feel that they do then maybe the SL88 Grand by Studiologic as it has wooden keys and proper weighted hammer action. More on the pricey side though.
Own it... Love it! I've been using it in my studio (only, not for any gigs) for about 2 years. It really is pound for pound one of the best midi pianos out there. Now, I'm gonna get the Studiologic Numa Compact 2 for the internal sounds and for gigs. Thanks for the video! 😎🎶
Another great video John! I also had the MAudio hammer 88 but found it too heavy for what I was doing. After lugging around my Roland fp-2 piano for years to use as a MIDI controller, I was glad to find the SL73 open-box for $350. There’s nothing like real hammer action on a great keybed. Keep it real my friend !
Demonstration of the joystick has most likely convinced me to get this. Grew up using joystick style synths and acoustic pianos. I’ll probably get the sl73 for gigs.
I own its predecessor: the Acuna 88 which is a beautiful master kb, with a perfect piano action..they spend a lot of time in the research of a perfect piano key mechanism simulation, and made a few patents from their projects
Ever since I had and (recklessly/foolishly) sold my SL990 I realized that shopping for a keboard is actually shopping for a keybed. You can spend $5K on a NORD Stage 2 or you can buy a Studiologic and take it apart. The only problems with Studiologic is that you will have issues with velocity inconsistencies, so you need to do your own programming.
I have the grand, it has never left my home. I must say, support is very poor if you have a problem. Unless you live in the LA area you will be forced to ship it to them(at your cost) to get any warranty work done. I am 5 weeks out just for new compass to get a new control board since mine decided to crap out randomly. I decided it was easier to buy the new control board rather than spend money and time on a hard case and shipping.
I was considering to buy this one, so I could learn to play the piano and more. I can't afford two keyboards so I need something that has "both worlds". I was considering a Yamaha P45 until I began to be interested in synths xD now I need everything, and this one seems perfect. thank you for your reviews John, I bought the Korg microkey 37 months ago because your reviews helped me, it helped me to begin learning how to use DAWs and such. How does the Rhodes emulation sound? It's my fav electric piano.
Thank you. I need a how to SL88 for dummies. LOL. I have the keyboard, still trying to figure it out. At least I'm having fun playing Unify from Plugin Guru.
picked one of these up to finally have something to practice piano technique as well as have full size hammer action keys. looking forward to enjoying this thing!
Because of your great detailed review, I chose the SL88 Studio purchase for our church back in 2020 and always had it since! Go John Mike! #omnispheresoundgroup
Hey John, Thx much for Demi this product. Been waiting for you to for quite some time. I bought the SL73 mid 2019 & love it. I store this n my 61 bag. I also have my Roland A88 as well n my home studio. The SL-73 , I use it for gig purposes.. Again , thx so much!!! 👍🏽
I got the SL88 Grand 2 years ago for $450, it was a steal. They wanted 350 additional for shipping so I just drove up to LA to pick it up. By far the best controller i've ever used. Wooden weighted keys, beautiful key-bed!
@@PeterPrism hahah gotcha! I’m debating on which one right now, but I’m the not the best at all with like software and stuff so I’m leaning towards the hammer just cause it’ll be easy to set up! But I do like the sl studio better I think so idk
I have the SL88 and had to get this repaired due to noisy keys as it was under warranty. However the problem has re occurred after a couple months of use, however I’m out of warranty! Might try the Grand as reviews are pretty decent!
Friends! Racking my head between SL Studio and Grand. SL Studio is pleasant to the touch, but over time it will become easier, I actually saw this TP100 with my own eyes and keyboard masters and there is a lot of fluidity like Vaseline, so it feels tougher than SL GRAND, but lighter in weight. I played on the old MIDI Studiologic SL-990 Pro there TP40 GH - I really liked it, it still works without any problems. The fact is that the SL Grand now costs about $ 800. But there are a lot of bad reviews about the keyboard itself ... but at the same time, it is positioned as a keyboard of the premium segment. OK. We have a purely $ 1000 Doepfer PK88 GH without Case keyboard and are praised as one of the most reliable and indestructible keyboards around. A reasonable question: Maybe in SL Grand (Fatar TP40 Wood) the quality of parts is worse than on Doepfer (TP40 GH) since there is such a difference in price + considering the reviews? This is my dilemma.
John, I really liked the keyboard and wanted to love it. The keybed was a tad bit on the hard side. Unfortunately, within a month, B5 started sticking. I returned it and swapped it for something else. I wish the Fatar 100 was more reliable.
I would recommend anyone to try this before you buy. I had the 73 key version of this, and found the key action very, very heavy. I also struggled with the software setting it up, but once you get your head around it works fine but also make sure you switch it on in the right order. I ended up selling it because of the action. In contrast the other keyboards I have had before, during or since having the SL73 (SL-880 Pro, Korg SV1, Yamaha CP4 & Yamaha CP73) have all been far superior in key feel.
I agree with you on this - the action is extremely heavy. My problem with it is - when trying to play softly, the key will "bounce" off the switch. There are software fixes to the "short-long" sound this makes; however, you still feel the key bounce and it throws me off. I can't get used to it.
@@Lalairu funny you asked . The middle C is intermittently cutting out. I have warranty service scheduled for tomorrow. This is after me playing it nearly everyday since Oct 2019
You gotta try the studio grand. That feel is ridiculous! But the old school Roland a-88 is my favorite keybed ever. Hopefully you get to review the A88 mk2.
Roland actions are amazing even at entry level. Unfortunately the A-88 is too long for my 3-tier stand. 88 keys AND the controls are to the left of the keys! I don't understand why they won't put the controls in the middle above the keys except for tradition. If they aren't going to do that I wish they would at least put the same action in a 73 or 64 key midi board. Until then the Studiologic 88 Grand looks like the better option for me when I have the money. More keys than I need but at least the controls are above the keys so I can fit it in my set up. Also I believe the Grand has wooden keys whereas the A-88 keys at plastic? Not that that matters to me if it's weighted and graded.
I got a SL73 with shorter keyboard but the same construction. The keys and programmable aspects are great for DAW use, but the three sloppy miniature joysticks are useless and too fiddly - there's no friction or feel. They need to be stiffer and longer - or include a couple of big edge control knobs or instead all controls as long sliders, but as least 2. I may have to modify....
Who needs 88 keys on a MIDI controller though? If I needed a controller and didn't want or couldn't afford the fully weighted [edit: and graded] keys on the Studiologic Grand, I'd just get the 73 key version of this which is even better value imo.
Alec as a piano player, I prefer a midi controller with 88 keys...but also for those that gig or play at churches...so many possibilities with an 88-key controller...now if you are just a BeatMaker and you just need to play a few chords then any 49 or 61 key controller will do
@@Johnmike Yeah but my issue is I love realistic graded piano actions, but don't need more than 73 keys when I have an octave shifter. I don't think there is a single keyboard out there with a graded action that has less than 88 keys. I don't mind having 88 but not worth the extra money for me if I'm not getting a better action than on the 73. I believe the 88 Studio has the same action as the 73.
@@AGAU1022 Try the Roland RD64, hard to find maybe but a wonderful option and excellent weighted action on 64 keys! For me 64 is not enough and onlybreasin I did not buy. May be the only option with a small keyboard and weighted keys not sure.
@@Lee-sf4fv You're right. I forgot about that one! When I was trying to buy one I couldn't find one available online. I think it probably is the only one. At the moment I have a 73 key board that is weighted but not graded. I probably will get an 88 key graded midi controller like the StudioLogic Grand if I ever have enough money. Just not worth the extra money for me at the moment especially if the action is not graded. I actually do prefer more keys than less keys for at home use, as long as the mod wheels won't be further away as a result, and as long as it is not longer than 51 inches, but for many people not worth the extra money, space and weight.
@Johnmike can you help me...i connect my SL88 Studio with a 3 meter long USB cable using Kontakt and it keeps disconnecting after a while (not power off but no sound) had to switch off and back on to continue making sounds...i'm on Win11 and USB power savings are off on all regards. Still can't find what's wrong with my SL88. It happens on AC powered or USB powered as well.
Hi! Peace be with you. Can I control my Yamaha Motif ES Rack with this board? Change and pick sounds and change parameters with the SL software. Thanks in advance for your reply.
How do i actually load sounds into the SL Editor?! It's so basic but i just cant figure it out. Plays like a regular MiDI controller out the DAW but loading up these patches?! Cant figure out how to do jt
Definitely want to see you Spice this baby up. I think it would be cool if you could do a wrap on the back of the board, so it had some cool "JM" theme on it. If this were mine I think I'd go for a military green look, paint it in a matte finish, and then take my beloved BeatStep Pro and also military green it out.
@@Johnmike The Studio version of this board uses Fatar TP100 keybed which is the same as the Arturia Lab88, Kurz Forte SE. The studio logic controller versions is seated better than the others. BUT, the Grand version of this board has the BEST weighted keybed. It uses the Fatar TP-40 Wood, which is used on Nord Stage and Kurz Forte. Studiologic seated there's a bit better. It's not as heavy as Yamaha's weighted keybeds but not as light as the Nords. Feels more solid than Roland RD2000 & Korg SV2. hope this helps.
I had this board for about 3 or for years and it is definitely a great board. When I first bought it the software was new and software was buggy and didn’t work like it should so I gave up on it because I didn’t need it for my purposes. I only got rid of it because I wanted to board wit internal sounds as a backup when my computer would act up.
Thank you for the great review! It's been instrumental (pun intended) in helping me to make a decision. I do have a couple of questions: First, what is the benefit of a MIDI IN jack on a controller? Secondly, if the SL Editor software supplants the hardware control knob on the device, is the control knob only for live performance? Thanks again!
Hello, I'm very new to MIDi software and controlers. Is this conectable to Logic Pro, as I'm planning to get sound from my headphones/speakers that are connected to Logic Pro on my Macbook. Thanks!
Since I bought this keyboard, should arrive today, i wonder. I hear a lot of people talk about it is heavy playing. Also the Grand has a different keybed whis is graded. The heaviest key on the grand is about the same as every key on the studio. This leads me to believe it should be possible to grade it yourself DIY. It would only involve removing weigt from keys. Or am I thinking too simple? In the dr mix tour they show the grand has a notch somewhere which makes the 'grand' effect. It might be possible to DIY this yourself on the Studio?
Hi @Johnmike...i bought the Amazing SL88 Studio because of this video and so far so good, apart from...and i hope you can help me a bit here...i cannot seem to send all 127 velocity to Kontakt for any of my Libraries...How come? the harder i press or stroke a key, i can't seem to reach 127...for most i got it to 124...Thanks...Sorry for my Bad English!
These are two totally different price brackets. s88 has way more features, and definitely go for it if you got the $$ and use Native Instrument stuff. If you just want a solid controller and want to save the $$, go with this.
Hey John I'm trying to pick between the Studiologic SL88 Studio S-Series and the Arturia KeyLab 88 MkII . What do you recommend? I'm interested to learn classical, jazz music , which is closer to the real piano . I'm not interested controls or software which feels more real
John Mike hi! I have a Yamaha P45 USB MIDI which I use as a MIDI controller with a Macbook Pro 2019, Ableton Live and NI Noire... I'm not happy with the overall response of it (maybe Noire is the problem?) also I feel a little bit of latency. I want to travel and tour with the piano so do you think it will be better the SL 88?
Damn, first the Keylab 88 Essential, then the SL88! You're reading my mind about the controllers I'm targeting lol I'd love to see a long term review of both! Fun fact: Studiologic is actually a FATAR owned company! So you're basically getting the keybed from the manufacturing source.
Hi JM. Highly recommended the magnetic computer plate to go with it and the official SL softcase. Thanks for endorsing this great keyboard. One thing I wonder about having this for a while is occasionally I get notes that kind of mute instead of ringing out. Not sure if it's my sustain pedal technique or its key bounce. After you have played for a good while would be pleased to know your thoughts. Best regards
I have this problem as well, I think it’s key bounce and creates a double input which can be extremely frustrating when editing midi. I’ve been trying to find a fix but have found nothing on it.
@@idek8381 Yes, I have found this esp. with Keyscape. I move the note and find the double input underneath and delete. But also with Logic/Keyscape I find that sometimes if the recorded note is too short then on playback it doesn't ring out even though the sustain pedal is down. I have to make the note a little longer. Really frustrating, esp as sometimes normal playback is ok and it's not until you bounce the track that the problem can be heard.
thanks for the awesome review! - the Arturia 88 MKII also has a Fatar Keybed and looks like they both use the TP/100LR so i guess it comes down to analog lab/daw control?
I have had one of these for a while. However there is an annoying problem that i cant seem to resolve. When you first power on the unit it doesnt load your altered default preset 1 for your custom velocity curve. You have to choose your patch after powering on which i sometimes forget to do. Do you have this problem with yours?
hi I bought the sl88 studio keyboard today and I have a problem, when I want to play the last notes of the keyboard, from the F of the last octave, the keyboard does not send midi signals and therefore does not sound, any solution? Thank you
Thanks for reviewing the Studio keyboard, I have one (18 months) and love it. I've been disappointed that the SL88 Grand is frequently demonstrated and critiqued on RUclips and the Studio totally overlooked. I thought I had bought the second class version and was about to go out and trial the Grand to find out if I has missed something until the CV lock down halted that. The triple sensor allows great articulation but demands good technique. I use it exclusively with my iPad running the Colossus Piano app with their best piano and Steinberg UR22 mkII interface, these give an amazing piano audio sound. Highly recommended!
Hey John I have a question that I have been trying to figure out for 2 weeks. I first appreciate your video! My question is I use Ableton live, and I can't seem to program the midi controller to change the sounds, but also, when I use Mixcraft, it automatically maps and I'm able to select different sounds and change the volume from the midi controller. Can you help with this? Thanks
Amazing review man. If It happens that you have a Roland fp10 at hand please make a review of it because it costs as much as this keyboard and i heard It has an amazing keybed and also built in sounds so you can use it both as a piano and as a midi controller
The action on the FP-10 is amazing. It actually felt better than their more expensive models to me, but maybe that is because it was brand new and the others are older. However, bear in mind that it doesn't have pitch bend or mod wheels (I believe) and only has one pedal input (and I'm not sure whether this pedal input can do continuous MIDI expression or just sustain). If you don't need those things, great. If you do need the wheels but not the peds, you could combine the FP-10 with a smaller midi controller that has mod wheels, like an M32, or something even smaller and cheaper. However, built-in sounds might not be worth it if you are always plugged into your computer anyway. The Roland A-88 has the same action (at least on paper) and is a dedicated midi controller, and the Grand version of the Studiologic is weighted and graded too.
@@AGAU1022 thanks a lot. Unfortunately in my country the Roland a88 and the studiologic sl88 grand cost double the price of the fp10 so they are not quite comparable and completely out of budget. The sl88 studio costs the same as the fp10( around 400 euros) and, if i've understood well, it has a sligtly worse action and does not include integrated sounds or speaker but has the pitch and mod wheel and more pedal options. Am I right?
@@theblackjackchannel1082 Yes correct, tho it depends if you like a more realistic graded piano action or don't mind an ungraded action. Some people prefer ungraded actions like on the Studio. I prefer graded.
I can't find any good Doc or video on how the SL editor gets its sounds. I have ableton live but not grasping how to get that referenced by the editor. Any recommendations? Btw...your vids are very good.
Hi John.....Got my SL73 yesterday....Like the feel of my piano samples and going from a 61 note to 73 keyboard is great. But a bit disappointed that the stick will only allow one note of pitch bend up or down with my external h/w synths. I've calibrated the sticks as per the manual but can't find any way of increasing the pitch bend range. Have written to their tech support-. Am I missing something? Plus, I think the menu system absolutely sucks with those buttons, totally confusing....Greets...Mike
I just bought this keyboard, but trying to use something as simple as bringing the volume down from 127 does nothing. How do I make this work? And is there any other software would you recommend that makes great piano sounds? I have some, but nothing great.
Yo lo compre hace 9 meses y me da problemas a los 8 minutos de prenderlo empiezan a salir rallitas en la pantalla asta tener muchas rallas internas a que se debe eso?
John Mike, I'm loving your channel! Would this keyboard be overkill for an iPad setup? Primarily I see myself using the iPad as a sound module, like you've done with the Korg module pro. Thanks
@@Johnmike Thanks for the reply! Cool. I'm not a piano player, but I do appreciate the feel of a good set of keys. And I do NOT use a DAW, use a Tascam Portastudio in my setup. Every now and think of getting something like an old Yamaha MOTIF. But I have a bunch a great bunch of iPad apps. I've thought about a KeyStep, but really prefer full-size keys and a good feel, and don't need the modular sequencing stuff. Anyway, it sounds like you're saying a StudioLogic would be worth it -- even just for iPad. If you have other tips or gear I should look at, let me know. See you!

Great keyboard I have been contemplating a good while to replace my Maudio pro 88 dinosaur. Question- I tried out a used Komplete S88 Mark 1 at Guitar Center (previous model from latest) and the keybed was amazing compared to most other major brands. The word out there is Studiologic makes the keybed for Komplete but very little info is given as to exact keybed model and when there is info it doesnt make much sense. Does the Studiologoc SL88 Studio have the same keybed as the Komplete S88 ? If not can you share any knowledge you may have? Thanks alot in advance.
Hey JM thanks for the video! Scrolling thru is the only way to call up patches? and it looks like you most likely would need a separate midi controller with sliders to control the volume of external modules and computer? Thx JM
Yeah, I would like to know what your long term review of the SL88 Studio is as well. I've been in the market for a hammer action midi keyboard and I almost bought the SL73, but I keep finding stories of these breaking or giving up 3-4 months in. I can't tell how much of it is legit issues, or how much of it is subjective opinions about the keybed.
@@DavidGossettMusic the issues are well known, not so well known is how to fix it at home without having to use the warranty every 5 months^^ "Fatar TP/100LR on SL88 Studio- the sensors, disassembling, modification" is the video you want if you buy the SL88. Knowing this, I would still buy it. And a screwdriver.
@@pikachu-hs5zz The Grand version has the more expensive keybed afaik, but it all comes down to how it has been built into the Grand. If they tried to save a Dollar on that one, too, it will have the same issues after a few months. I can't afford the Grand so I didn't check it out.
@@couchcamperTM you're so right. plus more expensive doesn't mean better imo. i tried the grand out in the music store and it feels even heavier than my proper piano, which i didn't like but i guess that depends on each individual player. so i'll probably get the studio. thanks!
I’ve just bought this keyboard. I also bought the studiologic 3 pedals board but can’t work out how to get it working. Which port? How to get the right pedal to sustain? Any help would be appreciated
Good luck. This Midi controller has tons of issues, look into it. LCD screen corruption, click clacking really loud keys, dud keys etc. If I were you, I'd return it and instead get the M-Audio Hammer 88. It's almost guaranteed to get an issue due to quality control being so bad. You will certainly experience really loud keys because it's a fault of the materials used.
I love it also, but!!! Adter about 10months.... suddenly, the LSD just died and got totaly blank, so I have to rely on the software to change its settings... I've read about it but thought, as I wouldn't be moving it a lot, it may not happen to me. Well, 10 months later, it happened. But, for the price, is a very good midi controller with the sense of a real piano. Please update this when it happens to you, is something StudioLogic has to address.
Just curious. Would it be possible to export custom presets and make them available for people to download? I'm hoping for something like that cause I don't feel talented enough to tweak anything myself.
Great video sir, thanks for the upload. Its either this or ye hammer 88 from m-audio. The big factor for me is integrating with ableton live suite. Which is easiest to incorporate into ableton live? Thanks again
Nice review... i really forward to buy a 73 SL in the near future. It's just so simple and well layout. I will try to use to it as a midi controller for my Nord Electro 6d. How about the keybed felling? Is it too heavy as i read in many other reviews? Thanks.

😱 All my friends who play it, love the keybed too‼️
Anomalie is one of my favorite board players hands down!
NlineMusick I own the SL73 & love it & also own a Roland A88 as well!!!!💯
Got one of these about 9 months ago. Great bit of kit. Love the customisation options in the software, great feeling keys and a whole world of possibilities through MIDI and DAWs. Got it to start learning piano properly and would thoroughly recommend it to anybody who doesn't need a standalone instrument.
How do you get speakers for it ?
@@ciararespect4296 MIDI keyboards need a PC/ laptop and a DAW software program to produce sound. But the variety of instrument plugins for DAWs means they are extremely versatile and infinitely customisable.
@@darthvalkyr Would you say it feels similar to an actual piano?
@@nwb3 I can’t really advise on that. I haven’t properly played an actual piano in over 20 years and my skills were very limited back then. It does feel pretty nice. If you want the closest real piano feel that they do then maybe the SL88 Grand by Studiologic as it has wooden keys and proper weighted hammer action. More on the pricey side though.
@@darthvalkyr Ok thanks
Own it... Love it! I've been using it in my studio (only, not for any gigs) for about 2 years. It really is pound for pound one of the best midi pianos out there. Now, I'm gonna get the Studiologic Numa Compact 2 for the internal sounds and for gigs. Thanks for the video! 😎🎶
Yup that’s on my list too!
I'm using the SL73 since end of 2020 as second board for my Yamaha Modx 6. I like this combination.
Just picked this up. Thanks for this video. This keyboard feels amazing.

I got the SL88 Grand 2 years ago for $450, it was a steal. They wanted 350 additional for shipping so I just drove up to LA to pick it up. By far the best controller i've ever used. Wooden weighted keys, beautiful key-bed!

I have the SL88 and had to get this repaired due to noisy keys as it was under warranty. However the problem has re occurred after a couple months of use, however I’m out of warranty! Might try the Grand as reviews are pretty decent!
John Mike you play so beautifully!
Thanks!
This was very informative. I have the Hammer 88 and was curious. Can’t wait to try this one.
Thank you very much for such a well explained review!!
Nice review and explanation. Subscribed! 👍🏻
Bought one because of your reviews. Hope the feel is what you say it is bro! Thanks
When i first got mine, my knuckles were sore for a month. Now my hands are stronger than ever and cant see myself ever going back.
Any issues with the keys after 9 months?

You gotta try the studio grand. That feel is ridiculous! But the old school Roland a-88 is my favorite keybed ever. Hopefully you get to review the A88 mk2.
Brandon Forte' it’s on the list!
I got it and put it back in the box after 10 minutes. I exchanged it for the SL88 GRAND. I love the way it feels.
Hello) Why? Such a big difference? Can you describe please!
This is the same keybed as the Nord Stage 2 EX76 HP and the Stage 3 76HP, right? From what I read, TP100LR is the keybed on all. Thanks, John Mike!
I believe so
Wowww... Great info
Ok I Bought but yes I got all mixed up on the sewt up... But Its Soooo...good to see you with it ...Wow! Thanks for the insight...
Another excellent review. Thank you.
In terms of value, nothing else could beat this controler in its price range. Hands down.
Looks and sounds good. Lets see after 2 years.🎹✌👍

How do i actually load sounds into the SL Editor?! It's so basic but i just cant figure it out. Plays like a regular MiDI controller out the DAW but loading up these patches?! Cant figure out how to do jt
Nice one! Love this board! My only gripe is with the weird midi out when using external keyboards. Sumn funky goin on
Definitely want to see you Spice this baby up. I think it would be cool if you could do a wrap on the back of the board, so it had some cool "JM" theme on it. If this were mine I think I'd go for a military green look, paint it in a matte finish, and then take my beloved BeatStep Pro and also military green it out.
Do prefer this one of the Grand Version. I heard hey have different key beds which could make a difference with “players”

Definitely looking forward to the second version of the JM88
I had this board for about 3 or for years and it is definitely a great board. When I first bought it the software was new and software was buggy and didn’t work like it should so I gave up on it because I didn’t need it for my purposes. I only got rid of it because I wanted to board wit internal sounds as a backup when my computer would act up.
Very,Very,Very helpful.
Hello,
I'm very new to MIDi software and controlers.
2:20 StudioLogic actually has SL 88 Grand which is their top-of-the-line keybed (TP/40WOOD Graded Hammer Action with Ivory Touch)

Thank You sir for this video.
Damn, first the Keylab 88 Essential, then the SL88! You're reading my mind about the controllers I'm targeting lol
I'd love to see a long term review of both!
Fun fact: Studiologic is actually a FATAR owned company! So you're basically getting the keybed from the manufacturing source.
Ahhhhh now it makes sense!
Great Video and Info!
How would you plug an audio interface into this. Or is it better to keep usb to computer
hi I bought the sl88 studio keyboard today and I have a problem, when I want to play the last notes of the keyboard, from the F of the last octave, the keyboard does not send midi signals and therefore does not sound, any solution? Thank you
Have you tried the Studiologic Numa Compact 2X?
Great review but how do you get it to work with Logic Pro?
When setting up a new control surface It doesnt find it
I can't find any good Doc or video on how the SL editor gets its sounds. I have ableton live but not grasping how to get that referenced by the editor. Any recommendations? Btw...your vids are very good.
Where/How are you getting your sounds?
Hi John.....Got my SL73 yesterday....Like the feel of my piano samples and going from a 61 note to 73 keyboard is great. But a bit disappointed that the stick will only allow one note of pitch bend up or down with my external h/w synths. I've calibrated the sticks as per the manual but can't find any way of increasing the pitch bend range. Have written to their tech support-. Am I missing something? Plus, I think the menu system absolutely sucks with those buttons, totally confusing....Greets...Mike
Awesome review man! 1 question: can you zone-split the keyboard so to assign different midi channels into each zone?
Yup!!!
The custom board is definitely a great idea

John Mike, I'm loving your channel! Would this keyboard be overkill for an iPad setup? Primarily I see myself using the iPad as a sound module, like you've done with the Korg module pro. Thanks
Thanks! And Naa I wouldn’t think so...I would use it live with my iPad in a heartbeat
@@Johnmike Thanks for the reply! Cool. I'm not a piano player, but I do appreciate the feel of a good set of keys. And I do NOT use a DAW, use a Tascam Portastudio in my setup. TP/40WOOD: Professional Grand Piano Keyboard. Wood Keys. Graded Hammer Action. The special sandwich design of the keys (Kostil® Wood and Kostil®) applied to the graded hammer action mechanism creates the right clonation of the Grand Piano. 88 keys, Dynamic rubber contacts, Monophonic Aftertouch available, Escpament Mechanical Touch Feeling.

Through the development of a new kinematic force-scheme, the research and development of techno-polymer materials, determines a major strength of the key and more precision in its response. The musician therefore obtains a better dynamic control of the action applied on the key and on the hammer (Hyper Dynamic System®). The new PCB design improves the signal contact, increasing the dynamic range and the new connection system is supplied (Fast Connection System®).
A special lock-in system (Support Block System®) allows to use the frame of the keybed as a support for mechanical parts, making easier the development of the final instrument.

Yeah, I would like to know what your long term review of the SL88 Studio is as well. It's almost guaranteed to get an issue due to quality control being so bad. You will certainly experience really loud keys because it's a fault of the materials used.
Hi JM! Have you tried the Yamaha Cp73/88? And if so which key action do you prefer the CP or SL...thx
Haven’t tried that one yet...but hope to soon
I love it also, but!!! Adter about 10months.... suddenly, the LSD just died and got totaly blank, so I have to rely on the software to change its settings... I've read about it but thought, as I wouldn't be moving it a lot, it may not happen to me. Well, 10 months later, it happened. But, for the price, is a very good midi controller with the sense of a real piano. Please update this when it happens to you, is something StudioLogic has to address.
Is it possible to access full function and settings with computer when the lcd dies?
Just curious. Would it be possible to export custom presets and make them available for people to download? I'm hoping for something like that cause I don't feel talented enough to tweak anything myself.
Great video sir, thanks for the upload. Its either this or ye hammer 88 from m-audio. The big factor for me is integrating with ableton live suite. Which is easiest to incorporate into ableton live? Thanks again
Check this video I did: ruclips.net/video/feytNovt7QA/видео.html
Yer a lovely man
Can you arpeggiate through the midi out to a sound module (say an monosynth) with this keyboard?
Nice review... i really forward to buy a 73 SL in the near future. It's just so simple and well layout. I will try to use to it as a midi controller for my Nord Electro 6d. How about the keybed felling? Is it too heavy as i read in many other reviews? Thanks.
It’s a heavy feel...but I personally like that
