  • Lauren Pozen reports from Venice, where an investigation continues after a bus driver was stabbed Thursday afternoon. The incident is just the latest violent event to happen on Metro transit in recent months, sparking debate over whether an in-house safety department would make a difference.

Drivers used to be able to refuse service, they need to bring that back.

Nope that's racist and insensitive in progressively liberal California. Additionally ADA laws give strict penalties if a driver passes up a wheelchair or other disabled people, unless there is a previously documented incident with that specific person. Enjoy your blue, democratic state!

As a bus driver, I completely agree. However, homeless advocates, the NAACP, as well as disability advocates would cry foul and say it's a "pathway to discrimination." They're all liars. I say, we need a little more discrimination in this country, and less assuming that it's discrimination based on status. Because let's face it: there *are* people who need to be discriminated against. regardless of their racial, religious, financial, or disability status.

@@TVHouseHistorian I also am in favor of refusing service to certain riders, NOT all of them. I am speaking of those who pose a threat to safety for all people. And by the way, the NAACP don't do spit at all about anything. As soon as an incident occurs that's when they show their faces just to be noticed.

@@raymondgreene9600 so true. What I’m saying is that, when the problem passenger happens to be a person of color, or any other protected class for that matter, then any attempt at effectively dealing with the problem is automatically assumed to be racially biased. At that point, the transit district gets raked through the coals in the public square. It’s all based on public perception, which is heavily skewed.

I rode the Red Line for the first time during Pride. There are people riding around those trains who need serious mental help.

fully support a Metro police agency taking over safety/security on buses and trains, just wish they'd get it up and running faster

Metro needs to stick to transportation. Leave law enforcement to LAPD or Sherrif's.

They used to have one years ago, it failed, just install fare gates and keep the homeless off the trains, problem solved.

    Goal: More safety
    Predictions:
    BETTER VISIBILITY
    FASTER RESPONSE TIMES

    Reality:
    LESS VISIBILITY
    SLOWER RESPONSE TIME
    200% MORE EXPENSIVE
    Result: Disaster.

Decades ago Metro had its own police agency. Why was it defunct to begin with ? Had they stayed intact much of these incidents would not be happening.

If they reinstall a transit police agency, they should have officers actually ride inside buses and trains when possible. It would also help if they were undercover, as they could catch more crime in the action.
