  • Despite his young age of 23, Jackson Marvell is old-school. For him, climbing is about adventure. He’s not out clipping bolts or waiting for the temps to drop so he can send that next V-grade. You’re more likely to find Jackson out solo-aiding a crumbling mud tower. But when it comes to sending bold routes, he’s prolific. The Utah native summited 100 desert towers before he could legally drink and has established first ascents from the Colorado Plateau all the way to Kyrgyzstan. Despite his impressive ticklist, however, Marvell is a throwback to the days of old, when you climbed hard, came home, and went back to work without spraying.
    “If you weren’t filming him, the majority of people wouldn’t know all the stuff that he did this season,” says alpinist and photographer Drew Smith.
    Luckily, local filmmaker and photographer Ben Neilson was filming last season, and captured Jackson in his element, climbing some of Utah’s hardest ice and mixed routes. Check out the film Gimme Back My Bullets.

    Super inspiring video. I got into ice climbing this year and its been one of the best experiences in my life. It was easy to make excuses early on, but as soon as I gained successes, I got more addicted and less fearful.

    Jackson and crew showed up here in Kyrgyzstan last winter. They crossed the border to Tajikistan and crushed the ice down there. Amazing amazing climbing and I'm super lucky to have met them. Come back out guys!

    The footage is mixed on the go at the end. You can see it the way the ice goes from being two mediocre pillars high up to being a curtain high up. ???

    • @williamkholeif
      @williamkholeif 3 года назад

      Yep, I'm with you. My guess is they realized how flimsy the pillar was once he lead up the rock section and tried to transition to it, at that point they probably left a few peices of pro and bailed out with a rope left hanging. After giving the ice a week or so to form up, they returned. Then used the rope they left hanging to "top rope" the wicked rock section, then finished the ice climb. It doesn't take anything away from the crazyness of this climb- you'd never find me on anything like Jesus Wept or Gimme Back My Bullets- I don't have the skills or the life insurance policy for it. But still, there's some 'artistic liberties' being done with the video editing for sure.

      @@williamkholeif Nah, just the angle is off and compresses the view of the pillars. 5 points on the daggers each time.

    Really? Drilling your way up to get to the ice? I would rather leave it unclimbed than do that, but each to their own.
