Path of Exile 2 - My Impressions (I Played it)

- Опубликовано: 27 мар 2024
- Path of Exile 2 is a strong departure from the original game in ways that feel carefully calculated, and mostly comfortable. With greater emphasis on combo mechanics, dynamic action based gameplay, and overall convenience, it bridges a number of gaps that the original game has historically struggled with.
I greatly enjoy the combat, movement, and what I have seen of customization while acknowledging that the majority of what I experienced will be substantially different during endgame content.

WASD movement added will alone make me check this game out. By far my biggest gripe with ARPGs is mouse click movement. I made autohotkey scripts for D3 and PoE to give me WASD movement through quite janky means.
i absolutely despise wasd its something from the stone age that was used in my 5th grade school pc its completely trash no thanx imo no disrespect

It's time for lightning arc witch all over again
You mean lightning arc Sorceress? We have two ''mage'' classes now Witch and Sorceress, and Sorceress is elemental where's Witch is Chaos/Curse/Summon.
@@bazyl3357 From what I've read, much like POE, every class can use every skill as long as they have the stats. Whether or not that is true in POE2, I'd like to know how other classes other than the Druid could use Bear/Wolf form. I have an idea of creating a battle mage Warrior combining ground slam and Volcano similar to how it's used in the Druid Walkthrough video. Even so, I'd like more clarification of how each class can use other class skills.
@@Fighterfan69 Yes, absolutely, but if you want to use Arc, it makes sense to pick a class that has the best ascendancy for it right? And that will probably be the sorceress.
@@bazyl3357 Maybe there's something you could do with the curse archetype and witch. But yeah, OP pretty obviously just said 'witch' on reflex.
GGG should put Wells to spawn in areas. Thematically they don't even have to be wells, it could be a chalice, a puddle, enemy skull - any vessel for a magical liquid. And boss checkpoints shoud also refill you just as the Wells do, or wells themselves could act as checkpoints instead.
Diablo 2 also had wells in the open world regions. They only had 2 uses, but replenished over time
Other CCs said the boss checkpoints did act like wells.
I think that’s a great idea that dying at a checkpoint refills flasks
They just added flask charges on mob kills after the feedbacks
Great review, I felt it quite objective (while being clear on subjective aspects/personal preferences) and to-the-point, which I appreciate
Dodge roll, trash mobs can actually kill you, dying resets enemies, checkpoints. Sounds like Dark Souls and Co. have had an impact.

PoE2 is exactly what I expected from Action Role Playing Games... but it was never the case... until now! I'm so excited for this and I hope the gameplay keeps being that way in endgame too!
If this is what you want, you can also check out No Rest For the Wicked and Alaloth Champions of the Four Kingdoms.
@@ArawnOfAnnwn I was already eagerly awaiting no rest for the wicked but I wasn't aware of Alaloth, thanks!
Your observations on sound is great, I have 4.5k hours in PoE. I have played most of that time with the sound off, with the exception of endgame bosses. PoE2 is looking like a different beast.
I love that they know what work since D2 and they make sure not to change it, plus they expand on the cool stuff:
* The overlayed map
* The inventory
* The voices of bosses
* The life an mana
I'm a big fan of Children of Morta so I'm very excited for another game like it. Melee was also more difficult there but once you figure out active blocking and dodging it's very satisfying.
Lack of WASD movement was the single biggest issue that kept me from getting into PoE1. It's off to a good start.
POE1 was always meant to be a love letter to diablo 2, and even today in most of its systems you see that DNA. Really sounds like POE2 is its own separate thing. I'll probably play both 1 and 2.
Oh damn. Awesome to hear, that you got to play it.
I can't wait to try it. I've always felt like 1 was simply to much to get into as late as I found out about it.
What I don't understand is why it took this long for ARPGs to use separate move/aim. It's all benefit, no drawback.
The only thing I could ask for is to be able to lock on as a melee class.
Essentially... Elden Ring combat with a Diablo POV. POE2 is already like 90% there, it just would need lock-on.
I swear there have been others. Maybe it was that Korean one that did it? I know I've played it before, and it took some adjusting
I'm actually still not sold on WASD movement. It certainly is a nice addition, but my left hand is already managing 5-10 buttons for flasks, skills, and ui. Having my left hand also do the movement seems like overkill unless the frequency of flasks/skills also goes down. And even then, I don't want to be in a position where I'm using wsad to run from a boss while also trying to drink a flask using that hand.
@@StalkerOfTheZone a totally fair critique imo
@@TemperedMedia Victor Vran was an ARPG that did it years ago, some smaller games too
The drawback is keybinds
The number one complaint I've seen from keyboard players using wasd for movement was the keybinds.
You have skills 1-5 and then flasks 1-5. 10 more buttons that will all be used very often. Throw in a bind for dodge roll and block to make it even higher.
Great way to get carpal tunnel very quick.
Looks amazing. I wonder how endgame/seasons will be done so you can infinitely challenge yourself in getting better and killing more and more difficult mobs.
I'm also curious about more details on the skill trees to see if they still so uber complex and made in a way that if you make the "wrong" choice you just won't enjoy playing your character.
Hearing about WASD movement got an audible whoop from me! Holy shit, finally!
Love the review. Cant wait when i set up my pc again. To give this a go. Be set up around the time this fully releases lol.
This genre overall has never grabbed me. I tried Diablo and PoE in the past but never got passed the 10 hour mark. I might give this a shot.
I can straight up say that topdown or isometric camera is just too unimmersive for me.
try Grim Dawn or Last Epoch instead
@@benjifiji2019 based
@@635574 That is indeed part of it, but I'd say the major thing that makes me dislike this genre is the hyper-gradual progression. So even when I know I'm getting better gear, it doesn't feel like I am, because the improvements are incredibly marginal, and you only really start noticing them when you go back to an early game area and demolish everything in sight. So when he mentioned in the video that loot has been dialed down, that made me raise an eyebrow.
@@DjimonMoz
Maybe he means amount of loot. If there's less loot, but the loot you do find is significantly better (more often worth picking up), then that's a big improvement to me.
Less fiddling with loot filters. That's by the way a big plus for these games I found out, I'm only seeing the loot that are significant upgrades. This way I really feel every loot upgrade in my gameplay.
Setting up a comprehensive loot filter is tough though, so I'd recommend searching online for existing loot filters which match the class/build you're going for
I think if they remove the portal and just add lots of checkpoints throughout the level that should solve the problem of dying causing all the mobs to respawn and having to portal back to town during combat.
When you were talking about blocking, is it an active block. or it is a passive block like Diablo?
hold to block with shield
Both, Poe2 has passive block and active block. The active block has a gauge that depletes when hit.
These updates got me very excited!
Thanks for the vid. Looks fun
10:35 Based on how PoE1 works, I'm pretty sure you lose the loot drops in the ground because when you die they are just resetting the whole ZONE, which is why there are enemies again (and probably also a new randomized layout?). So yeah, is not that they remove the loot on purpose as an extra punishment for dying, more likely is just a side-effect of them just deleting the whole zone (loot included) and create a new one to make the "reset" happen.
They seem very confident in this game. Love to see it.
Can't wait to get my hands on it
Can't remember the source (think it was the channel "Avoid the puddle") but I saw a vid from the event where a guy talked about someone finding a health flask that had timed charge refills. Pretty sure everyone hated the 'back to the town well' mechanic so that will probably get tweaked.
Could use change the colour of gem slots or are the colours fixed in POE2?
My biggest problem with PoE1 is how mindless the game becomes at high levels. You just sprint from room to room spamming one screen nuke skill over and over. Oh, and it requires a PhD to understand how any of its systems work.
i mean exploding screens with chain explode is just amazing unique experience... until you do it for 100 maps and get bored, leaving you with the uber bosses that are hard(in a anoying way imo), until you get so strong that you kill them in 3 seconds.
But some still people play for months grinding i dont know how
The season I played a bunch of I got 2 mirrors quickly. Had no idea what they were worth for a couple days, found out sold them both and used my newfound wealth to build badass characters. If I didn't find those mirrors I wouldn't have made it. Because poe itemization is utter trash. Poe2 seems to fix that. I really dislike tencent owning 80% of ggg tho. Really a huge turnoff.
"requires a PhD to understand how any of its systems work"
I don't get it? That is what "not being mindless" IS. Timing your dodge to some pixel movement is mindless AF. All soulslike games are super mindless - if you have good reflex and hand-to-eye coordination you can not use your thinking part of brain at all and go trough them like butter.
@natel7382 PoE itemisation is trash? Why? It seems excellent - multiple levels of gear, multiple systems, small improvement, many layers of interaction, good crafting? You skipped the whole game with mirrors and that's when it was ok?
@@yavvivvayhe talks about the action. You can't say it's not fucking stupid, it's stupid and boring.
I still play Poe 1 but not for the action.
@@InpulsaBrokenHeart there is basically no action in PoE1.
But action in ARPG is boring - even when you have an excellent design and you are told to fight it 100+ times in a row I'd argue the more action it has the more boring and burning out it is. You can't turn off and not pay attention, you have to live through every moment.
Hence I like the simplicity of PoE moment-to-moment gameplay. And the feeling of blowing up hundreds of enemies without any difficulty..
Maybe they will hit it tho - Diablo 4 late game farming was super painful due to its slow pacing. Early/mid game was quite nice (in terms of action only of course).
I love path of exile and played it when it first came out but got way too overwhelmed, until I started playing it again and got the grasp of it. I regret not having kept played. I am hyped for poe 2 and I wont make the same mistake again.
i love the pace of the game, never played POE 1 because of that
they will likely either go with reset loot/mobs on portal or with checkpoints, will be interesting to see which one. because loot reset can potentially be a deal breaker imo
Maybe they want to reset Loot in order to stop you from farming / exploiting certain rare enemies in a map, dying and resetting them?
@@holysecret2 could be, but they have to balance the potential of farming like that vs the frustration of having to portal out while for any reason, leaving some good stuff behind to disappear. ggg is a good developer so i'm sure they will find a way
Take a drink every time he says "gear"and a shot every time he says "gears".
PoE 2 having a completely different approach to combat is literally the reason why I can't wait to play it. PoE 1 pushed me away with their 1 button centric gameplay and very very very slow learning curve when it comes to builds. I simply don't enjoy following a build guide and turning off my brain spamming a button to clear a screen of pinatas.
Why does the footage seem to be so low fps?
Imagine if they let you play this game like the Ikari Warriors 8-way joystick rotate style. They'd be a KILLER!
I wonder if you can have an Everlasting Flask after you beat PoE2 or if the idea can be implemented in the game. That should stop the tediousness of portaling to town on a constant basis.
Children of morta and wizard of legend. Amazing games with the same perspective + WSAD movement. Hands down my favorite way to play. I’m not sure if I had the same issues with melee. But if you’re not sure about the movement I’d recommend wizard of legend to see how it feels.
well, now that I see you covering this, I gotta ask...
any chance of you covering Last Epoch?
I think they wanted to go for a Diablo 2 feel with the flasks... but there was a reason why we had many slots in belts in D2. And (full) flasks were loot.... you still had to go to town to buy flasks before a challenging fight (or at start of the game when you had a low slot belt) but it wasn't like you were forced to go to town after every mob group. There were also shrines and wells...
Dont like the flask "mechanic" nor the mobs reset, which is quite bad, since this is not a game that you fly trough the mobs like in POE, will become frustrating.
Flasks only being recharged in town is an abysmally bad design choice. Why did they change it from POE1?
Having somewhat casually played POE-1 i get the impression that you have a much different game experience with it than i did! :)
I do not remember ever clearing an entire screen with a single spell! Though i definitely go far enough to be bored of trash-loot explosions.
Simplifying the crafting would be a god-send as i think that was the main thing that eventually drove me away from POE-1.
I remember looking up a crafting guide for building 'good' equipment and it was 2-hours long, and probably required 400-hours of farming to set up.
As someone that has over 5000 hours in PoE-1 i can tell you, after about a week in any league, most players insta-kill the whole screen with a single attack / spell... I end up more often than not killing everything in a 3-4 screen radius with one hit. Sometimes you don't even need to cast spells... The archetype known as autobombers in path of exile can kill everything in sight by simply moving. Basically, walking simmulators. And this is something an experienced player can accomplish in 1-2 days with no difficulty.
an that is exactlywhat i want not this multiple skill trash they forcing u do in poe2 no thanx @@andelledna
Good thing they're going to keep updating POE1 then. A lot of people WANT a more active type of gameplay and for most builds to have more than one damage skill.@taborevan
I use to agree with you about crafting but nowadays I think the issue is cost. Crafting costs too much and is largely inaccessible for most players except for basic crafts.
What changed my mind is thinking about crafting as its own mini-game where your job is to navigate the various crafting systems to increase the probability of getting what you want while minimizing cost. It's a bit like skills in path of exile, it's up to you to combine skills to maximize your effectiveness.
I dunno if you're aware of "craft of exile" but playing around with that started to feel like a game to me and it was kinda fun. I just wish an ok craft didn't cost 100 chaos.
@@TheRealMrTotebag well more power to you but not me an my friends we love walking simulators the best

This looks awesome!
Seems like they added a gold currency to the game. I wonder how that will be implemented.
I can't wait!
So looking forward to this. Not only because PoE, as good as it is, feels floaty and, like you said, automated... AND WASD MOVEMENT HOLY SHIT YES, that is the single thing that always frustrated me from playing PoE more than 3 acts
original path of exile gameplay was great and all but, at some point i realized, i didnt care about the "story", i didnt care about the endgame, the enemies, the classes, the only thing i liked is how freely one could build a character but stopped playing it, and forgot even what the hell i was, or how far i got, cant even remember what bosses i defeated
all i can say is i hope poe2 is more memorable TO ME than 1
The problem is you almost don't even need to watch your screen to kill things easy in Poe 1. So everything start to feel the same when you understand the game.
It sounds frustrating as hell. Think I will wait until at least season 3, hopefully they hammer out the bugs, balance and features by then.
Can you use a controller? For this game
As long as i can build around volcanic fissure in POE2 ill be happy.
I will refine my volcano god build until its perfect!
Pretty much every change you listed (except for flasks) sound like changes I wanted to see from PoE 1 (which I absolutely love but fell off it a while ago).
Perhaps with the implementation of the dodge mechanic, avoiding damage has become a crucial aspect of combat. Typically, ARPGs like these have players heal through damages with health items. Maybe GGG has taken a page out of other games, like Hades for example, in which healing is limited. It wouldn't surprise me if GGG made going back into town to recharge flask troublesome as a way to discourage players from doing so.
I am wondering if this will have controller support featuring twin-stick movement/aiming?
if i remember correctly if i couldnt beat a boss and i wanted to farm you could you could leave the game and come back and it reset the area. i figured this out after my wifi gave out on my first time playing it so the area reset feature is just easier with poe2 but i could be wrong i havent played in a year
Sounds like GGG games are better than AAA or AAAA games :D
If there is one thing I really enjoyed about Diablo 4, it was the story campaign. So I am glad GGG think about us story/lore nerds and uping their game in the sequel. Overall I am quite excited for this game. Will be downloading new season in PoE1 tomorrow after a long time.
PoE did actually have excellent world building
I'm actually completely surprised. I wasn't looking at this game since PoE1 (and most modern ARPGs) have bored me, becoming more into the "clicker-game" territory of mashing buttons and seeing numbers increase. ARPG as a genre was in DIRE need of evolution, and this might just deliver it. I'm impressed.
imagine fast paced poe1 boring and slow af poe2 being innovative.

Ah kk thx then i wont bother with it.
@@gavingreensmith1110 GGG has an ethical monetization model, if that's your concern. The only game-affecting things you can buy are stash tabs (which you need to spend a flat amount on, and it will last you basically forever, since they persist across leagues) and character slots, which, again, assuming you play exclusively leagues shouldn't be an issue. Everything else is pure cosmetics.
If you don't care about cosmetics, the model is quite literally "box-priced game with infinite free demo-version before you buy".
@therotten6152 not really, i prefer to buy games that have no microtransactions in them. If its free then its going to be full of them.
PoE is my favourite game and has maintained it's quality for 10 years now. PoE2 will be awsome
This honestly sounds like POE and Dark Souls had a baby and I am SO here for it. I loved POE's progression systems, but their gameplay was very empty to me. I just felt like a lawn mower and the act of actually playing the game didn't feel good. I really hope this game keeps that methodical, mechanical combat the whole way, because that will be the perfect ARPG for me.

Ha. Multiple websites and programs like path of building will still be needed for not making a wet noodle.
Do they give cheap and simple skill resets? Have they got a simple to use loot filter inbuilt? A simpler way to trade loot like an auction house? Those are my biggest blockades to enjoying the game, especially the first one.
nice, didn't expect you'd still be following the PoE scene.

Sounds sweet! I wasn’t a huge fan of PoE 1. I really disliked the skill gem system. PoE 2’s combat sounds like it more in line with something like V Rising , which I enjoy quite a bit. Sounds like its gonna be a lotta fun. Thanks for the coverage!
Wasd movement should be in every isometric game
Did they say anything about if they improved the crappy customer service?
My main impression is that PoE 2 will create a new player base, not convert the old PoE 1 players purely because of how different and how much harder the game will be.
I love poe, but poe 2 looks way more my style. Looks amazing
I didn't realize You're still doing videogames 😅
Honestly the more time goes by the more POE2 looks like an entirely different style of game. Its no longer a D2 style ARPG. it has so many elements of souls like combat, a much slower pace, a great emphasis on movement (not necessarily speed), and a lot of other small things. Its for these reasons i am so very happy they separated it from POE 1 because i guarantee you POE 2 will NOT satisfy that classic ARPG itch we all have. It will be its own unique and fun thing that we will enjoy...and when we want a standard classic ARPG, we still get to have PoE 1.
Basically this feels like we are getting our cake and are able to eat it too.
From what I have seen so far, it actually feels closer to Diablo 2 than PoE1 did. Of course, WASD movement is a departure. But slower pace, methodical combat, multiple skills to use synergistically, more limited resources and visiting town to replenish, all feels much more like Diablo 2 (in a good way).
@@holysecret2 in terms of challenge and pace i see that. but with the dodge roll, the telegraphed boss attacks, and the committal player attacks (especially with melee) i get dark souls/elden ring vibes from the combat. and thats not a bad thing. this could very well be one of the greatest fusions of genres to hit the market. I am extremely excited to try it and even moreso because it doesnt look to play like a standard ARPG
Yeah POE 2 looks amazing the more I see of it, but it does not look like the game for me. I'm not a fan of soulslike games at all but I love D2, Grim Dawn and POE etc. I like farming massive packs of mobs/big density and never really enjoy long boss fights with multiple phases ever. Even in POE i never do boss farming builds. I'm skilled enough to farm bosses I just don't enjoy it.
I share the same expectations of POE2 and criticism of POE1
Oh! WASD controls?! Now you have my attention.
Good video
UE doing a PoE video? A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one.
Even the long time PoE vets were saying that WASD movement was game changing and they loved it.
If you have a free spell to send you to town and back, and have to go to town to refill flasks, why not just have a spell that refills your flask and save people the issue of reloading 2+ areas for no reason?
Time gating.
3:55 so PoE2 wants to be isometric Elden Ring with diablo loot then?
Finally WASD MOVEMENT! I don't know why more games don't have this!
Doesn't D4 have this? :) Pretty sure it does
@@Shipdacheese thats a bad game tho so it does not count
So... its a little bit like "Dark Path of Exile Souls"? :D
I gotta say, I really hate the fact there is actual rolling instead of a fast backdash for example. I always hated seeing it in games when it doesn't fit, rolling butt naked on rubble is awful lol
Thank you for your candor in this video. I always appreciate your style of content.
When it comes to WASD compared to mouse movement in PoE2 I have some thoughts on the comfort of play in rangers compared to melee. For better or worse, PoE2 will be compared to PoE1. It might be down to tuning and refining movement and hitboxes and the like but another thing to factor in is that you're a veteran of PoE1. Coming into this, it will be impossible to fully take in this experience as completely new. I always find it important to keep this kind of "bias" (bias feels wrong to say here but I struggle to find another way of putting it, prior experience maybe?) in mind.
Cheers!
The dopamine dispenser take on arpgs, with trash mobs and loot fountains is so unengaging. You run around looking for kills, for loot and then sift through too much loot. D4 seems sadly headed towards more and more easy dopamine. This new take sounds a lot more interesting!
My biggest problem with PoE has always been trading, if they manage to implement an ingame trading system I might try it but otherwise I will skip it
the already announced a auction house style trading
I really like the mindless grind through maps satisfyingly shattering whole screens of enemies. PoE 1 made me think enough planning my own builds and strategizing how to progress endgame or craft my items. I can see the new vision of slower paced, more mechanically challenging combat appealing to some, but I can already tell I will probably still prefer PoE 1.
Keep in mind that's how poe1 was like in the beginning. It evolved into what you prefer over time. Much like poe2 might given some years. Who knows 🤷♂️
No potions charges is clearly going to be a breaking point for most players...
Touched on everything I think, except microtransactions. I'm curious now if the once $28 - $40 skins will be increased to $60+ USD. Or perhaps GGG will continue making supporter sets for both PoE/2...
I've spent more money in POE than my entire game library across all platforms combined. So while I'm not against mtx entirely, stash tabs and lootboxes are the worst.
All i care about is if theres Flicker Strike in game or not
Sounds like it's a entirely new game like they said and how you described it i think it might be a serious evolution to the genre
As someone who always liked the idea of ARPG's but always bounced off of them due to how Braindead they are (at least in the early game) I very much welcome the changes and the clear "souls" inspiration, Really looking forward to trying this one out.
I just hope i dont have to dop campaign every single season. I cba spending 10-15 hours every season drudging through the campaign, its what makes me only play one season every 3 years or so. Respect my time. Not drudging through 15 hours of crap every season to get to have fun. (yes I know people will say but you can beat the campaign in 3 hours, nope, I cant speedrun it that fast even with addons to make it easier.)
POE beta/season one is very different from what it is now. It had a number of things that would fuck you up in POE season one.
POE 2 season 3 will be cool.
POE seemed to have a better base than POE 2.
WASD controls is all I needed to hear. I refuse to play any ARPG without it.
