"BetterHelp" (once a prominent RUclips sponsor...) is making a comeback on the platform after 6 years, with a massive advertising push in the wake of newly forgotten scandals, and breaches of trust.
While some viewers may not remember the details about this company... that doesn't change their track record, and it certainly does not mean that their business ethics have improved. Today I wanted to re-evaluate this company since it will be appearing on a lot peoples feeds with increasing frequency over the coming months.

Wow, when Jezebel has the Moral High Ground over a company you know you are dealing with THE WORST!
My mom is part of a company for therapists that are suing them because they literally used my mom’s counselor profile without her consent. They are a scam
Was this on CareDash or the BetterHelp site?
Best luck on that lawsuit
I wish more videos and articles would report on this. It’s so highly concerning!
I hope they sue Better Help into bankruptcy, they screwed me at a very vulnerable position in my life as a teenager
Wow that’s shitty
WOW .. fraud, much!?
Don't forget the psychological manipulation of making the cancel button say "quit therapy." Seems innocuous to some sure, but that phrase has serious power behind it to anyone who has gone through therapy and deals with psychological issues. It's akin to saying "You need help, but you're actively deciding to not take it."
That's a really good point. A terrible company like this really needs to be exposed as NOT being real therapy. Because people who've never tried therapy before may never try again after this kind of experience.
The button should say, "Quit therapy, you quitter!!!"
Typical corporate manipulation.
yeah I thought that was the bad thing there, "quit therapy" feels like a "give up your life is hopeless" vibe. I thought the don't quit button was pretty straight forward
ye that's a low blow, but granted, therapy its a scam, so you can view it as "exit scam"
People taking paid sponsorships should not be allowed to falsely imply that they used a service they didn’t use.
How are you going to prove a RUclipsr never used a service, especially if it's supposed to stay private like with BetterHelp?
Even if investigators had magic powers, it would be so easy for these sponsored RUclipsrs to "use" these services for like 10 minutes just to be able to say they used that service... As long as the general population will stay dumb and uneducated these companies will continue to make billions.
every mf saying they personally played raid shadow legends and love it
Yeah, as an Australian when I watch a video from someone I know is living in Australia I hate it when I actually check out their sponsor and it turns out that the product they are peddling isn’t even available in Australia. So like how would they know how good the product is if there is no way they could have tried it? It does make it easier to spot a bad product this way at least but this is just one aspect of how bad sponsorships are becoming these days.

Ironic having an incogni sponsorship, considering the fact that they don’t exactly make it easy to cancel their subscription plan either, deliberately.
has there ever been an easy to cancel subscription?
Now another youtuber will make a video 'The "Incogni" RUclips Virus is BACK' and have BetterHelp as a sponsor.
Well Incogni isn't for mental health so there's that. They're not claiming to give you health care. It's not just about the subscription.

Raid and Raycon are actually pretty good

I’m really proud of Danny Gonzalez who, once people told him what better help actually was like, took the sponsor off the video. More people need to do that

Yeah it's real frustrating when it comes from the same source as well.. people that actually covered this lol.. like it's unexcusable either way, they're either too stupid to do a simple search before promoting something so.. clearly any of their content really can't have any value beyond aesthetic... Or they're actively not caring that they're they are directing the most vulnerable subsection of their audience into harm's way for cash.
The sad thing is, if you unsub and stop watching everyone who shills and lies, or did at some point, about raid casino legends, better help and some other scummy scams... You'd have to unsub from 90-95% of channels and blacklist most streamers.
Most of the rest, just aren't big enough to get the sponsorships. There is such a tiny fraction of content creators with integrity, it's insane.
The ones who have great reputation for being "nice" and good people blah blah. The same, also sooner or later started to shill scams. Even when they already make lots of money.
fuck im so glad i use crippling alcoholism as a coping mechanism over online mental health alternatives.
Based
I get it .. but it catches up with you.
Like any medication. It's only meant to be a crutch to help you cope until you heal enough that you don't need it. If you stay on any head meds, either prescription or self medication, for too long devastating side effects catch up to you. Doesn't matter if it's SSRI's, benzodiazipenes, alcohol, amphetamines or any of the other 1000s. They're all a band aid patch for your mental health that covers up the symptoms without addressing the actual root cause. Best to just go to therapy (not BetterHelp though) and start eating healthier drinking more water and exercising.

The whole "creators need sponsors for money" thing really isnt that clear cut. I need money to survive. Im dirt poor. But if i start selling dangerous drugs on the street that will cause harm to my customers then thats not okay. The viewers are customers and when you're sponsored your essentialy selling us that product or selling us on it using your influence so if that product is harmful then its not justified by "creator need money"
I feel no guilt about using SponsorBlock when channels take sponsorships from shady companies.
exactly this !!! id rather be broke and have basic morals than accept a check that requires me to tell people who might trust my opinion to use a product that has directly hurt so many fuckin people. ill take my food stamps any day if gettin money meant i had to let a company take advantage of vulnerable people
Its also not the creators job to make sure the product is safe and effective. Thats your job.
@@sectionsixty4020 Except... If you are getting paid to advertise something... It is, in fact, your responsibility to make sure you arent advertising legitimate garbage.
Like i'm sorry I'm going to say it but without an audience, no youtuber would have anything to their name at all. Without an audience, youtubers wouldn't even GET sponsorships. so the least they can do it make sure they aren't selling shit that could actively HARM the audience that pays their damn bills.
@@sectionsixty4020a creator still shouldnt sponsor an obviously bad and dangerous sponsorship. In fact, it IS their job to research the sponsorship atleast a LITTLE bit to see if theyre not advertising a… i dunno… scam???
The nice thing about RUclips ads is that it lets me know which products, services, and companies to AVOID!
Same. I never buy products or services that i saw in a ad.
I have seen one good ad, but that was for a very niche product and quite a while ago.
Lol no shit right? Seems like it's about a 90% ratio maybe higher.. kind of screws it up for the rest that actually have a product worthy, like you got a filter a little bit.. The $3 earbuds for a fortune, The garbage spyware browsers... The mobile gotcha games...
Like it helps if you frame it a little bit more honestly than these services are attempting at, to get that personal connection and personal recommendation from the RUclips and creator-based model of content delivery.. But, it is what it is and you kind of got to read between the lines a little bit, not too much though.
But it's pretty clear at this point, if it's in an advertisement... You're better off disregarding it, or actively avoiding it then you are to actually take a recommendation assuming that a creator actually believes in a product or even says they believe in a product...
There are things like HelloFresh and whatnot, those are legit, actually, reasonably up front services that do a thing.. and even some of the VPNs are reasonable for a VPN service, although... All of them should be treated extremely suspect when selecting because it's incredibly region-dependent and One should understand what they're doing with that, and what it offers and what it doesn't and what one has to do on their end before even bothering...
But you know what.. The bar is so low, and the creators themselves will talk about it outside of this particular sponsorship video etc.. you basically like okay yeah, all of this is trash until proven otherwise, because you're seeing the absolute trash of the trash, to the point of harmful, sold under the same emphasis More often then not, as anything that's quality.
same, only ad i clicked was Overdrive song promo xD
It's like searching for 1 fish(a good advertised product) in the sea of advertisements
BetterHelp-ing themselves to your wallet. And all the influencers promoting this garbage should be ashamed.
Influencers have no shame. The very word is an accusation yet they are proud of it.
Influncers only care about money you can always see when a sponsor ad season starts when you see like 10 different RUclipsrs read the script with no changes so you can hear the corporate speak
And they don’t care to say anything to their community just look at any sponsor video even from just a year ago there’s still videos with links to that Scottish land scam
True and real!
They should be deplatformed tbh
Agreed, there's no excuse when there's other crappy products for them to shill that don't take advantage of people in a mentally bad spot as widely known and as egregious as betterhelp
So BetterHelp is basically this year's version of Established Titles... only the "product" being hawked is therapy, rather than land ownership.
Established titles wasnt even that bad tbh. It was a novelty gift... this is a "mental health" application with may more sinister implications in their activity.
@@UpperEchelon Yeah, at least the worst thing established titles could do was waste your money, betterhelp can do so much worse
*Established titles is 2018's betterhelp.
well at least established titles changed branding for the scam from the last time the same exact scam was ran.
No, because while Established Titles was a con, it did little to harm those it was fleecing, and the take was relatively low.
BetterHelp "contracted" subpar therapists, forced them into bad work contracts, signed up people without properly advising them of their rights under HIPAA (if you're in the US), violating their rights under HIPAA (if you're in the US), and bilked them for sessions their patients did not attend. I work for a large healthcare system in the US Southwest. If my employer even attempted a sliver of what they did, the Feds would swoop in and shut us down. There would be no settlement. There would be no billing Medicare/Medicaid. And when state ran health plans and private insurance companies got wind of that, we wouldn't be able to bill them, either. Effectively a death blow. The only reason it's not a death blow for BetterHelp is that BetterHelp does not bill any federal, state, or private insurance as their business is 100 percent out of pocket.
I'm a simple man. I see a Betterhelp sponsorship, I unsubscribe.

Yes, I have done sponsorships before but only of products or services I genuinely use. If there’s one contacting me and I have never used, I first take my time to do an extensive research of the brand, reviews, etc before accepting, if I see a fishy one, I just decline it or not even answer their emails. Mr Ballen has them as a sponsor now, w his 8.87M subs. If ur not familiar w Mr Ballen, he's the best (imo) storyteller anywhere, and he does stories about "the strange, dark, and mysterious". He's also a Navy SEAL, and when he does his ad read for BH he talks about when he became a civilian again, the difficult transition, and also the PTSD he had from being in active combat. He gives the impression he has used BH for his therapy, which I'm 99% sure isn't the case. I think he's talking about his own struggles and how he needed therapy to work things out as a testimonial to therapy in general. I don't think he'd keep them as a sponsor if he knew all this.
I know that Kyle Hill promoted it 3 months ago. I was kinda iffy about his channel since.

There's no way he isn't aware of the negative issues surrounding betterhelp. And if he doesn't, that's negligence. For things as serious as mental health treatment, SOMEONE on his team should be doing their due diligence looking into sponsorships they accept. They're funneling their most vulnerable viewers to a terrible company, and since he has such a dedicated audience, he has gained a level of trust with them.

Better Help (through CareDash) deliberately mislead and essentially stole their clientele/patients from legitimate licensed therapists.
One of the niche gaming channels I watched took a BetterHelp ad, then turned off comments to hide from the backlash. Only to have to turn them back on because BH’s contract requires a link in the comments.

These ultra rich people are squeezing as hard as they possibly can to milk every cent they can from their audience, including accepting super shady sponsorships, when they're already wealthy enough to live lavish lifestyles of luxury, including doing their reviewing in a hecking home theater.

When I was leaving my previous therapy job, I applied to an interesting looking opportunity in a health system that I hadn't heard of. I researched the company and it looked like a legit smaller healthcare provider the next state over. It turns out the agency was a disguised recruitment agency and they were recruiting for BetterHelp. I noped out of that phone interview SO fast. So very deceptive even in their hiring practices. I opened my own virtual practice instead.
The "best" part about this scam is that it targets people with mental health issues. Meaning, people who are more likely to cave under the mental pressure and don't go through with the cancellation.
Lack of decisiveness is probably much more common with people with anxiety issues or who experienced burn out
Ayo is that the n*zi eagle in the gay flag 😭😭😭
And they have been the scourge of podcast sponsorships as well.
I wonder what happens to the podcasting industry when Me Undies, Manscaped, Brilliant, BetterHelp, and Blue Apron go under. Doesn't seem that anyone other than cash-burning startups sponsor podcasts en masse. I've never heard of it.
@@KippinCollars Yeah, double-edged sword. But once a creator realize that their sponsor is shady, they "should" make plans to get rid of them.
@@KippinCollars There's always the next idiot/delusional venture capitalist on deck thinking there stuff will be the one that actually becomes something.
I’m so glad my instant disgust with this fraudulent company was valid after I saw their ads pop up again.
Betterhelp executives need to be held criminally liable.
I've just watched a Wisecrack video ("Taylor Swift and the American Propaganda Machine") which was sponsored by BetterHelp and I was compelled to refer them to your video. I even concluded by saying:
"I sincerely hope that you take these accusations seriously and do your own research since taking money from those who prey on the vulnerable is wholly unacceptable."
I hope that they take notice and do not delete my comment.
I treat all adds from youtube as malicious in nature. Too many of them turn out to be scams, or harmful in nature, such as vshred, VPNs, multiple self help gurus, etc. The qaulity control is so poor, that it is just better to ignore ads in general.
a problem is that normies can't discern if a vpn ad lies to them. the ad read is supposed to cause anxiety for you and 100% of vpn ad briefs are not truthful about what data goes off unencrypted from your pc normally and what encrypted, how https works, how routing works etc.
What??? You don't want to buy a $40,000 Nissan SUV that you were shown for the 327th time???
I feel no guilt about using ad blockers when RUclips plays ads for scams. I feel no guilt about using SponsorBlock when channels take sponsorships from shady companies.
@lasskinn474 agreed. They often also sell a VPN as a must if you visit public wifi. As long as you visit a https site any malicious person can only see what sites you visit, not what you are looking at in those sites.
@@doufmech4323 yeah. not just often but 100% of the time its' portrayed as that it wouldn't be encrypted and that some rando could see your banking data or whatever. and they don't tell that from the vpn providers datacenter it just leaves as it would have from yours and you have no control on who is tapped into that line and to who that data is sold.
nor do they speak about who owns who in the vpn space and how much of that leads back to china - and as almost all tech channels are sponsored by one or another the tech channels themselves will not talk about the subject.
my particular pet peeve is that all of them promise countries they don't actually have exit points for. it's on the list sure but it's an ip that will geolocate to austria instead of saudi arabia and not be in a saudi arabia block..
Somehow BetterHelp returned
But they exploded twice 😔
Never left
"I understood that reference."
If I wanted therapy, I would talk to my *licensed* therapist instead of these online scammers that just want your money. Way to go, BetterHelp. You're a blatant mockery of the mental health profession and you only have yourselves to blame.
Stay safe, Echelon. This video hit close to home for me.
Thank you for covering this, it's so dystionpianly predatory

I remember betterhelp getting exposed like 4 years ago, I was so confused seeing youtubers advertise them again in the last year or so. Even youtubers I "respect" advertised them again after their first controversy.
In my eyes the first controversy years ago is unforgivable. No youtubers should have ever worked with them again after that
Glad to hear its not just me getting bombarded with these ads.
Thats why avoiding ads entirely, is essential.
I tried therapy with Better help and the lady they gave me told me that all my problems were in the "Good book" and because rapture was coming despite one of the only requests I made in their customisation was that I preferred someone non religious
I've begun unsubscribing from any RUclips channels that still shill this scam of a company. I don't care how long I've been watching them or how popular they are. No channels can claim ignorance of what kind of company they are anymore. If they continue to promote this, they don't respect their audiences. Period.
Dark patterns on its site, Google-level copouts in its TOS, leaking PHI, and aggressively pursuing subscription based profits. It's not the first company following that route, but it's definitely one of the ugliest.
12:27 Betterhelp candidly admits they care more about your privacy than your mental health. And no, they don't care about your privacy either.
So it's basically boils down to this every advertisement is a scam.
Follow that rule and you'll be fine.
Wild that in a video exposing a scam sponsor, he promotes another scam sponsor….
Next, figure out where at the butt bots are coming from.

After I lost my wife to cancer, I considered seeing therapy through this organization. I'm SO glad I decided not to.
I’m so sorry for your loss 😢
I’m sorry friend, sending good vibes. Don’t let this discourage you from still seeking help. ❤
🙏
Sorry to hear about your wife. Hopefully, you are getting some help and are part of a survivor's support group. And you did dodge a bullet with not using BetterHelp.
Thank you all for your support and well wishes. I lost my wife in October of 2022, so 2023 was a very difficult year. I'm doing a lot better now and have even started dating again--I'm seeing a widow who lost her husband not long after I lost my wife. Interestingly enough, we found each other even though neither of us were looking or had any intention of dating again. So, yeah, 2024 is a much better year, by far.
Some of my most FAVORITE youtubers seemingly take money from sponsorships segments for BetterHelp while not knowing about the company's history. I always leave on a message on these videos when I see it, telling them about the shady business practices, inability for customers to quit the service, and not once has any one of these creators ever responded, or stopped making BetterHealth ad segments. Its a shame, I don't know if its because I mainly watch smaller content creators who are literally desperate for the support in order to keep making videos so they are scared to respond and unable to quit taking money from BetterHelp, but I feel awful that BetterHelp is infiltrating a community that I love and scamming people with a service that is hard to cancel and selling their information. I always making sure to comment on any video I see with a BetterHelp ad to at least warn the viewers, and if I'm lucky, also the creator so they might look into the company and hopefully stop any association if possible.
BetterHelp: “Get real therapy, online.”
Satan: “Let me just say, I’m a huge fan.”
The one YTer who has them as a sponsor now, which really bothers me, is Mr Ballen w his 8.87M subs. Anyone who is familiar w Mr Ballen knows he's a Navy SEAL, and when he does his ad read for BH he talks about when he became a civilian again, the difficult transition, and also the PTSD he had from being in active combat. He gives the impression he has used BH for his therapy, which I'm 99% sure isn't the case. I think he's talking about his own struggles and how he needed therapy to work things out as a testimonial to therapy in general. I really wish someone could make him aware of this scam as he's one of my fav creators.
Navy Seal or not, running around with a name like "Mr. Ballen" should be indication enough of what that dude is all about. And the Veteran community has no lack of shitbags...just like any other collection of people.
Bro. He DOESN'T CARE or he would have never accepted the money. It's nothing but naked greed. And that's why I unsubbed his greedy ass as well. He knows EXACTLY what kind of company they are.
He IS aware. He just doesn’t care.
Yup, these replies are correct. Plus, ever known any sf guy that wasn't a psychopath? I haven't.

I almost signed up for their service before seeing the prices, left their service before i'd even finished signing up & grateful to have done so.
My sister was experience psychosis and reached out to better help, thinking she was reaching out for support... can just say it did not end well smh so gross that they're parading around as mental health specialists
Manipulating your customers to prevent them from cancelling while being a therapy service for vulnerable people is just evil.
I have been getting these adds for nearly 2 years now maybe little over a year and a half.
They're specifically targeting vulnerable persons. People who need therapy don't need this crap in their lives. Hopefully anyone preyed upon by BetterHelp can talk it through with a _real_ therapist.
"Have you thought about THERAPY?"
"Consider THERAPY"
"You NEED THERAPY"
If you make bad pancakes, you need Batter Help.
Ah, I do enjoy a good pun.
You should call out the RUclipsrs still advertising their services
I don’t usually comment and this will probably get buried but thank you for making the content you do - whatever you’re doing, keep doing it. One of the level headed and sane voices of reason I look forward to seeing pop up in my feed. Very refreshing.
Thank you Better raid, shadow help legends for sponsoring this video.
🤣
Thankyou! I keep having to keep this trashfire of a "therapy" service from everyone i know. Now I've got an easy way.
Better Help is now also running adds on Spotify, At least here in Sweden
The worst thing?
They get a "fine" in milions, but profit in bilions -.-"""
Yeah....this is "Meryka justice"....
they also have ads on Spotify now. First Spotify locks lyrics behind premium and now they're letting a scam run ads on their platform 😭😭
Better help never really went away. Drama just rolled over
I've heard bad things but this is just sickening. Taking advantage of needing people like this wouldn't, shouldn't and couldn't go unnoticed for too long. Just sickening!
Story time, back in 2015 [I think, been a heck of a long time] I had a pritty bad dark time, life was hard, and watching all my fave youtubers they made adds for better help. I signed up, was told "Yah its free to talk, dont worry" then I got pay walled, a friend of mine who signed up and payed for it had a heck of a time. Their counselor was as she said extremely unprofessional, always late, canceling calls, spelling errors all about [I know funny coming from me who cant spell right] and so on. She was able to get rid of her account but after it she was suddenly bombarded with emails about online counseling
It’s so hard for someone who is immensely struggling to reach out for help and when that help is bad it’s detrimental this is also why it’s terrible for influencers to be a “safe place” for fans
There are no safe spaces on the internet. Only illusions that make people drop thier guard.
The future that capitalism says there is no alternative to.
The better therapy sites, are directing talking to ONE professional, but talking to a community of people, like on a text based forum.
I found forum to be a better therapy solution rather then the former.
What absolutely kills me is seeing 'mental health' channels with sponsorships from Betterhelp. Like I've enjoyed a number of Cinema Therapy's videos, but to know that they're taking sponsorships from Betterhelp is.. :/
As a licensed therapist myself and a previous fan of CT, their explanation for dropping Better Help due to scandals and then accepting sponsorships again was abysmal. There is great harm to be done when you’re speaking about being an expert in the field and recommending a company that provably violates ethical practices.
Sometimes I feel like I'm on the wrong planet. It just amazes me the stuff people get into, believe, or otherwise engage with.
The fact that better help came up with an ad WHILE you bad mouth it
"back" bro, it never left. They just got different mackup tubers and other niches to sponsor
Betterhelp is the embodiment of the meme that says "Your therapist when your card declines: _ "
i used it a few years ago, they took $300 from me to assign me a children’s therapist (I was 20) who was not helpful in the slightest. not to mention cancelling is a huge drag, and i always thought it was strange that they didn’t accept insurance.
When will you do a deep dive into the Incogni scam?
Its clearly a typo. Its happening with every single company "We wont sell your data" should actually be "We will sell your data" Its just that every company hires the same person who keeps making the typo to write up their disclaimers.
I haven't finished watching the video yet, but I'm just waiting for the day I hear BetterHelp start to embrace M.A.I.D. like the Canadian healthcare system. To my knowledge, it hasn't happened yet, _but I'm still expecting to hear it._
Edit: fixed the name, the one I had was potentially arguably better, but wrong
