The "Temu" Invasion - Do Not Use It

- Опубликовано: 15 май 2024
- "Temu" (And Shein) are rising e-commerce platforms out of China, that are breaking into a western market with extreme force.
On the surface, these platforms are just easy alternatives with great price points, but in reality they are a sinister endeavor that circumvents import laws, and benefits from forced labor and human rights violations.
Setting aside privacy concerns (of which there are many)... a choice has to be made when using these platforms, and its a choice that people should be fully aware of.

Already knew, NEVER use Temu.
Boycott all chinese companies/products.
No! China has 3rd world status in the shipping and mail industry. They can ship for free while the rest of the world pays the bill.
Now talk about the American Prison industry. which is run for profit. PLEASE.
For like 5 years the only evidence of the Uyghur detention thing was one guy saying it in Germany who is like their Alex Jones. A lot of people in alt left media space dont think it happened. That city is not exactly hard to visit.
is easy to take the descision to buy on temu. you can just think of is the people in charge problem to solve so I may I as well take advantage of it while it last.
Anyone who will heed the advice "Don't use Temu" is probably someone who doesn't use Temu anyway.
It's still good to be informed as to why not to use it rather than leaving it to gut feeling. A video like this is an undeniable public good.
So you don't need to use a product/app/etc to say that is bad,
I recently heard that EA wants to add Ads in 70 dollars priced games, and I don't think that I need to buy future games with this "Feature", to understand that is a bad idea.
I think is not about whether a person use Temu or not, he didn't go on a rant to not use it, he explained why is might be potential bad. With stating of the exportation of US shipment system, as well as Slave labor, and other points.
Besides that he brought a point of the past in which, furniture businesses go bankrupt because they couldn't compete with the low imported furniture from china, with that the same can happen in the near future if people don't take any action.
And I think that was the point of the video.
sadly true
Exactly, with inflation out of control why would I overpay for the same chinese goods at Target or Amazon ?

The only problem is that Amazon does exactly the same thing. It's just someone buying products from the same factory and selling them.
amazon is plaged with chinese reselers
@@INWMI And a lot of them are scams. They don't actually have the products they claim to be selling
Just because amazon does it too doesn’t make it okay. Both Amazon and temu should be avoided
Amazon’s decline began when it decided to become a platform for third-party sellers - in particular, when it began courting Chinese sellers. Cheap junk sold under gibberish brand names now dominates the search results in many categories, and Amazon is making it increasingly difficult for the consumer to identify the real seller. The reviews are often fake, and Amazon will often delete legitimate negative reviews if the seller contests them.
I i tried to avoid those chinese resellers.
Thought amazon was safe but i bought alot of that cheap shit over the years.
In the future ill avoid them.
I used Temu to afforbaby set up my craft business. The items I purchased from Temu were exactly the same as the items I purchased from Amazon, and are identical to items sold by Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc. Same manufacturing stickers, same factory. Just saying. The problem isn't just Temu.
Yup. Something this video fails to discuss is... well I think it was kinda obvious in the furniture section. They were able to ship fucking timber all the way across the pacific, unload it, ship it to a factory, manufacture furniture, ship it back to port, sail it all the way back 6000 miles, and still destroy the US market.
That doesn't absolve Temu of all it's other issues, but it does show that the US has it's own issues. Issues pooling up all the worlds value into one location, both in terms of the country and in terms of the elites.
This is just what happens when you pay your workers like shit. We might be dirt poor in terms of our own country(I know I am) and can barely afford to live, but we're incredibly wealthy by comparison to most everywhere else. The grift is up.
That being said, Temus obfuscation of prices and sizes and reviews mean that actually a large majority of products on the platform are the same price as lets say Walmart for example. I've made purchases and I've done the math. People aren't saving nearly as much as they think they are usually.
The fact that other problematic stores sell their products doesn't make you any less of a part of the problem for buying them
yea even apple for YEARS has been known to use anti sewer-side nets for the essentialy slave chinese workers. altho legal not slaves because paid maby a penny a day.
The craft items are the same because they copied the items , copied the packaging , and in many cases even copied the ads and stole the pictures for those items from other places to use on the temu site .
I agree.
I remember their first ads being something like "letting U.S customers experience the Chinese market" and just realizing from the get-go that they were a multi layer of scams.
I don't understand how people fall for this over and over again .
Most people do... because they have an extra chromosome. It's the truth.
Because Walmart is the same thing.

China also takes advantage of its "developing country" status to get cheaper rates on freight shipping.
Who labels them as “developing country” though? They’re pretty much a well known powerhouse at this point.
Also I agree with your other point, there’s a reason they mostly ship with weird delivery companies, or if they must, use UPS/Fedex to avoid import taxes.
@@TheThirdWorldCitizen Missed the part where the OP put it in qutations?
yeah, they get subsisized by the industrialized world through foreign aid programmes cause they are "poor" yet they have launched and maintain their own space station and are talking about colonizing the moon, help me make sense of that "developing country" status thingy.
@@TheThirdWorldCitizen Global Postal Union controls the treaties, how a nation is categorised is probably based on GDP/capita. China is still relatively low there, about 1/6th of US GDP/capita. But yes, a nation with it's own literal space station probably shouldnt be getting shipping subsidies...
CCP is awful in every conceivable way, you cannot give them an inch, they will lie all the time and abuse good will at every opportunity. Their goal is to subvert the global rules based international order and replace the US as #1 world superpower. Avoid Chinese products.
@@TheThirdWorldCitizen Short answer is that the GPD per person is still shit. China loves to present itself as a few cities (which are funnily enough the capitalist zones), but the vast majority of China is still dirt poor.
Their "powerhouse" is well overstated if you realise they're roughly 1/5th of the world population. They're still basically cheap manufacturing due to low wages and not much more, a title they're slowly losing to other low wage countries.
Developing status is based on GDP compared to world average if I recall correctly.
Holy shit the fact that this video had a temu ad before the video starts only serves to drive the vid home
This brings up a very important question.
If one is a bad person for using Temu, one must be a bad person for using an iPhone.
The vast majority of us use smart devices; it’s become almost impossible to get by without them. Many Apple products use cobalt in their batteries.
Cobalt is mined in horrific conditions in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
We are, therefore, benefiting from slave labor. Now, what?
It's amazing that people don't know how horrible the world is. I remember this being a big topic like 15 years ago, as I recall the solution was to not buy a new phone every year and I think several countries even sued Apple for sabotaging it's previous products.
@@GangsterFrankensteinComputer Can't agree more, I even wrote a comment mentioning how clothing brands have been exploiting Bangladeshi workers for decades now and that Shein isn't the only one.

Okay two problems:
- Amazon resells the exact same items but more expensive... So what's the point?
- Slavery is not efficient since most of the routine work is automated or outsourced to cheap countries (Vietnam)

The US pays for shipping through trade agreements. China officially is a "developing country" and they leverage that so the US taxpayers end up paying the shipping costs.
Why is that though?
@@IOverlord Idea is to give a leg up to developing nations with lower shipping costs. It's actually fine in principle, but not when you count China in that basket and they ruthlessly abuse it. Relevant organisation is the Global Postal Union, set up to manage these treaties. Trump tried to go after them to improve the situation re China, and as a result US is now actually the most expensive country to post into, at least from the UK, due to higher franking costs - like a stealth tax that mostly affects small value parcels. What I dont understand is how the de minimis is used by Temu, since it's supposed to be $800 total value per day sent in per company IIRC, but maybe I am remembering wrong.
Came here to say exactly this. Our taxes are paying for millions of dollars for shipping Temu products to the US.
@@DaveEtchells yup, i ignore all my friends using it because if i get angry about ONE more insult to the USA ill have coronary.

You know, all things considered, it always feels ironic when Google delists an app for being spyware...
"when Google delists competition" lol
Google did it cuz its mad the middleman gets cut out.
How is Amazon any better when they do the same drop shipping?
If you want to talk about slavery, how about all of our devices use cobalt that was mined using child slave labor deep in the Congo? This was happening with US companies, they offshored all our manufacturing so they could make dirt poor people in China work basically slave labor. The only difference is now some Chinese companies are taking over the middle-man position once occupied by US firms.
Child labor is horrible, but ethnicity-based concentration camps where people are being chemically neutered just because they are of Turkic origin is waaaay worse
Situations like this always remind me that, no matter what legislation or law is put in place to stop corruption from happening, they'll always find a loophole or way to circumvent it altogether
So what? Even if TEMU and Shein would disappear this instant minute, three new companies like them will pop-up.
Or just blatantly break it and maybe pay a meagre fine, like Meta and Google
The legislation is created with that in mind, duh
either from incompetence or by design, that is what always happens. Might as well abolish all laws, the majority of people have proven they do not give a crap about major crimes against humanity that should disgust even the weakest people in terms of morallity, why would governments create laws that people do not want?

Some products are the exact same products from china on amazon but you pay 5x the price. Well if it makes people feel better knowing they gave 80% of the price they paid to amazon as well as encouraging slave labor good for them
Agreed
Amazon is even worse honestly.
What should I do if I live in a country where items like those of Temu and Shein are resold by local resellers claiming to be local of good quality, not giving you the choice to buy from a reputable source?
One important point is missing in this video: the stuff you buy on these platforms is absolute garbage in quality and safety.
Horrifically toxic plastics that shed chemicals like lead paint chips. The government turns a blind eye, even the glowies are corrupt.
It reminds me of the old peanut trade story.
When you had several peanut manufacturers, each one fought to pay workers more and make the peanuts cost less, eventually one company made it so impossible to be beaten, all the others went out of business. They then cut the wages down to minimal and put the price way up as there was no competition.
This is going the same way.
exactly what amazon have done.
@@r8gg Oh no sir, Amazon has done much worse. I worked for USPS and during the training session we had in Kansas City Missouri with the Post Master General, we were subject to a conversation with the trade union casually talking about how Amazon has a contract with USPS which allows them to ship as much as they want for a yearly price.
And that the USPS consistently loses money from the contract. Now the USPS isn't suppose to be subsidized by the US government, but they have been before and my guess is they will again if they lose enough money.
How do you think that Amazon offers free 2 day shipping(basically USPS priority mail) on 6 dollar products when priority mail cost nearly that much. Coming from Amazon fulfillment centers, where Amazon is taking a cut essentially, warehouse workers are paid, ect. and the person selling the product makes a profit.
It's just because the shipping is tremendously cheaper than what everyone else pays, so much so USPS does it at a loss.
China was literally setup for this when every manufacturer moved production there. They have the molds and designs for everything everyone makes and can replicate it and resell it for a fraction of a cost on their own platforms. No one sees the back-end of this like you've explained as the average consumer just sees the price being so low and buys it from wherever. Humanity is at a point, especially with the way inflation and shrinkflation have impacted people's lives, where it doesn't matter where things come from or how they're made, it just matters how much it costs.
I've never trusted the western media narrative of concentration camps in China. We're talking about the same media that has never reported on Israel running an open air prison of Muslims with guard towers since 1967. And we also know the corporate media have to bend over backwards to lick Chinas ass so until I see citizen journalism on this I have to guess the motive to media reporting on concentration camps is to discredit China in preparation for the War the US have planned using Taiwan.
I mean South American countries can do it too. It's just south of the US border and labour is cheaper than China. They can be a manufacturing powerhouse and shipping to the US is faster and cheaper. Gangs already force entire towns to grow and make cocaine under the threat of death like the Uygurs. So why don't they change it to manufacturing? Since forced labour is that important as in this video, how about stopping drug trafficking and consumption in America first? You can free entire towns in Colombia.
Ignoring that "shrinkflation" is just inflation but just not on the price tag. Cost has always been a thing, it's not even the whole "chinese will steal shit", it's just labour cost is so low it's the only real way to get the costs of production so low people are willing to pay for it. The harsh reality is that the average consumer has become accustomed to dirt and dirt cheap since the 60's and don't want to step away from it. Even mid and a large number of high end items are dirt as compared to the cost it would be to produce locally and ethically.
As a design and publishing business myself (of kids toys) I would LOVE and praise heaven if I could make my products locally but I'd need to multiply my prices at minimum 10 fold to even have a chance at making a profit, more than 20 times if I want to avoid running the edge. And realistically speaking, who would be buying a set of 36 colored wooden blocks for 170 euro rather than 10 euro?
Wages are simply to high as the cost of wages are just put in the cost of the product same with taxes and other costs, and that most manufacturing has moved to China and other such places closing local plants that worked at scale (increasing cost again).
I think a wake up call to people should be that generally speaking buying new is cheaper than repairing a broken item. In a healthy manufacturing ecosystem repair should be significantly cheaper than buying new.
@@relo999 for most objects, but not all. In my industry, a skilled craftsman is paid somewhere between $17-$25/hr. Shop rates are USUALLY about 100-150/hr for most yards. Yep haha. Video hadn't even started yet.
There was an old economics book from early 20th century that had an example of how the economy of poverty works. To make a long story short, the man of the story had 2 options on buying boots: pay 10 bucks for a cheap pair that lasted 6-7 months of work and had to be replaced, or pay 50 for a premium pair that would last 10 years, on a salary of 35 dollars. He kept choosing the cheap boots because he could more easily afford them and in 10 years time he had spent 200 dollars on boots and half the time he was walking almost barefoot because the boots were falling apart.
This is what the flooding of the market with cheap products does, you see it as affordable now, but in the long run you end up paying 10 times more for the same thing because you need to replace it often. Its IRL microtransactions.
That's not from an old economics book, friend.
That's called the Vimes boots theory, named after Commander Vimes of Discworld. Its still valid, though.
My parents taught me that lesson. You get what you pay for.

This concept is about lack of wisdom or foresight on the consumer's part, but it doesn't adequately explain in full Temu. It's true with things like works shoes or cars and such. Things that you will need for the rest of your life. But with fast fashion and useless junk like what's popular on Shein and Temu, being new is a desirable trait for the consumer. Clothes fashionable for a month, a gadget you use once to see how it works, a second time because you feel bad for spending money on it and then never again, and so on.

Except in this case, they are immediately skipping to the phase of having extremely low quality items that are nearly always a loss to buy them for how terrible they are. The few things my sister bought from there were pretty much all either defective or broken.

If you look into it, you'll realize not only are the workers underpaid but sometimes foreign brands straight up not pay at all and run off with the goods. And not to mention child labor is rampant.
Child labour is nowhere near as bad as people make out. Not necessarily anyway. It's also a lifeline for families I'm those regions. Literal slave labour, as discussed in this video, is a different beast.
They are also destroying the environment over there. A lot of rivers in Bangladesh are ultra polluted from garment factory runoff.

We're pretty much at a point where Chinese manufactured products control so much of the market it's virtually impossible to find stuff that isn't made there. If you were to try to avoid anything made there, you would have no phone, no tv, no computer, nothing with any plastic in it, and nothing with any electronics. Even if you were to find versions of these products not made in china, you would be paying a lot more, and you probably wouldn't even be able to get them for certain product categories.
There is always the used market. I got an old TV for free many years ago it is over 20 years old I mostly just watch DVDs but it works great still and honestly a TV or cell phone is unnecessary anyway. You can find computers and TVs for cheap used or even find them on the side of the road, so no need to buy new inferior products. But I do agree it is hard to find things not made in china, but it is not impossible.

Yeah sadly our governments are run by pussies
we are the US, are you an animal that needs the government to take care of you?
You wrote "significantly underpriced" wrong, you're just used to dirt cheap prices whole your life.
The customers are their own worst enemies. They keep going for cheaper and cheaper until their own jobs are sourced out.
You can blame customers who want cheap products. To say anything else is insane.
If you buy things that are dirt cheap that would normally not be cheap, you're making a very obvious statement that you don't care for the market or circulating economy responsibly.
You can twist my words all you like but it's not like the people who use Temu don't know exactly what kind of people they are behaving as.
From my experience Temu is better than Aliexpress. I don't live in US so here the alternative is either you pay literally 10 times more, or you buy from Temu. It's not good for everything i.e. computer parts are bad and not cheaper, but for other stuff they are good. For some things which they sell, there is really no alternative, i.e. you either pay 10 or even 20 more expensive or can't buy the thing at all. I live in a small European country and Amazon is expensive and the shipping is even more expensive than the thing you try to buy, so Amazon is a no go... and our local e-market sell the same stuff and even lower quality Chinese stuff with 5 to 20 (times not percent) mark up....
what country is that
true, Aliexpress is much better for parts if you buy from reputable stores. temu is for just minuscule cute things or stuff you might not find in your area.
I agree, i bought a phone case on my country's website, i later found that same phone case (same product code) for €1,38 on Temu. I had paid €15 for it. Since that incident i stopped listening to RUclipsrs, because they are promoting you into letting yourself get scammed out of money

You think that Amazon and other companies do not have stuff coming to the USA from China only Temu?
Not only that, but also South Korea has tested their products and they are high in lead and asbestos. Over the permitted threshold.
You get what you pay for on temu which is absolutely low quality products.
And probably sometimes dangerous.

I neither shop at Temu nor at Shein, but I do have a defense in comparison to Amazon: Amazon doesn't ship all their products to eg. Holland, where I live. 90% of the products I (used to) find there and want(ed) to buy show _"This item doesn't ship to the Netherlands"_ . Plus on Amazon the price vs quality is more irregular and trust-unworthy than on these Chinese shops. On Amazon you get scammed more and Amazon isn't doing much about it. That's IMHO the main reason why Amazon is losing from these shops

Shop at your local thrift stores if you can.
Yeh, they may sell not Chinese stuff, made by labor camp inmates for a bowl of rise, but domestic products made by prison inmates for like 30 cents per hour.
A huge upgrade for your moral grandstanding.
@@AdverDoiren idk what country you're from but our thrift stores sell old clothes donated by previous owners, not new prison-made stuff
Local thrift stores stell allot of things at ridiculus prices too. Even if that money is supposedly going to a 'good' cause? The belivablity of the money actually ending up going to what is claimed is as likely to get their as how far I can throw the money... And since we are getting closer to a moneyless society for every day that go by? How far can you throw that 'Made In China' Iphone or Google device? And the money is supposed to move contries? Yea sure the money is going to a 'good' cause.
Altho. Something at a thrift store that cost X? And that X = the price of a China imported 'new' prodcut? More often then not is the overpriced old thift store item in better quality and going to outlast the poor quality wear that is supposedly new. It still is not a glowing recommendation to buy at Local thrift stores. Since now your very much running into things having a price increase because they can get away with it. Since they are soooo gooood for the enviroment! You better pay a premium for this! Going directly agenst the hole point and purpuse of the hole bloddy thing! It sould not be a buissnes venture earning fat margins with super greed!
So often you can find something truly used and simply worn and close to a dumpster on those shelves. Yet because it is 'old' and whatever messed up ideas (greed) is used putting a price on it? You are only going to have it go into a dumptser. Or maybe it sits on the shelve trying to trick someone with more money then sense into buying it. This was not how thrift stores where before! Now if you avoid going to any thrift store doing this kind of BS? Then your not going to any of them. Since they all do it now. It was so easy knowing if a thrift store was going to close down and fail by only waking into the place ONES. Since they would not have anyone returning if the prices where unreasonable. Now? It seems to not matter that they are being unreasonable without a single item worth the price on the shelves.

everyone knows it and chooses to ignore it
to the point where it became a cliché
people lecturing others on slave labor, using products from slave labor
we all are beneficiaries of despicable slave labor, so let's all stop acting like we're not and pointing the fingers at others for it.
we are ALL guilty of it, every single comment that was posted here, was posted on a device built in part by slaves, every single one.
finger pointing is not the solution (actually I'm not sure there is a solution available right now without major, dramatic and most likely very painful and unpopular -which means the politicians willing to enact such changes are very unlikely to be elected into office- political, structural, cultural and economical changes)
one thing we can do, however, is make sure we use all of these devices to the best of our abilities and actually create meaningful actions through the use of these devices, that will eventually result in a cultural shift (most likely over decades) that would weed out these practices.
ai might offer some solutions too
but at this point, nobody can know what to do about all this because we are all complicit, all of us.
if we are to stop using anything made with some amount of slave labor, we'd be set back decades, technologically and nobody would be able to afford anything anymore

I never used Temu, this is in fact the first time I heard of it. But your argument is not a compelling one. Most of the world's manufacturing has already been exported and is done at third-world wages that can be considered modern-day slavery. It also looks like the exact same products on Temu are available on many other sites like Alibaba, Ebay, even Amazon. The best way to stop people from using outlets like Temu is not to grandstand on slavery, but to improve the economy and get inflation under control, so there is no need for people to have to rely on it.
this is how you make a fair and balanced argument boys. thank you.
Yeah I’m with you on this. His video was very biased against Temu, when every major company on the planet probably does the same things.
Apple relied on child slavery for a long time until they were caught, didn't they?
I completely agree, at this point you can either pay for Temu and buy direct to slaver or pay for a larger brand to abstract that layer of slavery.
If you refuse to buy from Temu, but have no issue using Nestlé and all its child companies, or Apple, Nike, Adidas, Samsung etc. you’re not serious about anything, you’re just paying for a layer of abstraction from a large western company to justify your actions as if paying more for slavery means anything.
I personally don’t buy from Temu, but I’m lucky enough where I can typically buy from western brands for my phone, clothes etc. but I’m under no illusion that this means the items I buy are “ethical”, there is no ethical consumption under capitalism.
Respectfully, I completely disagree. There is a huge leap you have to make to be switching from amazon where all marketing information is traceable and has a proper paper trail linked to it rather than using an application that blatantly hides its sourcing information from you and is veiled in intentional deception.
Normally you would have a point, if Temu wasn't your target for defense. It is exactly the same leap you have to make to switch from RUclips to TikTok. I just can't make that decision in good conscience. If you use TikTok, you deserve every negative thing that happens to you, because they aren't hiding what they are doing to you. Same with Temu.
In a sense, in any marketplace, the price for the products tells you the story of how it arrived there. I didn't need to see these informative videos to understand there's something extremely shady going on.
It's extremely odd for you to be running such hard defense for a company that does not care at all about the consumer or the seller.
An overwhelming majority of the tech we use have cobalt as part of the components that make up the device.
One of the ways cobalt is obtained is through mines in Africa that practices what could charitably be called indentured servitude.
Does this mean we should also eschew anything with a circuit board as well, knowing that the very thing I am using to type this on probably had slave labour involved at some point in it's manufacture?
It just doesn't seem feasible to me.
There's a reason almost everything is manufactured in China. And we're all complicit in propagating it since each and every one of us want to "save money".
Who do you think owns all those African mines that use indentured servants? Chinese companies. Somehow I don't think throwing even more fistfuls of cash at those companies (through Temu/Shein/Aliexpress) is going to solve anything, but it will absolutely make things much worse, now and in the long term.
How do you think those miners would feel if you told them about the mountains of electronic waste the U.S. creates? Phone upgrades, planned obsolescence, removing support for older systems, and the lack of modernized industry standardization making for less repairable products all spit in the faces of these miners. We need stronger regulations and deeper consequences for being involved in these human rights violations. Until that happens, the best thing you can do is see through the consumerist marketing propaganda and repair what you can, buy used if it's an option, or spend a premium on a quality ethically-sourced item that will last longer and give you a better experience. Only as a last resort should you buy some cheap garbage made at the expense of others, otherwise you are directly endorsing genocide, slavery, forced labor, and environmental destruction.
you sound exactly like a Chinese sent into Africa by the CCP to exploit their natural resources

Not that I use temu but almost all other companies have a record of 1 or more of these misdeeds be it now or in the past and we've all used them un/knowingly 🤔?
Exactly, this has always been the case. Idk about Shein, but many popular clothing brands has been exploiting the Bangladesh garment industry since forever ago. I understand the ideals behind preventing slave labor from producing goods, but the United States from a government perspective is also in favor of slave labor. The only way I see many of the underpaid and overworked class of America that is not considered slave labor to own much of anything outside of the necessities for food would be at a remarkably cheaper price which is able to be found somewhere like temu. This product availability enables those without the title CEO to enjoy some aspects of life while they are not at work. As somebody who has survived on primarily expired food for the last year due to monetary circumstances, I don't see many options for people that are being taken advantage of by every company from America.
