- "Temu" (And Shein) are rising e-commerce platforms out of China, that are breaking into a western market with extreme force.
On the surface, these platforms are just easy alternatives with great price points, but in reality they are a sinister endeavor that circumvents import laws, and benefits from forced labor and human rights violations.
Setting aside privacy concerns (of which there are many)... a choice has to be made when using these platforms, and its a choice that people should be fully aware of.

I recently heard that EA wants to add Ads in 70 dollars priced games, and I don't think that I need to buy future games with this "Feature", to understand that is a bad idea.
I think is not about whether a person use Temu or not, he didn't go on a rant to not use it, he explained why is might be potential bad. With stating of the exportation of US shipment system, as well as Slave labor, and other points.
Besides that he brought a point of the past in which, furniture businesses go bankrupt because they couldn't compete with the low imported furniture from china, with that the same can happen in the near future if people don't take any action.

Amazon’s decline began when it decided to become a platform for third-party sellers - in particular, when it began courting Chinese sellers. Cheap junk sold under gibberish brand names now dominates the search results in many categories, and Amazon is making it increasingly difficult for the consumer to identify the real seller. The reviews are often fake, and Amazon will often delete legitimate negative reviews if the seller contests them.
I i tried to avoid those chinese resellers.
Thought amazon was safe but i bought alot of that cheap shit over the years.

I used Temu to afforbaby set up my craft business. The items I purchased from Temu were exactly the same as the items I purchased from Amazon, and are identical to items sold by Hobby Lobby, Michael's, etc. Same manufacturing stickers, same factory. Just saying. The problem isn't just Temu.
Yup. Something this video fails to discuss is... well I think it was kinda obvious in the furniture section. They were able to ship fucking timber all the way across the pacific, unload it, ship it to a factory, manufacture furniture, ship it back to port, sail it all the way back 6000 miles, and still destroy the US market.
That doesn't absolve Temu of all it's other issues, but it does show that the US has it's own issues. Issues pooling up all the worlds value into one location, both in terms of the country and in terms of the elites.
This is just what happens when you pay your workers like shit. We might be dirt poor in terms of our own country(I know I am) and can barely afford to live, but we're incredibly wealthy by comparison to most everywhere else. The grift is up.
That being said, Temus obfuscation of prices and sizes and reviews mean that actually a large majority of products on the platform are the same price as lets say Walmart for example. I've made purchases and I've done the math. People aren't saving nearly as much as they think they are usually.
The fact that other problematic stores sell their products doesn't make you any less of a part of the problem for buying them

The craft items are the same because they copied the items , copied the packaging , and in many cases even copied the ads and stole the pictures for those items from other places to use on the temu site .

Their "powerhouse" is well overstated if you realise they're roughly 1/5th of the world population. They're still basically cheap manufacturing due to low wages and not much more, a title they're slowly losing to other low wage countries.
Developing status is based on GDP compared to world average if I recall correctly.

It's amazing that people don't know how horrible the world is. I remember this being a big topic like 15 years ago, as I recall the solution was to not buy a new phone every year and I think several countries even sued Apple for sabotaging it's previous products.

precision is the key. many of these grey markets that sell export quality chinese products have a mix of outright bad guys, janky bootlegs that aren't toxic or made with slavery, and surplus of legitimate stuff. Heavy handed approaches are easy to deflect as anti-national bias.
And those that are made in America are almost exclusively United States prison labor where they make $1-5 a day for your $3000 couch

@@dollzo I ordered outdoor trousers back in 2017 from Wish, I expected them to be worthless. I still use them almost daily and have been using them in my physical labor from the day I got them. I've never had trousers that endured so much. Usually even premium brand trousers wear down within few years for me. 5/5 quality, I prolly won't find anything like these ever again 💔
The US pays for shipping through trade agreements. China officially is a "developing country" and they leverage that so the US taxpayers end up paying the shipping costs.

@@IOverlord Idea is to give a leg up to developing nations with lower shipping costs. It's actually fine in principle, but not when you count China in that basket and they ruthlessly abuse it. Relevant organisation is the Global Postal Union, set up to manage these treaties. Trump tried to go after them to improve the situation re China, and as a result US is now actually the most expensive country to post into, at least from the UK, due to higher franking costs - like a stealth tax that mostly affects small value parcels. What I dont understand is how the de minimis is used by Temu, since it's supposed to be $800 total value per day sent in per company IIRC, but maybe I am remembering wrong.

This was happening with US companies, they offshored all our manufacturing so they could make dirt poor people in China work basically slave labor. What should I do if I live in a country where items like those of Temu and Shein are resold by local resellers claiming to be local of good quality, not giving you the choice to buy from a reputable source?
One important point is missing in this video: the stuff you buy on these platforms is absolute garbage in quality and safety.

It reminds me of the old peanut trade story.
When you had several peanut manufacturers,each one fought to pay workers more and make the peanuts cost less, eventually one company made it so impossible to be beaten, all the others went out of business. They then cut the wages down to minimal and put the price way up as there was no competition.

And that the USPS consistently loses money from the contract. Now the USPS isn't suppose to be subsidized by the US government, but they have been before and my guess is they will again if they lose enough money.
How do you think that Amazon offers free 2 day shipping(basically USPS priority mail) on 6 dollar products when priority mail cost nearly that much. Coming from Amazon fulfillment centers, where Amazon is taking a cut essentially, warehouse workers are paid, ect. and the person selling the product makes a profit.
It's just because the shipping is tremendously cheaper than what everyone else pays, so much so USPS does it at a loss.
China was literally setup for this when every manufacturer moved production there. They have the molds and designs for everything everyone makes and can replicate it and resell it for a fraction of a cost on their own platforms. No one sees the back-end of this like you've explained as the average consumer just sees the price being so low and buys it from wherever. Humanity is at a point, especially with the way inflation and shrinkflation have impacted people's lives, where it doesn't matter where things come from or how they're made, it just matters how much it costs.
I've never trusted the western media narrative of concentration camps in China. We're talking about the same media that has never reported on Israel running an open air prison of Muslims with guard towers since 1967. And we also know the corporate media have to bend over backwards to lick Chinas ass so until I see citizen journalism on this I have to guess the motive to media reporting on concentration camps is to discredit China in preparation for the War the US have planned using Taiwan.
I mean South American countries can do it too. It's just south of the US border and labour is cheaper than China. They can be a manufacturing powerhouse and shipping to the US is faster and cheaper. Gangs already force entire towns to grow and make cocaine under the threat of death like the Uygurs. So why don't they change it to manufacturing? Since forced labour is that important as in this video, how about stopping drug trafficking and consumption in America first? You can free entire towns in Colombia.
Ignoring that "shrinkflation" is just inflation but just not on the price tag. Cost has always been a thing, it's not even the whole "chinese will steal shit", it's just labour cost is so low it's the only real way to get the costs of production so low people are willing to pay for it. The harsh reality is that the average consumer has become accustomed to dirt and dirt cheap since the 60's and don't want to step away from it. Even mid and a large number of high end items are dirt as compared to the cost it would be to produce locally and ethically.
As a design and publishing business myself (of kids toys) I would LOVE and praise heaven if I could make my products locally but I'd need to multiply my prices at minimum 10 fold to even have a chance at making a profit, more than 20 times if I want to avoid running the edge. And realistically speaking, who would be buying a set of 36 colored wooden blocks for 170 euro rather than 10 euro?
Wages are simply to high as the cost of wages are just put in the cost of the product same with taxes and other costs, and that most manufacturing has moved to China and other such places closing local plants that worked at scale (increasing cost again).
I think a wake up call to people should be that generally speaking buying new is cheaper than repairing a broken item. In a healthy manufacturing ecosystem repair should be significantly cheaper than buying new.
@@relo999 for most objects, but not all. In my industry, a skilled craftsman is paid somewhere between $17-$25/hr. Shop rates are USUALLY about 100-150/hr for most yards. I charge about $75/hr for repairs and custom fab work, myself. It really depends on what it would cost to pay someone to do said work. But I'd agree its screwed up to arbitrarily make that more difficult, a la apple.

There was an old economics book from early 20th century that had an example of how the economy of poverty works. To make a long story short, the man of the story had 2 options on buying boots: pay 10 bucks for a cheap pair that lasted 6-7 months of work and had to be replaced, or pay 50 for a premium pair that would last 10 years, on a salary of 35 dollars. He kept choosing the cheap boots because he could more easily afford them and in 10 years time he had spent 200 dollars on boots and half the time he was walking almost barefoot because the boots were falling apart.
This is what the flooding of the market with cheap products does, you see it as affordable now, but in the long run you end up paying 10 times more for the same thing because you need to replace it often. Its IRL microtransactions.

This concept is about lack of wisdom or foresight on the consumer's part, but it doesn't adequately explain in full Temu. It's true with things like works shoes or cars and such. Things that you will need for the rest of your life. But with fast fashion and useless junk like what's popular on Shein and Temu, being new is a desirable trait for the consumer. Clothes fashionable for a month, a gadget you use once to see how it works, a second time because you feel bad for spending money on it and then never again, and so on.
In many cases it's about the novelty, not about being a cheap alternative (but I can see that as the motivation in many cases too).

Like how their products are of a lesser quality, their horrible customer support for returns, and the way they make businesses on their platform lower the prices to the products. People need to know that these lower prices of Temu come with some huge conditions.

They told me naturally that they were not issuing this kind of invoice. For my business, I have to issue invoices for my customer orthewise I can get fined and those guys have opened doors to operate as they pleased. I did not finished my purchase and your video convinced me that i was right. Thanks for your work!!
This is amazon all over again where they are trying to kill the competition through unfairly low prices, only to ramp them up the moment they get to a dominant position. Except in this case, they are immediately skipping to the phase of having extremely low quality items that are nearly always a loss to buy them for how terrible they are. The few things my sister bought from there were pretty much all either defective or broken.
Amazon gained it’s foothold because in the beginning it literally guaranteed 2 day shipping or they’d give you a refund. Like literally 2 days. I got so much stuff for free when Amazon first started. The prices weren’t that much better than a store. They suckered us in with Amazon Prime.

Idk about Shein, but many popular clothing brands has been exploiting the Bangladesh garment industry since forever ago. If you look into it, you'll realize not only are the workers underpaid but sometimes foreign brands straight up not pay at all and run off with the goods. And not to mention child labor is rampant.
Child labour is nowhere near as bad as people make out. Not necessarily anyway. It's also a lifeline for families I'm those regions. Literal slave labour, as discussed in this video, is a different beast.
They are also destroying the environment over there. A lot of rivers in Bangladesh are ultra polluted from garment factory runoff.
The only thing different is that Shein is poor quality clothing but women think it doesn't matter because a majority of them don't care about quality of comfortability, as long as it looks nice to other people and being only worn once

We're pretty much at a point where Chinese manufactured products control so much of the market it's virtually impossible to find stuff that isn't made there. If you were to try to avoid anything made there, you would have no phone, no tv, no computer, nothing with any plastic in it, and nothing with any electronics. Even if you were to find versions of these products not made in china, you would be paying a lot more, and you probably wouldn't even be able to get them for certain product categories.
There is always the used market. I got an old TV for free many years ago it is over 20 years old I mostly just watch DVDs but it works great still and honestly a TV or cell phone is unnecessary anyway. You can find computers and TVs for cheap used or even find them on the side of the road, so no need to buy new inferior products. But I do agree it is hard to find things not made in china, but it is not impossible.

From my experience Temu is better than Aliexpress. I don't live in US so here the alternative is either you pay literally 10 times more, or you buy from Temu. It's not good for everything i.e. computer parts are bad and not cheaper, but for other stuff they are good. For some things which they sell, there is really no alternative, i.e. you either pay 10 or even 20 more expensive or can't buy the thing at all. I live in a small European country and Amazon is expensive and the shipping is even more expensive than the thing you try to buy, so Amazon is a no go... and our local e-market sell the same stuff and even lower quality Chinese stuff with 5 to 20 (times not percent) mark up....

Part of the issue is you can find the same exact products on random websites, Amazon and ebay with the same photos for often multiple times the price. These people are drop shippers and the products come from the same place. Basically it means entire products are tainted by alave labor and i don't know how to avoid it. I just ordered two boom standa yesterday from ebau for 20 each, but i found the aame product on Amazon, and dedicated audio websites for as high as 70 USD each.

I never used Temu. The first ever ad I saw of them was them claiming they sold a ps5 for like 50 cents when it was impossible to find one that wasn't like 1000 dollars. Then, I saw ads of them basically gameify shopping, which made me distrust them more. Constantly seeing ads of it also made me distrust it more, and then finding out its sister application was literal malware was just the icing on the cake. Not to mention all the other shady things they do.
I work in the furniture industry in canada and there are constant warnings sent out about new products flagged under anti dumping laws. Its still out of hand.
The best way to gauge if an app is unethical and terrible has always been: Does old grandmas/aunts/moms use the app? If yes, then it's bad.

I neither shop at Temu nor at Shein, but I do have a defense in comparison to Amazon: Amazon doesn't ship all their products to eg. Holland, where I live. 90% of the products I (used to) find there and want(ed) to buy show _"This item doesn't ship to the Netherlands"_ . Plus on Amazon the price vs quality is more irregular and trust-unworthy than on these Chinese shops. On Amazon you get scammed more and Amazon isn't doing much about it. That's IMHO the main reason why Amazon is losing from these shops

Most of those companies will still be underpaying workers, but don't try to paint it the same as genocide, slavery, and forced labor. Next time you go to buy from Temu, ask yourself if you really need that, or if you can buy it used. Otherwise, search for a company that will produce what you need ethically with quality materials at a premium. They're out there, and the only reason the premium is so high is because there's no economy of scale since your perspective proliferates among consumerists, detaching them from the moral consequences of spending their money frivolously.

I never used Temu, this is in fact the first time I heard of it. But your argument is not a compelling one. Most of the world's manufacturing has already been exported and is done at third-world wages that can be considered modern-day slavery. It also looks like the exact same products on Temu are available on many other sites like Alibaba, Ebay, even Amazon. The best way to stop people from using outlets like Temu is not to grandstand on slavery, but to improve the economy and get inflation under control, so there is no need for people to have to rely on it.

There is a huge leap you have to make to be switching from amazon where all marketing information is traceable and has a proper paper trail linked to it rather than using an application that blatantly hides its sourcing information from you and is veiled in intentional deception.

Phone upgrades, planned obsolescence, removing support for older systems, and the lack of modernized industry standardization making for less repairable products all spit in the faces of these miners. We need stronger regulations and deeper consequences for being involved in these human rights violations. Until that happens, the best thing you can do is see through the consumerist marketing propaganda and repair what you can, buy used if it's an option, or spend a premium on a quality ethically-sourced item that will last longer and give you a better experience. Only as a last resort should you buy some cheap garbage made at the expense of others, otherwise you are directly endorsing genocide, slavery, forced labor, and environmental destruction.

Apathy definitely wins out. It is impossible to care about all the issues going on in the world and function in everyday society. Almost every action has some negative that comes with it.
It seems like videos like these are just made for engagement purposes, not to inform (because the parts about items being overly cheap and the app being gamified aren't exactly true--these are just commonly spread sentiments about Temu). Yet, people will pat themselves on the back for not using Temu while they participate in some other activity that also is "morally wrong."

I understand the ideals behind preventing slave labor from producing goods, but the United States from a government perspective is also in favor of slave labor. The only way I see many of the underpaid and overworked class of America that is not considered slave labor to own much of anything outside of the necessities for food would be at a remarkably cheaper price which is able to be found somewhere like temu. This product availability enables those without the title CEO to enjoy some aspects of life while they are not at work. As somebody who has survived on primarily expired food for the last year due to monetary circumstances, I don't see many options for people that are being taken advantage of by every company from America. I can't expect Americans to not turn somewhere else if their own economy is extorting them.
As a side note I would like to mention that I reside in the United states. Many believe this country is currently in a race to have one of the largest sex slave operations available. Keeping in mind that they have only recently stopped mass-producing fentanyl and have been called out by multiple us senators for funding different Chinese projects like covid. @@SnipyShinowow that’s a bad analogy you’ve made. It’s “made in China probably means using forced labor. Both Temu and Amazon sell things made from China. Then, how much forced labor used in the products we buy is acceptable? Temu just does it a little more than Amazon. How is that like pancakes and waffles unless you are making the argument that carbs and sugar are bad than who cares if you’re eating pancakes or waffles, they’ll both get you to type 2 diabetes.

Still remember when someone from China tried to log into my steam account after I let my sister use my account to play jackbox on her computer. I told her about it and she blamed me for “always going on weird sites.” Yeah, I imagine she has spyware on her PC.
I mean, one of my school mates told me that, her sister basically turned of the antivirus just to go on a website, I was confused at that moment, so yeah I can feel you.
