This is definitely one of the best arcade conversions by Sega. Yes, Sega. All early Genesis Capcom arcade ports were programmed by Sega themselves as Nintendo had Capcom locked into a monopolistic contract preventing them from developing for any other home console. So, Sega bought licenses for these Capcom arcade games and reprogrammed them from scratch themselves. Strider was definitely the most impressive one of the bunch. Being the first 8 megabit cartridge ever helped with that.
God I remember playing this game at my grandmother's house over 20 years ago 😭😭😭 I could never get past the Robo-Kong monster so thanks for letting me see how the ending! Thanks for an awesome play-through 💙=^_^=💙
@triplestar100 also, for those who got MAME, I highly recommend Osman: Cannon Dancer, by Kouichi Isuke, the same man who developed Strider, but thgis one's made by Mitchell Corp./Atlus. when you play it, you'll thank me!
Its great games like this that are missing from recent Mega Drive compilations and replay consoles for the modern market that we are missing out on. Rarely any movie titles either. Must be licencing issues. Still cant beat the real thing - hook your Mega Drive or Genesis up to an old TV and plug in a cartridge, still the best way to play.
@@garywintle8023 as it turns out it is on the new mini! Sega must be watching comment sections haha. Nah more likely they realised it was a popular game and included it :)
Yeah, this one would be more akin to licensing, but then again Capcom did put Strider on the PS2, in Capcom Classics Collection Volume 2 (and put in the wrong revision with less music than the second revision had).
I always thought strider deserved a few full fledged anime movies in the style of Ninja Scroll that could follow the Manga series. It would of sold very well and had a cult following... It still can.
some of the arcade ports to the MD have def been more fun in that aspect. I remember playing the crap out of Forgotten Worlds with my dad on the genesis/MD back in the early 90's. I think that was one of the first genesis games I ever played. That game is still one of my favorite shoot-em-ups ever.
Azwel Yep. Back then, UK Mega Drive games would top £50 (about £100 in today's money calculated by inflation), import games even more and that was back in 1990, but the Mega Drive was released in 1988 in Japan. Quite a few games didn't take long to finish. MERCS was another great game that didn't take long to finish.
This was a major deal in 1990 with this port not only coming out on the first ever 8 megabit cartridge, it was a very close port of the arcade game and was the best home port for a long time.
I never really gave this game a chance. I absolutely love Strider 2 on the PS1. Maybe i should give it a serious go. After all, the arcade version comes as a bonus disc with Strider 2.
Strider is legendary with Spectacular graphics and STUNNING gameplay Featuring Jon Voight as grandmaster Meio Way much better than the master system version and the sequel
@videogameobsession You mean the Japanese Mega Drive version. The game was released for the European Mega Drive and it's the same as the North American Genesis version.
Dude, remember that most of the world calls it the "Mega Drive", so there will be loads of regions. The one I had was identical to this and I had a Mega Drive.
@Kringle Clayminator If you were used to 60Hz (as we have here in the USA, Japan, and some other regions, and then played PAL games at 50Hz, you'd be biased too. Just compare Sonic the Hedgehog 50Hz vs 60Hz. Aside from a small share of optimized games, these will all run much slower than they were intended to run. Ignorance? Quite the opposite.
talk about an epic game. It's incredible that even by today's standards this game still have some awesome features. Those gravity inversions and antigravitational boss fights, experiencing this kind of stuff in the 90's, oh my god. I was always a SNES fanboy, but I'm starting to recognize that the truly jaw-dropping 16bit games of the 90's were almost all on the Genesis (and I had the genesis as well lol)
Both consoles had their share of jaw dropping games, not just the Genesis. It's why I've built a nice collection of both 16 bit consoles, as well as the NES, PS1, Saturn, and Gameboy systems. Those were 2 great era of gaming, the 8 and 16 bit eras.
bwhy do I LOVE this game, besides the reasons everyone else does? 1] one of those Arcade-to-MD/Genesis ports that IMO surpasses the original; others being Chelnov:Atomic Runner, Midnight Resistance, E-Swat, Insector X, Moonwalker & Twin Cobra. 2] the ending: the feeling of satisfaction of a job well done while watching Meio's tower crumble, buildings explode, and your glider picks you up & you fly into the sunset. just reeks of EPIC!!!
OH MY FUCK DUDE. I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS GAME FOR YEARS NOW. played this when I was young and it used to be one of my favorites along with kid chameleon and quackshot
Nintendo's version was a different beast altogether, and based off the Strider manga. This port, and the arcade had absolutely nothing at all to do with the manga.
yeah in my childhood i played ristar and street fighter and jurassic park on the sega. didn't get much atari action or anything before nintendo. but my uncle has an atari which i play here and there, missle command is the shit.
This port is very faithful to the original, but due to the Sega Mega Drive being slightly less powerful than the Capcom CP System (CPS-1), there are a number of short pauses between sections and visual glitches.
The slight pauses are not to do with the limitations of the Mega Drive hardware it’s to do with the game having t decompress data due to the 8 megabit ROM limitations because the game data was clearly larger than the 8 megabits.
This game is actually not very long at all, arcade games in the late 80's into the 90's tended not to be. They were built with short bursts of gameplay in mind, and difficulty that let them consume quarters from the player at a high rate.
@@Bloodreign1 Strider is one of the most difficult games ever made. Capcom had done an excellent job by creating this wonderful classic, same applies for Ghosts and Goblins. Also the soundtrack of Strider is timeless and nostalgic.
This is one of my favorite games of all time and I like the Mega Drive version better than the Arcade and X68000 versions. I think the soundtrack sounds better on the Mega Drive and I like Hiryu's Sprite better on the Mega Drive too compared to the Arcade and X68000 versions.
You know, being the absolute badass Strider is, why the hell can he barely take any hits before...well, dying in a spectacular explosion? Then again, you could say the same for Bill and Lance in Contra, couldn't you?
@WinderlyReal : I think I wasn't clear enough in my comment. My problem isn't with *how * he's playing. The problem is, as I wrote, that he is killing the bosses too fast. The reason one ever watches a playthrough of an old game (or at least why I would watch one) is to see the kind of ideas people had when making games back then. One wants to see what the boss fights, level design, soundtracks etc. As such, this video is more of a speedrun than a longplay, and just didn't do it for me.
Short game, but fun. One of the most graphically impressive games on the Genesis. Great music, too. The Soviet Union-influenced storyline is cool too, although the game doesn't really develop it much.

Thank you.

The games in the 90ies/80ies was much harder then today. You needed a really long time to master a game to see the ending.
00:12 The laughter must be the most epic in game history

I still remember the stages...I need my genesis back ASAP
the music and sounds are brilliant
I love the Soviet imagery!
The part at the end with the closing credits seems to be a metaphor that everything comes and goes.

I suspect that you have played this game before. Just a hunch
one of the best memories of my youth!
Strider is a good game.
Perfect game to show off the blast processing
That slowdown tho
Blast Processing was a myth. It was just a marketing buzzword to point out the difference between CPU speeds.
Nebula Rain that's the one thing it had over the snes. No myth
Doesn't seem a lot faster than Run Saber though
@Benjamin Jagun It acts as graphic processor
Only Sega could take a soundtrack from a Capcom game & make it epic. 🎼
Yea, make it sound like shit.
@@jabarijones9588 El original ya sonaba primitivo lol
Sega improved the soundtrack for the most part as most of the tracks sound way better than the arcade original.
