This might be the best golf instruction I've seen on internet. It's the easiest way I've seen to get you to the top position with a flat wrist I've ever tried. I was getting there in a much more complicated way. This is much easier. It also sets you in a solid position for the downswing -- not over turning the shoulders or hips. Nice job, Eric. You may want to clarify the part where you stick an alignment tool at the end of the club, though. That makes it easy to turn with the club instead of pushing the hands and club through the body area. I used to do that very thing for the longest time thinking I was making a one piece takeaway.
Appreciate the kind words and support!!
Struggled for several seasons to find the correct positions in the backswing, gone to several coaches, but none of them gave me the right keys, and saying stuff like I think too much. Then Ive seen your vids this season and 2 months ago it became clear what I was doing wrong, from a vid in which you described this steps in a slightly different form. Playing so much better golf now and broke 80 five times before my course closed a few weeks ago. Excellent instruction on this channel!
Very pleased to hear you are making progress, Mange! Happy to help where I can :)
The right palm, left back hand facing the camera bit was very helpful to me. Really appreciate it.
Great to hear, John!
Always good to see a fundamentals refresher.
Can't get enough of the basics.
Thank's Eric.
Agreed! Gotta get really good at the basics and then continue getting better and better and better at them
I've watched several of Eric's videos and they have all been very helpful. Thanks!
Appreciate it Sean!
Thankyou. One of the simplest videos online. Very well explained
Our pleasure! Hope it helps!
Man, this video is just too generous. Appreciate that Eric 🫡
:) Our pleasure!
Finally someone takes the guesswork out of knowing if you’re properly executing each step of the takeaway /backswing!!!!! I have struggled and been preoccupied with this forever. I took this to the range today and saw immediate improvement when I just executed the first takeaway move correctly. It’s such a simple concept but very difficult to execute if you’ve not been doing it. I find it’s progressively harder as you move to longer clubs however! This takeaway move also greatly improved consistency in my chipping and pitching !! Thanks for providing such clear instruction in my mind the most critical part of the golf swing.
Thanks for the kind feedback!
Great video Eric. Ive been working on this exact drill with my local pro. It helps with fanning the club open and swinging way to far from the inside. Thanks for all of your good work👍
Thanks, Dave--hope it helps!
So detailed yet so simple to understand. Thanks, Eric!
Our pleasure! Thank you for watching!
I just want to say that I’ve been having a very bad/inconsistent year and I’ve watched lots of different videos and spent lots of time practicing but after watching this video and using these simple directions at the range I absolutely killed it. Thanks so much for fixing my swing hopefully I’m back on the right track now!
You got it! Glad to hear you are getting back on track!
Man. What a great video. With this half swing I am making better contact than ever before. I have not gone to a complete swing to the top yet but have more distance than before. Golf is fun again. Thanks.
Love to hear that, Eric!!
"The butt of the club pointng to me, clubface at the ball" is a great checkpoint, a very helpful method and a great tip 👍
100%
My pleasure!
Eric, your teaching method is so refreshing! Simple and the fundamentals well explained. The takeaway is something I have to talk myself through constantly and these checkpoints are the easiest to follow. Glad I found your channel!
Appreciate it Jordan! Thanks for being here!
I love it, Eric! Thanks!
Thank you :)
Eric, Great teaching video. Thank you so much for posting. The best!
Appreciate it, Ernie! Our pleasure!
Right palm at the camera was the feeling for me. Another gem Eric!
Love it! I used that for quite awhile as well!
Great tip! I went to the range today and focused on that very first part of the backswing and keeping the butt end of the club towards my right leg instead of hinging my wrist too early, and was really flushing the ball a lot better. Also trying to work in the lesson of more rotation before extension, but more on that later....Not sure why the delayed wrist hinge works since I see several pros hinge early, but it works. Great stuff, Eric.
Thanks, Dan! Glad to hear that!
Great video!
Thanks, Ernesto!
Awesome video Eric....I really struggle with this. I still grind my way to a 2 handicap, but I can really benefit from this. Thank you!!!
Thanks, Joe! Hope it helps my friend!
Excellent, concise video on the takeaway. I like the checkpoints. Thanks for posting.
Thanks, Joe!
Thank you for the 3 step tips, it's helped to reconfirm what I've been working on. Have a great Christmas and I wish you every success in 2020.
Thanks, Dara! Same to you my friend!
Thanks Eric, this is a gem of a tip.
You got it!
Thanks.. the most helpful for my back swing and impact.
You got it!
Great video and explanation Eric.
Thanks, Kerry!
Eric in your newer videos you talk about moving belt buckle and core..when does that happen? After shaft parallel?
Its really happening the entire time...progressively through the entire backswing but yes MOST from takeaway TO top of backswing
Hi Eric! 10:22 The downswing of your background guy (blue trousers, grey top) looks pretty decent! Usually, ''not so much''! Maybe to convey the night and day difference between right and wrong (smile)! That aside thank you for the continued excellent guidance! Much appreciated!
Very nice, Thank You Eric
Thank you my friend!
Thanks Eric!…Great checkpoints I will be working on this winter🍻
Thanks, Mark! Hope it helps my friend!
Great Video, this really resonated with me, thanks for posting such informative videos.
Our pleasure my friend! Appreciate the kind words!
Brilliant lesson!!!
Thanks!
This looks like exactly what I need. I bet once I check the first checkpoints that the club is pointing at the target instead of my thigh. Thanks Eric for another great drill!
Our pleasure!!👊
good stuff
Thank you!
Genius !!
:)
Great Eric. I like to think of that first foot as a putting stroke -- keeps the wrists out of it.
:)
Any videos for getting the club back in front on the downswing?
Hey there!
The concepts in this video should help👍
ruclips.net/video/BKrxVvyp0_A/видео.html
Thank you for watching!
Thanks Eric! For the break down. What are you thoughts on a one piece takeaway into a simple slinging of the club back to the top so one can feel the centrifugal force of the pull of the club through the backswing and naturally transitioning that force via your lower body rotation into the downswing and continue to feel the centrifugal force through the downswing for the whip release to occur?
Hey! Yes--I like that as a concept SO LONG as it produces the correct motions

ruclips.net/video/67zwR2Un7bU/видео.html
Great video Eric, thank you!! I'm someone who immediately takes the club back on the inside, causing a whole host of problems, eg OTP, shanking, very flat backswing! My question is therefore how long might it take your advice to become natural? I know everyone is different, etc etc, but trying to get a feel of how long this might take to be engrained? I play twice a week usually, weekends, and one big range session every Friday..
Cheers
Andrew
Hey Andrew!
1 month for it to look good on camera all the time...maybe 3-6 months of little thought on course. 6+ months until little to no thought required.
That time table goes for someone who is working on it 3-5 days per week
At your rate of one range session per week I would assume 1 entire year
If you should UP your frequency and lessen the reps per session. 20-30 reps (even at home) with foam or waffle ball 3-4 times per week would be great
Awesome video Eric
Thanks, Jonathan!
Greetings from pakistan, take away should start from shoulders or hands and arms secondly do I have to hinge purposely or it will happen automatically... thanks
Hey! I answer that for ya here:
ruclips.net/video/fAZGLV2HpYs/видео.html
is this Bethlehem Muni? Great course, played it many times. I worked at North Hampton CC many years ago. My College Golf teammate is Jeff Wambold over at Allentown Muni. Great golf courses in that part of the country. Great video, simple and easy to understand.
Yessir!! Small world :) I knew Jeff!
Thanks Eric, I really appreciate your videos. Question on the second checkpoint, do you make a conscious attempt to set your wrists, or are you just letting your hands move naturally? Also, how do you know when you have reached the top of the backswing? It is so easy to overswing 🙂 Thanks! -Tom
Hey Tom!
Thanks for being here with us!
Whether or not a golfer is consciously thinking about a mechanical piece in their swing is very player dependent...it depends on where they are coming from and what they're specifically working on with their coach. It's really just a matter of finding your biggest 1-2 priorities and what checkpoints go along with those priorities, and then checking your swing on video to see if you hit those checkpoints in motion.
Here are a couple of videos you may enjoy watching!

Eric, what changes for guidelines, if any, for the driver?
None relative to this backswing stuff Peter
Thank you for that Eric. Would you use the alignment stick through the backswing to check on position?(not the hit) So clear and steps make sense.
You def can do that!
Thank you for good drill.
Our pleasure my friend!
That is just so spooky this is something I am working on I have paused this at 3:19 🤔 let’s see what you say over the next 8 minutes interesting very interesting still spooky lol and I must say what a fantastic coach you are 🤗
Lol love it! Thanks, Dave! Appreciate it my friend!
That was really good I am going to use sandwich drill to help me out as that seems to be working and definitely that exaggerated move as I used to have a slight role of the wrists and forearm which unfortunately made me flat
GREAT VIDEO ERIC THX
IBO BELGIUM
Thanks!
Hey Eric I want to to be more open at the top of my back swing meaning where the club face is in space is more shut
Hey Robert!
Either Weaken grip or extend lead wrist more
Eric, do you 'push off' with your right foot in the backswing? As in use the ground to help you turn?
Yes
ruclips.net/video/wVzL-oEYFyA/видео.html
Hey Rudd!
You want to have pressure work back to right heel in backswing, right leg straightens from about 25* bent to 10* bent. Right hip/butt back.
wrist condition or wrist structure at the top is from natural hinge, correct?
There are several variables involved...
Grip is one.....then the amount of vertical hinge (radial deviation) and then the backward hinge (flexion/extension)
Hi. What takes the club back initially? Do the shoulders and chest turn and move the arms ? Or do the arms, chest and shoulders move together?
Core and upper body
explain it here: ruclips.net/video/67zwR2Un7bU/видео.html
Hi Eric yet again another great tutorial. I am confused though between the takeaway with an iron as opposed to with a driver. As with an iron, the butt of the club points at the body all the way to the right thigh; is this the same for the driver too?
Thanks! Same!
I always take something away watching your videos. Thank you Eric
Thanks, William! Glad to hear that!
Great video. That is exactly what I do and have gotten most of my buddies to do that same thing. It makes the backswing easy. To many people take it away with their hands and it's a disaster. Thanks!
:)
Hi Eric,
What club are you using and is this your "go to" practice club and, if so, why? Love your channel. thanks!
I'm using a short iron here...I'm usually using 9i-7i for most videos. I would say I practice most with 8i....because its more or less in the middle length and loft wise and gives me a good representation..
Hi Eric
Great video,I roll my hands in the first part of the takeaway is this a bad thing to do ?
Paul
Hey Paul.
Yes that is bad....IF.....it makes the clubface to open and/or makes your downswing too over the top (those are likely outcomes of rolling your hands early)
Would need to see your swing to say for sure. Join www.cogornogolf.com if you dont get it sorted so I can help
Or search my name and TAKEAWAY to see drills to fix
how do we incorporate shoulder tilt in this?
Not sure what you are looking for here :)
Nothing complicated.... of course you tilt when you do anything on way back! This video just wasn't focused on that
@@CogornoGolf got it. Thanks
Is it applicable for driver backswing?
Yes, in general.
Should YOU do it?
I don't know. I would have to see your swing. IT depends on what you are currently doing, how much speed you have, etc.
If you face is too OPEN or you struggle with shots to the right....then you prob should.
If you hit hooks to the left....then probably not.
Eric, Excellent simple detailed backswing steps! Thank you!
My pleasure my friend!
Does a good backswing reduce thin shots or pull or slices?
Good backswing should help everything!

Did anyone else notice the guy in the background mesmerized by his colorful head covers?
Thanks for the lesson and everything you do. I will work on this
Our pleasure!!👊
Big fan here. Can you show us how to get a deeper shoulder turn so you won't lift near the end of the backswing, break the shoulder plane and have to re-rout the club?
Good idea for a video! We have a bunch on TURN and a bunch on TILT (check those out they may help) but not sure we have them together

Excellent. Be better with smart ball....
Thanks! You may very well be right....hard to argue with the smart ball, keeping the elbows closer and the arm structure it provides....as well as the way it makes you pivot accordingly. Great tool!
Approximately how many repetitions of a drill has to be done before it’s grooved in
Depending on our definition of grooved and the frequency of those reps .....6-12 months.
Old school thinking was you need to hit between 3-5000 golf balls to change muscle memory. I’m not sure that used any science but it’s a good guide
👍👍👍
This is horrible....for 1 your club is shut at the top...
This is how you like to swing mostly as far as these check points.
How would you explain ben hogan and how he looks at the top...or his grip...
Great instruction fits to the golfer not the golfer to these checkpoints.
Appreciate your feedback!
@Eric Cogorno Golf Sorry for being critical. I'm just passionate about teaching, lol
You have better videos than I do...ive been to scared to put them up lol...so cudos to you, my friend :)
Happy holiday season!
